Title: Blondepoker.com Waterford Winter Festival: Final Day
Post by: danafish on November 18, 2007, 02:12:07 PM
Morning all! We're back at the Woodlands, they've just this second resumed play, and we're hopeful of a swift and painless finish - there's been an exit already on the first hand. Superblondeite Jen Mason is on 315k after her last-hand outdraw with Nines v Tens last night, and is looking pretty good. Full player list and starting chip counts, and details of that exit, coming shortly...

So after two exciting, explosive days of poker, the starting field has been whittled down to 20 of the best ready to pick up arms, well chips anyway, and meet each other head on in the bloody, well arena of the felt.

There has been an exciting start to the day, we have already had several allins, so let me get you up to date with what's been happening.

I'll just tell you about the latest elimination first as the well known face of Collette "Smurf" Murphy has just called allin. She was relatively short and facing a raise from Ian Baitson and a reraise from Ian Whittey, she decided to call allin and Baitson passed...

Ian Whittey turned over the dominating Ks Kh to Collette's Kd Qd.

The flop came 9h 5s Td giving Collette hope in the form of a gutshot...

"DIAMOND!" shouted Collette and she was rewarded with the

8d on the turn, giving her a flush draw and further outs...

The river came the Tc though, meaning Collette (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=508) Murphy (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=508) is OUT in 18th place, winning 1,100 EUROS.

There are 2 other earlier eliminations to report on as well which are coming up...

Jay Danter just moved allin and was quickly called by Michael Trimby.

He turned over 2-2 and was glad to be coinflipping versus Trimby's A-K

A flop of A-Q-9 was bad news for him.

The Q on the turn almost sealed it and he picked up his coat and walked away from the table BUT

the 2 on the river was greeted with enthusiastic cheers and bellows from the gathered masses on the rail!

Danter retook his seat overjoyed at his double up and play continues...

Derek (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1037) Thorpe (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1037) has jsut been involved in a big pot with Rob Taylor. The chips went in preflop, although the exact manner how is unknown.

What is known is that once the cards were flipped over, Rob showed A-J, and Derek was overjoyed to see this as he had A-Q...

A flop of 6-7-2-7-8 changed nothing, meaning Derek doubles through courtesy of Rob...

Mem Tam, who started the day off fairly short has had a whirlwind start, doubling up, first off Nicky Powers, his 7-7 flipping successfully versus Nicky's A-T.

He then knocked out Maurice Slattery again showing he is the master of flips as his 4-4 held versus the A-5 of Slattery, meanng Slattery was out in 20th spot for 1,100 EUROS.

Also out in 19th spot was Pat Storan, whose heroic recovery yesterday in going from 7k to 150k was ended abruptly today, although details of his exit hand are scarce, he picks up 1,100 EUROS for his troubles also...

Hello from Bloggerville. Dana and JC are rather surreally reporting whilst the lighting crew "experiments" nearby. The resultant effect resembles Cinderalla Rockefellas, 1987-stylee, from my Youth as we peer through a haze of strobe effects

To my left the final two tables are surrounded by a phalanx of slightly hungover railbirds, Sky have just arived and all I have to say is

GO ON JEN!

the lighting crew "experiments" nearby.

I can, and will, throw up next time they do that. Rod and I have acquired roast dinners now, so that's less of an, um, empty threat than it was about 15 minutes ago...

Incidentally, far be it from me to criticise anything done in the name of blondepoker, but the No-Ipods-Once-You're-In-The-Money rule seems a little harsh. If you've become used to listening to dodgy novelty hits of the Eighties (we shall name no names), then it could really affect your game to have your ipod taken away from you. I hope it doesn't lead to players singing or anything awful...

Full report on the Roast Dinner Please

The gravy was dominating the plate, but met some resistance in the form of the large slab of turkey which stood up to it temporarily.

The mashed potato was just bleeding away and the carrots were all over the place and were soon allin.

Mike (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=670) Lacey (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=670) referred to it as a "dirty roast".

Ultimately once the dust settled the last man standing was a lonely piece of mashed potato, putting up sterling resistance from the insistent attacks of the fork.

Good game turkey roast

Rob Taylor and Thomas Bomber Nolan just played out a big pot.

On a flop of A-J-9 the chips flew in and Rob was ALLIN as bomber had him covered.

When the cards were revealed though, he looked in good shape with A-9 versus Bomber's A-2.

