Title: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 16, 2007, 06:48:34 PM "Oh I do like to be beside the seaside..."
Welcome to the South Coast for the latest GUKPT event. There's a lot of Blondes in this weekend, so prepared to be crammed full of fastly served nuggets of delicious information served by Jen and myself. Play begins at 4pm tomorrow. This is the 'lite' updater thread. For the interactive thread (complete with photos): http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=23689.0 (http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=23689.0) Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: Djinn on May 17, 2007, 04:25:06 PM Well, we're only 15 minutes past the advertised time and we hear (from two floors up and two corridors across) that it's been shuffled up...
Many a player has squeezed into the unlikely double cardroom area of Brighton Grosvenor (separated by some tables, roulette etc. so during a seat change a tempted person could sneakily put a quick red-black bet on) and the press area is a good quarter of a mile from the action, so please bear with us as we gather stories in little batches and put them up every so often... Spotted arriving late: Neil Channing Dave Colclough Victoria Coren Karl 'Blue Square Hit Squad' Mahrenholz Spotted milling around: One Ear Pab Sunny Chattha Jim Kerrigan Nik Persaud Early stage photo collection time now... Bear with us. We also have no power, so after an hour there may be a short blackout as we fight the other 11 laptops for one of their power sockets. I have been training Homer a la Rocky for just such a necessity. Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 17, 2007, 04:34:16 PM It's squeezier than a squeezy squeeze play in the cardroom. Just to clarify, there is like next to no room in the centre, so if a player gets knocked out in the middle, he really needs Air and Sea Rescue to winch him out to safety. There's two sections with loads of gaming tables (strategically) placed in between, either way we might have a little trouble getting chip counts and hands from those in the centre of this maelstrom.
Play has started now anyway. 156 runners counted today... Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 17, 2007, 04:58:21 PM Walsall winner Jerome Bradpiece bets 1.1k on the river of a 4h 2h 6h Jh Qc board, gets called, and shows Ahrt Js, his opponent flashes the Kh before mucking.
Elsewhere Mad Marty Wilson gets all his chips in on a 5s 6d 9s 7d board with 7h 6h against a 3.5k bet from his opponent, who calls with Jc Jd. 2s river doubles up the Mad one. Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: Djinn on May 17, 2007, 05:10:10 PM Player list going to be here any moment - but just a taster of the crowd assembled (read: packed behind some ropes) today:
Stuart Nash Steve Bovis Joe Grech Michael Greco Richard Ashby JP Kelly Jim Reid Barney Boatman Jules Adamson John Exley Stuart Fox Sid Harris Martin Green Thomas Dunwoodie Jeff Buffenbarger Actual total 148 players. Apparently 11 no-shows will probably be playing tomorrow - chances of still buying in look somewhat slim... Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 17, 2007, 05:32:07 PM Barney Boatman bets 2k on an Aspades 2s 9c 9h Qh board. Jim Reid calls. Barney shows 9s 6s which is good.
Richard Ashby has doubled up, I gather most of the chips went in on the river of the 2s 3d Jd Aspades 9c board, his 4d 5h nut straight obviously being good against the opponent's mucked hand. Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 17, 2007, 05:37:20 PM Blinds are now 50/100.
Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: Djinn on May 17, 2007, 06:07:07 PM Jeff Nathan makes a good call on the river, with the board standing: Ahrt 6c 5d 2c 8s. He had been check-calling down (although the turn went check-check) and he found a 3k bet at him on the river. After a bit of a pause, he called with Js Jh - that was good.
