:hello:

Later start today - lots of milling around downstairs as the (presumably larger number of) runners sign their TV release forms and take their seats.  No, wait, any second now.... Shuffle Up and Deal!

Spotted:

Lucy Rokach
Tikay    (Who presented me with the totally unexpected gift of a cake with a picture of him asleep in Notts Gala printed on the icing)
Julian Thew
Paul Alterman
James Akenhead
Les Kerrigan
Dan Carter
Womble
Simon Zach
Roy Brindley

157 starting today.

And that was just as we got to the stairs at the back of the room, leading to the lift leading to the corridor leading to the airlock leading to the press room.

Just got chucked off the Wifi, battling computer while Chris scouts the floor - Leon Leukides is OUT after his Ad Jd flush draw runs into the AA of Alan Dean, however, meaning we are down, semi-officially, from 159 runners to 158 after just a few minutes...

Lucy Rokach uses the half-wilson 7s 4s to get Barry Neville to pay her off for a 1.5k bet on the river of a 2h 6s 8s 9c Ks board.

Jac Arama finds his 500 river bet on a 4h 8c 2h 4c Qc board raised to 2k. He eventually makes the call with Ahrt Qc, which is good.

Ryan Fronda hasn't had a great start, he's had Jacks against Ace King lose, something else against Rudders' Queens lose too, and then having to pass Ace King on a Queen high board.

Ryan Fronda hasn't had a great start, he's had Jacks against Ace King lose, something else against Rudders' Queens lose too, and then having to pass Ace King on a Queen high board.

Worse now, he's OUT, he made a big overbet push on a Ks Td 8d board in the face of an 850 bet, which made me think he had a big draw, he got a call from the original raiser who was holding Ad Qd, which was in fact ahead of Ryan's Js 9s.

Turn:

Ts....

River:

2c

Ace high scoops.

Ash Hussain is also OUT, Ace King with the nut flush draw against Jacks, and then Jacks against Ace King.

Speedier exit for Kevin Daly - at the bar asking if I wanted to "hear a sad story..."  It wasn't that bad, as it turned out - here's what happened:
Kevin was in the small blind holding Ts Td.  A preflop raise to 300 was called in a couple of spots, and he flat called too.
Flop:  3c Tc Qc  He checks.  The big blind makes it 700, raised in late position to 1,900.  Then the button pushes all-in for around 3k more.  Back to Kevin, who dwells for many a minute before deciding to push all-in over the top.  The big blind then surprises him by calling - so he was in for a 26k pot with middle set against:

The big blind's 6c 7c and the button's Ac 9c.

No pair-up and he was probably third out.  "At least I'm out early in Brighton..." he remarks optimistically.

Sorry, we've had a look at the printed player list (going to try to copy it in before it's all obsolete, but there's only one and 12 press people want it) - and there is no Alex Ross listed, spam king or otherwise.

Ram Vaswani also planned on playing, but turning up half an hour late doesn't work over here, yet.  Chips off the table - next!

Simon Zach is OUT.

Jac Arama made it 350 with Tens, Simon Zach called and then a late position raiser made it 2k. Jac Arama passed and Simon called.

Flop:

Jc 7h 4c

Simon checks, LP re-raiser (who had Aces) bets 3k and Simon pushed for 4,850 more.  LP called with Aces, only to find Zach holding Ac Qc instead. The case ace came on the turn and no club on the river. Stuart Rutter said, "I was convinced Simon had Jacks, the problem was he didn't have enough to make the other guy pass but it was still a good call with the aces. If he (Simon) had had 5k more or so, then perhaps that would've been enough."

Richard Redmond knocks out Aida Airs. Q-Q against 9-9, all-in on the turn on of an A-2-9-Q-A board.

Wesley Lopez is OUT, J-J against Big Dave Smith's K-K.

The first break approaches - chip counts will follow.  I was just about to get a couple of the requests counted first, when I had the horrible realisation that I hadn't put my contact lenses in and couldn't count any chips, or see the board cards with anything resembling clarity.  I am going back to the hotel in the break to regain the power of sight.

I got as far as asking Homer to count Womble's stack - 15k the answer.   He's pictured below, in striking stripey knitwear.

Sadly he's at the bar, he got crippled in a multiway pot holding a flush against a full house, he then had A-5 on an A-3-5 board only for Jac Arama to be holding 2-4 in the big blind, all the chips going in by the river. Stu Rutter also got just caught, betting 4.5k into an 8k pot on a 3h 9d Js 2c 3d board, his opponent eventually calling with Jc 9c Rutter forced to show Ts 2s.

