Title: EPT Dublin - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2005, 01:37:09 PM
Hello and welcome back to the Merrion, Merrion Square - the last four tables are *all in one room* - down in the basement...

We just find the poker room more comfortable to work from than the poker Tent (or it could already be full, and outside) so we'll be running back and forth from an unused table.

Good luck to all near-finalists (money goes down to 27th place)....

Good afternoon all.

Good luck to all playing.

Good luck to Tikay and Jen on the running around - aren't your legs sore from yesterday?

Title: Re: EPT Dublin - FINAL DAY
Post by: tikay on October 30, 2005, 01:52:21 PM
Thanks Trace & Ponte.

Legs sore? Nah, we can cope.

Ariston? Not seen any sign of him, he disappeared late afternoon yesterday, never to be seen again. Butt Malc M stayed to the bitter end, bless him.

Now, some early exits.

hi guys, well done on yesterdays efforts, always appreciated. Is skalie the only badbeat rep left?

Title: Re: EPT Dublin - FINAL DAY
Post by: tikay on October 30, 2005, 01:57:44 PM
Remarkably, in 40 minutes of play, the field has already reduced to 28.

Jen, whose tetchy because she can't get a signal on her computer, is down in The Dungeon trying to find out who's been busted, & who's got the chips.

We DO know that Luca Pagano is out, & he looks VERY down about it, I believe he had a big hand busted. bAnd Joep Durkstra is OUT too.

Once Jen gets a signal, I'll go & get some pics, & Jen will keep you updated with counts & stuff.

Surinder Sunar just exited in 29th, on the steal with, apparently, 6 9 which was called by Patrick McFadden's AK.

This puts the dungeon on the bubble - and all four tables are hand for hand which is a tad slow.

Post by: tikay on October 30, 2005, 01:59:42 PM

Meds - I think skslie (Jon Kalmar) IS the sole badbeat survivor.

Title: Re: EPT Dublin - FINAL DAY

is pompom still in ?

Title: Re: EPT Dublin - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2005, 02:02:02 PM
Joep Durkstra's exit happened in two unfortunate goes - his A7 ran into A6, and then his AK into Brigitta Johanssen's AQ.  Both undercards spiked the river, apparently, and he's headed into the cash area.

Luca Pagano had  Kd Kh which was unlucky to find Skalie's  Ah As

Also OUT (wow it's been only a half hour) is Greg Amoils, sitting in a cash game across from us.

Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2005, 02:15:16 PM
The expected lull in proceedings meant I could get a little closer for a few counts:

Ray Colman (exitonly)  40,000
Jon Kalmar (Skalie)     250,000
Brigitta Johanssen       34,000
Joe Rafferty              125,000
Michael O'Sullivan       180,000
Michael Greco            150,000
Andreas Hagen          100,000 (He was my pick from yesterday to win at 45 runners - ask Antesup if you don't believe)#
Stuart Forsyth            50,000
Noah Boeken              60,000
David Pomroy             145,000
Andy Black                56,000
Jeffrey Bensinger        110,000

Guys, a fantastic job yesterday..took me ages to catch up with it today

I'm funking for Jim Reid today, so any news would be great. Is he still in?

Almost unnoticed  yesterday Tikay said that Mr Reid came from Bedford or "somewhere equally awful"   :redcard:

where would that be, ILKESTON?

Unfortunatley it can't be turned off, i thought someone was going to change the code for them but obviously they haven't got around to it yet.

Apologies for the quietness - there are extreme problems with the connection here - although others seem to be able to use the wireless in the dungeon, we, sadly, cannot and so have to put in  little posts whenever a mobile phone signal comes up, which is about once every 10 minutes.

The 10-minute break seems to be quite timely - here's some news in reverse order:

19th place was Stuart Forsyth
20th place - Andy Black, making a stand with  Ad 7d against  Kc Tc.  Two clubs came on the flop, but it was the King on the river which brought Andy's comeback to an end

Donnacha O'Dea OUT after an unlucky AK vs A10 affair

The Final will still be at the RDS at 7.30pm this evening.

FULL chip counts for every player are imminent, from Jen.

18th place finisher - Patrick Martenssen, who raced his 55 against AK with no result.  He wins €7,900.

