Title: "To Blog or Not To Blog" that is the question
Post by: 77dave on December 03, 2007, 08:53:40 PM
As some of you out there know im selling up a moving to vegas at the start of the New Year.

So im thinking of starting a blog/diary something to look back at as i start my new life in the city of sin.

The thing is i dont want to be one of these bloggers that just posts an entry when they have a result and things are going well.

So what are peoples opinions on blogs and is it something that i would continue for the future.

personally I would love to hear the highs and the lows. Maybe a regular blog -- whats good, what you're missing, was I right etc etc etc

I like blogs that are slightly "different"..ie not just how hands play out and to chirp..but the downsides, the experiences and telling it how it is eg Alex Martin's sometimes painful but always honest

You've got a major life change ahead, exciting and probably at times a bit daunting, and I for one would be interested in reading how it goes for you, as well of course as a way of keeping in touch

Pretend we're not there and you're writing a diary of genuine thoughts and feelings just for yourself (through all the highs and lows) and you'll have an audience.

Seriously tho - as well as poker it's great to hear about those slices of life away from the tables... the weirdos - the oddballs - the great meals etc.  Kinda Edwin Hopper in words blog.

Translated = let me know where you are so I can come and stay for free.

I would love to read a blog about your experiences Jim. You will be missed at Luton and it would be great to keep in touch with what you're doing do when we come and stay see you you don't have to go through it again and again and again.

I have found writing a blog very cathartic, and it helps me keep things in perspective it makes me realise what an idiot I have been.

Please do it Jim - I for one would live to read it.

I hardly read blogs..there are too many people who think someone gives a crap about their bad beat stories that I've given up on reading most poker related blogs.

If you are only going to post about how the drunken tourist made a stupid play and took all your money by hitting a one-outer on the river than I would say noone will give a crap about your blog. If you give an honest account on live in Vegas and the poker scene and it's ups and downs it could be well worth a read and I would surely give it a whack. Don't just write about poker hands also write about the atmosphere (which Snoopy for instance does very well) of the places you play..and write, like I said, about Vegas and what it's like to live there as a poker player.

Best of luck to you..I'm sure you'll do well.

2/5,No Limit No Looky.blogspot.com ?

It's your blog (or it would be) so write what you want to.

If you want some topics of interest to me:

  • Las Vegas off-strip.  Where's good to eat, where's best to avoid, non-poker things to do.  I have rarely ventured out of tourist areas.
  • Poker rooms offering exceptional value.  Overlays, promos, fishiest players and why they are there.  Why you are choosing to play in a certain place at a certain time in preference to anywhere else.
  • Sick puppy action.
  • Any decent repartee at the table
  • Any observations about your own style of play in key hands.  It is always interesting for me to see how others arrive at a decision, particularly the same decision for a different reason,  and particularly those with differing styles from myself.

Best of luck out there.

Jim

Its your blog - write what you want.

Blogs make great reading - and by that I mean your own. I find it a good way to improve your own Game.

Whatever you write, I am sure many (including me) will read.

Best of Luck.

I would find it interesting to get more of a feel on the way the americans value their hands. I have always found that they are looser but I would love to really get into their minds a bit more - give us examples of their play etc.

Ok so the blog is set up    well to a degree anyway

Gonna take me a while to get my head around the first entry but hopefully it will flow from there.

Then alll i need is to sort out the links to other sites etc

from the responses i have recieved i have fully taken on board that you guys wanna hear about the lifestyle of living in vegas as much as the poker itself. I do like to tell bad beat stories but only if there is a way of learning how to play the hand better in the future.

For riverdaves benefit i might try to add a counter to the blog that records the number of days people crash at my house.

Also i guess i can have a little section for Tikay on the trains and buses of Las Vegas   so watch this space

The more feedback I get the easier it is also.

Strangly though there isnt actually that much poker at all in it. Im sure that will come with time.

its quite entertaining so far, please dont do what 99% of poker bloggers do and fill it with bad beat stories and other crap like that, make it more "personal" and describe the process of moving to vegas, how you are adapting to the new culture, the process you have to go through to do this, and other stuff like that, and it will almost certainly be a huge hit.

filled in a form on line and barclaycard sent it through the post. Is that how it always happens?

A smart man would say, "Thank you, Dealer" to completely direct the attention away from themselves and onto an innocent party.

I am always amused when that comment is made, and it's usually just before something clicks in my head.

Another great read, thanks Jim. Keep it coming please, poker & non-poker.

I'm particularly interested in your Cat, & the plans to get it across to Vegas. The "4 hour stopover" idea sounds bad to me. A picture would be nice, too, either here, or on your Blog.

