Title: Green Joker Poker Festival
Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 25, 2007, 03:21:28 PM
So it starts today, but last night Jen and I went to play the €50 rebuy, trying to see if we could get in the tournament cheaply. The club itself is pretty much brand new, (in fact they're still fitting it as we enter). The structure for the satellite was good, 2k chips and a 30 minute clock with 90 minutes for rebuys. 3k chips for a rebuy and 5k chips for the add-on. After the rebuy, the clock went down to 25 minutes but the dealers were all excellent and it didn't feel like a crapshoot. The actual structure itself was basically the same as the GUKPT, complete with running antes (for a satellite? I know!). I managed to knock out an early short stack with Q-Q against T-T before losing all my chips with 7-6 against Q-J on a K-T-8-9 board. After a rebuy and an add-on, it became a bit of a limpfest, 4 people limped, so I did two with Jc 8h on the button, and the blinds made up.

The flop came Aspades Td 7d which was checked round, then on the turn was a beautiful 9h, the small blind now bets 600, the big blind calls, the utg limper and one other limper both call. I re-raise to 3k, the big blind and the utg limper both call, the other two fold. The river is the 2s, a nice blank as I'm up against a flush draw and a two pair/one pair with a straight draw combination. They both check, I bet 3.5k, the big blind passes, and the utg limper calls with Ad 2d.

Shortly afterwards the guy who had called me in the previous hand, re-raises my 1,050 open raise from 2nd position (with 9-9) to 2,700, he only has 8,000 back. I pass after convincing him to show, he shows 8-8, yuck. A few hands later, mid position open shoves for about 5k, (blinds 150/300/25) I look down and have 9-9 again, I've got about 16k at this point, average being about 14k, and I don't think he has a big hand, at most he has overcards, so I call and he shows 8-8. Hurrah! Got this one right, I house up and am up to 22k. A few hands later, the A-2 guy (who is a bit of a calling station) limps utg again, a new player also limps for 300 too, I look down and have Aces on the button. I pop it up to 1.5k, utg calls, other guy folds. Flop is 4-5-6 rainbow, he checks to me and I bet 3,500 into the 4,250 pot. He check/raises all-in for 6,025 more. I call and he shows 3-3, turn is a 6, but the river is a 2 and I lose a 22k pot which would've given me 2 and a half times the average stack. Instead I'm back down to 10k and the blinds go up to 200/400/50.

I limp utg+1 with 6-6, and the A-2 guy makes it 1,700 from mid position, passed round to me and I decide to make a play, with 3k in the pot, I think a push will take him off many pairs bigger than mine, and I think he can only call me with JJ+ or AK+, so I push for 10k and I get insta-called by Kings. Oops.

Jen however, despite playing only 3 hands in the first 3 levels struggled manfully on, but sickeningly she finished 9th, (7 seats, €190 for 8th) when her Kings were cracked by Jacks (who called for 3/4 of his stack) which 4-flushed. We drink lots of rum and decide it's better to lose in the sat than today in the main event which...crap...starts in 40 minutes. We best go!

There's no internet at the club, so Antes up can't do live updates, and actually they do great updates imo, so I don't think it's fair to be so critical.

Well, Jen, Rookieitb and I are still in. Rookie may probably want to chirp and I'm sure Jen will add her own thoughts when she gets a minute. I started off slowly, missing a lot of draws and calling off about 2.5k on a Ad 8d Kc 3s board with 5d 2d against A-K and A-Q and missed the river. (utg min-raised! I can't pass for 100!) Gradually I built my stack back up and began hitting hands and taking down pots, I hit a flush with 7c 3c against 4c 5c then after dinner flopped a couple of sets too. Everything was going good and I built up my stack to around 26k which was about average, though my table gradually got tougher and tougher. On the last level with 30 minutes to go and blinds at 400/800, utg raised to 3000. Connor Smythe (or it Smith? Anyway he won the Stars warm-up last weekend) pushes for 16k, I look down and have Ks Kh and push for 26k, utg passes, Connor flips Ad Kc and turns the Ace which leaves me with just 12k, if I win I'm up to 45k but it's not meant to be, I lose another 2.2k passing Kc Qc to a Eoin Olin (incredibly nice guy) re-raise who shows me Ahrt Qs before check/raising a limper all-in with Js 3s on a Kc Jh 3c board and I ended up on 12.1k. Blinds start at 500/1000 tomorrow and Lloyd, who won this event last year, reminds me he came back from 4 and a half big blinds last time. So I've probably got an hour at least. I'm already wearing my shovetastic hat...

