how much would be needed to travel and stay in vegas playing in a comp a day for 7-14 days?

think a bit more information is needed. travelling from where?  type of accomodation required?  comp buy in range?  appetite?  teetotal?  lapdances ? etc

Minimum $100K including karaoke and "incidental" expenses  ::)

Although you could scrimp by on around $2K with less of the aforementioned ;)

Budget something for the $1/$2 NL tables you're sure to win your hotel costs with a tight approach.

according to expedia i can use BMI direct to vegas from manchester

thinking of spring time

looking at packages on expedia but no idea on hotels

if i should be on or off the strip or elsewhere


i got a small ISA maturing within the next few weeks for a sum that could buy me into the wsop main event without the expenses so want to know if i can have a reasonable time in vegas for that sort of money

Go for WSOP for a smaller buy in, you know you want a bracelet!  ;)

but surely wsop time will be more expensive for flights and hotels and the weatehr will be too hot wheras spring the weather should be like the med in summer

Weather is largely irrelevant in Vegas.

for me yeah, but i might have to take a non poker playing guest with me to insure i dont kill myself by not looking after my diabities etc etc

cause when i travel i dont look after myself properly

so i need the weather ok for them to have a good time too

You'll get a much cheaper holiday if you stay downtown Iron and it might potentially be easier for you to get from hotel to hotel there as everything is pretty much under one pedestrianised covered street.

There'll probably still be plenty of games to choose from - Binions, the Golden Nugget and the Plaza are all close by.

Accomodation would be cheap and cheerful in most places downtown, with the exception of the Nugget which is priced similar to the Strip hotels and is a 4* officially.

Oh, and there's a lapdancing club on the same street!

Heidi is the source of all knowledge about downtown Vegas holidays but its definitely worth considering if you're on a tight budget.

I'd definetly do it..10k is more than enough, me thinks. Flights during the WSOP seem to be around 700£ (Not that I've looked obviously :) ) but I'm sure you could get something cheaper when booking early (like now)..my mrs looked the other day and,Glasgow to Vegas is around 400£..

. Screw the WSOP if you want to go at that time..play some of the fessies they have at Binions (The one with the 200 and 400$ tourneys they had during last years WSOP looked amazing) or just go for the cash games and a bit of fun.

I am going to try and seriously qualify for the WSOP but only take the money and play cash over there..if I could win a 10k package and thus have a 10k$ bankroll to play cash with while there I'm sure I could have a blast during the WSOP. why play a 1500 runner 1500$ tourney?..play some 5-10 cash with drunken tourists or tilty poker players instead :)...Now just to get my wife on my side ..and allow me a week or two in Vegas for poker playing purposes :) :)

There are a few of us going in april 2008 -- and as with any holiday it can be as expensive as you want it to be. Play cash games to reduce your hotel bill (and build a stash) -- and then play whatever your bankroll allows -- as I say it could be done with $300 a day or $3,000 -- your choice

well as its my first trip i am planning on not going with a big group as i would more than likely neglect my health

so i am going to go with 1 other person preferably someone with medical background who isnt intrested in sitting playing poker 24/7

so they can keep an eye on times and food etc etc

cost for 2 sharing isnt much more than the cost of 1 going alone (according to expedia)

I have some fond memories of "Glitter Gulch" on my first trip to LV in '95 or '96 but it looked different the last couple of times that I was over there. They even had huge bouncers on the door and I just walked past.

I'd spend a bit more and stay somewhere half decent and closer to the action. I wouldn't normally stay downtown as the action is better on the strip, however for ease of getting around and lots of cardrooms close together it may not be a bad option for you. Make sure you stay on one of the fremont street hotels though as the cheaper options can be a dodgy walk away late at night. If you give me your dates I'll do a search and give you a bit more detail if you want?

If you're going to stay downtown it's worth paying a little extra and staying at The Nugget which has by far the nicest rooms imo.

I would agree with the others who say that you would be best suited by staying downtown. You have Binions, The Plaza, The Nugget, and I'm sure there are other cardrooms too, all within a stone's throw.

You can always have days out when you visit The Strip.

Downtown is a fair distance from the Strip (where I imagine you will want to spend the majority of your time) so an on-strip hotel makes more logistical sense. Plus, if this is, I get the impression, your first Vegas visit..then the Strip should be your primary choice.

It depends on your budget I suppose but there are 'cheaper' hotel on the Strip (the Imperial Palace for one).

I use a couple of comparison sites SideStep.com (http://www.sidestep.com/hotels) and Kayak.com (http://www.kayak.co.uk/hotels) as well as Expedia/Hotels.com (which are basically the same). SideStep and Kayak have handy filtering features to narrow down your choices.

Oh...and once you have a price in mind...check the hotel's own website.