Just read it Jim, terrific stuff, I'm almost jealous. Correction - I AM jealous! I'd love to try it, though I'd miss the British countryside & wildife so much, & a few special friends, & I'm not a fan of Vegas as a Town. But jeez, it does sound tempting!

Title: Re: "To Blog or Not To Blog" that is the question

Cat is all sorted

she is flying continental   i know your not a fan of this route but i got told of how she is looked after during her stopover. she gets cleaned fed watered and exercised, i know it will be a hard 24 hrs for her but hopefully worth it for all of us longterm

I know what you mean about Vegas as a city but wait till i get you away from the strip where i live in Summerlin is really nice and you will love the  mountains near our house. Can you believe there is a ski resort 45 min from our house. There is plenty of good wildlife around as well. you will need a whole new book to look the birds up in

im not even going to mention the venetian festival to you

reading your diary is helping me write this   from time to time i ask how would Tom describe this.

I just find that no1 wants to post the first comment on the blog   so once one person posts it can snowball.  plus tikay has lost his password

im getting a counter added to i can see just how many people are visiting the blog

72 hrs till zero

I've made 9,000 attempts to Comment on there Jim, but I just can't "recover" my "blog" Password, & all attempts to creatre a new one are met with "this e-address already has a Password". So for now, I can only comment on blonde. But I take your point - feedback seems to make it all much more worthwhile, & no feedback is often taken to mean the opposite.

Now, have you fed the Cat, & told it of it's impending "surprise" trip?

Facinating read Jim, glad the cat's ok. Looking forward to hearing about day to day Vegas living.

PS- Is it expensive to fly a cat out?

Title: Re: "To Blog or Not To Blog" that is the question
Post by: 77dave on February 16, 2008, 06:22:36 PM
Have taken lots of pictures of her in her new home. You are only supposed to let your cat out of the house after 3 weeks when you move. We let her out into the back garden after less than 48 hrs. We are walled in so she can come in and out of the patio as she pleases.

To fly her out cost 638 pounds  abouts 200 pounds in vet charges and then $25 customs charge in Vegas.  All money well spent in my book.

Hi Jim, dont think we ever met , which seems a pity as i visit Vegas 3-4 times a year. I am really interested in how you can move to the USA to live as my understanding is there are all kinds of visa/permit issues. My sister lives in Florida and has to re-apply every 5 years or so. Do you have any American relatives ? Love the blog and good luck in your new life in Vegas

As people know getting visas for America isnt the easiest thing in the world to do. Imblagging it a bit as i go. My whole family moved out her 10 yrs ago and they just renewed there greencards. My brother is in the US airforce and is a citizen. He is applying for us to come over to stay. My dad is signing as a dependant for us so it should be ok just a matter of time. they recently changed there policy on green cards so things should speed up in the future. fingers crossed anyway

Thanks for reply, Jimso has the green card system made it easier for Brits to retire over there. Last time I enquired the requirement was to invest at least a million dollars in a business. Caused me to look a Vancouver Island for me and my family , which is fabulous part of world btw.

i have always found it easier to win in vegas than in uk casinos

the key for me is not to do anything fancy just make good decisions and let them hang themselves

i heard a good line yesterday at the table

" dont try any of that table talk with me im an internet player so it wont work"

Love the blog mate and admire ya move. We all do blogs for our own reasons but like others have said, will be really interesting to look back say in 12 month and go over the up n downs. Keep it real, honest and varied but mainly put down what YOU want to say not what you think others may want to read.
Id like to hear about some of the characters you will come across there and also the pros n cons of living in a place like Vegas from an Englishmans point of view.
Ive linked you to ours http://teamdobbs.blogspot.com/ and hope you dont mind, link ours if ya want. If you want it removed then just leave me a comment. Gl & enjoy. If all else fails then get some scantily clad girls on, they always work like Gemma Atkinson mmmm

Something im being careful of tracey and a good point.   at home id play all night and sleep all day so  over here its much better way around. i have only played 4 times now and they have mainly been 3/4 hour stints.  so she is happy to get rid of me for a few hours but we are doing much more together in the other times

Teach her how to play!  (If she can't already)

I'm sure after 2 lessons she could more than hold her own in the low limit games out there.  Then you can both play all night and sleep all day :)

I was sleeping!Late night at DTD earlier in the week and a full day today so I needed my wits about me. Just too tired to play poker - how sick is that? However after a doze on the sofa after a healthy dinner I managed to extract a bit of cash on the blonde cash table at 2am so the early night sort of went out of the window!

Not sure where to play tonight - don't finish until 6 (just waiting for my last client) so a bit of a push for DTD but it's only a £20 rebuy at Luton starting at 8.    ;carlocitrone;

The Red rock is mentioned a few times in an article in one of the mags about what are 'must do's' when in vegas. Several of the pros recommend there and I think Green Valley ranch?

