Title: Blondites in the well?
Post by: LuckyLloyd on January 21, 2008, 04:20:58 PM
As underlined by Jman's previous well, they can be extremely beneficial if the occupant puts some time into it and knows what they are on about. If the occupant happens to have some mildly interesting things to say about things other than poker then all the better.

Thing is, Jman or Aejones don't play the games that the users of this forum do. Over on boards.ie we have put some of the regs in the well - and continue to do so on an intermittant basis. It has generally proved to be a good learning experience (as well as entertaining!!). You don't need to play nosebleed for it to be worthwile.

Maybe it would be worthwile doing a couple with the regs over here?

from 2+2
Quote
A stranger is being shown around a village that he has just become part of. He is shown a well and his guide says "On any day except Saturday, you can shout any question down that well and you'll be told the answer" .

The man seems pretty impressed, and so he shouts down: Why not on Saturday? and the voice from in the well shouts back: Because on Saturday, it’s your day in the well.

basically a way for someone to give back to the community by answering any questions that are thrown at them, both on and off topic but mainly poker related

Yeah i like the idea. I can think of some good people on here to do it.

how is that different from what we are doing here?

please explain for the unfamiliar

Instead of simply asking general questions to a wide audience. You get to know someones thoughts on a wide range subjects that just wouldn't come up in other circumstances. It is not simply a poker topic either it is views on everything and anything, so would probably interest the wider blonde community.

[ ] OP worded his post well

I am suggesting that we start some well threads with some of the high volume posters on the hand analysis forum.

- The person doing the well would have to give prior consent;
- Each well thread would begin with five or so stock questions;
- People would then be allowed to ask what questions they saw fit - both poker and non - poker related;
- The person doing the well can decide not to answer certain questions if he feels uncomfortable with the nature of the question;
- Anyone who uses such threads as an opportunity to flame, insult or take the piss gets the banstick thrown in their direction;

From the threads I have seen before on other forums (I did one myself on boards.ie) they can make for a very good read.

Sound's good to me.  Some poker insight from the player, and some insight of the player as well.

Title: Re: Blondites in the well?

Stock questions could be debated and people could settle on what they would prefer. Something like:

- What is your current profession / place of employment?
- What stakes / games are you currently playing?
- How many hours a week do you play on average?
- Do you ever play live? If so, what games do you generally play and how much per month on average would you play?
- Are you running well of late?

Just to set the tone of the well and let people know whether their poker related question is relevant or not. After that, ask away.

TBH i knew what you were talking about but anyone who

a) doesnt read 2+2
or
b) didn't read the enlightning thread

would have been clueless as to what you were on about.

Sorry guys, completely my fault.

I approached the most desired would-be-well-er, & he was well-happy to do it, & immediately agreed, & he will start it as soon as we get it all set up.

In fact, I don't know why Tighty has not organised it all yet. Maybe because I never got back to him, to tell him we had lift-off.

I'll do the "set-up" e-mails later today, it will all be back in Tightys hands by tonight, & we'll be up & running tuit-suit.

My apologies for the delay. On behalf of Tighty, that is.

Anyway, I think it will be well worth the wait.

Strange choice if it is, given there was the "ask the pro" section when DTD sponsored the forum. Retreading alot of old ground if so imo.

I reckon it is Roland de Wolfe, if we are playing the guessing game.

I think the approach to this thing so far is kinda mad. I'd be much more interested to see regular contributers to the forum do a well - than English pros that interact rarely with the people that read; use and add to blondepoker.

The other thing is that people who post on the internet a lot / add to blondepoker a lot are likely to put more time into their responses and give out more information. Asking a pro player with a busy schedule to take time out to sit down and type out a lot of words when they don't usually do that is going to leave you with wells that are kinda meh.

Again, you don't need to be the best player in the world to be worth listening to.

All in my opinion of course.

What about some folk that have done well like Eck and Newportlad? I would agree to keep it to Blondes who interact well with others. I hear Alex is a good player so that would be good. I'd like to hear when the penny dropped for people around their game or whether they learned the game before playing seriously. Peoples journeys are always good but I agree with Lyod that we need to keep it real and well grounded.

Who is volunteering?  Reddog? We hear a lot of interesting stuff about his life so I assume the poker parts would be good too? C'mon Red, lay the marker down! What has your poker journey been like?

Hell no he isn't. (or I hope he isn't) Flushy, whatever you think of him (though I like him) , is a profitable MTT player. The guy does well for himself (from what I understand, I don't know the numbers and don't actually care all that much about the exact numbers), has gone through the ranks from small stakes to higher stakes pro-poker and will no doubt have some interesting things to say.
He might get a lot of stick on here being called a fish...and a lousy dresser... but when he did the HOTW they were always good hands that can teach you a thing or two if you bother to put in the time and effort. He will never be a UN ambassador or be as dimplomatic as Kofi Annan but you have to respect the guy for his poker skills and his opinions can not easily be ignored by those who actually want to learn how to play the game profitably. I sure as hell became a better player thanks to all the stick Flushy and Tank used to give me when I first posted on here...I just paid attention and thought about what they had to say rather than discard an opinion because I didn't like it. (or because he might have been a bit short)

Now look what you've made me do!..you made me feel all dirty!

I agree with throwing flushy down a well.

I think moorman would be a great candidate. He's now one of the world's top internet mtt players, he's blonde, he writes interestingly and he would have an interesting take on live v internet having breached both arenas. Plus he won the 5k winner takes all comp recently so he will be in the mood for a bit of chirping no doubt.

And it will give me an opportunity to finally photoshop donkey ears onto him publically.

Pab would also be good.

I think that in addition to having a primarily poker-focused Well (which covers other stuff as well, but picks people mostly because of their poker knowledge) I think there should be another Well, which is focused on other things.

There are a lot of interesting people on here who I'm sure we'd like to ask questions of/read about what they have to say on topics, but who are not at the top of the poker tree. Tikay's and Red-Dog's Vegas/Vagueness threads are a bit like that and they are very good reads.

Not that I'm casting aspersions on the quality of either of their poker games.

Except for Tikay, who I am.

Have to say I agree with Lloyd. If we can score the odd famous mtt pro, all the better. In the interim if we stick to regular blonde posters who are likely to do an interesting well, that seems to be the way to go.

Any of the following would be good imo: Flushy, Pab, Moorman, Lloyd, Alex Martin and to be honest any regular blonde poster. It doesn't necessarily have to be about poker strategy, just someone with something interesting to say.

I agree, but keep it to some sort of poker strategy. If you wanna read what they have to say (a la TJ or Red) then most of these people do have blogs!

I think the approach to this thing so far is kinda mad. I'd be much more interested to see regular contributers to the forum do a well - than English pros that interact rarely with the people that read; use and add to blondepoker.

Flushy; Jen Mason; Tikkay; Alex Martin; Longy etc, etc please.

Thats a good shout imo, it would be nice to hear the differing ways that regular people got into and play poker.

David Gent aka Geeforce. He doesn't post very often, but when he does it's usually very concise and thoughtful.

Also BlueScouse would be very interesting.

Henning Granstad, if he has time is another. He's one of the few Scandies who is a (fairly) regular vistor to the UK, and would be great to question on the differing mentalities of UK and Scandie players.

Flushy, RED, Jen, Chilli  and Lloyd would all be good value.

The ultimate would be Mantis though just so Lloyd and Flushy could disagree with everything he says.  That could be a Best of Blonde.

Nice Idea to present the person who goes in the well.

Just a thing that could make that better : I think that adding a photo of the people who come could be nice ;)