The turn was an Ace, giving Bomber a few split outs, and the river 2 gave Bomber a full house, but Rob's full house was a smidgin better and the 600+k pot was shipped to him , which is likely to be good for the chip lead at this stage.

Jen was also seen bursting into action. Surprisingly it was not on the table though. A panicked Jen had misplaced her rucksack with passport within and was rushing all round the hotel trying to locate it whilst she was blinding away. She soon recovered it and dashed back to the table so she could pass her latest hand...

Just to bring you up to speed on the blinds situation, they rolled the blinds back to the 4k-8k-400 level at the start of the day and we have about 7 minutes left of the 5k-10k-500 level remaining.

Next level will be 6k-12k-1k...

Jay Danter has doubled up - he shoves for not very much and Connie O'Sullivan calls. "Good game," says Danter as O'Sullivan turns over his Qc Qh and he's getting up to leave as the dealer turns over his Ad 8h.

But the board comes out 7d Ac 5s Jd Kh and Danter is shouting something that sounds like "WUUUUAAAAARRRRRRR!!!" the second the Ace hits the felt. He is moving too fast for my camera. Says this lady, "Come on the Ladies,":

...but no further Lady appears, and Danter doubles up to still-not-very-much - maybe 90 or 100k.

Wow some hand jsut played out involving Jen.

After Connie O'Sullivan raised to 35k from middle position, Jen re-popped him on the button to 90k.

After thinking about it for a short while Connie reached for his stack and shoved all 240k of it over the line.

Jen exhaled deeply and was clearly not entirely happy at this turn of events...

She got a count, scrunched her hair up, buried her head in her hands as she thought and thought about it, and EVENTUALLY.....JEN CALLED!

It proved a very brave and also correct call as she could only table 4h 4d BUT Connie had been making a move with Ks Js! Wow.

The flop was ridiculous too, something for both players...coming out 4s 7h 3s giving Jen the set but Connie the flush draw...

The players watched the board like hawks and a black 8 popped out but it was the 8c....everyone was fixated on the crucial river card and it was .....

....THE Qc! meaning Jen's set of 4s took down a huge pot of 500k and meaning Connie was OUT in 15th for €1,500.

Jen's immediate analysis of the hand was "I'm a psycho, they shouldn't let me have chips..." later refined to "He had the kind of hand I thought and I was getting the right price so i called."

I like her initial response best. Well played Jen! I beleive she is 2nd in chips now with Rob Taylor in 1st...

Rob Taylor has just eliminated Tony Baitson, his A-9 holding vs Tony's As 6s on a 5h 3h Ks Jh 8s board...

He was out in 14th for €1,500.

And Jen is quickly back in action again. The busy Mem Tam made a steal with Q-9 but found Jen with a dominating hand in J-J

A flop of T-2-2-A-5 ensued meaning Mem had missed his 3 outs and was banished to the rail by the rampaging Jen in 13th spot for €1,700.

The blinds are now 6k-12k-1k and the question is who can stop Jen?

Mike is already predicting a blonde, green joker heads up in Rob Taylor vs Jen Mason. Some way to go but it's looking an increasingly likely scenario...

just as I write this, Jen just raised preflop and Nicky (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1228) Power (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1228) pushed over the top for 150k with A-T. Once again Jen called quickly, holding J-J AGAIN!

The flop was K-K-9

The turn was the 9 and the river was ace-less in the form of a 3, meaning Jen has taken yet another victim! She now has over a million chips, chip leader with Rob Taylor in 2nd with about 770k...

GO JEN!

Jay Danter has just fallen to Michael Trimby.

I wasn't there on his elimination as my fingers were still smoking from typing up all the Jen action occurring, but his A-J fell somewhat unluckily to Michael Trimby's 6-7 on a 6-9-8-8-4, meaning Jay Danter is OUT in 11th spot for €1,700...

Snoopy's a legend. Updating the main event here WHILST also playing it, AND updating the Blackpool GUKPT and he still finds time to play the €150 event today. The dog has stacks of energy. He's the canine equivalent of Clarke Kent.

Here is how he has decided to dress today...

We have our first exit!

Anthony Lynch and Bomber Nolan were involved in the hand.

I joined the table on the flop.

There were a lot of chips in the pot on the flop which was

Kd Ad Jh

on the 5d turn, Anthony bet about 90k and Bomber set Lynch allin for 100k more or so.

Lynch's hands were trembling but he called with his black Kings.