John Duthie taking a break from running a tour, to play in one.

Niall O'Gribin.

That's Paul Zimbler in the background, the picture is being swallowed up by Roland's shirt...

Greek Jack, (with Chris Bruce left and Peter Gould far right) bets 2.8k on a 6s Jc Ts 3c board getting his opponent to muck.

That might not be happening, he's only got about 2.3k left, but that's still 2k more than Paul Zimbler, who is preparing for his last stand...

Tikay, is UP from his starting stack. 25 chips up exactly...

Paul Zimbler just doubled his micro-stack up with Kd Qc all-in against Jd Js.  The board... 6s 6d Ahrt Aspades... river Qc.  Next door Paul King looks over to see Zimbler with nearly 1,000 chips and asks, "How did you get through that round?"

Interesting hand.

Nick Evans raises preflop and Dennis Clough calls.

Flop:

8c 8s 5c

Dennis checks, Nick bets 600, Dennis c/raises to 2.2k. Nick calls after a dwell.

Turn:

Tc

Now Dennis bets out 4k with about 6k behind. Nick dwells for ages, so long that I hear a scream from Joshua Tyler who rivers the nut straight on another table to win a big pot. Meanwhile Nick eventually moves all-in and Dennis mucks quickly...Nick shows Qs Jc.

Paul Webb is OUT with A-A vs the J-J of Suad Serhan, all-in preflop. Board: T-Q-K-J-Q!

Title: Re: Brighton GUKPT: Day 1B - Interactive
Post by: Djinn on May 18, 2007, 07:39:20 PM
David Young (pictured next to a narcoleptic-looking Paul King) went out literally seconds after this picture was taken.  He exited the card room, saying, "Out...top set...out," which he later elaborated on - he'd called an under the gun raise to 500 (blinds now 75/150) in the big blind with Jc Jd.  On a flop of J-T-8, he check-raised a bet of 800 to 3,000, only to find his heads up opponent pushing his whole stack in.  Apparently this person (identity unknown at time of posting) had been playing tight, and so David was surprised to see his top set all-in against 9c 9s.  The Queen completed that up and down straight draw however, and he found himself suddenly on the rail.

how is antoni romanello doing please

He's got about 15.5k, which is good, with the average being 13.3k at the moment.

Meanwhile Damian Evans pushed his last 4.7k in with 8s 8h on the board of 4c 9h 4h 5d after James Akenhead's 3.1k bet. It took James a little bit more time than it should to call with Qs Tc, 1.6k, with around 13k in the pot already. The river 4d giving Evans the double up.

Chip count in the list above - here's a grainy photoshop-lightened pic as he's in probably the darkest corner of a poorly lit card area.

Ks....At this point Warren gets up, 4d....He picks up his water bottle, Qd...water bottle back down, 9d...Warren sits back down, 9h...Warren rakes the chips.

John 'EPT' Duthie (pictured) is now OUT - only with the cracked Aces... against the 8-9 of Steve Jelinek.  Flop 8-T-J where the majority went in (what is it with these nines as straightening cards?  Tired and starting to see sinister patterns everywhere like that guy in Pi) and Jelinek hit and knocked him out.

6 limpers in a pot and it got big and complex and became a....

;bp;

Flop:

8c 5c 4d

Tikay checks, Peter Evans bets 900, Darren Ground flat-calls, Richard Redmond, raises to 3,000. Tikay moves all-in for his 2,500. Peter Evans calls, Darren Ground pushes all-in for what can only be described as a lot. Peter Evans calls, Richard Redmonds folds.

Tikay:

6d 2d

Peter Evans:

Ac 4c

Darren Ground:

5h 5d

Turn:

Ahrt

River:

9h

Tikay is OUT, Peter Evans has 1.1k and Darren Ground has close to 40k now.

Sidetracked on the last information-gathering foray by a cheerful Steve Read who says hello to his mysterious Watchers.  Here's a photo of him, and his stack: 12k.

Other pics:  Jac Arama, Vik Kanwar, Sandy Jackson-Palin.

They're all about to go on dinner break (probably 65 minutes again) and we'll have full counts for you after that.

Rudders is OUT -

With a stack of the hovering-around-average, he found himself in the big blind with Jh 7h, calling a raise to 800 along with a couple of others.  The flop came Jd 7d 3s and he checked - the initial raiser made it 1,500 to go.  "Ace-Jack," thought Rudders, correctly.
Then another player moved in over the top.  "Flush draw," thought Rudders, incorrectly, as he moved the rest of his stack in and found he was up against not only the AJ but a flopped set of Threes which stayed good all the way.