They said it was the vegas old style play there and if you were a lag you would probably confuse the hell out of them. True or not Jim?

Title: Re: "To Blog or Not To Blog" that is the question

ill get the blog updated in the next couple days

the redrock is like playing a home game they are 90% locals and all know each others game and most topics of conversations start with rememeber when this hand happened. being selectively aggressive is the way to win here without question. flops can be see so cheaply and players struggle to get away when they flop top pair. the room itself has about 25-30 tables and they credit you $1 p/h to play which you can use for cinema bingo spa food or even hotel rooms. most casinos only allow u to spend on food. The more points u get the higher grade players card you get i have moved from red to gold already and now i get priority parking and 25% discounts on show and gift shop

Great read Jim, & loved the photos of the scenery, though, to be fair, it's not a patch on Derbyshire, not enough green. A tad ahead of Romford, though, I agree.

This I loved......the Yanks really do "get" Customer Service, eh?

When you sit at the table the dealer asks you for your players card. They swipe you in on a system the same as in the MGM. They have a little terminal in front of them which tells them the names of each player and what seat they are sitting in. So as i get my players card back im greeted by Thank You James good luck. Only a little thing again but for me it counts. When thr dealer changes the new dealer also knows your name and can refer to you by name if he needs to. It also lets all the players on the table know each other by name and makes a more relaxed and friendly place to play.

doing romford a little injustice i feel!

just to the north of romford there is some wonderful countryside, old bedford park spreads across to hainault and epping forests where the scenery and wildlife are fantastic.
of course not a patch on derbyshire but still it can be a beautiful part of the country.

There are parts of Essex which, in truth, are almost bearable. Be better when the hills they have ordered arrive, though. But even flattest, dullest, Essex - & it is largely flat & dull compared to Derbyshire, Wiltshire, Herefordshire, Sussex, etc - beats any part of America hands down. Shame we can't - DTD & APAT apart (;)) run Poker Comps & Ring Games too well.

I saw an episode of QI and they spoke about a giant metor landing in England and where would it land. They agreed it would land in Yorkshire being as its the biggest county also that the people of Yorkshire would be happy with it even if it destroy 1/2 the county. They would be proud of it and pleased it didnt land in Lancashire

Well, I should have added..."in my personal opinion".......

The sort of countryside beauty I admire most is only possible in a temperate climate, and in more than 20 visits to Africa, I've never seen Countryside which appeals to me, though Kenya, lush & tropical, has the requisite amount of greenery & foliage, though a somewhat restricted range of tree varieties.

Much of mainland Europe lacks enough topsoil to sustain much grass or tree growth, though Sweden & Norway are particularly pleasing to my eye.

America? I've not been there many times - 6, maybe 8, & I've not travelled much in the USA outside of California, Nevada, New York, & Hawaii. Even the much-vaunted Hawaii lacks much topsiol, being volcanic, so it's more rocky outcrops than lush grass. Red Rock, in Nevada, is "dramatic" to my eye, rather than beautiful. Not enough greenery, see?

Great Britain has rolling hills, lush pasture & meadows, patchwork-quilt fields, divided by hedgerows & dry-stone walls, meandering rivers & streams, a larger variety of trees than almost anywhere on earth, (I have a thing about trees), & the countryside supports a lovely variety of bird & animal-life. Great Britain is, to my mind, truly God's Country. (I exempt Essex from my comments - obviously. Essex is, metaphorically, our armpit, or anus, or the inside of a nostril).

Ok so i guess i owe a long post seeing as i havent posted on my blog since i got married on March 26th. Well i have been married for just over 2 months now and i have to admit that i have been very happy for most of it. This is mainly because our 3 months was up and we had to return to sunny England. I could only stomach a week there but Nancy stayed for over 3 weeks to visit friends and family both in England and Ireland.

Well i went against Kev's advice and got married and i have to say i have never been so happy. i honestly wish we had done it sooner. Im suprised at how well Nancy has settled in to life over here and how settled in she is. When we were on our way to the airport to fly to the UK she said to me cant we just stay i dont want to go back. I never expected to hear those words from her 3 months ago.

Vegas life is amazing. The weather is amazing. I come down in the morning at 7am and its bright blue skies and the temp is mid 70s perfect. Its getting to the mid 90s in the afternoon so its not too hot just yet. As long as you have plenty of water it is never a prob and everywhere you go has air con anyway. I was in the Red Rock today and a player was complaing that the air con was too cold you can never keep poker players happy.

