Post by: NoflopsHomer on January 08, 2008, 05:06:39 PM
If Day 1's story was all about the rapid rise and equally quick fall of the Monte Carlo Winner Gavin Griffin, yesterday, at least from our perspective, was Thewy's jump into the top five having started the day with just 16k. Early on, it was all grinding but followed by a late explosion to the top. Elsewhere, the online player 'Rizen' is the chip leader, and already some in the media have him nailed on for a final table appearance already.

Today, we'll be trying to get down to 36 players which will be a bit of dance as we get around the bubble. Get ready for it to be slow, slow, quick, slow as we make it into the money.

Also happening today is the $2k Battleships Event, which starts at 3pm today. It'll be able to be viewed on the Pokerstars site, with 32 people playng today and another 32 tomorrow. Dan Carter is in as 'DanistheKing'. We'll have a full list for todays players later, and if anyone wants to post updates about it, feel free to put them on here. First prize in that competition looks to be $44,800, the final being at 9pm (2am UK) tomorrow night.

I'm not personally catching a host of exits, but I'm am spotting the odd double up followed by an elated grin. The latest player to wear such a joyous facial gesture was Matt Zoorob, whose A-J was enough to fend off T-T when an Ace hit the Flop.

----------

Duy Li, who had such a cracking day yesterday, isn't fairing quite so well during these early stages, last seen facing an all-in from young Jacob Walsh on a 4d-6h-Js Flop. "Have you got Queens?" asks Duy Li, perhaps hoping that Jacob would suddenly lose sight of the point of poker and simply reveal the identity of his hand. "Do I need Queens?" replies Jacob calmly. After a subsequent umming and aahing, Duy Li did indeed make the fold, and was shown 8d-8s as a reward. Whether he was ahead or not, I'm still not sure, Nines could certainly have been feasible.

-----------

Another big stacker dribbling away a few chips is Johan Berquist. He raised from under the gun to 10k, bet a further 14k on the 3d-9h-4h Flop, but reluctantly folded when Kevin Schaffel (pictured below) made it 36k to take down the pot.

-----------

What are they doing?! We've only got 4 Brits remaining in this ruddy event, and they're creating a civil war! With Julian Thew raising it up to 12k pre-flop, Craig Hopkins peeled (ahem) peeled back his cards before making it a total of 36k to play. Not one to back down from a fight, Julian duly called and the two fellow countrymen saw a 5h-9c-3d Flop. Pensive and prudent in his approach, Craig rested his chin on his hand, furrowed his eyebrows and adamantly planted his remaining column onto the felt. Julian swiftly folded and The Apple survived a core hand.

As the players awaited the starting whistle like an uber-excited FA Cup Final crowd, I also caught sight of Craig Hopkins, currently sharing a table with Julian (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) Thew (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) but enjoying a bit of banter with the rest of the table. Again, he doesn't seem too nervous given what is up for grabs.

So come on then, why is he called the Apple?

Actually, you can credit Floppy for that after his picture on yesterdays thread. Maybe it will stick :P
(http://www.blondepoker.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=7408&g2_serialNumber=1)

Afraid 'The Apple' just got pipped in a pot, raising it it up but then passing to a bet from Rory Brennan who scooped up all those golden delicious chips on a 5d 3c 9c board.

The 'Jon Raab' system is in use today. For those who don't know, all the players are given cards they have to carry around with them, which means they are easy to identify for chip counts for the press, but also means we can fully track just about everyone in the tournament. For example, I can tell you Peter Dumdeang was knocked out by Michael Melin with Queens vs Aces, the latter holding. Or that Gerald Lauderman's K-Q was knocked out by Tony Burton K-K on a King high board.

Over on table 16, Stuart Taylor was pointing out a huge pot involving Hans-Ari Varsi (seat 1), Glen Chorny (seat 4 - grey hat) and Justin Wright (seat 8 - green hat).

The board reed Ts 5d 6s, Hans-Ari had bet 32k on the flop and both others had called. On the Ahrt turn, the Norwegian checked, and Glen moved in for his remaining 70k or so, into the 120k+ pot. Justin Wright went deep into the tank before the clock was called on him. He anxiously looked at the tournament clock, seeing how many players were left before making the call for the majority of his chips. Hans-Ari quickly passed his cards.

Glen: 6c 6d

Justin: Ks Js

"Please don't do it to me," pleaded Glen...He was rewarded when the river was the ultimate blank card, the 2c. Justin Wright, crippled by this hand, exited soon after.

Barry Greenstein is OUT.

All-in with Kh Kd on a Jh Th 5h, you'd think he was in good shape, except that fellow Stars Pro Hevad Khan was holding the Ac Ahrt leaving Barry drawing slim. Two blanks later and he was left to sign a copy of his book for Hevad.

