Title: Pokerstars.com EPT Dortmund: Day 1a - At a glance
Post by: JungleCat03 on January 29, 2008, 11:20:39 AM
Hello and welcome to the EPT in Dortmund from myself and Jen.

This thread will be used purely for our updates form the tournament. Should you wish to request chip counts from us, or even be able to get a picture or two of your preferred combatants, click the link below to make your request on our interactive thread.

http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=30844.0

We come fresh from the exciting welcoming party last night, which boasted such attractions as man spinning on head on football whilst juggling enormous baton with feet. There's probably a far more concise and aerodyte way of expressing that. Dude had skills, that's all I'm saying.

Also present as part of the entertainment were "Snake Woman" and "Fire Woman", sounding intriguingly like potential Heroes characters. Sadly, I missed out on these whilst trying to restrain "Chocolate Fountain Jen", less likely to make it into the heroes show, but definitely more focused than those two on trying to launch herself headfirst into the decadent chocolate fountain Pokerstars had provided.

Amongst the players at the party were Julian (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) Thew (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) of course, who was fresh faced and ready to add yet another title to his already bulging sack of trophies. Can anyone stop him? We were also joined by German player George (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=556) Danzer (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=556), who although famous partly for sharing a table with Dimitri Noble (remember HIM!) in the 2006 WSOP, has recently picked up a sponsorship deal with pokerstars. Despite success at tournaments all over europe, fame from the part Danzer played in the 2006 WSOP has stayed with him, and I witnessed evidence of this as a drunk Canadian came over to him last night in an amusing exchange..

Drunk Canadian: "Hey man you're that guy who was on on Dmitri Noble's table...what a donk huh!"

GD: [laughing] "Yes, that's me"

DC: "I thought you were awwwwesome man! I'm totally bringing a t shirt down for you to sign tomorrow ok?"

GD: "Ok, sure"

DC: "Cool man! I'm gonna put it straight up on Ebay! Seeya tomorrow dude!"

Bizarre, but very amusing!

The EPT is due to commence at 15:00 over here in Dortmund, which will be 14:00 for you guys following in the UK. Once we get to the casino, we should have a little more information on runners, player lists etc so we will post them up in due course. Join us for what promises to be a quality tournament, packed with talent.

Seeyou there!

Well we've traversed the woods and mountains, journeying far from our hotel on the other side of the country town.  The Casino Hohensyburg is a very pleasant venue - I remember it from last year - with its modern art and glass stairways and big tourney room.  Currently the players down for the first start day are mainly clumping around tall tables with tea and coffee, having picked up their Player IDs which will, hopefully, track their progress through the tournament a la Systeme du Jon Raab.

There's an atmosphere of competent cordiality here, and I have every hope that play will actually start in about half an hour.

Spotted (not playing today):  Daniel Negreanu

Spotted (playing today): Rob Hollink
Alex Kravchenko
Steve Jelinek
Maz Nawab
Cristiano Blanco
Sorel Mizzi
Katja Thater
Mats Iremark
Julian Thew
Johan Storakers
Ilari Sahamies

Spotted at party:
Annette Obrestad
Jan Heitmann
Marcel Luske
Woman in underwear wrapped in snake
Julian Thew (so good I named him twice)
Benjamin Gallen

Maybe it's time to take some pictures.

Er, the last 2 tables look a bit odd. I think it's unlikely that table 21 will start 4 handed and table 22 heads up. Expect the vacant spaces to be populated with last minute registrations.

Incidentally there is some confusion happening during registration. Jen is out there investigating (at least that's the line she fed me, for all I know she is in the kitchen rubbing bacon grease into her hair with an expression of ecstacy etched onto her face)

We've been told that play is still 30 minutes or so away from starting....

Icy Katja Thater has had a good start to the first level, just now attracting a horde of journalists as she raised her opponent (probably but not certainly Stefan Hachmeister) to 4,500 from 1,600 with a board reading Jh Ks Qc 3s...  A very long dwell during which many many photos were taken - and who was I to be the odd one out - and then he passed, reluctantly.  I think an Ac was shown, for some reason.

Good news for Graham Clarkson fans, too - he related this happy tale of early chips to me as I was passing through the room on the slightly overwhelming First Reconnaissance...