Sadly for him Bomber's 6d 9d - no joke! - had got there on the turn to complete his flush, and Lynch's set of Kings needed to fill up.

A random 7h on the river changed nothing meaning Nolan picks up the large pot and....

Anthony Lynch is OUT in 10th place, winning €2,200

Well played Anthony

Ian Whittey has just played a big pot against Ken Corkery.

Ian, who was relatively short pushed preflop, and Ken who was even shorter, called for all his chips.

Everyone else scampered out of the way, and the players put the cards on their backs...

Ian showed Q-Q and Ken was upset to find himself dominated with J-J...

A board ensued which consisted of an ace followed by a series of inconsequential rags, meaning Ian close to doubled through whilst...

Ken Corkery is OUT, eliminated in 9th for €3,000.

[I felt terrible taking this photo of Mr Corkery walking off when he obviously, understandably, REALLY didn't want to have his photo taken, but I took it anyway, so here it is in all its blurriness - Dana]

And Mr Whitty looking absolutely overjoyed about his new larger stack:

I hear the sounds of a big hand being played out so battle my way through this lot of degenerates...

The aggressive Thomas Nolan had raised on the button to roughly 45k with the blinds on 6k 12k and Michael Trimby called from the big blind.

Michael bet out for 100k on the Qs 3d 5d flop which caused Bomber to tank for a while...

Eventually however he passed...

Whilst I was there, I thought I should take a picture of Ian Whittey's card protector, which is the highly original banana with a band-aid round it...

Apparently he has had the same one since the start of the tournament, attested to by the blackened edges of the aforementioned piece of fruit. He will be keeping the same banana till the end of the tournament so he hopefully for him and his supporters it will look like one of these by the end...

Jen just now missed an opportunity to knock out crazy man Bomber Nolan. They find themselves about to see a flop, and Bomber puts on his shades. Says he to Jen: "You're in trouble now, eh?"

Flop - 4s 8h Kc and Nolan moves all in. Curiously he removes his shades to do so, and appears to be giggling.

Jen goes into the tank which seems (see below) to be located in her armpit. She passes Ks face up. Bomber shows 4-6 offsuit.

Rob Taylor just raised to 40k from the hijack and was met by a reraise allin from the relatively quiet so far Jimmy Kiernan...

After requesting a count it was 135k more to Rob, but he didn't take too long to pass and Jimmy showed Ad Kd...

The blinds are 8k 15k with a 1k ante at the moment.

Average stack is 515k, Jen still has over a million and for the moment at least play remains quite cagey...It's been a while since we saw a big hand play out, although to be fair the players were on the dinner break for a while which partially explains that.

Ian "Banana-plaster" Whittey hasn't been monkeying around, Jen "The chip monster" Mason has been in quiet consolidation mood. Even the unpredictable Thomas Nolan hasn't made a bizarre overshove for a while...

We are on the edge of our seats waiting expectantly for the fireworks to kick off...

Rob Taylor jsut played out a big pot with Thomas Nolan...

Michael Trimby encouraged Bomber to raise his BB on the button but Nolan ended up just calling...

Rob completed from the small blind...

On the flop of 5c 6c Jd Rob and Michael checked and Thomas bet 35k...

Rob called...

The turn 7c elicited a bet of 60k from Rob and Bomber called him instantly.

The river was the As.

Rob checked and eyed Nolan carefully , who moments later announced "ALLIN" setting the now shortish Rob in for his last 180k or so...

The pot was about 240k and Rob looked uncomfortable "Why can't I have the nut flush!" he asked despairingly before eventually passing...

Bomber turned over 6-4 (not for the first time!) for a pair of 6s...and Rob looked a tad miffed as he no doubt had this beat. Good bluff!

Bomber limps. Trimby limps. Whitty limps. Derek Thorpe, however, shoves for 124k.

Jen folds her big blind. Bomber Nolan dwells for long enough for a really decent crowd to develop and he counts out  ALL his chips - but then folds. Michael Trimby calls though.

Derek Thorpe - Ad 5s

Michael Trimby - 6d 6h

Board -  Aspades 2d 2h 3h Kc

And Derek doubles up. Doesn't he look happy?

We have just had another big pot between Rob Taylor and Bomber Nolan...

I joined the hand on the river of a K-5-T-7-2 flop.

Nolan checked the river and Rob bet out but was check-raised allin. Now pretty short, and having been pushed around by Nolan all day, he made the call, only to find Nolan with a hand for once, holding T-2 for a rivered 2 pair...

