Post by: danafish on February 23, 2008, 01:03:12 PM
Good morning, good morning! We feel only slightly terrible after an assortment of awesome party-type entertainments last night, and are back at the Casino Copenhagen to watch our Final Octet or something battle it out for lots and lots of money in euros and absolutely LOADS if you put it in Danish kroner, as they will be doing.

As you can see, Tim Vance has about half the chips in play currently, but our Pick For The Day is his fellow American and Shaggy-from-Scooby-Doo-a-like Danny Ryan. Take yours now!

Danny Ryan.

Oh, you already said that.

And they are totally off!

Jen's acquiring photographic evidence that we're not just watching it on the web from our hotel beds, and the lovely Mad Harper has compiled some nice player profiles for us, coming right up...

Seat 1: Rasmus Hede Nielsen, 26, Copenhagen, Denmark  – 789,000 chips

Local boy Rasmus has been a poker professional since last August and was playing part-time for the year before that. His biggest result to date was 31st place in the Danish Championship and $23k in an online tourney. He is already known as one of the best tournament players in Denmark and is very active in the Danish poker community Pokernet.dk where he’s known as “Jungleras”.  He’s soon to be giving others a helping hand at the game teaching in an upcoming poker boot camp in Denmark. He played both EPT London and Prague but this is his first EPT cash.

Seat 2: Tim Vance, 46, PokerStars FPP qualifier from near St Louis, Illinois – 1,408,000

Chip leader Tim Vance is a friendly guy who came to Copenhagen hoping to catch up with EPT3 Barcelona winner Bjorn-Erik Glenne who he met at EPT London – “one of the best trips of his life”. There’s no Glenne here in Denmark, but there is the now super-strong prospect of a €834,000 first prize for the construction company boss from Millstott. Tim, who’s been playing poker all his life, qualified on PokerStars in a 10,000 Frequent Player Point tournament which he entered on a whim. The devoted dad has played the whole EPT with pictures of his daughter – three-year-old Nanzi - tucked inside his baseball cap. “She’s my world”, he said. Nanzi will be watching Dad from home on eptlive.com. Tim’s previous best result was $ 33k in Tunica in 2005. How does he feel about today? “It’s done”, he said. “It’s just a formality now.”

Seat 3: Danny Ryan, 24, Grand Forks, North Dakota + Alicante, Spain – 557,000 chips

Danny “THE__D__RY” Ryan is ranked as one of the best online players in the world but only really came to notice in live tourneys when he cashed in two WSOP side events last summer.  He learned to play poker as a kid with his cousins and then started playing online in college. He studied abroad and is now based in Alicante, Spain, after falling in love with the Spanish way of life. His incredible run of success in recent months has gone ballistic in the last few weeks. After cashing at EPT Dortmund two weeks ago for €52,200 – and coming 4th in the £2k side event – Danny then won £170,000 for 2nd place in an online $300 re-buy event and €75,000 for winning a PokerStars €5,000 event. He has lost count (quite literally) of the number of EPTs he has qualified for. “I don’t know – like maybe 15 or 20 times for the PCA?” he said. Danny believes his strength at poker comes from his ability to stay emotion-free. He said: “I don’t leak away my chips or get tilted. My mind stays clear.”

Seat 4: Patrik Andersson, 38, from Stockholm, Sweden – 283,000 chips

Patrik works as a sales manager for a food company in Stockholm. His biggest win so far was $75k in an online tournament and he also came 14th in Swedish Championship in 2006. He only plays Texas No Limit and likes online games for the speed of play, and live events because they’re “fun”. He started poker with five card draw as kid and he started to play online 4-5 years ago. He qualified to the tournament through a live satellite. It’s his first EPT.

Post by: danafish on February 23, 2008, 01:21:45 PM
Seat 5: Simon Dorslund, 24, from Skjern, Denmark – 267,000 chips

Simon is in the last few months of college where he’s studying dairy production. He’s not sure of his plans once he graduates but, guaranteed at least €76k today, certainly now feels tempted by poker. He’s been playing for around four years but this is his biggest result to date - with the best before that being the satellite he won to get into the event. Online he won $15k in an $170 tourney. He said: “I’ve really enjoyed myself. It’s been a lot of fun and I didn’t really expect to get this far. My goal at the beginning was just to get through to Day 2 so I’ve gone way beyond that.” Simon is being supported in Copenhagen by girlfriend Jannie.