Christian Harder currently has a face like a smacked bottom after being outdrawn by British player Andrew Teng. I didn't quite see the pre-flop action, but can probably assume that Harder raised it up from the hijack position, Teng pushed all-in from the cut-off and Harder called.

On their backs, and with Teng's Ks Js in need of a little assistance against Harder's Aspades 9h, the board was a double-edged one, the unrelenting 3s 8s 7s Flop giving Teng the second nut flush, but Harder the potential re-draw with the As.

"He still has so many ways to beat me," observes Teng. However, neither of them came as the 2c Turn and 6h River bricked out, leaving Harder to reluctantly pay out the additional 32k.

Finally, Thewy has just lost a decent pot and is down to 270k. He fired 22k on a 8s 6c 3h flop against two players, getting one to fold, the second, Evan Tindell called and then called another 40k on the 3d turn. Julian checked to him on the 6d river where Evan fired out 100k. Julian eventually passed, telling me after, "It's too early for hero calls."

-----------

With just a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle's handful of British players remaining in this event, we can't really afford to lose too many players, which is why it saddens me to report that online whiz Andrew Teng has been eliminated. I had to prise the information from former neighbour Christain Harder, but if my source is correct, Teng sang his swan song with K-Q, pushing over the top of an initial raiser but being called by A-Q. No improvement, and he has no choice but to spend the rest of the week in the Bahamas. It's a hard life.

-----------

Christian Hardy's stack continues to head south, he's now on 65k after doubling up Rhett Butler. With Hardy raising under the gun with Ac 8s, all the chips found their way in after Rhett Butler raised from latish position with Ahrt Ks. Although I was begging for a cheeky 8s to hit so I could utilise my long awaited 'Gone With The Wind' gag, the 7s Tc Td Ts Jc board severely let me down and allowed that Mr Butler to fight another day.

Nicolas Levi is OUT. K-Q into A-K.

Kris Kuykendall has just trebled up in one hand, He shoved utg for 80k, the small blind called, before Jon Friedberg pushed from the bigblind shutting out the other player. Kuykendall's Jacks were in poor shape against Kings, until he spiked a Jack on the river.

Stuart Taylor has around 110k, after little rush of cards but no customers he's been quiet.

John Zioulas bets 40k on a Qd 9d Ks flop, Tyler Dickinson check/calls, before both check the 9s turn. On the 2s river, Dickinson bets 60k and Zioulas adds another 60k which Dickinson calls.

What was Zioulas' hand?

Just the 9c 9d...

Oh and it's ;mc; bubbletime!!!

And the bubble has burst, it's Frederik Agersnap deciding to push on a K-7-4 board with Td 2d (backdoor flush draw) except he ran into Peter Jetten's K-Q.

Err..ok.

Consistent casher Lee Markholt is OUT. He ran Qc Jc into Duy Li's Ad Th and failed to improve on a 2d Td 2h 7d 3c board.

Remember that website Hot or Not in which you submitted photos of your worst enemy to humiliate them a prove in public how hideous they are? Well, if it was based on who was hot in poker at the moment, then these cool dudes would be top of the pile. Hey, this is the Magnificent Seven!

Irina Liepina is OUT. Queens vs Kings.

Jon Friedberg has doubled up with Kh Kd against the Ahrt Js of Ross Romash

The action packed board was...

Ts Qh Kh Qd 5s

Glen Chorny -- 570k

Stuart 'Zpaceman' Taylor waves me over and says, "I've done it again, big suckout. Pushed with A-6 and called by A-Q. Flopped a six and I'm up to 150k."

Someone who didn't suckout though was Julian (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) Thew (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225), he'd lost a couple of decent sized pots leaving him with about 120k. Looking at the flattish structure of the payout, he'd said he was just going to 'give it some welly' and ended up pushing with A-T against Elky's Tens and failed to improve.

Johan Til is now pushing up the poker daisies. I didn't see what his hand was, but noticed that he ran into the Pocket Cowboys of Glen Chordy.

------------

Also juggling up the choice of bar, beach or cash game is David Benyamine lookalike James Pechac. His Jacks stumbled on those darn Kings a game and a helpless Q-9-7-8-4 board.

------------

Irish-soon-to-be-adopted-Englishman Rory Brennan has shot up to 240k after snipering down an opponent with Queens versus A-Q.

------------
All-in with Sixes, Brazil's Eugenio Carmoneto (those dudes can make any name sound exotic!) found himself up against the Kings of John Bird, but with the dealer popping out a testicle-crunching 4-6-T-T-3 board it was the latter who'd be down to the felt, a mere 10k red chip being returning to the American's dejected paws. Oh well, I'm sure Seat 10's Garrett Adelstein consolidated the agony by adding, "I folded a Six."

And one hand later it was all-in, Bird making his move from the button after under-the-gun had made a standard pre-flop raise. After everyone else had folded, under the gun announced, "I think you're going to be happy", subsequently revealing a rather mischievous, blind-stealing Qs 2s.