Sadly I couldn't see Rob's hand but Nolan's Brunson-esque 2 pair was good, meaning...

Rob Taylor is OUT, eliminated in 8th position, winning €4,500

Here he is completing his exit interview with the lovely Rhowena...

Michael Trimby was just allin!

Seeing a flop in a raised pot of Aspades Jd Qs, he got all his chips into the middle and was called by Bomber!

Bomber showed 7s 4s for the flush draw whilst Michael held Ahrt Jh for 2 pair.

Bomber showed he IS human after all and can miss though as a 6h and river Ad to fill up Michael up gave him a much needed double up and stopped the almost incessant flow of chips to Bomber.

"That's how you play a short stack folks!" yelled Michael in glee as he stacked his newly won assortment of chips...

Jimmy showed Ahrt Qs, and bomber showed the almost, but not quite identical, Aspades Qc.

Derek Thorpe just moved allin and was looked up by Ian Whittey.

He tabled As 6s and looked in bad shape against Ian's Ac Ks.

However he hit his 3 outer on a 2-6-7-8-3 flop and doubled through, not for the first time, with a dominated hand.

He simply refuses to die!

Snoopy (sadly OUT of the €150 - that's €15 I'm not going to see again :( ) called me over to the tv table. "I think there's something going on. There's lots of red and purple chips in the middle. Is that bad?"

Jimmy Kiernan was all in utg-but-one and limper Bomber Nolan was considering what to do. Eventually, in a show of uncharacteristic restraint, from what we've seen of his play today, he folds an Ace face up. Kiernan also shows an Ace. I think Bomber claimed a Queen with it - and Kiernan shows the King.

Laughs Rob Taylor, next to me by the rail - "He only plays A-K. Every time I was in a hand with him he had A-K. It's so annoying."

Just to keep you up to speed there are 2 minutes left of the 10k 20k 2k level before we move to 15k -30k-3k...

An amazing hand just played out...

After Derek (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1037) Thorpe (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1037) raised preflop he was called by both Bomber and Ian Whittey...

The flop came 2h 4h 5c and first to act Bomber moved allin!

Ian sighed, and eventually passed and Derek called instantly.

Derek showed Kh Kc, Nolan 5s 6c for top pair and a gutshot...

The turn was a sick 3h, giving Nolan the straight and Derek the flush draw...

Amazingly though the river came the 6d meaning there was a straight on the board, which both players were playing!

Bomber reached over to shake Derek's hand and Derek started preparing to leave the table, feeling terrible his Kings were cracked before it was pointed out to him "You're still in you know!"

He sat down as one of the most relieved men ever to have not won a pot with KK v 56

HOWEVER, the hand played out differently...

Jen had RAISED to 60k from UTG+1 and Michael reraised to 200k.

Michael is definitely one of the better players at the table and Jen realising this, felt strongly he may be on a re-steal, and this explains why she pushed so many chips in pre, as she felt he had a wide range there...

Not such a bad play as it appeared from my inept reporting then!

Jen promised me at the break that she was going to take it easy with her new, smaller, 550k stack, but that was apparently a lie - Derek Thorne raised and she re-raised herself all in, stealing the pot off of him. I suppose it's possible that she had an actual hand (she also said "Tens or higher and I'm shoving"). Possible.

An all-in and call between Derek Thorpe and Bomber Nolan (not sure who shoved, I'm afraid). Either way they were on their backs preflop:

Bomber - Qd Kd

Derek - Ac Ks

Board -  Aspades 2s Ad 4c 2h

And Derek doubles up. "We're going to be here all night," mutters Neill Kelly. I hope not - the restaurant's stopped serving food, the bar's out of sandwiches, the hotel won't let us order pizza and we're all starving. Aside from anything else, we've all got to be on a flight home at 7am...

No miracle outdraw on the Qd 7h Ac 4s 9c board, and both Whitty and we are here for the foreseeable.

Nolan showed A-6 for top pair and unfortunately I was unable to see Derek's hand...I'll try and clear that up in a bit....But suffice to say Nolan's turned ace was good, and the 2d river changed nothing, meaning...

Derek (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1037) Thorpe (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1037) is OUT, eliminated in 7th spot, winning €6,000

Jen just moved ALLIN and was called by Michael Trimby...
I'm not 100% sure how the chips went in preflop....we''ll find that out in a bit...

BUT Jen held K-Q, dominating Michael's K-J.