Seat 6: Nicolas Dervaux, 33, Paris, France – 336,000 chips

Nicolas Dervaux - He used to be a professional pool player and is currently ranked 18th in France. He also owns a pool hall but plays less now that he's into poker. He is very proud of his pool achievements and slightly baffled by what he considers "all the fuss" about poker. He said: "It's easy. I just do it." He started playing online after a friend downloaded the software and explained the rules. He mainly plays cash games and always in turbo games where you have to move within five seconds - he gets bored if he has to wait more than a minute. Father-of-one Nicolas has been a pro for two years. Best result so far was €15k in an online tourney. This is his first major live tournament. Most of his experience has been in online cash games.

Seat 7: Søren "Crazy Man" (Dana and Jen's nickname, no-one actually calls him that) Jensen, 37, Arhus, Denmark - 500,000 chips

Søren Jensen caught people’s attention early on in Copenhagen with an amazing emotional outburst after taking down a huge pot on Day 2. Shouting “Come on Jutland” and “Come on the Whites” after his local football team, Søren headed out into the corridor, striding up and down and punching the air with his fist.  He said: “If I win a big pot, I have to walk away from the table and calm down. I’m very emotional. It’s my personality”. Today Soren, who manages a car painting business in Arhus, says he’s focused and “100% sure” he’ll win. He’s been playing poker for seven years after switching from whist, and now plays high-stakes 10/20 and 20/40 NLHE cash games. He bought in to Copenhagen just one minute before registration closed. Søren cashed at the 2006 WSOP but today’s guaranteed win of at least €76,000 is his best result to date. He said: “I work, so I don’t really have much time for tournaments and this my first EPT. But I’m very competitive. I’m one of four brothers and we grew up always competing against each other. I’m born to be a winner.”  Søren is supported today by younger brother Lars and girlfriend Bettina.

Seat 8: Magnus Hansen, 20, Asnaes, Denmark – 458,000 chips

IT student Magnus currently earns around 4,000 Danish kroner a month (about €500) so whatever he wins today is going to make a difference to his life. He’s certainly planning to buy a car but if he wins, he’s also considering turning pro at the end of his studies. His biggest result to date was qualifying for Copenhagen and he normally plays $100 NLHE cash games.  As well poker, Magnus is a keen Counterstrike player (someone was actually trying to tell us he is a professional Counterstrike player but none of us could quite believe that people make money that way somehow) and is a member of one of the top 20 teams in the world.

By the way Jen's laptop seems to be doing some extraordinary things currently, like freezing up and then not turning on at all, hmm, so for the time being I can merely tell you in a not-as-dramatic-as-it-would-have-been-had-Jen-done-it way that Simon Dorslund has doubled up through Patrik Andersson with a set of Queens against a pair of Aces. He suspiciously flat-called the check-raise...

Title: Re: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen - Final Day
Post by: Djinn on February 23, 2008, 01:43:47 PM
Yeah I have had a bit of a technical crisis (genuine, not just napping under table) but it looks to be fixed now...

The double up hand saw Andersson with Ac 8c going for it on an Ahrt Qh 4c flop, but raiser Dorslund had the Qd Qs and was happy to just let him bet...

Apart from that, it's been raise-pre-pass-pass-pass-etc.  Looming over the table (a bit) is Tim Vance, who seems to have gone from jumping up and down out of his seat to standing braced against the edge of the table all the way through the final.  He looks like he might get some craps dice out of his pocket and roll them down the table at any moment...

Title: Re: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen - Final Day
Post by: Djinn on February 23, 2008, 01:49:34 PM
Frenchman Nicolas Dervaux, who seemed a quiet one through most of the last two days, has been doing more than his fair share of pre-flop raising, taking down some nice blinds and antes at least five times so far.  The Paris resident is or was apparently ranked 18th in pool in France...
_____________________________________________

Patrik Andersson, having doubled through Simon Dorslund, is now in a position to re-raise all-in pre over the top of a Danny Ryan button raise.  His raise: 102,000.
"Have two face cards, eh?" thinks Danny as he works out range stuff, as you do when considering calling with... Ad 5c.  Which he does.