"Oh no, I'm dominated," cried Bird as he flipped over a lack-lustre 7h 2d.

No Seven on the Jd 8s Jc Flop, but after the Ts and 9c River, Bird had hit a miracle straight! Shame he lost to a bigger one.

Keep the updates coming for the rising star Håkon Bentsen. Some information about who his tablemates are would be nice too.

Afraid we think he's out. Can't spot him at any tables and checking in with the Norwegian bloggers and they don't know what happened to him either. With the average at 270k and him coming back with around 145k at the break, he's probably decided to take a shot for the real money now that he had $16k guaranteed. Sorry folks. :(

---------

According to champion railer Andy Lowe, Stuart Taylor has departed after "running into Aces". Unfortunately for the patriots, this means there are just two  flag fliers remaning - Asa Smith and Craig Hopkins.

---------

Double up for Hafiz Khan courtesy of the enigmatic John Dibella, the latter's A-J no match for Khan's Pocket Kings, his demands of a cheeky straight after a 5-3-2 Flop falling on stony Poker God ground.

Splendid news for the Brits, Asa Smith is still there with a health 310,000, as is Craig Hopkins, now on a tasty yum yum 410,000.

----------

Sean Gardiner is OUT. No further details, except that if it was a bad beat, he's vomiting in the toilets, and if it was a straight forward exit, he's playing online in the lobby.

----------

Men are interesting beings and differ in many ways to women. Not only are we deemed less sensitive, but we also have a seemingly unrelenting sex drive, perhaps driven by one of the major assets that separate the genders, the male testicles. However, it is these hanging spheres that can often be a major burden to men, and poker players especially so, as they can often be made available for others for a good, firm kicking.

One player who has experienced this form of physical abuse today is Scandinavian player and early pace setter Johan Berquist. After Jaques Zaicik raised it up from the small blind, Johan re-raised from the big. Dwelling momentarily, Jaques announced call and turned his hand over, seemingly ignorant to the fact that Johan still had two stacks of chips in front of him.

With the Tournament Director called over, it was decided that Jaques' hand, which was A-7 suited, incidentally, would be alive, but not be in a position to bet. On this note, play continued and a J-5-2 rainbow Flop was dealt. With Jaques' actions frozen, play moved straight to Johan who pushed all-in for what looked like a fair amount of chips.

Without hesitation and to the surprise of everyone at the table, and any onlooker for that matter, Jaques announced call without hesitation as if he was simply refusing to be pushed around or taken advantage of. However, he was in need of divine Poker God assistance as Johan had Pocket Sixes, and seemed quite happy with his current situation.

Unfortunately, poker is a very cruel game, and those Scandinavian love balls did indeed receive a wallop in the form of a gut-wrenching Seven that hit the Turn. Jaques banged the table and screamed "Yes" as if he'd just won the lottery as Johan shook his head in disbelief. A harmless 5c later and Jaques was left to rake in a chunky pot as the organisers broke the table. Johan, meanwhile, could only slip out of view and weep on the rail.

I think everyone agreed that this was a truly bizarre moment. "He missed his Flop ans still called," observed one startled player. "He's been making mistakes all day," said another. From my perspective, it seemed like a very odd call indeed. I'm no expert by any means, but there are very few hands he's beating there and the chip stacks weren't really such that Johan would be messing around with rags. I don't think anyone thought Johan had a weaker hand than A-7.

Thierry Van Den Berg has hit a big double up with 9s 9h against the awesomely named Hunter Frey's Qc Qs after the board came out a topsy-turvy Ac 3s 9c 8c Kh. The Dutchman was extremely honest with his stark assessment of the hand, "I've played pretty well today but this was very very bad."

Asa Smith makes it 25k to play, Robert Lederer raises to 70k, folded back to the Brit who moved all-in, Lederer folded and Smith took a healthy pot.

Laughs between Duy Lee and Emil Timberg, the latter betting the 9s 3d 6s 5h 9h river. Duy Lee made the call for what looked like a third of his stack. Timberg grimaced and flipped Aspades 8s for a missed flush draw, then his eyebrows raised even higher when Duy Lee showed Ad 8h.

;kc;

Duncan Bell is OUT after calling for his tournament life with 7c 6c on a 6s 3s 5h board against Eric Van Den Burg's Ad Qs, a 9c on the turn but the Qh river sealed the Canadian's fate.

David 'The Dragon' Pham we think is our chipleader with around 1.2 million after busting a player with A-6 against A-J on an A-9-6-x board. Emil Timberg is in second place, with about 1.1 million and Christopher Klodnicki looks to be part of the million club after just doubling through Diego Perez with Jacks versus Tens in a 1 million chip pot.