Homer is such a luckbox. I had to grind my way up, making it 600 to play 2nd to act with Ah 2h and getting called from the BB and Buttpn. The Flop was 4h 5h 9h, and when the BB checked i put out a feeler bet to see where i was, 1025. The button smooth calls and the BB then makes it 4k. I have 22k approx and they both have me covered. I flat call the raise and hope for a blank turn. But, alas, the button then shoves and the BB shoves too, i pretty much beat them both into the pot, and am happyto see them both drawing dead with Qh 7h and 3h 6h. A cheeky 66k pot to me :)
I had no other real hands but position raises and continuation bets got me up to 88k until i get involved in a bluff involving a 6.5k turn bet with Ac 3h on a K 10 5 5 board, the guy, i must say, deserved an oscar for the time he took to put the rest of his chips in. He took so long that i basically folded before his chips went over the line i was so bored. I have finished the day with 73,400 so am happy with that.

PS, i have the easiest BB ever to steal too.............. (just dont tell her i said that!) ;)

I am Average in every way.  What a lengthy day, broken by the ray of sunshine represented by re-raising Ian Woodley at every possible opportunity (with the goods, every time, of course).  Matt joined our table and it was generally fun listening to the two of them bicker... I won't regale you with any boring hands (for I have no drama to report), just my Quote of the month:

Ian Woodley:  "[general nattering about previous hand]...and that didn't work.  I might start just talking a pile of crap..."
Matt Tyler:  "You know I can hear your thoughts..."

Oh OK I will just say that I am very pro this tournament - what a great structure and a lot of fun.  Just have to wait and see what happens tomorrow...

Hi all, I bust out of this last night after making the worst fold of my life (I aint posting here, I'd cry).

This is the most fun structure I've ever played, everyone is still seeing plenty of flops and there is some really creative (and occassionaly downright insanse) play going on. Plus there are toasted sandwhiches and penguin bars.

Careful of the cash games though, they're all nutters

I'm out with about 4 tables left, racing Ahrt Qs against Tc Th, dealer tortured me a little dealing a Kc Qc 6c flop followed by a Ts turn and a Qh river. Jen just doubled up to about 40k with aces and Rookie has about 150k or something after he luckboxed expertly defeated Aces with Queens all in preflop. There's about 30 people left and the blinds are 1k/2k with average about 60k. Money pays at 13 and first is £36,000ish. Ian Woodley, Kevin O'Connell and last year's winner Lloyd all still in too.

I'm off for a drink.

No chance I'm afraid, there's no wireless at the club. I can tell you there's 27 left, and the plan is to play down to at least the money. Though if they get to 10 left at 3am, they might decide to carry on to leave just 9.

Rooks is back over 100k after racing Jacks against b4matt's Ace King. Matt still has 60k. Avg is 100k. Blinds 2k/4k

Jen has gone over 100k too, apparently making a sick but correct call with Ace Jack against Ian Woodley's re-raise all-in to knock him out. He had Ace Ten. 19 left.

Perhaps if one or both make the final tomorrow, I'll take my laptop down and maybe fill in a couple of updates on this thread in between playing the €300 event.

I can confirm to anyone reading this that it is a fantastic tourney with a structure you won't beat. I did my best to defend my title - wasn't to be. Good luck to Jen.