________________________________ Meanwhile it's not been plain sailing for Flushy - after about 20 minutes of the first level I saw him lurking by Pab's table...he was saying: "I've flopped two sets and I'm down 2k. Explain how that happened?" Pab replies, "It's because you play so bad." "I even folded set over set," Flushy carries on as if he were the partially deaf one. "On the turn?" "No, there I called to hit quads." Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 17, 2007, 06:10:48 PM James is playing tomorrow. Karl and Jim are still around their 10k stacks. Chaz is down to about 8k, Jim meanwhile was badgering me to get a picture of Vicky Coren sucking on a piece of rock... Praz just lost a pot to his nextdoor neighbour Flushy, Praz bet 1.5k on a 7c 5c Aspades Qh board, Flushy called and another player passed. Praz checked the river 6s but then paid off a 1.5k from Flushy's Ahrt 5h. Stuart Fox re-raises Ian Woodley's initial raise to 650, and then bets 1k after Woodley checks on the 8d 6c Ac board, getting the latter to pass. Young Jules Adamson (sat, now, next to similarly Poker Verdict attired Neil Channing after the latter's table broke) just informed us that he'd been involved in the "sickest hand of the tournament," and that was only level two... He got involved in a family pot (yes, all nine players limping preflop) holding 4s 4d. The flop came 4h 2d 2c. The small blind bet out 300, Jules flat called, and the rest of them got out of the way. Turn: Ks The small blind bet 700, Jules upped it to 2,300 and found, to his delight, a raise of a further 3k (leaving his opponent 3k behind). Wanting to assure that the rest of the stack went in, he flat called, and then in it went on the Kh river. His hand was no good against the Kc 2s at that point, though. Down to 5k from an early 17k... Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 17, 2007, 07:12:10 PM Flushy news now.
He checked called Ashley Hayles 2.5k bet on a Qc 4h 8s board, before checking the 3c and then calling, sorry 'Insta-calling' the turn push with 8h 8c, which was ahead of Hayles' Kc Kd. River was a 2c, Flushy over 20k now. Everytime I go past Marty Wilson, he's talking about something bizarre... First it's something incomprehensible about the first lollipop lady being situated by his family home. Then it's some other entertaining guff about playing the world's biggest snakes and ladders game, then whilst betting on the turn of a 8-4-5-T board, he's talking about the start of the Shawshank Redemption whilst calling a clock on his opponent. His opponent passes Kings face up, a great pass after Marty shows Eights. Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: Djinn on May 17, 2007, 07:15:11 PM Neil Channing, who described his new table as 'Pokerverdictastic' just halved the number of players on it wearing the pictured team Red by getting himself eliminated...
Flop of 8-2-J, Neil bets, called. Turn: Q Neil bets 4k, raise all in, call. Simple as that - set of Twos for Channing, set of Eights for the winner. Didn't see this hand personally, so that's your lot detail-wise, I'm afraid... Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: Djinn on May 17, 2007, 07:32:01 PM First Break Chip Counts:

Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: Djinn on May 17, 2007, 07:42:00 PM Matt Dale is on a bit of a roll down here in Brighton... his early big stack is courtesy of some Aces, with which he raised under the gun to 250 (this is a good level ago now), getting no respect and four callers. The flop came A-J-x rainbow - so he bet out 600 - only two callers came with him for the raggy second diamond turn card. At this point he bet out 1,400 and got re-raised 5k. When he pushed in for 8k total his opponent had to reluctantly put it in - with Kd Td he had the flush and gurshot draw, but no hit and a happy Dale.
Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 17, 2007, 08:06:29 PM Comedy hand from Flushy now, he had so much fun telling me about it, he didn't care about missing a couple of hands.
He, along with 5 others, limps for 200 with Qs 9s. Vicky Coren on the button makes it 600, and ALL the limpers call. Flop: Ahrt Ac 8c Everyone checks. Turn: 9c Checked to Flushy, who bets 200 (!) into the 4k+ pot, probably trying to find out where the ace is. He gets 3 callers, whilst Vicky mucks her hand. The river is 6d and everyone checks. Flushy's Qs 9s is good against J-T, 7-7 and what was probably the naked Kc. Vicky passed Kings apparently. :D Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 17, 2007, 08:34:20 PM JP doubles up with 9c 9h against an LP raiser with 6d 3d, he's still a bit short though.