We have found a house. offer excepted and all things going well we should be in by the last day of this month. After seeing it for a 2nd time we put on offer in of $40k under the asking price and they snapped our hand off. The market over here is really carzy its amazing what you can buy compared to back home. Our rental house doesnt have a pool so it will be good to get into the new place and be able to soak in the pool when the heat gets crazy.

On a poker front i havent been playing too much. I know play for a living and i find that i play less than when it was more of a hobby. When i tell people im just playing a few hours a day and a few days a week i find people not believing me. 90% of my poker is at the Red Rock and i have just checked my records to discover i played 1 session on the strip in May. That was a 5/10 game in the Venetian. Im making a good steady no stress living playing locally at the RR so why go chasing action down at the strip. I do find it boring playing holdem cash day in day out. If i could get some good live omaha action on a regular basis things would be a bit easier. It does suprise me that if you say you play poker it means you play holdem.

im going to the airport tomorrow for the 4th time in 7 days. I have always found it strange for the airport to be so centrally located. I wonder how many other major cities in the world have an airport in the city itself.

i have 2 friends from Luton staying with me for the next 2 weeks dave pokermuppet colton and dave johnson. Should be a good laugh having the 2 of them around and ill try to show them a different side of Vegas to what they have seen in the past.

it will be good for me having them about as they will want to see a lot of the wsop and hit the cash action on the strip.

I found it so strange being back in england last week. You forget just how green the place is. In saying that i had lived in Romford and where i live in Vegas def has moe greenery. Everywhere i went seemed to be dirty and rundown. The weather had been nice the week before i got there but it was totally miserable the whole time.

I know the steriotype that we all have of Americans but im kinda getting used to it now. All the Have a Nice Day Now really is meant with the nicest of intentions whereas if in England you speak to someone you dont know in the street your classes as some kind of wierdo. I got on the train to Luton and i have never seen so many people not look at each other.

good old Virgin. The flight in from Gatwick has been delayed by 6 hours it now get in just after 6pm so they are making up a bit of time.

i wanted to get to the Rio to see some action in the $1500 i hope James Aikenhead all the best i think he has great talent. 1 time more for the hitsquaders.

ESPN are covering the FT so i hope he gets some good TV time and maybe even signed up for a sponsership deal from it.

I remember Chili and James sitting in the grandstand drinking beers and watching Alan Smurfit winning his bracelet. What a difference a year makes

Had the 2 Daves staying with me for a couple of days now its been a good laugh having them around.

you def have a different outlook on life when the 2 of them are around.

there flight was delayed 6 hours in the end so the 2 weary travellers just had a quiet night and an early night. We did a little tour of where i live and we went to the Red Rock for dinner. They got to see the poker room and were impressed by the place but both decided it was no Luton

Can you make a movie of Muppet in Vegas, please. Comedy value imo

Got to go to the new house today for the surveyors report. Its amazing how differnet buying a house is compared to how its done in the UK.

Gonna be god to get into our own house and really start to put down some routes. Its gonna cost me a fortune with all the furnishings that are needed to get the house sorted. We knew this would be the case and we have been getting bits and pieces as we go along.

Hopefully we will be in by the end of the month which has upset my landlord in our rental house, but i have been straight and honest with him from the beginning. 5 months is def long enough in a rental.

Petrol prices keep on increasing over here. I know its nowhere near as bad as it is in the uk and im still paying a lot less than what i was when i left the UK but it is amazing how it has gone from $2.85 to $4.05 in the 4 months that i have been here.

I still look at it as cheaper than the UK but i guess i need to think i only buy US gallons now so that is how i need to think.

My mindset has changed at poker and i do think $s i dont make a call of $100 thinking its just 50 quid these days

Dave and Dave have been here for a few days and have been having a good time. It rainned here 2 days ago just a drizzle in the afternoon but they had a good moan about it.

When we dont have visitors we prob eat in 6 nights a week but when we have guests we eat out most nights. Of all the things that Vegas does good food is one of them. Im sure its also a good place for the veggies but its def a great place for meat lovers. So many places do great steaks and at amazing prices.

The 3 of us have been playing both on the strip and at the Red Rock. We went to the RR last night we didnt get in there until about 10pm and we were happy to see 3 full $2/5 games in full swing. It is suprising to see how busy the room is. We had popped into the Mirage earlier for old times sake. The place was worse than dead. We had just come from Ceasers where they were queueing out the door. The mirage had 5 tables open 1 was limit stud and the other 4 were 2/4 3/6 and 4/8 limit holdem. What used to be a great room and at 1 point the most important cardroom in Vegas is now empty. I dont normally even go in there anymore but i thought id take the guys in. What a shame. I have noticed a lot of the Mirage dealers now work in other casinos on the strip.

Yep - it's in vegas, full of Americas and more than a bus ride away from the Arndale centre.....takes a lot to get anything past these boys...