He picked up 9c 9d, raised it to 200, and found a re-raiser in position.  He called the 600 and flopped J-9-4.  "I quite liked that."  So he bet out a sneaky 700, was raised to 2,600 and said he was happy against a probable overpair: call.  The turn brought an 8d which also brought a possible flush - now it went check-check... he wasn't so delighted with that, but he was delighted to see a blank river and A-8 in his opponent's hand...

Here he is, not letting his delight show, next to an immaculately-coiffed dealer lady.

Dario Minieri is raising a little, a lot (if that makes any sense).  Midway through level one, a standard hand would start:  Minieri raise to 150.  Five callers.  Minieri bet out 575... and that's where the differences in hands would start to emerge, as people took exciting advantage of their full range of options (call, raise and fold).

Elsewhere, Monte Carlo Finalist Steve Jelinek (here pictured in stark profile - intentional, of course) has been "bluffed off a pot, after flopping quad Aces in an unraised pot."  He is not talking about the same pot, here.

"I only won 600," he lamented, over the ghosts of all those Aces... his opponent in that hand (probably) piped up there to say, "You are greedy!  You want all my money!"  He didn't confirm or deny this.

Good grief, what a Player List. Thanks from all of us at home for taking the time to type up that lot, it must have taken an age, especially with those German names in such abundance. Are they real names, or just anagrams?

Regular Updates please on....

Tobias Reinkemeier

Andre Schutzenhofer

Gareth Teatum. (Is that Red-Dog in disguise?)

Peyman Mohammeadzedeh

I thank you.

None of the above have deviated too far from their initial starting stack.

Here is the intriguingly named Peyman Mohammadzadeh. He saw me creeping up with my camera and immediately struck what he deemed to be a "man of steel" pose.

He is currently on 9,000 or so...

Gareth Teatum looks like he may have increased his starting stack marginally.

He was involved in a hand as I watched his table. His diminuative table partner( in physical size only I'm sure) Sebastian Zink, who is becoming a regular at the EPTs now, made a smallish raise from the small blind. Gareth called from the big blind.

The flop came Kd Jh 7h.

Sebastian checked, and Gareth now bet out 3-400. Sebastian called.

The turn was the 4s.

Check, check.

The river was the Ks and again both players checked.

Gareth turned over Td Js for 2nd pair, whilst a releived Zink tabled Qs Qh to take down the pot.

Here he is raking the pot in off Gareth, with perhaps just s hint of smugness that his underpair to the board was good...

Andre Shutzenhofer, is aiming to take down the best Paul Parker dress-a-like competition. Here is is looking flamboyent, but he'll need to add some more colour to his waistcoats if he is to emulate the GUKPT's snappiest dresser...

Again he is not far from his initial starting stack of 10k here.

I have included the dealer in the shot, so you can marvel at the sartorial elegance of the diligent men and women who are distributing the cards today...

Finally...

Tobias Reinkemeier. If any of his family see this photo, DON'T PANIC! Tobias is fine, perfectly healthy and definitely not in the middle stages of a stroke. (Blame my amateurish photographic skills for any suggestion otherwise!)

He doesn't look to have got toooo invovled yet and although he kept his chips well covered, I would say he was still in the area of 8-10k....

Claudio Rinaldi takes a chunk of chips from Dario Minieri, in a hand which I saw from the turn, when blue (1k chips) started getting waved around...
The board:  7c 3c 2h 3h.  Rinaldi bet out 600, and faced a raise to 2,000.  He called.
River: 6c  Now Rinaldi check-called the multicoloured 3,475 bet from Minieri - and his Jc Jd was good.  I saw the 7h and something else small and flushdrawy in Dario's hand which was shown down and then promptly mucked.

Do they still have all the free food and free booze like last year?

They put sausage in everything.

Yes, there are stacks and stacks of chocolate bars, bottles of juice as far as the eye can see, and plentiful supplies of fresh coffee and tea.

Jen came in a while ago boasting about finding this chocolate bar. She was sooo smug about it.

Naturally this aroused my competitive streak so I sought out and found a clearly superior confectionary product.

The internet connection has become somewhat imtermittent so apologies for any delays in coverage.

News is in that the explosive Italian Dario Minieri is out. More details as and when we have them...

Alexander Kuzmin was seen passing to a Carter Gill's check raise on a 3c 4d 4s 6s board. He dwelt and dwelt for ages before folding, suggesting he had a tough decision, perhaps with an overpair.

"Good fold" Gill told him "I had pocket 3s."

Maybe he did....but then again...

Jorg Engels, who had become rather short was seen getting his 4k or so stack in preflop versus Peter Peterson.

Holding a mighty pair of Kings, he found himself dominating Peter's 9 s.

Once the dust had settled and a board of Q-J-A-J-T had transpired, Jorg had doubled through to roughly 8k.

"Nice hand" Peterson told him, in the conventional fashion. Jorg's response lacked length, but made up for it in veracity. "Yes it was"

Sebastian Zink, who is now perched at the lofty heights of well, around 13k, was seen betting the turn of An A-K-5-J board, getting Jan-Christophe Von Halle to fold.

Zink is looking very laid back and chilled, as he slowly but surely increases his stack...

Mazhar Nawab is here, playing only his second EPT event, and therefore showing no surprise at the slow rate of player elimination thus far.  "I don't know how it's supposed to go..." he mused, before filling us in on some hands which helped his stack increase to its current 22k.  "I played Aces under the gun, but thought - I'm not going to limp here - raised, and everybody passed."  It turns out one of his bigger pots involved the Ac Kc, which he saw a two-club flop with against an agressive player in the blinds, who kept betting - 3.5k on the turn - but then check-folded the undangerous river.  "I think actually he was on a flush draw too," mused Maz, "And if it had come I'd have got the rest."

Other chips came from flopping the nut flush and just calling once, but scaring off his opponent with a bet on the turn which was designed to look weak but actually sent the short stack's cards into the muck.  Calmly chatting with Julian in the break, he also showed us some sunglasses which, "Some Italian guy on my table gave me for some reason."

Hi guys

Any more updates on Graham (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=159) Clarkson (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=159) much appreciated!

Cheers

Mr. Clarkson has dropped to 7,500 after reaching the dizzying heights of 16k not long ago.  A couple of big pots, most notably a race against an all-in-pre short stack where his AK failed to hit against pocket Tens, and he's lost a few.  But at least he had a nice dinner which, as he put it, "Was a deal at €70."  With no sarcasm whatever in his voice.  At all.

Also: Mike McDonald -- 20,500
Julian Thew -- 12,000

Some random counts....

Matthias Guetermann      6700
Andres Rahm Mats      8200
Johannes Korsar      7675
Darius Paszkiewicz      30500
Yngne Anderberg      23000
Tommy Hansen      11300
Sjoerd Bos      12200
Roberto Kay      10300
Christian Toboc      9850
Dan Walley      19500
Daniel Ruiter      9500
Diego Perez Marco      7200
Szikrai Istvan      12500
Redmond Lee      35000

Gareth Teatum is up to 17k or so.

He was involved in a hand as I watched his table. He raised UTG to 650 on 100 200 and found a caller on the button in Henrik Brockmann.

The flop fell Tc 4c Ts

Gareth languidly reached into his stack and bet out 650 again. Henrik thought for a few moments and called.

The turn came the 6s.

Check by Gareth, check by Henrik.

The river was the Jc and Gareth quickly checked. Henrik wasn't in the mood for swelling the pot further either as he turned over his pocket 5s.
Gareth looked a tad apologetic as he turned over his A-J which had got there on the river. I doubt Henrik was too concerned as he still holds an enviable mountain of chips.

Mika Paasonen is OUT.

Sketchy details of his exit were reported to me but it seems as though, after his 3.5k bet was raised to 10k by Jens Vortmann on a 8h 6h 8c, he decided to push for another 14k with Kh Ks, but found Vortmann had hit the flop hard, holding A-8...

....no miracle King and as Vortmann had him covered Mika exits to the rail.

Frustratingly, I've not been able to access the internet for sometime now, so I have comandeered Jen's computer whilst she is away (shhhh, don't tell her....)

Anyway, I am the bearer of bad news.

Julian Thew was just involved in an allin coup. He had previously lost a big pot to Ramzi Jellasi, so found himself somewhat short. He saw a three way flop with Kc Qc and it fell Ac 6c 2d. He checked from early position, and saw a bet and a call in front of me. Sensing this was his opportunity he now re-raised half his stack with his nut flush draw, but was met with an allin re-raise...

Being committed he called quickly, only to find his opponent holding a smaller flush draw, but also having paired the deuce. A blank turn and river ensued, meaning mateyboy's measly pair of deuces was sufficient to eliminate William Hill's goldenboy from the competition. Julian looked a little tired and disappointed as he exited the casino, but I'm sure his bad run won't last too long. Good game sir.

As soon as I get access to my computer and the internet I'll be posting up a pic of Mike Mcdonald for his adoring fan (s?)

Here we have an admittedly "rather lucky" Steve Jelinek, whose 29k stack benefitted enormously from one player's exit (ah, so sadly inevitable in a poker tournament).  It turns out that the player whom Jelinek referred to as 'aggressive' min-raised on the button to 400.  Steve then made it 1,600 to go in the small blind, holding Jd Js.  Agressive Button re-raised to 4k and Steve shoved.  The length of dwell before he was called led him to believe that his hand might actually be good... but no - he was up against Kc Kd.  With one Jack folded, it was up to the case Jack to pop out on the river.  Which it did.

His neighbour in the photo is Kasper Nielsen, I believe, who was actually the guy in the hand waaay back at the start of the tournament when Katja Thater as-good-as-shoved on that all-broadway board... Like little pieces of a poker puzzle, that Ac that was shown was one of two Aces cracked, he believes, by Ms. Thater.  He got away from them, though, and is still in with around 9,000.

Christian Toboc is OUT at the hands of Daniel Ruiter...like so...

It all went in on a flop of Qs Jd Td, as Toboc bet out 2,100 and faced a raise to 11,500 (putting him in).  He thought for a good long time before eventually saying, "If you've got the A-K you've got the A-K," and shoving it in with the bottom end: 9d 8s.
Daniel Ruiter showed Ts Th...and they both stood up to watch as the clock counted down to the break and the turn and river came 3s...Qc.

A bit of a wince from Toboc, but a handshake later and we're down another table here in Casino Hohensyburg, which is filled with cash players as soon as the tournament chips are off the felt...

I take it all back Dena. No longer will you be named after venemous spiders and other deadly wildlife, for as soon as you wished Steve good luck, he not only hits a one out to boost his stack up to 29k, but I joined his table shortly afterwards, and he was happily raking in yet another big pot.

I joined the action on the river of an Ahrt 6c 9h 9c 3h board.

His opponent had shoved allin for roughly 7k which was a pot size bet and Steve, who had him confortably covered, announced "I call" very quickly with his flush of Qh Th.

His now chip-less opponent insta-mucked, leaving the tournament wiht his card before I had a chance to get more information on him. Steve however was happily gathering his new assortment of chips of many colours, telling the table, "I didn't need that...I'd've called him with an ace!"

He now has a big grin and a very healthy 35k or so...

Giorgio Salemi just doubled through off Thierry V D Berg.

On a J - Q - 4 flop, van der Berg shoved, perhaps somewhat impetuously with 7-7, only to find Salemi was in no mood to release his powerful pair of cowboys as he called his final 6,000 off. The turn and river were both '6's, meaning Salemi was up to 16k or so whilst Thierry was looking a little more wobbly at less than 10k.

I have pictures of the duelling pair which I would dearly love to share with you, but cannot at present. Soon my pretties, soon.

An update on my son - Chris Rossiter would be appreciated - it's his 2nd EPT so far, last seen at 2007 final.

I'm sorry for the delay. I have a picture of someone who may well be Chris...he is sitting in wha tlooks like the allocated seat but without his card. I snapped him to double check, but cannot upload pics at the moment.

If the lad in question is Chris, he is currently on 9k. This is fairly far below the current average of 17k but it is only 150 300, so given the generous structure, it is still a workable stack.

I'll try and get the pics up as soon as is felinely possible.

Mike McDonald, despite trailing behind the leaders by 20k or so isn't shy about getting his chips in... just now he raised preflop to 1,100 with two callers.
Flop: Ad 7h 7c.  The big blind (Andreas Sarling, I think) fired out 2,100, but passed with an attitude of chagrin to McDonald's speedy raise to 4,500... Mike showed the Kd at this juncture.  I am sure that meant something to them both, but I'm not sure I could crack the code just then and there...
_______________________________

Elsewhere people's tournaments are on the line with increasing frequency...like Richard Fohrenbach, who made it 1,125 to go preflop, only for small blind Giorgio Salemi to re-raise to 3,150.  Fohrenbach asked for a count, and seeing that he was covered, but not by a whole lot, shoved the rest in.  He was rewarded with a fold and a no-flop pot of decent size.

But it wasn't to work for Anthony Chatelain, whose 9d 9s (all in pre) were eliminated by an Ac Qs which caught one of those overcards.  Also out (a while ago) went Sebastian Ruthenberg and about 18 others in the last level, though there are still 107 players heading into the final two hours' play.

Redmond Lee is currently one of the chip leaders in the tournament. He is apparently a young, london player who is well known online, having earned a fearsome reputation by winning stars sunday million as well as playing 10/20 NLHE cash regularly.

Jen asked "Are you sure it's Redmond Lee, not Lee Redmond?"....a reasonable sounding question...till you meet the REAL Lee Redmond, none other than the owner of the longest fingernails IN THE WORLD!

I'm thinking this girl might have no problem raking in the pots, but she might find herself scratching around for chips sometimes. She probably plays some pots too cute(icle) too.

Okay I'll stop now before Jen(and the rest of you) throw up.

Another one chasing info on Mr Clarkson if poss.

Thanks

I'm afraid I bring bad news to the hordes of fans following Mr Clarkson. Me and Jen encountered him in the area betwixt press room and poker floor, looking a tad dismayed.

He has had an up and down time of it. After a good start he lost some chips making a move with 7-7 on a K 8 x flop, only to run into an immovable pair of Aces.

The chirpy Graham was unperturbed by this however and swiftly spun his 7.5k  stack back up to a mighty 25k within one orbit (Thewy's yo-yo tag might be under threat if graham continues to play like that..)

The key hand for Graham occurred on 200 400 when a serial limper, Sjoerd Bos, whose play thus far had been donktastic questionable, called on the button. The small blind completed and Graham looked down to find a pair of Tens in the BB. "I made a weird raise at that point" he told us, "raising to 5k, as it was enough to set Bos in."

Bos however passed whilst Graham found the small blind re-raising allin...Feeling a little sick about this, Graham nonetheless felt like his opponent was weak enough to call, despite it being an additional 15k, and it proved a good call as he tabled K-Q to Graham's T-T. His coin flipping ability deserted him on this occasion however as an instant Q and a board full of non ten blanks ensued, meaning the monster 30k+ pot headed the wrong way.

Graham still had 2k back and doubled up with 9-9 versus K-Q shortly afterwards. It was a bittersweet moment, with echoes of the KQ TT flip, as the board came with 2 Ts. He won the flip this time though and now back up to 4-5k or so, he had a shot at getting back into it. He raised UTG with A-T and was called, seeing an A-8-4 flop. His opponent bet 1k and Graham now re-raised an additional 2k, leaving 1k back...... "I felt he was weak so I did my best to get him to call"....

His plan worked to perfection as his opponent called, and on the 8 turn Graham and his opponent got his last 1k in, only to find he had suffered a cruel beat with his opponent holding K-8.

A shame that his EPT adventure is over, Graham nonetheless seemed to have enjoyed his time and felt that he played well. Jen has a picture of the perennially smiling Graham to post up shortly.

Yes - here he was, still cheerful in defeat, but cursing Serial Limper (mildly) and big buy-in tournaments in general.  "I'd rather play eight €1k events..." Well, stop qualifying for them online then!

Pictured (a) reliving the sad moments of defeat

(b) Remembering he's a naturally cheerful guy with a whole exciting week in Dortmund to look forward to

Graham was disappointed to be knocked out in the first day, not just because it signalled the end to his efforts to become an EPT champ but also as the satellite package he had won to get here, meant he would be stuck in Dortmund, which is a fairly quiet industrial town, for the next few days.

Jen, ever the unwitting comedian, tried to console him...

Graham "Yeh I'm stuck here for the next few days, not sure what I'll do...."

Jen : "Don't do all your money on roulette. Have a walk round the forest!"

[This creepy forest...

...]

Hmmmm, so his choices(according to Jen) are...gamble a shed load of money OR get savaged by the wild bears/ evil blair witch lookalikes within the forest

I doubt the Samaritans will be asking for a copy of Jen's CV anytime soon :)

Maz Nawab's stack has shot up last level courtesy of Steve Jelinek, who's still on a respectable 23k but had been on a lot more, and had something of the steam about him going into the most recent (and timely) break...

Maz had made a raise to 1,200 preflop, called by the small blind and Steve, in the big blind, with 3h 5h.

Flop: Th 3s 2h  Check to Maz, who bet 3k, seeing off the guy in the middle.  Steve raised another 5k, and then found Maz moving all in for a further 16k on top.  This was quite a chunky bet, and Steve went for it, surprised to find 9d 9s in Nawab's hand, and displeased to find said hand held up and gave him a stack challenging the leaders'.  "I can't believe he did that with Nines.  On a Ten high flop.  I am favourite against an overpair..." One gets the feeling he wasn't happy with how that hand went at all.  But he's still in it, unlike 117 other guys.

In the closing minutes of the day's play, a 100k pot changes hands, eliminating one player and giving Cyrille Chabot around a 110k stack.

The hands involved might be slightly surprising...a small blind AQ vs. a big blind KQ.  A Queen high flop saw a 10k bet out from Chabot, and a flat call from his 45k-stacked opponent.  A blank turn, and Chabot check-raised his opponent all in, who then made the call for a further 25,000(!).  No miracle King and we've gone from a tournament with two levels (those on 40kish and those on 20kish) to a tournament with a definite far-out-in-front chip leader.

Peyman Mohammedzadeh, the interestingly named player who Tikay has taken a close interest in (amusingly!) has nurtured his stack quietly upwards until the point where he is now amongst the chip leaders with 45k or so. He was involved in a hand as I joined his table.

He had led out for 1500 on a Ks 8s 5c 8d turn, against a player who infuriatingly had piled his chips over his card, meaning I couldn't see who it was (although picture to follow).

Mateyboy raised the minimum to 3k, which Peyman, after much eye twitching beneath his opaque shades, decided to call.

A 9s fell on the river and Peyman checked quickly only to see Mateyboy equally quickly slide five 1k chips over the line. More eye twitching from Peyman, and ultimately he passed...

Mateyboy showed he wasn't messing around by flipping A-A, whilst Peyman spun around to tell his friend about his great pass with K-Q (apparently...)

Peyman boasting to the rail...

Mateyboy (or should that be Gray-teyboy) sweeping up his chips happily...

Another player who has piqued the interest of some of our readers, Sebastian Zink, is OUT.

Eliminated at the hands of Andreas Sarling who made a good call with Q-4 on a board of Q-J-6 against the aggressive Sebastian, whose J-9 proved no good once a Q and 4 fell on the turn and river.

Here he is, drinking some consolatory Red Bull after losing all his chips...

Andreas looked to have roughly 20k after this pot.

Steve Jelinek looked to be down to roughly 15-16k 30 minutes before the end of play, on a bit of a downward spiral after his earlier meteoric rise to near the chip lead...

Mats Iremark looked well placed as I passed his table...with an impressive 45k or so...

We have reached the end of the day. We won't have full and accurate chip counts until 11am tomorrow but we shall post these up as soon as we have them.

Some players' fortunes have been bolstered, whilst other players' dreams of EPT glory and bathing in asses milk lie ruined and in tatters. We've had tears, we've had shouts, we've had beats and we've had some cracking poker...

Before we retire to our hotel though and you guys head off to bed ready to join us tomorrow (you know you want to), please spare a thought for these guys.

Like the poker players there were many of them to start with, but now only a few brave survivors remain, battling against the odds to survive. They face a foe larger in size and strength who will stop at nothing to consume them. Salute these guys (imagine solemn military music playing in the background) for their bravery has no parallel. I give you....the gummi bears...

 ;stickaforkinme;

We'll be back tomorrow folks. Seeyou there ;)