The flop came J (NOOOOOO!) 5 - 6..

"Queen Queen Queen"...yelled Jen's suporters...

TURN: 9

"QUEEN TEN QUEEN TEN QUEEN TEN"....we shouted in unison.

RIVER: 9...

Meaning Michael's K-J outdrew Jen's K-Q for a large, crucial, tournament ending hand, Soooooo

Jen Mason is OUT, eliminated in 5th position, winning €8,500.

Great performance from the young lady who will be giving us her exit chat shortly.

of the 80k left between the 4 of them, they were all guaranteed 9,500. Take that out 4 times and we have over 40k left to chop up based on chip counts. He'd need less than 200k for it to be fair.

In general - tournament deals are terribly devised. Knowing what is a good and bad deal is something most players suck at.

Title: Re: Blondepoker.com Waterford Winter Festival: Final Day
Post by: JungleCat03 on November 19, 2007, 12:28:12 AM
4 handed, Bomber lost his chips to Michael Trimby...not Kiernan as i foolishly claimed before lol...but he lost them even quicker than he knocks back pints of guiness so I missed exactly how...

BUT this meant

Thomas Nolan is OUT in 4th position, winning €24,500[/
b] as per the deal the four thrashed out.

Well played you drunken maniac!

3 handed Whittey moved in with 8-9 and was called by Trimby with T-3.

The board brought no surprises, meaning...

Ian Whittey is OUT, eliminated in 3rd position, winning €15,000, as per their deal.

Heads up, the remaining players Michael Trimby and James Kenny agreed to split the €2,000 they were playing for, with Michael taking the trophy, meaning...

James Kenny is OUT, eliminated in 2nd place, winning €11,500 + €1,000
as per the deal.

AND

MICHAEL TRIMBY is the WINNER of this year's Waterford MAIN EVENT, winning €29,500 + €1,000 as per the deal PLUS the marvellous WATERFORD CRYSTAL TROPHY!

Well played all the players and thank you to the organisers for a superbly run event. It's been great fun!

A final few photos to follow...

Hello everyone!  Thanks for the support - I haven't been online all weekend due to lack of ethernet cable in my hotel, but Dana has been relaying messages with excellent efficiency.

A couple of notes - I received a blessing in the form of a button shove with Nines which ran into a big blind Tens but sucked out on Day Two which set me up with decent chips (I would otherwise have had around 90k instead of 300) for which I am grateful to the same poker gods who three outed me in 5th on the final.  That hand, Trimby raised on the button to around 180k, and I shoved with QK for c. 400k - that's how it went.  I had previously misread him twice (for a resteal when he had Kings, and then for a genuine hand when he pushed me off AJ preflop) but had decided to reverse my impression of him and finally got it right - just in time to get busted.  He deserves his top place finish and congrats to all who finalled.

A special thankyou to the three guys who may or may not have been inebriated sitting at the rail shouting Go Jen - that was totally unexpected and therefore awesome.

There's no way in hell I would have done a deal, least of all that deal, but well done to them nonetheless...

Cheers little bro and mum...er...changed my flight so I am leaving at 7am from Waterford and will be asleep for the next 20 hours.  Great structured tourney and I would play this every week if I could.

4th placed chips was extremely short, but 3rd had 500,000 chips  and blinds at 20/40k

Interesting deal to say the least

Thanks to Dana and Rod for a wonderful update today

And finally, just to complete the guiness watch...

Once Bomber left the table, we were left with this sad spectacle of the once crowded-with-guiness sidetable, now abandoned. While looking at this imagine the Hovis music playing gently in the background...

Yay Waterford!

AndrewT here.

M3Boy gets lucky. Looks at one card, sees an Ace and shoved. Called in two places by AK. Looks at his other card to find a 3. A 3 hits on the river (with the 3 of clubs being no good as it would give one of the AKs a flush). He's just doubled up again in a blinds battle with AJ v A7 - he's in great shape now.

My situation is less good - I'm shortstacked on 50ishK after having to pass a blind steal.

Dont forget to mention that is was a pot for C/L!!

But I cannot complain, I lost a 70k pot just before we broke to 2 tables, leaving me with 7 xBB and somehow I managed to limp onto the final table with 5xBB

Had the A3 coo, also had a guy shove for 70k in the c/o and I find AA on the button.

Also managed to break into the 100 in the main event, followed that up with a 24th place in the €250

Full report to follow.