Jen has made the final. She has 244k, (avg is 210k), most stacks however have between 220 and 290k only Kevin O'Leary is really short, blinds will start at 3k/6k. Rob Bright is still in. Matt Tyler went out to an absolute sickener just before the money when he pushed with Tens versus a button raiser who insta-called with A-9, the board coming 7-8-x-T-6.

I'm probably going to bring my laptop with me to the €300 event tomorrow and hopefully I'll be able to post the occasional update. I think Mike Lacey will put up the full chip counts on this thread later.

Yes, final bound after a long day two, where levels like the 600/1,200 and the 2,500/5,000 kept popping out of the woodwork.  I wasn't above average chips once over  the two days until about three levels before the end, when stuff went my way (notably calling Ian Woodley's preflop raise with AA and getting a double up thanks to his KQ hitting top pair on the Q-7-7 flop) and then some other stuff went my way too.  By the time I was in a race position and lost it, I had loads of chips so it didn't matter - what a difference from normal.

It was great to play with the people I remember from last year (and covering at the Irish Open etc.) including Lucky Lloyd, Dave Callaghan and Jim Reid, Matt and Ian too..in fact everyone cool, and the club staffed by good dealers and tea is served in enormous mugs.  There must be some kind of gag opportunity I'm missing there, but I am a bit tired.

I only buy in to one or two biggish buy in comps a year - this one and/or Helsinki, and I can't recommend it highly enough for next time.  That's not just cause I'm still in either...

Am feeling sick still after a few sickeners from 30 out, including 99 on a J 9 4 two club board being flushed on, and 24 checking the bb vs sb and the flop coming K 2 4, he's holding K2. I managed to win one race just before the 2 4 incident so the winnings from that one went straight away. I then sit tight after being moved to new table - 15 left and i have 55k. 2.5k/5k blinds. I find 77 from 4th pos, and for some reason, i find a fold when they all pass to me. I dont know if this was right or not but the tight player at the table raised and picked up the blinds. Next hand KK, make it 16k and shove on flop without knowing what had come, it was a J 10 7 flop and he had called my raise with JJ. Still feeling sick now. 15th, looks like a deal was done for 14th which makes me feel alot better!

Anyway, good luck Jen, very good player and i hope you take this down. Unlucky to Matt too. Good Luck Kev O too.

3 handed here, Jen and two other guys. I'm on the wireless here, but she's taken the first 4 pots down after a break. Blinds are 8k/16k and they've all roughly got stacks between 500k and 900k, it's hard to tell.

Rookieitb and I donked off in the €300, he got his set outdraw by top two pair, and my re-raise all-in with a straight and flush draw got insta-called by an overpair, so we're here railing here, along with BA and Barry (Dave Shoelace) Carter.

Jen just called a 30k bet on a 5-8-A-Q-2 board that was checked to the river against the bb, her 6-5 is good.

Thomas Nolan's 5c 3d vs Jay O'Toole's s Ad 3s on a Jc 3c 9c board between the other two players, inexplicably they both get their chips all-in, but the Qd and 9d turn give it to Jay who is the chip leader now. Jen is second now, Thomas is short with about 350k.

Title: Re: Green Joker Poker Festival
Post by: NoflopsHomer on May 27, 2007, 09:32:43 PM
8s Kc Jd 8c 4s board and once again all the chips go in, and this time it's on the river between Jay and Thomas, Jay O'Toole's Ac 8d has Thomas's 8h 2s outkicked.

This leaves Jen and Jay HU, but Jay has Jen outchipped by about 2:1. Jen has 686k, Jay O'Toole has 1.2 million

9c 7c 4c flop, Jay limp-reraised with Jc 9h and pushes on the flop, Jen passes Ahrt Qh.

Short break due to the fact the new dealer came, sat down and bumped the table knocking both stacks over.

