500/1k with a 100 ante.

With the blinds starting at 500/1,000 ante 100, the stacks around the starting stack mark are in pretty desperate shape and they have been throwing their chips in with wild abandon in the hope of doubling and then doubling again to a properly playable stack. 

Kevin Poast, for example, is OUT after shoving in late position with what turned out to be Kd 2c for only 6k - big blind Alex Scullion thought for longer than you might imagine before calling with his Aspades Jc to knock him out.

Meanwhile Hitsquad member and Bluesquare sponsored player Karl Mahrenholz picks up Qh Qd just in time to bust the Ac Js of Pete Linton.  Check out the evil eye being cast his way by neighbour Iwan Jones as he rakes in some more chips to add to The One Tower.

It's 500 1k with a 100 ante at the start of today.

As expected, some chips have already been flying about and we have some early casualties...

Denis Omahoney started the day with 14k so was under some pressure to get some chips going. AK's a fine hand for that but mateyboy's 9 9 held on a blank board and IrishDenis departs the competition with a shrug and a smile.

Dan Owston is also OUT.

Shortstacked with just 3025 chips he shoved allin in late position and was called in 2 spots by S Hogg and Richard Herbert.

Dan probably realised this wasn't a good sign and Hogg realised his bacon was cooked and passed.

Richard flipped up K8h for the flush and Dan's TT was no good...but he did a great job of cheering himself on during the hand football style. Good game Dan.

With news that one of the early chip leaders Lucy Rokach has run into some bother, it is a pretty manic start!

Mustn't forget Strummer9 who rumour has it bought a packed of fags on the way down when he heard my missus wouldn't be there to keep him in supplies :)

Arghghg, just got a text from Lucy R about losing two big pots... Not sure if it means she's out or not though... I hope not!!  ;pokergods;

Lucy Rokach is OUT!

From big stack to the felt - it can happen in just a couple of key hands, and one of them just happened... She'd already lost about half of her pretty hefty starting chips in one big pot, and now got involved with equally chipped up Paul Lawrence.  I saw it from the flop where Lawrence was inspecting the pot (around 10k) and the board (9d 8h 6s) before betting 10,600.  Lucy called quickly.
Turn: 3s  Again, he bet 10,600 precisely.  Lucy called more quickly still.
River:  7s  Now Lawrence checked and faced a counted-down all-in of 13,000.  He wasn't happy about it, and thought for a good while, before eventually coming off the fence on the Call side.

He showed:  Ad 8c
Lucy Rokach showed: Qc Jd

And the early aggressor and chip leader has now joined the procession heading for the rail or the bar, which is quickly becoming a river of disappointed ex-players.

Kevin Taunton  has been knocked out of the competition.

Holding AJ his allin move was called by Jason Shelhum, whose AQ held on a Q 9 9 blank blank board to win him a nice pot.

John Kabbaj, one of the most experienced players in the competition has just been involved in a hand with Mohammed Barkatu.

After a few thousand chips went into the pot preflop, both players liked the flop, John getting his shortish stack in with JT on a 9s 7d Ts flop.

Mohammed Barkatu's 88 had less outs than he thought it would and the A and Q on the turn and river changed nothing, granting a timely double up to 35k or so for John Kabbaj.

Charalambos Xanthos has had a good start and looks to have bolstered his 55k stack up to 85k or so...

Glen Martin has doubled up at the expense of Steve Littlejohn.

Steve had called a riase preflop with 99 and liked the look of the 8c 7s 2c flop, but Glen had an easy call with his stack size and QQ and he took it down and looks to have moved to around 30-35k.

Marc Goodwin is another of the day's early risers, moving his stack to around the 90k mark.

Mark Herron is on around 40k at this stage.

Nick Gibson, who is wielding what appears to be a Vic's inhaler as though it was a £50 Havana cigar is looking focused and up for all eventualities and has the stack to cause mischief...

Unlucky to Lucy. I think she played the hand above and the previous hand (folding AK to an all in - after re-raising a raise and a reraise.. hope that makes sense lol ;)) very well.

