Title: Bluesq.com GUKPT Grand Final: Final Table
Post by: NoflopsHomer on December 02, 2007, 01:20:43 PM
:hello: I'm feeling a bit groggy today, think I've caught something from permaflu-sufferers Jen and Dana. But no matter, Maria and I are here for the final table which starts from 2pm. Chip counts are below with seating plan and photos of all the finalists to come soon.

Final Counts (the 100's have been coloured up):

Mark Friedman -- 912,000
Sami Yusef -- 545,000
Simon Zach -- 346,000
Ben Vinson -- 293,000
Michael Ellis -- 245,000
Paul Moss -- 202,000
Dave Barnes -- 196,000
Carlos Barrera -- 137,000 (Carlos doesn't use the name Walker much at all apparently)
Owen Lock -- 109,000

So who is going to win guys? Will Friedman hold onto his huge chip lead? Can Ben Vinson go better than he did in Blackpool? Could Simon Zach or Paul Moss take it down? Who are the dark horses?

Ello Ello everyone, I'm really looking forward to this one.  So gutted to not see Stuart Fox on the final table though, he was so close and he can't do much better than believing he is making the right move at any given time. I think this American Friedman has outfoxed a lot of people in this Grand Final!

Talking to Paul Moss (Fatmarra online) last night at the bar was interesting, It's safe to say he is looking forward to this final also and everyone watch out for him too, an absolute loose cannon with awesome game.  Anyone used to playing on the old tribeca sites will know him for sure, will have been knocked by him or gifted some chips..  Paul says he would love to win the money of course but isn't bothered either way and is "gonna damn good laugh trying!"

Sami limps utg, Carlos makes up the small blind and Paul Moss checks.

Js 9s Kh

Checked around.

9h

Checked to Sami who bets 36k and takes it down.

Next hand, Mark Friedman raises to 45k and no-one wants to tangle with the chip leader.

Mark limps calls a Ben Vinson raise from the big blind but folds on the flop to the continuation bet. Ben Vinson, incidentally needs to win this tournament to win the player of the year ahead of Dave Smith.

Dave Barnes raises to 34k, Mark Friedman calls from the small blind. Simon calls from the big blind. The pot is already big.

Jc Qd Qh

Looks like an action board, but everyone checks. Bah.

3c

All three check again.

Jd

"First bet takes it," say Meds. But they all check. "I have an Ace," says Dave hopefully. Mark shows Kd Jh and Simon passes, missed a river bet there?

Friedman raises it up to 45k from mid position, Simon (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=402) Zach (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=402) next to him reraises to 120,000 total, Friedman INSTA calls.  "Lets see them flop cards!" announces the announcer.

2h  Ahrt 8c  check check

3c Friedman bets out 60,000, a small dwell later and Zach passes.  This pushes Friedman over the million mark in chips with close to 3 million in play he is slightly dominating.

Yeah, Mark getting away there with betting just a quarter of the pot to take it down.

Mark limps in for 12k. Passed around to Owen Lock who makes up the small blind, and Dave Barnes checks.

7d 5s 7c

Dave Barnes checks out of turn and Owen bets 32k, Dave passes. Mark, who does limp a lot with a wide variety of hands, (as Dave Colclough found to his cost last night) decides to fold this time.

Ben Vinson makes it 38k, Dave Barnes dwells for an absolute age but folds. Ben shows A-Q.

1. £197,600
2. £106,900
3. £71,300
4. £53,500
5. £41,600
6. £32,700
7. £23,800
8. £17,800
9. £14,800
10. £8,900 -- John Kabbaj
11. £5,900 -- Ross Boatman
12. £4,800 -- Dave Colclough
13. £4,800 -- Paul Smallwood
14. £4,800 -- Ken Wong
15. £4,800 -- Keith Hawkins
16. Entry to Grand Final Next Year -- Jim Moult

Ben raises to 42k, Mark Friedman calls from the small blind.

7h 8h Tc

Check check.

2c

Check from Mark again, Ben debates about throwing out a few of the golden 5k chips, but checks.