Here are all but a couple of the remaining stacks (it's getting very crowded down there):

Ray Colman        50,000
Jon Kalmar        350,000
Joe Rafferty       63,000
Michael O'Sullivan  170,000
Henrik Olander     320,000
Jim Reid             150,000 (after a double up from Henrik)
Michael Greco     110,000
Andreas Hagen   130,000 (go my Tip!!!)
Noah Boeken       70,000
Mats Gavatin       140,000
David Pomroy     200,000
Jeffrey Bensinger  155,000

Christoph Baunach is OUT - having been the short stack for positively ages, his last stand with  3c 3d was called by David Pomroy's  Js Qc.  The board came with two Jacks upon it - end of story.  €7,900 for the charming Christoph, whose brother sweated him All day and All night yesterday.  Very nice guys - and there's a rumour that this was Christoph's first big tourney - congratulations to him.

A further technical interuption I am afraid, but back again now.

We hsave chip counts for everyone, but while Jen is struggling with her connection, I can tell you that Skalie is on 300k. Mats Gavatin has 230k. Jeffrey Bensinger, The American, 140k, P. Haslow 150k.

Oh, nearly forgot. Our Chip leader, with 350k, is.......Mr Pomroy,

DPOMMO goes on a spree - he just knocked out (19(?)year old) Ray Coburn - apologies for wrong spelling earlier...

Ray moved in with  Ah 9s and found David Pomroy with Queens.  He exited just after Irish followee Michael Slevin (15th), which Mike and Tom are saddened by, even though they just found out they were meant to be following him a few hours ago.

So 13 players left, and a pretty exciting atmosphere down in the basement.  Ariston and Dubai are perched on the window ledges behind one of the tables.  I think a pic might be on its way.

Deck in face double up news now - Michael Greco moves in with  Ac Js, only to find  Kh Ks against him... luckily the Ace popped out right away building his chips back up a bit, still under 100k.

Oh no - Andreas Hagen is OUT!  After Noah pushed all-in he called for a little less with 33, finding Noah on A9.  The nine came out on the turn though, and I'm sure the Norwegians are upset.

And Michael Greco's AA gets a double through from QQ...(see above)  close to 200k now.

The Pommo support group is rather large and excitable (both here and online ;)     )  But he doesn't look like he needs encouragement, he's clearly enjoying himself, and holding on to his big stack.

We are playing again, and down to 10, Jen is trying to find out who's gone. But the clock has been stopped again - I can see via a plasma screen - so I guess they are hand for hand, but Jen will be back with news in a mo.

The two tables are in The Dungeon, which is a weird decision, as it's seriously cramped down there, & well-nigh impossible to access the tables. I'm off to fight my way to these tables shortly for pics of all the players. Can't wait for us to get across to the RDS tonight, where I imagine there will be a lot more room, & a lot less peeps (many will stay here & play the rebuyfest) & we can do a better job.

Now, to top it off, we've been evicted from our 1st floor office, so we gotta relocate to The Dungeon if we can get a signal down there.

STOP PRESS - 9 left! Final Table will be 8, so just one to go.

Quick elimination news now - in a flurry of barely visible action, Noah Boeken OUT in 11th, followed by a resigned Skalie in 10th.  They collect €11,900 each.  There is but one table left, and when ninth is out we all up and move to Venue Two.

what is one of them queen? i wonder what the ages of the finalists are. it would be interesting to have the average. people say no limit texas holdem takes minutes to learn, a lifetime to master. if this is the case the young stars like pomo how good will they be in 40 years? would doyle brunsen have been any better if he had online poker to play in his youth?? if i was an older pro with a mortgage still i would be quaking in my boots at the sight of the youth army taking down tournys left right and centre. o yeah good luck to greco also, makes up for a poor showing on the poker den?

I have to say - HOORAH for ethernet - this is less like pulling teeth and more like having them polished.

You will get more updates, of a fuller nature, for the final.  A bit of scene setting before the Promised Buffet materialises - imagine a huge kind of stately home's library, with the kind of TV stage thingy with its lighting rig in the middle like a boxing ring, and some spectator seating right by the table on all sides (which I will be sneaking into if it looks emptyish still when they kick off).  They are just doing the Placing - whereby the players' chips are stacked on the table, which should be done in about half an hour.

Hi Karabiner, well yes, it has been stessful rather than hard today, with bad internet connections all the way. And not enough help truth to tell, though Jens been heroine-ic.

OK, lets try &set the scene.

Here's the TV table right now, with John Duthie mending something. It's very much in the tradition of Televised (recorded) TV Finals that no matter  how much notice you give the TV peeps, they are never ready, always fiddling interminably with wires. TV recording must be one of THE most inefficient industries in the world.

Hmmmm. Having shot my first video this week (nothing too flash, but it's a nice landmark all the same in my switch from journo to ad-world tvm), I have to disagree Tikay, last thing you want to do is get half way thru and find out the light's turned against you. Tv techs do a fantastic job.