Sadly the original blonde, ElBlondie Dave Colclough is OUT.

Holding Ks6s on a 5s 8s 8d board, he committed himself to the flop and was called by the TT of Jonathan Martin.

A virtual flip, Dave missed his outs and joined the swelling crowds who have been sent to the rail in this lightning first hour.

There are now 89 players remaining, the average stack is 47k and the blinds are a meaty 600 1200 with a 100 ante.

Really, calling 2 streets with q high and a gutshot then donking the river when she will never get her opponent to fold any hand. Now I respect Lucy's game and her results, but this is just horrid.

Snoopy's stack size hasn't changed dramatically since the start...

As I join him, he is yawning to give the impression he is just a tired dog but this is all clearly a well rehearsed trap to fool his tablemates.

After a little gentle ribbing from his neighbour, Jeff Kimber, Snoopy warns him and anyone else within earshot "I'm the table maniac, don't mess with me."

Joe Grech has been eliminated, running his pocket Jacks into Carl Buskirk's QQ, Carl now sitting on a big stack that looks to be over the 80k mark.

I think he almost did.  There was some genuine consideration...

Any news on Ian Herbert and Iwan Jones please

The Luck of the Short Stacks has completely dried up.  Some days, it takes hours to knock out the small stacks who just can't seem to lose a race, but today no matter how ahead they get it in, those near the felt are smacking into it, almost without exception.

For a start - Jeff Rogers all in on the big blind with Tc Ts (he'd dropped from around 35k to a stack which was coverable by his opponent John Dwyer, who himself had come back with just 11,975).  Small blind Dwyer was giving his all-in a spin with his Aspades 2d, all in the middle preflop.
Flop: 4c 4h 9h
Turn:  Ahrt  A dispirited Rogers stands up in frustration and kind of stalks off as the 9s comes down, Dwyer says, "Sorry," and another guy at the table starts telling him off for apologising, all at the same time. 

Dwyer does seem to be a genuinely nice guy (although remorse is not something suitable for the poker table, generally) - JungleCat and I stole his taxi last night by running a bit up the road and hailing it in front of him.  He took it very well, and we decided to share the cab as we were all heading North.  An occasional player who enjoys the game rarely (five times a year, I remember him saying he played) he seems to be enjoying the whole thing immensely and wasn't fazed by the prospect of returning short stacked on Day Two and promptly going home again.  That hasn't happened yet, however, and he has around 25k.

Iwan Jones just busted, I'm afraid, and with a slightly peculiar set of circumstances.  He only had 15,300 left, and it all went in preflop utg+1.  Carl Buskirk, two positions to Jones' left, with a big stack in front of him, asked how much it was and promptly called.  It folded all the way round and they were heads up.
Iwan showed:  Ad Kc
Carl showed: Js 9s    Iwan double took and then shrugged...

Flop: 5s 6d Qc
Turn: Th
River:  9h     "Same old same old..." sighed Iwan as he got up and wished his table good luck in the same tone in which you thank a deaf old relative for some paisley socks.

Requested Players Ian Cox, Daniel Rudd and Mark Banin are all on the same table... they are about to go on a break (in five minutes) and that's not long enough for me to get back to the card room, so pictures and words on these three when play recommences.

I didn't get a chance to speak to him but my rudimentary chip counting skills led me to beleive he had in the region of 55k.

Nikhil Persaud is OUT!

Raising ot 2.5k in early position with 9k back, he was asked how much he had behind by S Nikkhah.

"just under 10k" to which Nikkhah announced "Raise 10k." Everyone else got out of the way quickly and it was back to Nik.

He now began to shuffle uncomfortably. With so few chips back and getting 2-1 he made the call, although felt like he was probably dominated and this was the case as Nikkhah showed AQ to his A9.

The cards came down quickly and the 9 Nik was looking for failed to materialise, sending him to the rail.

With all the carnage of bust-outs from short stacks to near-leaders, someone must be benefitting: here's one of those coming out of the early destruction not just unscathed but positively healthy - Nick Gibson, one of the first players Tikay introduced me to seasons ago... he's up to 140,000 and understandably cheerful.

When I spoke to him a short time ago Ian looked slightly frustrated at being "card dead" but he has enough chips to last a little time he told me. With all the crazy chips flying around, he should be able to find some good spots I'm sure...

Table Snoopy has seen quite a bit of action, with his original table breaking last level.  He found time to tell me that Reyaaz Mulla was unlucky r.e. his exit - having raised pre and been called by both blinds, the flop came J-J-x.  He slowplayed his Qc Qs here, eventually getting it in on the 5 turn, only to find that the blinds player who'd bet out the flop actually had 5-5 and busted him there and then.

Anyway, my attention came back to the current (then) hand, in which on the turn Jamil Ogunmakinwa had moved in for something like 45k - on a board of 9d Tc 4s Ahrt.

There was already nearly 50k in the pot - this was a re-raise, and a big one.  His opponent, on the button, dwelling, was Simon Randall, who had a pretty hefty stack - a call of 45k represented about half of what he had behind at this time.  He dwelled for a while, finally picking up a chip and saying, "Flip a coin."  He caught the chip, looked at it, said, "Shit," and promptly called. 
Randall showed: Td 9h
Ogunmakinwa showed: 9s 9c  and doubled through to around 150k.  "I would've folded if it had come down the other side," he lamented.

John Kabbaj has become a card rack at just the right time. Only on 22k at the break not long ago, he has turned this round by receiving 2 full double ups with Aces twice in 5 hands and is now sitting not far off the 100k mark.

The 2nd time Mohammed Barkatu was the unfortunate donator, calling John's raise with KQ and flopping top pair, but no good against John "Aces magnet" Kabbaj.

UpTheMariners has just taken down a pot. Facing a raise to 5,500 from David Dean in the cutoff UTM made it 11,300 more which Dean folded to after the customary pause to make it look like he had a hand :)

Adam Heller and Carl Buskirk are vying for the lead at the moment.

Marc Goodwin is OUT.

Raising to 8k with 88, he was reraised allin for 45k.

"You've got AK at best" said Marc, "Let's give 'em a spin" and called.

His opponent turned over the slightly suprising AJ but hit a J to win the pot and send Marc to the rail.

Mark Banin is on circa 44k and Ian Cox, having doubled up early on, is doing ok with 42k or so.

Matt Myford just moved his relative short stack into the middle and was called by his next door neighbour, Luke Trotman in an AT v KQ faceoff.

An interesting board of Ts 8h 3c Jd left Matt sweating the river, but he managed to draw a brick rather than excrete one as a T river to give him trips ensured a full double up to 30-35k or so.

After sam trickett and I were KO'd last night we decided to hit the town and ended up in an underground bar/club which had old skool hip-hop kareoke on which was a great laff, unfortunately it was too late to blast out one of the classics like, "aint nothin but a G-thing" "ice ice baby" "insane in the membrane" or various wu-tang and NWA joints we had listened to for a bit.

We then decided to hit club Fabric, where sam realised he had lost his phone and i realised moisture had gotten into my screen and f**ked it up, so i drunkenly tried to text a reward message to sams phone without the use of my screen! what price it was sent? i decided in typical fashion that id nip back to the casino, and play in the big £10-£10 cash game with messers duval, lloyd, channing, etc... and span my £500 up to £2100 before getting all in on a Qd5c7c  flop with QKcc for a £5200 pot vs mr duvall who had called £225 preflop with 75os which held. Pretty fun night tbh. Just wish i ran aswell as flushy @ live cash r.e 6 card omaha hand from luton.

One of the best players i have played against in a long time. Is an absolute certainty to win a big comp soon. I played my normal strategy and lost a 35k pot when i 3-bet the flop with the nuts flush draw vs chicken joe, who cant lay a down a hand and missed my 12 outs. Some would say i played it too aggro, but thats my style. Get Stacked or get drunk.

Shame, that most blondes have bitten the dust, GL to snoops and the rest of the good guys left in. need to Sleeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

Steve Littlejohn has just gone at the hands of Brian Gilbert.

Steve was holding JJ, Brian AA and a turn A and river A for quads hammered home Brian's advantage, winning him a big 80k pot and sending Steve on his way.

Jamie Moult just won a big pot knocking out Simon Randall.  They were threeway to a flop of 9s 4s 6d, and Moult moved all in for 31,500 (the pot around half that).  Randall squirmed for a minute, having made the call in later position than Moult preflop and now faced with a decision to call all in, with one player left behind him to act.  He eventually went for it, the Third Man got out of the way, and they were on their backs:

Jamie Moult:  Ad 9h
Simon Randall:  7s 3s

The turn and river were non-straightening non-flushing Qh 2d and Randall's gamble didn't pay off leaving him out and Moult on around 75,000.  As he left I may have had a quizzical expression on, but that was to do with how the preflop action went so that Randall ended up in a raised pot with 7-3 suited - did he raise, call a raise?  No idea - and that's the missing piece of the story - may try to catch Mr. Moult in the dinner break.  Perhaps misreading my puzzlement, Randall said to me, "In case you're wondering, if he's got A-K, I'm actually favourite."  I thanked him and decided now was not the time to ask about the preflop action.

40 players remain...and with 36 paid things have slowed considerably as bubble dodging becomes the order of the day for many.

This is not slowing down John Kabbaj who I saw raising several times, once from the cut off to 7k, all pass and the 5.6k in blinds and antes was picked up(he didn't show).

Once more from UTG raised to 8k this time, all fold and this time he shows the AdQd. Another 5.6k thank you.

Nick Gibson also appears to be using his big stack well, raising from middle position and picking up the blinds and antes before shuffling his cards round to find an ace to show...

Surinder Sunar is OUT. No details of his exit hand at the moment.

Richard Herbert busted earlier this level (been having connection problems for the rest of it) - raising under the gun after, "Playing like a rock for ages," which fact didn't put off Matey from re-raising him all in with A-J - Herbert's Tc Th failed to hold and so close to the money he does the Walk of Shame instead, looking irritated more than shamed.

Adam Heller has just busted another of the shortstacks, Owen Lock,  agonisingly close to a payday.

He has blessed with some nice hands and found KK at the same time Owen found AK, ensuring they were going to get in a preflop tangle.

No surprises from the board, and Adam Heller's stack grows ever larger and Owen moves away to regale his friends with stories of his bad luck and unfortunate timing...

M Hayes has been knocked out after seeing a K hi flop with 2 spades, he commited his chips and was called by the A9s of the chipped up Leo Kam and a spade river finished Hayes off...

38 players remain....

There was one more knockout to bring us down to 37 making it BUBBLE TIME...

Which doesn't last long as we have out bubbler and I'm afraid to say it was Blondite, Daniel Rudd aka UpTheMariners.

His executioner was also a blondite, Ian Cox.

The hand played out that Daniel made it 7k from the cutoff and Ian reraised to 22k. Daniel then pushed for another 54k.

Given the tough decisions both players made the hand started with 40 left and finished with 37 left by the time all the dwelling was done.

Ian eventually made what must have been a fairly difficult call with JJ and was rewarded by being shown 99 in the hands of Daniel Rudd.

The flop gave Daniel a flush draw and additional hope but blanked out to give the giant pot to Ian and push him up with the leaders. Sadly Daniel became the 37th placer, one off the money, and will be feeling a bit sick inside but he played a good tournament from what I saw and can be proud of his performance.

Snoopy's forty-something thousand chips looked great at the start of today, but don't look so comfortable now... Just before the bubble he did move all in after Carl Buskirk limped in late position and Priyan de Mel made up the small blind.  Whatever he had on the big blind, it was time for Snoops to push and push he did... with no calling. 

A couple of hands later (this is still a pre-bubble story) Priyan de Mel raised preflop to 7,200, and found Adam Wilkinson re-raising to 31,200 (which left him just 15k behind).  Priyan considered for a minute and opted to just call this large committed-looking preflop re-raise... they saw the flop: Th Jd 5s.  Wilkinson checked, and de Mel threw out enough yellow 5k chips to cover him.  He went into the tank, and eventually passed - showing 8d 8h and leaving himself with just 15k...  Haven't been back down there in a while to check on how the doubling up (or not) is going, but I imagine action will have been faster now that everyone's in the money....

As soon as the bubble burst there has been a rash of knockouts including Paul Lawrence, Adam Wilkinson and Joel Ettegi, no doubt all trying to gamble their stack up to something worthwhile now they have locked up a payday.

I remember Jon Raab said they would play down to 27 today and to the final tomorrow, but with 12th only getting £430 more than 27th, I can see it going from 3 to 2 tables very quickly tomorrow.

Sunny Chattha was just involved to some extent in a biggish pot. One of the shorterstacks pushed allin and Sonny called, only to find the now chipped up Ian Cox behind him setting him allin.

Sunny passed after a long dwell with 99...

The shorter stack, who I believe was Michael Fletcher had AK and Ian Cox also revealed AK when the cards were turned over...

The flop came blank, blank, blank, NINE, blank which must have been painful for Sunny who would have close to trebled up on that hand and he showed his frustration, walking away from the table loudly lamenting "I knew he had AK, I knew it, I knew it...."

As it is the lack of flushing cards meant the pot was chopped between Ian and Michael.

29 players remain, 2 more eliminations until we know our Day 3 lineup...

This Action Shot shows Charles Denton's Aces doubling up against the Kings of (now short stacked) Simon Eastwood.  In the money now, so everyone eliminated receives £2,160 up to 27th place which will pay £3,030 - but that's where play is scheduled to stop for the night.

This one shows Alan Boyle doubling through off of Carl Buskirk (like Snoopy just did a minute ago....)

This time Boyle made a bit of a last-stand move with Aspades 7h, and was understandably sad when Buskirk called in the small- until he turned over Ad 6d.  The board brought four hearts so a flush took a few of Carl's chips and gave The Jumper a new lease of life.

GUTTED!!! the reason for my reshove was id just showdown a5 on the button and took a tidy pot. i then raise the next hand and bainn takes ages and tells me im stealing. he then folds and ian reraises i think hes just restealing, so i shove. after a dwell for about 10/15mins i really think im good, if not a coin flip. i was devastated when he flipped over jj and it was hand for hand!!!!

UL UTM think in that spot the table talk is bang out of order, a player who a) is not in the hand or b) has no intention of getting involved should keep his trap shut whether he suspects there is stealing going on or not. One of my pet hates in poker. As the chat took place, you made your hand look a lot stronger than the 99 and the JJ could have gotten away. your long dwell may have done you some harm though as he expects QQ KK AA to instapush whereas your dwell must have made your hand look like 99 TT AQ imo. Its shit when all the players come round all praying you bubble. Great effort mate WP.

Carl Buskirk, the unpredictable chip leader has been aggressively raising Priyam DeMel's big blind with his big stack.

Priyam is not short of chips himself though.

I saw him call one of Carl's late position raises to 16k.

The flop came As 4d Jh .

Priyam checked and Carl bet 20k. Priyam called.

Turn was a Jc.

Check Check.

River was a 2s.

15k bet by Priyam, called by Buskirk with.....K7....King high he announced proudly as he called before Priyam showed AT for top pair and collected the pot in his impassive, impenetrable way.

You'd have thought this might have slowed down Buskirk's thievery but the very next round he again raised Priyam's blind to 16k and Priyam again called.

The flop came As Kd 9h and both players checked.

on the turn 8 Priyam bet out 15k and Carl  called.

River 8 and Priyam bet out 30k but Carl folded and Priyam showed him AK.