Peter Jetten, though the first guy to break a million, has lost a few, and looks to be down to about 600k. He's stuck with William Thorsson two to his right and Eric Lynch two to his left. Stuck between a rock and a hard place...Oh wait a sec, that's not the best analogy!

Thorsson just bust a guy holding Qd Jd on 9d 8d 2c against Ad Td, catching a gutshot Ten on the river. Funnily enough he's about a 3-1 dog in this hand, if the other player was holding top set he'd only be a 2-1 dog!

Rory Brennan is OUT, we couldn't spot at the tables, so over to the cash desk where they confirmed he was the 51st place finisher and the money-jump bubble.

Eric Lynch just knocked James McCrink. David Pham (who looks to be sitting on around 1.8 million now, most taken from Emil Timberg and a few from Lynch) had opened from MP, Lynch re-raised from the cut-off and McCrink moved in for just about 10k to 20k more than Lynch's re-raise. Pham passed and Lynch called with Ac Jc, probably a little relieved to see he was racing McCrink's 9c 9h. 3 hearts turned up on the flop, leaving Lynch with just 4 outs but the Jd turned up to send the elder gentleman out.

Ubershort stack Richard Furay is OUT, Q-J into the Kings of Hafiz Khan.

Craig Hopkins -- 670k (just looking more comfortable with each passing moment)
Asa Smith -- 200k (just looking for a spot)
Kelly Jones of Stereophonics -- (I'm just looking, I'm not buying...)

Elky has doubled through twice both times against A-J, the first time he held 9-9, then the second time A-Q knocking out Hevad Khan in process. He's up to 600k.

Asa Smith has knocked out Jon Friedberg, 8d 8s against Kh Qs on a 3h 2s 6h 7d 3s board. He's back up to 300k.

Joseph Elpayaa, who has a little following of 'balla' boys just doubled through I think Garrett Adelstein with Aces against Tens on a 9-high flop.

Kris Kuykendall's Tens faired better on the 9-high flop against Jose Cuenca's Ace King knocking the Spaniard out.

Peter Jetten is OUT. He moved all-in on the river of a Kh Jd 9h Qs 6h board. Emil Timberg dwelt for an age before calling with Kc Qc. Peter insta-mucked.

For a long period of time, we remained on 41 players and the bubble gradually expanded until it almost filled the room. However, just moments ago, that bubble stretched to its very limit and finally burst, a huge swarm of onlookers swamping the table to see the unfortunate victim make his untimely exit.

With Glen Chorny limping from early position, the action folds around to Asa Smith who double checks with the dealer that Chorny has in fact limped (I assume this is a rarity) before making up the small blind. Bertrand (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=485) Grospellier (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=485), in the big blind, follows suit with a check.

After the dealer has popped out a dangerous, perhaps action provoking 7d 6c Tc Flop, Smith quickly checks and ElkY bets out 25k, perhaps hoping to take the pot down there and then. Two seats down, the pre-flop limper limps once again and flat-calls, but is soon put to the test when Asa makes a deep reach and, with a slightly trembling hand, shoves out a column of blue chips worth 105k more.

ElkY takes a second glance at his cards, sighs momentarily and folds. Chorny, however, is less reluctant to let his hand go, and after a quick peek back down at his chips, nonchalantly announces all-in for approximately 350k more. Before he has barely reached the end of the all-familiar phrase, Asa is announcing call and virtually beating him into the pot.

The crowd buzzes around the table and the dealer urges the players to reveal their hands. As Chorny confidently flips over his 7h 6h for bottom two pair, Asa swiftly shows his rather nutty, but still vulnerable 9h 8s for the made straight.

Whilst your British blogging team hold their breath in anticipation, the remaining players secretly and selfishly chant for an outdraw so they can boast of a venture in Day 4 of this PokeStars Caribbean Adventure. And, with a 6s on the Turn they get their wish, triggering Chorny into an uncontrollable fit of shouting "Yes!" and Asa into a state of devastation.

Great performance from Asa, getting it in with the best of it and ended his night with a bout of misfortune. His facial expression and dropped shoulders said it all, but as the 41st place finisher from such a big field of players, who should be immensely proud of his performance here in the Bahamas.

Play has now ended for the day. We'll restart with the final 40 players playing down to the final table tomorrow from 12pm (5pm uk time). One Brit remaings, Craig 'The Apple' Hopkins, whilst David 'The Dragon' Pham remains chip leader with about 2 million chips, roughly 10% of those in play, and it's hard to look past him as the favourite for this event.

Tomorrow also sees the beginning of EPT live, so we'll probably be more focused on the remaining four tables. Feel free to post/discuss hands from the live feed table on the update thread tomorrow though, as we won't be able to catch many hands from it for much of the time, (also we wouldn't mind knowing what goes on there too!).

Sadly I'm behind Raymer and Negreanu and about 40 other people in the commetary pecking order...Neverends....