Personally the furthest 'downtown' I would stay is the Stratosphere (indeed I am doing so in January) which is, frankly, NOT on the Strip but rather in limbo between the Strip and Downtown. If I'm not on the Strip then I'd consider the Orleans or Rio (but that will probably be packed at WSOP time)

Try a Google Map/Earth search of Las Vegas and see.

There are wheelchair accessible cabs in Vegas (of the MPV type rather than the standard 'saloon' cars) but any good car valet will identify your needs and help out with the right selection. If not, go to the concierge desk and ask for assistance.

Downtown is probably about 7-8 miles from the strip, about a $20 cab ride. My first choice would also be the strip, but I'm just thinking in terms of you being able to get from cardroom to cardroom without too much effort, you could easily wheel yourself around the few main ones downtown.

If you go with someone they will also find more to do on the strip rather than downtown if they are leaving you to play poker for a while, all things to think about.

All true and a good point about the closeness of the downtown casinos.

You also might want to consider the poker rates the various casinos offer. You will be restricted to playing mostly at that casino but worth it if your not bothered about jumping from casino to casino. I'm staying at the venetian in Jan for a few days, its an absolute steal at $159 per night during the week as its a fantastic hotel and great cardroom.

The reason for suggesting downtown as a base was primarily down to the need for easy wheelchair trips.  Even on the central strip the hotels are quite far apart (a few hundred yards door to door, normally via a walkway/escalator in crowded streets, so it's not ideal for getting around in a chair).  Also, there's a lot of construction work going on on the strip at present and I don't see this changing for a while, so pavements will be blocked off in places, making it even worse.

I think downtown is the better option for easier 'poker room hopping' than the Strip as I think the Strip would end up needing a lot of expensive short cab trips to get from place to place.  You could still always take a cab to a specific Strip hotel and back from downtown as and when you wanted.  I think this would be a cheaper overall option than having probably 5-6 cab rides between Strip hotels each day.

If your heart is set on the Strip then it might be worth looking at the south side as Luxor, Mandalay Bay and Excalibur are all connected by a tram system (Excalibur will be the cheapest of the 3).  The poker rooms are a bit on the small side here but you could get across from Excalibur to MGM Grand reasonably easily and the poker room there is much bigger.  You'd also have 5 of the big-name casinos in fairly easy reach (the other one being New York New York which doesn't have a poker room but does have Coyote Ugly!).

 I will definetly be going over this year..even if I don't win a 10k package online. I might play the 2-7 or PLo event but will only be playing cash otherwise while I'm there...the mrs knows and is OK with it (will probably come along)..so just a matter of making some poker moneys...or save up a bit of the old wages..

Maybe consider the Orleans Iron, plenty of poker at affordable cost's, excellent array of facilities, then when you want to get to the strip for a bigger game or touristy things, free shuttle service. they have a good choice of eateries, cinema etc.
Where some of these flight prices have come from amazes me, the last time we went which OK it was earlier this year, we only payed 362 for BOTH of us in flights. One can fly for Xmas thee directfrom Man, for (last time i priced it) 258 pp.

We have 2 trips booked at the moment , we go a couple of times a year and normally stay in the Bellagio but have changed the next 2

going boxing day for 4 nights , doing this one on the cheap, Virgin economy ( £280 each ) and 4 nights at Bills ( Barbary Coast ) at 60 quid a night

then on 31 May for 14 nights, Maxjet business class at £773 each ( if they dont go bust by then )  and staying at Platinum hotel  ( new all suite place 10 mins walk from centre of strip , prices are amazing for what you get ) , hotel is $193 a night

The way prices are at the moment, the Venetian is the only place to stay imo. The poker room is well spaced out and easily accessible, plus two tournaments every day, all around the $200 mark bar the $500 on Saturday.

Shuttle service is good, goes to middle of the strip every 20 minutes and has a wheelchair bit.

Also, the titty bar next door to Orleans is blonde recommended.

Have a look at Fat Wallet.Go to forums and then Vegas hotel deals.

Ironside, try looking on airline-networks.co.uk, this is a site I use to get a baseline price, and then shop around to try and beat that, often going to the hotels site and the air carriers site independently will work out cheaper.

For convenience we tend to stay in the Mirage. Its central and you can get to most places quickly by cab.
ceasars is next door, altho in a chair you might want to use a Cab. Venetian is stright across the street. you can get a monorail to Treasure Island.
Poker rate is Daily Room Rates:
$109 (Sunday -Thursday)
$149 (Friday & Saturday) altho they charged us $199.

To get poker rate they expect you to play in their room but its always busy and they cater a spread of cash and even SnG.

Good timing for this to be bumped.

We'r looking to go for 4-5 weeks in summer 2009.

Any idea on amount a money that will be required for general food/going out/touristy stuff for that amount of time.

We can get a lot of food in to make as we'r renting a house.