Patrik shows: Kh 6c

Flop: 7c 5d Js
Turn: Ts
River: Jh

So that means that Swede Patrik Andersson busts in 8th place, winning DKK569,333  €76,386

Qs Kh 7c seen as a threeway flop...
Soren Jensen checks, and Tim Vance checks, so over to Simon Dorslund on the button.  65k the bet back to Soren, who passes.  So over to Tim who's on his feet once more saying stuff like, "I don't think you got a hand, sir."  It is true that last time he said something like that he was right (that call of an all in with 99 on a Queen-high flop yesterday) and he goes with his read and raises to 260,000.  That's quite a bit.  He gets a pass and sings "I want you!  I want you so ba-a-a-ad it's driving me mad!" Whether he is talking to Soren or the chips or just playing the Beatles back catalogue in his mind is unclear.

Button limpage from Nicolas Dervaux... who so far hasn't been shy about putting in some raises.  Both blinds refrain from upping the price.
Jd 5h 8c the flop - check to Nicolas who takes it down very speedily with one bet.
______________________________

Tim Vance raises to 33k and starts a-pacing (is told not to actually leave the table when he's in a hand by T.K. though) and picks up three whole callers.
"You all got hands?" he queries a bit incredulously...
Flop: Jh Td 4s  Magnus checks, Rasmus checks, Tim Vance rubs his hands together for about 20 seconds swaying gently from side to side, before betting 133k.  Nicolas gets out of the way but Magnus Hansen was waiting to check-raise all in...
"Did you limp in with Aces, Kings or Queens?  No.  Maybe Tens or Fours."  A running commentary interspersed with questions, "You have a set of fours?  Don't want to talk to me no more?"

It's 200andsomething thousand to call.  "I call."  He decides, abruptly.

Magnus Hansen shows Th Tc
Tim Vance shows Jd Ad

Turn: 9d
River: 8s

So a double through to over half a mil from the chip leader for silent Magnus Hansen...  "Nice hand," Tim says before berating himself, "Take more TIME, Tim, take more TIME."

Mr Tim Vance has been talking to a very small person apparently concealed inside his hat.

Title: Re: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen - Final Day
Post by: danafish on February 23, 2008, 02:16:43 PM
Now Mr Vance button-raises to 33k - not very much seeing as blinds are up next hand. Big blind dairy farmer Dorslund calls.

Flop -  Aspades Jc Js and Dorslund checks it. Vance has apparently already given up and checks it too.

Turn - 4s and now Dorslund bets just 30k. Vance folds. As basically expected.

Title: Re: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen - Final Day
Post by: Djinn on February 23, 2008, 02:23:45 PM
Tim raises again - to 43k.  Small blind Nicolas Dervaux doesn't bite, but big blind Soren Jensen makes the call.
Flop: 6s 5c 3d  Soren now checks, and check behind.
Turn: 4s  Now soren bets out 40k.  Call.
River: Qs  Quick check from Soren, Tim declares A-T... but Soren has a Seven and celebrates in the way in which we have become accustomed.  He's not a continuous talker, but when he wins something he's more intense than the American, who is starting to lose his good humour a little, we sense.

Title: Re: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen - Final Day
Post by: danafish on February 23, 2008, 02:26:14 PM
Tim raises again, to 58k this time. "I want YOU... I want you so ba-a-a-ad, it's driving me mad." A lot of people are being driven mad, somehow. Everyone folds. Danny Ryan is trying not to laugh.

Title: Re: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen - Final Day

Mr Vance now punching hand and gibbering. No more coffee for that man, waitress.

Title: Re: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen - Final Day
Post by: Djinn on February 23, 2008, 02:38:40 PM
A flop of 6d Td Qd is seen by three players - Rasmus the preflop raiser, and smooth callers button Tim Vance and the big blind.
Simon checks, initial raiser Rasmus Nielsen bets 106k.  Tim talks.  The EPTlive guy says, "We're hearing this guy's brain," which is a completely accurate description of how every thought which occurs to Tim seems to come out of his mouth.