Hey Anna, liked your 'blonde rep at the BFWCOP post' does Tikay know you were referring to him ;D ;D

BTW, it's taken me 7 months to rack up about twice as many posts as you've managed in one w/end!!!

Just spoken to Dubai and man of the moment Dpommo on the phone,

I quote, sunday says "your guarenteed 30k euros mate", pommo says "oh i dont have a clue what the payouts are, you know the only place i care about".

seems like hes really going for it!!!!!! COME ON SON!!!!!!

Also when i ask Dubai how big tonights session is going to be he replies "Ahhh dont know mate, might just go to some bars and drink a few glasses of wine"

LOL @ Dubai. What a lyer! I was on the recieving end of a few 'Dubai rounds' when he won 7k at the EPT London, lets put it this way, he likes to make sure you have at least TEN drinks on the go at any one point

I think the Final Eight are being interviewed... and the hole card cameras, other cameras and seating of the final checked, which could in no way have been done earlier.  Having said that, Thank You to Pokerstars and the EPT and everyone with any kind of authority for the buffet which was great; I've eaten about a cow in bitesize chunks on sticks.  Nice.

We will agree to differ there divaflava. It ought to be within their competence to be ready on time, no? Just ONCE? Anyway, we'll never, I fear, agreee on that.

So, 20 minutes on, and 30 minutes past the long-advertised start time. let's see how the efficient TV peeps are getting on shall we?

There are free drinks here, which work on a rather odd system - you receive three PokerStars poker chips, which are all good for a beverage of your choice.  There is also a raffle, one prize of which is a full set of PokerStars chips.  I dread to think what will happen after the draw.

Title: Re: EPT Dublin - FINAL DAY
Post by: tikay on October 30, 2005, 08:31:40 PM

Latest estimate of start time? Well THIS was taken 60 seconds ago. Bear in mind when the Finalists take their seats, the TV peeps have to faff about & wire them for sound & stuff. So that's another 15 mins after they arrive......Who's doling the Interviews, someone asks? Sunset & Vine, for the "proper" TV recording pre & post. And 425 will do the "post" interviews as well. So, asks Rhow, "take us through your exit hand"......"Grrrr....."

Something's happening!  The players have taken their seats, and they may very well be about to deal in a couple of minutes!  I'm going to get ringside for a minute, after the warmup lady tells the audience that they "have to be even more fabulous than last year" and cheer appropriately.  Expect a 30 second lag in action to update as we're not allowed to sit in the stands this time.

No, there is no set date for when this will be televised. I imagine it's a good few months down the line by the time it's been edited.

Her's a rather blurry pic of the Final Table, which jen cheekily snuck up & took. We are not allowed near the table now, on the orders of those who must be obeyed, the TV boys.

There have been a few flops, and even, just now, a three-way pot which saw a raggy board get all the way to the river, with Henrik Olander taking it with two pair.  He also won a couple of other pots, but there have been no major confrontations.  I thought I heard that Jim Reid was all-in a minute ago, but everyone folded and he's still in, albeit still short.

Michael O'Sullivan out in 8th place - he made a preflop raise to 30,000, and when Henrik Olander re-raised, he pushed all in for the whole 150,000, or thereabouts.  Henrik called fairly speedily with his  Jd Jc, and found Michael with  Ac Th.  The flop came  2c 2s Jh, the turn  7d and the river was irrelevant - he was already standing up and shaking hands.  He wins €29,800.

Title: Re: EPT Dublin - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on October 30, 2005, 09:47:21 PM
Jim Reid doubles up (with a little luck) holding  Kd Qd, against Joe Rafferty's  Qs Qh.

The board came  Js 6d Tc As 9d, and so he's back in it with 160,000 or so.  Nothing like free drinks to generate applause.  The atmosphere is really good, actually, with full spectator seats (I notice a certain half of Antesup has snuck in there) and lots of support for all the players.

This rather nice young lady is the EPT's answer to Shana Hiatt. But there is a difference - THIS girl has brains, good social skills, and an interview technique the equal of which I have yet to hear any interviewer, male or female, equal. She asks incisive questions, original angles, & is in no way sychophantic. She'll go all the way. Or should I say, she'll go to the very top of her trade.

Michael Greco OUT in 7th -  He got it all-in with  Jh Js against  Qd Jd, which sounds good, until you know that the flop was  Qc 4d 4c.  According to eyewitnesses (Mike Lacey's voice, although clear, doesn't carry too well over here) it was all-in on the flop, propelling Henrik Olander into the chip lead.  Now that my other Scandie busted, my money's on him now :)

Counts, as estimated by Mike Lacey, stand-in TD...