He seemed pretty cheerful, unwilling to grind his way into day Two with a small stack, having previously said something about Pab's agreement which sounded like, "Blow me," but couldn't possibly have been anything so rude.

A couple of chip counts, during the post-dinner full-count input lag (thanks to Jon Raab and team for collecting those numbers five times a day...):

Rod MacDonell - his seat is empty, with another person's seat card in it, which leads me to believe he is OUT
Maz Nawab     12,625  (Sitting next to Thewy who now has 15,000)
Steve Read     12,000
Greek Jack      14,600
Iwan Jones     11,600
JJ Hazan         13,250
Stuart Rutter   15,250  (We discovered in the break that Red Bull during tournaments is a no-no for him as, and I quote, "It makes me go crazy.  Not only will I be raising every hand, but I'll be jumping around..."  Tempted to spike him with caffeine just to watch the consequences.)

Womble is OUT. "I made a play!" Though when he talked about it, it seemed a completely rational move.

He raised preflop with Ahrt 5h, got 4 callers, bet a 9h 2h 5c board, got raised, and 3-bet all-in and was looked up by a hopeful, (considering Womble's style) A-9.

Also presumed to have bitten the dust are Paul King and Peter Gould.

Ah good evening, sir (or is it mid-afternoon where you are?) Just resting gently after the triple staircase run which is involved in getting to the Press Room.  I am going to be in much better shape for this year's WSOP since the Grosvenors booted the press from the tournament areas.

Hope all is well stateside, will write email when all this chaos is over...

Kevin O'Leary (the one who performed the double takedown of Rudders and, as it turs out, Richard Redmond in that set vs. top pair vs. two pair hand earlier): 37k+
Dave Smith   84,000  Chip leader by a good margin and already over all but the top two of yesterday's finishers.

Speak of Lucy, EPT Grand Finalist Steve Jelinek is having a tough time getting going due to Lucy's well chipped up stack three to his left. But on the plus side, he has finished that book he's always bringing to tournaments.

Damon D'Cruz as the Speak No Evil Brass Monkey.

Guess whose stack this is. A well-respected UK pro, who scares people with his constant raising, and he's going well so far here. Who is he?

Blind vs. Blind War News Now -

Small blind Chandra Khajuria and big blind Andrius Tapinas - small blind Chandra raised 600, Andrius re-raised, raise again (now there's over 14k in the middle) and then Andrius Tapinas got the final raise in by moving in for around another 12-13k.  The decision on the Helsinki-favouring genial player, he eventually passed giving his opponent what amounted to a flop-free double up.

Thanks to Jeff Kimber (pictured third, leaning out of shot, next to Dave Smith) for filling in the detail - I just saw the all-in and hovered until Khajuria gave it up.  Jeff says wistfully, "That pot's more than my chip stack in any Grosvenor Tour event so far."

I won't suggest a guess-the-stack for this one - the Hand Rankings propping it up might be a clue.  Yes, it's Mr. Cool Marc Goodwin, who, after a slow start has climbed to a respectable 25,000.

Julian is OUT.

He pushed from the button and both blinds called.

Flop:

9h 5h Qd

Now a sidepot emerges as the small blind check-calls the big blind 2k bet and Julian isn't looking thrilled.

Turn:

8h

The small blind now pushes, and Julian is looking even more worried, but the big blind passes. The Small Blind flips Ahrt 5s and suddenly Julian's Qh Js on for a triple up until the...

Just before the break Lucy Rokach (big blind) and Steve Jelinek saw a flop of Ahrt 9s 5c with a couple of others.  Short stack Steve bet 500 on the flop, only Lucy called.
Turn:  Qd Lucy checked, Steve bet 800; call.
River: 3c  Lucy checked, Steve bet 1,250 (leaving himself just 3k behind) and she called once more.
Steve, chagrined, showed Kd Th for a risky shortstack triple bluff, Lucy's Tc Td took the pot.

But then he doubled up off her a few hands after the break, so back to around 7k for the Monte Carlo finalist.

Mick Fletcher, now having been moved to Willie Tann's left. (The dealer is in between to prevent an explosion that could destroy half of Brighton). Anyway Mick just knocked out a short stack with 7s 3d on a 7h 4s 2h 6d 3c against Qh 3h. (Pic1)

Iwan Jones raises, another player pushes, Iwan dwells, clocked called, Iwan calls with Nines, and finds himself against Tens, he flops a Nine on an all diamond board, (neither has a diamond), the turn is a diamond, as is the river.