8d

Mark now bets out 50k. Ben calls but Mark shows 9-6 for a flopped straight. A couple of the other players ask Ben what he had, "No pair," came the nonchalant reply, "I thought he had a big hand or nothing."

Blinds encounter now, Zach made it 20,000 more from the small blind.  Carlos Barrera just made the call in the bb.  Flop is:

3c 7h 7s

Simon goes all in and Carlos makes the quick call not surprisingly with  Ad Aspades.  Simon turned over  Ahrt Kh, the last two cards were rubbish for Simon and Carlos doubles up to around 150,000.  This leaves Simon (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=402) Zach (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=402) horribly short with 37,000.

Title: Re: Bluesq.com GUKPT Grand Final: Final Table

Dave Barnes raises to 34k, Michael Ellis asks how much he has behind,

"Errr, twenty...forty, seventy-four...no seventy-two."

Ellis passes. Passed to Paul Moss who exclaims, "Wow."

He then folds deuce-three offsuit face-up.

Mark calls agian, this time from the cut-off. A severely short-stacked Simon Zach with just 35k passes from the button. Paul Moss calls from the small blind, and Sami Yusuf says, "Fire away."

Kc Jc 4c

Checked to Mark who bets 32k and the two blinds offer little resistance.

Title: Re: Bluesq.com GUKPT Grand Final: Final Table
Post by: NoflopsHomer on December 02, 2007, 04:02:50 PM
Dave Barnes limps, Sami Yusuf limps in from the button, (It seems a lot of players are following Mark Friedman's example and open limping - something I personally hate). Ben calls from the small blind and Owen Lock checks his option.

4s Kd 7c

Checked around.

3c

Ben takes a deep breath and throws out 30k. Owen passes. Dave says in his gruff gravely voice, "You got a three?" (Which I don't think anyone at the table believes Ben would bet with on its' own). Dave mucks and Sami folds also.

We're just having a short break before the next level starts.

Mark raises to 55k and it's passed to Ben (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=47) Vinson (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=47) on the button who thinks whilst looking like he's eating his own fingers, he gets up to the first knuckle before deciding not risk a confrontation against the American with a third of the chips in play. The blinds fold too.

Next hand, Simon moves all-in for his last 31k. Dave (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=91) Barnes (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=91) says, "I owe you one, I'll give you a spin." He calls from the small blind. Michael Ellis calls from the big blind.

4s 9d Kh

Dave moves all-in, Michael Ellis now asks for a count, it's 69k. Michael Ellis calls.

Ks Jh for Dave (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=91) Barnes (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=91)

Kc 5h for Michael Ellis

Jd 8s for Simon (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=402) Zach (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=402).

Turn:

Js

Sealing Zach's fate and Barnes double-up

River:

Aspades

Simon (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=402) Zach (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=402) is OUT in 9th place winning £14,800

I'm not sure which I dislike more in how this hand played out, Dave (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=91) Barnes (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=91) calling off 1/3 of his stack preflop or Ellis calling on the flop when there was going to be no way he was ahead.

Dave Barnes limps on the button, Michael Ellis makes up the small blind and Mark Friedman checks.

5s 9s 2c

Ellis and Barnes checks, Dave bets out, and Ellis check/raises all-in for 96k. As Friedman gets out the way, Barnes tries to get Ellis to talk but gets very little response. Eventually Barnes makes the call.

Barnes:

6s 6h

Ellis:

Ks 4s

Turn:

River:

3s

Barnes is punished for not raising preflop and letting Ellis into the pot. Barnes is on 126k and Ellis back up to 257k.

Paul Moss with just over 100k moved all in blind (although he never said until after he was called)  and was called by Owen Lock, on their backs and

Paul Moss   Jh Qd
Owen Lock   Aspades Th  the board came out:

 8d Ks 5d 8s Kd

No help for Moss out valiantly in 8th place after coming into day 2 with only 20,000 chips.

Paul Moss is OUT in 8th place winning £17,800

Ben Vinson on the button goes for some chips to the cries of "No...Really?" from big blind Dave Barnes.