David Pomroy    400,000
Jim Reid           190,000
Joe Rafferty      400,000
Henrik Olander  770,000
Pete Haslam     210,000
Mats Gavatin     470,000

DPommo hasn't really been getting involved in the early skirmishes.  The main movers so far have been Henrik and Joe.  I think fully accurate chips are on their way, but as he went to the trouble...

Now some special news for you, while the players are on break.

Make a note of these dates in your diary.

November 8th, 9th & 10th.

Those three dates are earmarked for a special Freeroll on blonde - with the winner getting a seat to the Monte Carlo Millions. That's $25,000 worth of seat......

It's "semi-exclusive", in that entry will be restricted to blondeites, & two other poker "establishments.  Don't even try guessing who they are, because you'll never get it in a month of Sundays.

It will be a Freeroll, in that entry will be free, but it WILL be a rebuy, for those that wanna chase the dream.

Details are being finalised right now, but it's booked to happen on those 3 nights. Two qualifying nights, with the Final two tables asembling on November 10th.

More details soon on blonde.

There you go Camel, that's your seat sorted.

ok Tikay, I'm gonna ask the silly question...

is this via the net or a b & m cardroom for the Monte Carlo ££$$$

if live - is it near London?

Nice one tikay keep them coming

and good work from all of you

Jim Reid is the 6th place finisher, winning €49,600 -

Jim raised to 20k on the button, called by Henrik on the big blind.  The flop came:  8h Qc Kc.  Henrik checked, Jim bet 50k, Henrik immediately moved all-in and Jim almost as immediately called all-in.  Their hands?  You might well ask:  Henrik:  Ah 7c, Jim:   Tc 2c.  The turn and river were  Ad and  6h  - and Jim was out having missed his flush draw.

Not a lot of flops being seen right now.  The last three hands I saw were like this:  1) 4-way limper pot picked up by Joe Rafferty 2) UTG limp by Henrik dissuaded by an all-in move from Pete Haslam 3) Mats raised to 20k, was re-raised by DPommo on the button to 80k, and pushed all in for more than David's stack.  After a big dwell David folded, leaving him with just under 300,000, it looks like.

Short stack still Pete Haslam, leader Henric.  I have been spelling his name with a 'k' but the sheet of Information from PokerStars says otherwise and I'm inclined to agree with them as they've been pretty accurate all the way through, and just interviewed the guys, too.  So Henric it is.

PETE =Pete Haslam

Pete Haslam doubles up - in a slightly strange pot which developed as follows:   Pete Moved all-in for his 91,000, David, er, Pom thought for a minute and then re-raised all-in over the top for the full 300k, getting rid of Joe and heads up with Pete - who had  Ac Kh.  David showed  Tc 9c, and the board came  8h 6c 3s 4d Ad to give him a bit of slack.

may seem like a crazy move but what you have to appreciate that is the way pommo plays , ok easy to get to the final and sit back to get a good placing but that will be the last thing on his mind he will have seen it as a good opportunity to knock someone out with two live cards - he will have played the same way all thruogh the comp so dificultto alter styles now - especially as playing that way has got him there in the first place

Joe Rafferty doubles David Pomroy up in rather spectacular fashion:

David, now short stacked, saw a flop with Joe of  Qs 8c 6s.  David, who'd raised preflop, bet 100k, effectively committing himself, and called when Joe moved in with his set of 6s.  David showed  Ah 9d, and looked to be drawing almost dead.  Until the turn brought  7c and the river  Td  - the runner-runner he needed to double up and nearly knock out Joe.

A couple of hands later he doubled tiny-stacked Joe up with his  5c 6s to Joe's  Qd 6d, but he still has less than 100k, to David's 460k

Joe Rafferty doubles up again, to 140,000 with the  Kd 9d, against raiser Pete Haslam's  6c 7c.  The crowd give him a good cheer as he goes for the comeback....

Title: Re: EPT Dublin - FINAL DAY
Post by: Djinn on October 31, 2005, 12:18:31 AM
The crowd are still exciteable, with the notable exception of at least one who is clearly asleep and will look funny on TV.  You can tell because when they changed dealer and introduced him as 'Jack' there were lots of shouts of "Come on Jack!" from the benches.  They'll cheer for anyone and everyone.  Great.

Henrik has been taking quite a few pots with preflop raises, and now David is doing it too.  Looks like he's taken his foot off the brake and now has enough chips to put pressure on the leader.

Bad news 1808, Pete Haslam OUT in 5th place -

He had become the second shortest stack and made a stand with an all-in with  5s 8s, which Henric almost immediately called, with  Kd Js.  No hit for either of them meant that Henric's King was a winning card, and Pete takes 5th and €59,500.

Joe Rafferty is OUT in 4th place, receiving €69,500 -

He moved all in for about 105k with  As 4d, but his doubling spree was ended by Mats Gavatin who called on the big blind with  Kc 8d.

Flop:  3s 2d 6h
Turn:   8h
River:   4h

And he left in a respectable, if slightly unlucky, fourth.

David:   As Js
Henric:     Kh 8c

I hear it on good authority (and what better is there than half of Antesup?) that two stretch limos have been sat outside since 8:30.  These were apparently ordered by Dpommo and Dubai for post-tournament town-crawling purposes... and they've been waiting for just this moment to arrive.  And if you want a deal on limos (from €100 per hour), contact Mike Lacey.

Prediction curse struck again (read pommo's blog entry for friday to see what I mean).

Hmm, so he's won just enough to really, really damage everyone at 10/20.

50k for bankroll, no doubt they will spend the rest before they fly home... third in ur first EPT, what is he going to turn into???????

Henric's fairly relentless aggression has swung the chip lead back to him - he has 1,850,000 to Mats' 650,000.

Even before this point, from sitting way over here we almost constantly heard "Henric raises" drifting from the final table.

Guys, we've had a great weekend, let's not see it end in arguments & tears.

Feel free to have your debate by PM.

We DO know the score.

Thanks guys.

Just when Henric had whittled down Mats' chips until he had a 5 to 1 chip lead, he went and doubled him up with 3h 3s against   9d 9c... so this might take a while yet.

The balance has firmly swung the other way now - 450k for Henric this time.  The big hand involved a preflop raise of 50k from Henric, called by Mats, and a flop of  4c 8s 8h.  Mats check-raised the flop and Henric called.  Then Henrik pushed all-in over the 250k Mats bet on the  6s turn.  He called, which is not so surprising, considering he held  As 8d.  Henric's  Ad Ks was in bad shape.

Mats Gavatin is the Dublin EPT Champion!

The final hand saw Henric push with K9 and run into A9, giving him a pretty slim chance, and no help arrived.

This means that officially, Mats wins €317,000 and Henric €174,500, but I am informed they're mates and although there's no word of deals, they both look happy.  And well they might, in any case.  Congrats Swedes, you've done it again.

Cheers diva et al, it's been a busy night (thanks for those of you who tried to lighten the burden on our site! - don't worry we're on the case).

They are recording some suitable applause, and no doubt Rhow has gone to interview the last two.  It's positively early by update standards, although the clocks did go back...

A pleasure... now it's only 4 hours til I'm meant to check in - so we'll have to fill the time somehow.  Starting with dinner, then see if can face the sight of more cards.  Night.

We are all a bit wrecked, but our thanks to a huge list of people, too many to thank tonight, I'll try & do the thank yous properly later today.

But I HAVE to thank Jen, our Heroine, & the blondeites, & of course the Mods, who've had something of a stressful weekend.

Take care now.

I have to agree with previous posts, the coverage was excellent. Also big welcome dobne to DPOMMO on his 3rd place finish. This guy is going to win a few big tourneys in the months and years ahead, from what i can see he is only going to get better and better.  8)

Once again well done to Tikay and co for your superb service.

Ty for all the support, I couldn't get to a pc all weekend but messages were coming through and it did make a big difference. After getting 3 handed I was gutted to be first out, but I think I might have taken 3rd at the start of day 1 ;)

Hasn't really sunk in yet but thank you all again, I felt very undeserving  :-[

WD Tikay/Jen for the reporting again!!

POMMO - CONGRATS m8, and I know exactly what you mean about 3rd (SO CLOSE!!!), keep going m8, I am sure it will come soon (Well thats what I keep telling myself)

I do have to confess something,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, having gone out myself if in around 45thish to that Luca bloke (had a read on his all in for a middle pair, I call him with my JJ and he spikes a 9 to put me out), I DID have a "rye" smile when I heard he went out with AA vs KK ;)  - Not that I am bitter u understand.

Was great to meet so many new faces, too many to mention, and who said poker was a lazy mans game,,,,,, THOSE STAIRS!!!!!!!!!!!   Being on the top floor for most of the day, the 15 minute breaks were ummmmm fun!! You have 100 odd people rushing down stairs to the cig tent,,, quick cig,,,,, then back up 5 flights of stairs,,,,, needed a 15 minute break AFTER the 15 minute break!!! lol

Having said that, still a nice venue (made a change from the norm)

BTW,,,,, i wonder if my toasted cheese sandwich is done yet?!?!?!??!?!?!? LOLOL