One-hand Rumit is threatening to become Every-Hand Rumit. First his 1.2k river bet on a 5h Qd Ahrt Aspades 4d with Ad 8d is paid off by Richard Ashby. Then he takes down a 4-way pot with Ks Tc against the Kh 9h of one player and the Kd 9d of Barney who must have loved the flop of the Kc Qd 7d 6s 4h board. Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: Djinn on May 18, 2007, 01:53:31 AM SOS for DTD's DC -
Small blind Dave Colclough may have, according to tablemate Karl, been thinking about raising, but big blind neighbour Josh Gould apparently talked him out of it, so they saw a limp-check flop of: 9s 3s 9d. Dave checked, Josh bet 600 (min bet). Dave raised another 1,000, and pretty swiftly after that got raised a further 2k. El Blondie then performed what is technically referred to as the chunk bet, whereby you just pick up a chunk of large denom chips, such as to cover or commit your opponent, and quickly place it over the line. But Josh was happy to go all-in with his Qh 9h - Dave could only watch as his slowplayed Kc Kh stayed behind as the turn and river emerged 4c Qc. Still on around 20k, though, even after losing the 15k or so in this pot. Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 18, 2007, 02:05:49 AM Flushy and Praz just got in a big pot. Flushy checked called a 3k bet from Praz on an A-9-2 rainbow board before check/raising a 4k bet on the Jack turn for another 7.5k. Praz passed eventually after a long dwell and the clock being called. Flushy did say he'd tell us later what he had but would prefer if it wasn't reported until after the tournament, (or he busts out).
So the guessing game begins... Answers on a postcard please. Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: Djinn on May 18, 2007, 02:38:49 AM Leaderwatch:
Mad Marty Wilson 80,000 James 'Flushy' Dempsey 57,000 Bali Pottiwall 60,000 Jeff Nathan 62,000 Ian Cox 58,000 ________________________________ Paul Parker is OUT - down to 6k he shoved with 6h 9h - could have been worse against his caller's A-J...but no hit and he's on the rail, saying, "If I had to come back on Day Two I wouldn't know what to do..." I think he might be dangerously close to acquiring the nickname 'the Pessimist...' Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 18, 2007, 02:41:05 AM Mystic Dave has extracted a few chips back after his Kings mishap, (Though he wasn't impressed that I didn't see the 505=SOS card thing). He had Aces against...2-4 to take out a short stack before extracting a 4k call from Stuart Nash on a Aspades 9h 2c 3s 6d board. Dave's hand, the classically raggy 9d 3c.
Mark McCluskey is OUT, Ace King vs Queens. Ace on the flop, Queen on the river. Marty Wilson raised to 1,700 preflop from UTG, the big blind called. The big blind c/raised Marty's 2,200 bet on the Kc 3c 5s board to 8,200. Marty called. "Insta-called," said Flushy, "Make sure you add that." The big blind checked the 9h turn and Marty bet 9k. Big blind folded. "Happy Birthday!" said Flushy. The King four-flushed.... ____________________________ Then with literally seconds to go I saw him shove a big chunk of stack in preflop over the top of under the gun all-in mover Ronnie Debeaulox... although Marty gave it the dwell in the small blind (tense moments for James, perhaps) he got it heads up, as he wanted with his Ad Kc vs. Ron's Ahrt Qs. No surprises from the board this time, and "I'm back in it..." Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: Djinn on May 18, 2007, 03:24:01 AM And the closing minutes of the tournament saw absolute carnage - one table losing four players in a matter of minutes as the clock ticked down. Another eliminatee was Daniell Tock, whose Aspades Tc ran into Jh Jd... honestly we're not entirely sure who's left and who's busted - down to under 46 players and we were kicked out for the final chip count (in which we no longer participate directly).
This count will be making its way up by 5am today, or before 4pm tomorrow, when Day 1B kicks off... Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1A - At A Glance Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 18, 2007, 11:39:38 AM End of Day 1A chip counts:
