Title: Laptop Help Pls!
Post by: YoungHero on October 24, 2007, 08:57:32 AM
hi, i am about to purchase a new laptop and have very limited knowledge on what i require.I play online full time and multi table 4-8 tables and have 3/4 sites running.I also have poker office running and another hand recording programme.,and messenger, skype etc.I will be running an external screen from the laptop also to make poker play easier.I will also use it for a little bit of surfing but not downloading music or films.Any advice on the spec i require would be most helpfull,i have no idea of suitable hard drive , memory size processor speed, processor cache etc.Below are a couple of links to a couple of cheaper ones i have seen but have no idea if these are suitable for my needs. Many thanks in advance.

I am also looking at the moment Hero. It probably is not the best time to look right now. Vista does seem to be a little bit flaky and service pack 2 which should shore up the problems is a little behind schedule. The key to any laptop with Vista is 2gb of RAM and a really good graphics card. There is of course the option to look at Apple but they are bringing out a new version of their software...Leopard....on Thursday. In fact it will launch at the Mac Live Expo on Thursday at 6pm.

If you can wait then it would probably be wise to do so

Do you want 4-8 tables running on your laptop?

If so, the screen will be your main priority.

Realisticaly, any laptop can cope with playing poker. It's 3D gaming, and other intensive stuff that they can't manage.

Thanks Rich, i have an external 24" screen i will connect to it so the screen is not the priority.I just need a laptop that runs fast enough to do the tasks i mentioned.
Thanks hero.

Hi younghero,

It seems that by the sounds of it you are going to have to spend quite a bit on a laptop, not only would you need a powerful processor to run all those programs you are going to also need a powerful gfx card to be able to use a 24'' monitor with good performance, also if you are using an external 24'' monitor battery life will be very short.

I've been looking around and its very easy to find a powerful processor but finding a powerful gfx card isnt easy.

This is the best find I've had:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DELL-XPS-M1330-LAPTOP-2-2GHz-RED-200GB-DVDRW-WHITE-LED_W0QQitemZ290174329608QQihZ019QQcategoryZ177QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

The weakest part of the laptop here is the gfx card, but its still pretty good.

Let me know what you think.

What resolution is the 24" monitor?

You won't need a powerful laptop to run a few poker Apps.

It all depends on the resolution of the screen and what the maximum external display is capable of.

I have a £400 laptop that runs 4 tables, messenger, skype, outlook, 2-3 poker sites, browser with a million tabs open. All no problem. Don't have poker office though.

Poker software, isn't a very intensive task.

Maybe my laptop needs a reformat then :P.

I'm going to hook up my laptop to my 24'' monitor tomorrow and see how it runs.

Well, it was actually a £700 laptop but you can get a similar spec for £400 these days.

A format is alwyas good.

Poker Office and Poker Tracker ARE intensive tasks (at times).  If you're short on memory or hard drive space, they'll cripple your machine.

The other stuff such as the poker clients, broswers, skype, etc. use bugger all in comparison.