Jen limps, Jay raises and Jen calls

It all goes in on a 6s 3s 3d board, Jay has 5h 5c but Jen has 7d 6c

Turn is Td,

River is Ac.

So Jen is the Green Joker Poker II Champion!!! And she can't stop giggling. Barry Carter and Mike will post some photos later I'm sure.

Absolutely delighted for her. :) :) :)

Battery is dying. Got to go and celebrate!

hey jen,

just home from sky poker and could not be more pleased. thiis is no surprise to me as i have mentioned to you on many occasions. the only virtue that outweighs your skill, is your humility.

you are a star. the world of poker is at your feet.

i'm sure rowland will give you 50% if you but him into the main event.

love

norman and bev

I just arrived back in London and am amazed at the support for me during this event - I had to have a hot shower post hostel lack of hot water before coming on to say thanks for all your encouragement and kind words.  I spent the last three days pretty much in an internet blackout, no email, no nothing, just sleep/play/watch Chris' Futurama DVDs, repeat, or would have said so earlier!

I have been raving about the structure, running and organisation of this event since I played it last year, and there was never any doubt that it would be the one thing I definitely attended this year.  It happens to have worked out well, :) but anyone who's listened to me during updates telling them how I've already booked my £1 flight on Ryanair knows that that's not the reason it's getting a good write up (when I've slept).

Thanks to Mike plus team of dealers for putting on a slick show, and Chris - I know you weren't playing Pong when you had your laptop out at the final table like you said...

In brief (elaboration beyond me currently) it was a pleasure playing with everyone who was out there and graced my table, wincingly unlucky Dave O'Callaghan for running your KK smack into my AA, and a continuous Subway party with Noflops, Barry Carter and BA Kildalen.

I got a trophy too which I checked in on Ryanair (big mistake) as despite being covered with Fragile stickers it was put in with the normal luggage and I eventually discovered it, after a half hour of patiently staring at the Oversize conveyor, going round the regular one in two (whole!) pieces, with its box and bubble wrap and my clothes I'd put round it for extra padding all going round separately.  I thought about leaving the pants and base and just legging it with the glass bit, but did the Gather of Shame and made it out of Stansted eventually.

Many thanks again,

Jen

Hi Jen,
Just to say well played... For those that dont know me, I was Jens final victim HU in Drogheda. You played some gr8 poker and I loved the aggressive play especially ur raise with Q8 off suit to me smooth calling with the QQ thinking im gonna get loadsa chips here only to split the pot eh... Ah well... I really dont know what I was doing with the call on the end with 55. I called too quickly and even put you on an over pair to the board but I dont wanna take away from your win.

It was a great tourny despite the venue not fully complete but the builders were working day n night to get it sorted.

People should not miss this event. Great structure, great background team, dealers etc etc

Best of luck Jen for future events and see you again soon

Jay

Can I say that Jay was a true gent after that heads-up match and got everyones attention to give Mike and the boys a round of applause for such a great tournament, I think he also got a round of drinks in but that bits a bit hazy to me so I cant be sure. Very good player too and a great tournament for everyone (including my impressive 64th place finish).

The toasted sandwhiches were nice too.

Jen - are you insured?

In brief (elaboration beyond me currently) it was a pleasure playing with everyone who was out there and graced my table, wincingly unlucky Dave O'Callaghan for running your KK smack into my AA, and a continuous Subway party with Noflops, Barry Carter and BA Kildalen.

I was fairly sick over that one alright, but nothing 3 days drinking hasn't cured! Seriously well played Jen I was delighted that you won it, you played incredibly well while I was at your table and even though you are a sick luckbox for waking up with the AA there you played perfectly the whole tournament from what I can see and it's a testament to the structure that the winner was of such a high calibre.

One thing though, seeing as you got most of your chips from coolering me any chance of easing the pain a bit and telling me what you had at the end of day two when I folded AQ to your rereraise from the button?  ;)