Ben makes it 56k, takes the blinds down and continues to quietly build his stack.

Sami Yusuf makes it 48k to play. Michael Ellis, who is a bit of a 'Laakalike' mucks his 4-2o in digust.

Ben again, raises to 51k, and for once, Mark Friedman gives up his big blind with little fight.

I wish this could be more interesting, but the table seems very quiet right now especially after the exit of Paul Moss. Everyone is extremely serious about the money they're now playing for, but at the same time, the play has admittedly been less than stellar.

I suppose all I can do in the meantime is post this picture for the guests. :)

Good call though.

If he'd raised preflop he wouldn't have been in that position! He also knows if he's not already drawing to just 2 outs and has read Ellis correctly, he's facing at least 12, sometimes even 15 outs.

Edit (I'm sorry, I'm feeling ill and grumpy - and adamant)

In danger of sounding like a drone (not my fault) blame Mark Friedman.

Ben Vinson raises to 51k and Friedman reraises to 148,000, Ben passes.  This american is steam rolling most hands he is involved in.

Seat 1   Mark Friedman   1,319,000
Seat 2   Simon Zach   9th   £14,800
Seat 3   Carlos Barrera   210,000
Seat 4   Paul Moss   8th   £17,800
Seat 5   Sami Yusef   596,000
Seat 6   Ben Vinson   348,000
Seat 7   Owen Lock   234,000
Seat 8   Dave Barnes   79,000

The board reads: Ad Aspades 6d

In a hand between Owen Lock in the small blind and Dave Barnes in the big blind. Dave Barnes moves all-in out of turn. Owen thinks, then calls anyway

Dave Barnes shows Td 4d, Owen Lock has Ts 6s

Dave raises to 60k from the button, and Mark Friedman gestured all-in from the big blind. And just as we're all thinking Dave can't pass having put 1/3 of his chips in the pot, he does fold.

"What?" cries the pressroom in unison.

Mark Friedman limps, Ben makes it up from the sb & Owen checks.  3 way pot see:

Very next hand, Friedman looking a bit bored - makes it 60k, David Barnes dwells and passes.....

Sami Yusuf raises to 65k and takes the blinds. Can we overstate how uninspiring this final is?

But hark! Carlos Barrera moves all-in and our hopes briefly are raised for a second, but are subsequently dashed by an incredibly fast sequence of passes that would rival the 1970's Brazilian football team.

Mark Friedman looks to be as bored as us, and has decided to up the aggression, the rest of the table haven't seemingly woken up yet, as he makes it 70k again, this time though Carlos is alert enough to realise that perhaps Mark doesn't always have a hand and moves all-in. As soon as Mark is told it's another 168k to call, he insta-mucks.

Mark still has 1.45 million chips though. A country mile (better than your stinky city miles) ahead of the rest with Sami Yusuf unmoved still in 2nd with around 530k.

In real time it was a bit longer than 2 mins and it was just the blinds and one raise and a pass to an all in.

I'm upset too, the two players I wanted to win or get close have gone out 9th & 8th.... Pah!  Thats why I don't openly root for people.        OR PUNT!

Owen Lock made it 75,000 and Sami Yusef moved all in, Owen called instantly.  Turn them over boys and we see:

Sami   Kc Ks
Owen  Qh Qd

It came   8d Kd 7d  Qc Jh

Which means Owen Lock is OUT in 7th place winning £23,800.

Jon Raab is cross because the blinds are 15k/30k with a 2k ante but they've skipped (accidentally or deliberately) the 12k/24k/2k level which Jon thinks needs to be there because the jump is otherwise too big. Doesn't look like we'll get it now though.

Incidentally, the reason why we're still on the 15k/30k level is that they decided to play it a second time after missing out the 12k/24k level, also though, once they were down to 4 players, all levels are only 45 minutes long from now on.

After each hand, the announcer tries to get the crowd to clap for the players as they take a down a pot.

Stephen Bartley observes, "Surely the players should be clapping the crowd?"