;kc;

Elsewhere, Anthony Romanello has his cut-off raise of 1,500 re-raised to 4,200 by Marc Goodwin. He asked Mr Cool for a count, and seeing the stack, decided not to press the issue. (Pic2)

Climber of the Day looks like it may well be heading towards Steve Jelinek - pictured here raking in what must be his third double up in the last level.  The chip counts Homer just put up have him at just 3,000 - what he was left with at the last break, but he's now on over 30,000!

Just now his most recent double saw him calling a 6k raise in position (leaving him with just under 10k behind) and then pushing in on the 4s Qh 8c flop when it was checked to him.  He got pretty much instacalled but with his opponent's Qs Ks no match for his Ahrt Qd, the harmless turn and river came out boosting him to his present comfortable chip position.

Willie Tann vs. Kwan Wai-Yuen (I think) pictured below, both in weary looking 'freeze' positions as they regard the river on a board of: 4s Td 4d 7c Jh.
Willie bets out 6k into a pot of around 10k... they sit still as statues for about a minute before Kwan calls, about a third of her stack.
The wily Tann shows 7d 7h...it's good.

He did add, "Am I climber of the day?" :D

Someone was asking about Daniel Jolowicz - this is him, right?  Next to Antonio Romanello (now - his table's just broken as they're under 70 runners now).
He just lost a chunk doubling up Ian Herbert after raising from the small blind, getting called, and then auto-betting the Kc 9c 8d flop (a smallish chunk of his remaining stack but enough to put his opponent all in).  Daniel's Aspades Qs had fallen behind the unexpected Jh 8h of Herbert though, and so he's down to around 30k.

Kevin O'Leary adds to his stack, raising Ad Ac, and getting Andrius Tapinas to push behind him with 9h 9c

Board:

Ahrt 4h Th 6d Td

Michael Ellis is OUT holding Kings on a Jh 3c 5s Qd board, but Mark Johnstone was holding Aces and the river was the Jd.

Chris Bruce has gone, his Nines failed to hold for a 32k pot against Ace Queen. Ace first card out.

And how about this for an odd hand...

Taner Hasan raises to 2,600 in early position, Ross Stovold makes it 6,600 from the cut-off with 12k back. Hasan calls.

Flop:

Jc 2c 9s

Check check.

Turn:

Qc

Hasan goes to bet then decides to check. Stovold shoves and Hasan insta-calls.

Stovold:

Kc Qs

Hasan:

Ac 9d

River:

8d

Any thoughts on this hand? Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Bueller?

Neighbours Damon D'Cruz (short stack) and Chandra Khajuria (whom I always catch in the middle of losing a pot but always seems to have increased his stack on each check  :dontask:  ) see a raised-called (by Khajuria) flop of Aspades Ahrt Js.  I don't know whether Damon just pushed straight away for his 10k or so or whether he check-called all-in but Chandra's Ad Qd had found the perfect flop to pay off Damon's now miles-ahead Ac Jh.
________________________________

Meanwhile Kevin O'Leary finds himself in a strange pot with Darren Ground - on a Qd Ks 6d flop, with 17k already in the pot, it looked like Lovejoy had bet out only for his opponent to shove for his whole stack - a (over)bet of 37k total.  Kevin thinks for an age before passing, what he said was A-K...

Meanwhile Lucy Rokach is continuing to bully herself over 50k, towards 60k... she did seem instrumental in, if not tilting, then at least nudging Marc Goodwing pre exit.  One time he raised her big blind and she just shoved an enormous chunk of chips in as a re-raise, pretty much committing Marc if he wanted to play.  He passed, but you can still hear him telling Matt Dale in the bar about what kind of play he thought that was... in any case she's been raking in many a small pot, and coming out on the right side of the big ones she's been in.  Willie Tann, watching her during a previous break, said to me, "She's a demon!"  How about a Tann/Rokach heads up match on the final table....

Kevin Bond and Dave Clark are OUT, whilst Darren Ground is developing a huge stack...

Elsewhere Stuart Rutter raises to 2.4k preflop before betting 5k on the 7h 4c 4s board, getting the big blind to pass. Rutter shows Pocket Tens. (Not the Wilson, I was mildly disappointed with the non-scarf wearing man).

Seeing as we keep getting kicked out of one hotel around 11am and have to do some lobby snoozing before being allowed to get back to sleep in the next one (who would have thought an entire town would be full) we really ought to be off.