The limping continues and 3 way flop again - They check this board

2c  Tc 9h then on the  Jc turn Mark Friedman goes all in for 400,000.  The players both pass.

Michael makes it 120k total. Mark passes, but Sami makes the call.

5c 4s Qc

Check, check. Utterly predictable.

Jh

Check, Mike Ellis bets 200k. Sami thinks, but we already know he's going to pass as he always seems fearful he's going to lose. And he does.

Mike is now the big chip leader on account that's he's making the least mistakes.

He gets a walk in the big blind,

Tournament Announcer, "When the cards are bad, the cards are bad."

A walkathon now with Mike Ellis now getting most of the pots. I don't think he's lost one in the last 40 minutes and has almost 2 million in chips.

The biggest problem is that ALL the players are just content to showdown hands and hope they are ahead, there's very little stealing and all three are playing scared and refusing to commit pots. A seasoned player coming in with a decent/average stack would I think, have little trouble gradually stealing his way up as the other players, whilst they'll defend their blinds, they don't seem to be prepared to bet or indeed call with nothing post-flop. In many ways, this makes the final disappointing, and we're left wondering what would've have happened if John Kabbaj, Dave Colclough, Ross Boatman or Stuart Fox had made the final instead of some of these players.

We're now on a 10 minute break. Chili has gone off to get some photos or maybe to kill herself, I'm reckoning it's a coinflip.

I don't think it's fair to be too critical of these guys.

None of them have ever played for such a big title or for such a huge amount of money.. it's little wonder they are playing a tad timidly.

Cut them a little bit of slack.

With the buy-in starting at £3,000, this should weedle out all but the best players, and hopefully set us up with a high class field and some top quality play.

This was the best value big tournament I've played for many years.

There were countless weak and novice players.

I saw more "christmas presents" given at my tables than I will see on December 25th.

I am at a loss to explain why the field was so weak.. maybe St Kitts has something to do with it.. but all I know I am still kicking myself for not making the final :(

After Sami Yusuf and Mike Ellis take it turns to move in gradually grinding down Mark Friedman's stack to virtually nothing, finally though, he calls for his chips after Sami moves all-in.

Mark:

Jd Ts

Sami Yusuf:

Ks 9h

Board:

6d 5h 5d 3d 3c

Mark Friedman is OUT in 3rd winning £71,300

We probably have been very critical, but the sheer number of pots since they went 3-handed where neither player made a single bet at any point (I've never seen so many pots won at showdown by Queen-high and Jack-high), and the number of walks handed around around meant that updating it becomes incredibly difficult as constant posts of hands where one player limps and another checks, and hence they then check the flop, turn and river to showdown would most likely bore you all to death.

But apologies if you think we've been unduly harsh.

think the problem might be the amount of money they are playing for 130k difference between 1st and 3rd is allot of money to them where the seasoned pro like you used as an example earlier it is not and they are free to play there game and wot a game they all have this is why they would have been better doing a deal 3 out and then they might have show us how they all could play poker

 4d 7h Qc  Mike (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=287) Ellis (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=287) bet out 100k

Sami Yusif reraises to 400k total with 800k behind.

Ellis goes ALL IN.

Sami takes a massive intake of breath and says "Cmon then, ALL IN - Good Luck!"

Sami   Qd Ts
Ellis   5d 6s

Turn -  Jc
River -  5h

Sami's Q is good to win the pot and the lead.

Sami Yusuf - 2,500,000
Mike (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=287) Ellis (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=287) - 490,000

Since Mike Ellis was crippled he's turned into an uberpushbot, moving in multiple times frustrating Sami, who seems to have retreated into his shell a little since getting a 5-1 chip lead. Ellis isn't lying down though, he's gradually making a little back, but is it too little too late?

Limped pot (there's not really any other kind)

Jh 9s Ts

Ellis checks, Sami moves in and Ellis insta-calls. We don't see the cards, but hear that Ellis has J-6 and Sami is holding Q-5

The turn and river brick out for Sami, coming 2d Ahrt

Ellis is chipleader again with 1.6 million to Sami's 1.3 million.