Tim raises.  To 250,000.   He plonks in 290k, but verbal declaration being binding it's a quarter mil bet... which is good enough to get rid of both opponents.  Tim Vance has clawed back a good few chips in the last 20 minutes, taking several blinds and playing almost every hand.

Title: Re: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen - Final Day
Post by: Djinn on February 23, 2008, 02:41:41 PM
The very next hand, Tim raises preflop again, taking the blinds again and throwing down his 5d 5s.  He's back up to 1.1 million chips while Rasmus Hansen is in second place with 916k.

Title: Re: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen - Final Day
Post by: Djinn on February 23, 2008, 02:51:33 PM
Being 0 for 2 on getting Danny Ryan's big blind, Tim Vance now raises from the small blind - he thinks - to take The_D_RY's bb...  But the problem is, it wasn't a blind on blind battle - Danny actually wanted to be in that pot and Tim was so busy negotiating which parts of the floor around the table he was allowed to compulsively pace over with Thomas Kremser (I kid you not) that he didn't notice.  A re-raise from Ryan and he let those chips literally fly away, ranting a little bit at TK where it was just his lack of paying attention which got him into that trouble.

I have never witnessed this level of nervous energy in a player ever - beginning to think he might have a chemical condition which might make this final extremely stressful for him.  Either way it's like having the radio on and tuned to TimVance FM.

Danny Ryan vs. Simon Dorslund...

Danny check-raises the 3s Jc 3h flop by 95k but faces a re-raise all in pretty sharpish.  It looks like one of those "I know you're likely to do x so I'm going to do y but you know I can do y so..." things.  Either way he lets it go after a summary countdown.

Title: Re: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen - Final Day
Post by: Djinn on February 23, 2008, 03:05:41 PM
Soren Jensen claps his hands vigorously, shouting into the crowd what sounds like, "Yesssy Yesssy!!" as he doubles up with Aspades Kh.  Raising on the button, Rasmus Nielsen wasn't convinced he needed to have a Proper Hand and got it in with 8c Jd on an 8h 2c Kd flop.  But the turn brought a third Kc and the river the Qh so a full double through.  It's like where Tim is continually humming, Soren is silent, bottling up his shoutiness for specific dramatic incidents like that, where he does a Victory Dance, and, according to EPT live, kissed some guy in the audience...

Not wearing Hat Of The Day, I'm afraid; best of a bad bunch, I have awarded Hat Of The Day to Simon Dorslund for his Che-style efforts. Photo of that to follow if he ever turns around for the camera.

Danny Ryan and Magnus Hansen see a Qc Ad 2d flop, which they check. They also check the 2c turn.

The river is a flushalicious 8d, should it turn out that anyone has two more diamonds. We will never know though, until the whole thing turns up on tv probably, because Danny bets 80k and Magnus folds.

Now Rasmus Nielsen moves all in! That was unexpected. He just nicks the blinds though.

Rasmus shoves again! It folds to Simon Dorslund in the big blind, who asks that dreaded question, "How much?" It's around 300k. Pause.

Call!

Simon - Ac Th
Rasmus - 5h 5s

Board - 6h Qh Kh (oooooh!) 5d (OOOOOOHHH!) Qd

Double-up for Rasmus Nielsen.

Tim Vance comes back in to the game for a raise for 53k, and small blind Simon Dørslund instantly pushes all in over the top, after the hand previous knocked him back to a short stack.  Tim, who says, "I wasn't going to talk," just can't help himself - it's an integral part of his game - but Simon is as impassive as a rock.

He's gambling as he "Wants to get it over with..."  But he finds out he's actually miles in front here:

Simon Ahrt 8d
Tim  Ad Kh

Flop 9c 2c Jd
Turn: Ts
River: 6h

Which means right now we've lost, over the course of two big hands in a row, in a kind of press-the-red-button sort of way our 7th place finisher in Simon Dørslund who takes DKK801,283  €107,507

Magnus Hansen raises 60k out of the small blind, and Rasmus Nielsen, Big Blind, considers for a moment before making the call.
Flop: 8h 7h Qc  Magnus bets out 100k (it doesn't look like so much when it's just 10 pink chips) and Rasmus grins a little bit, rechecks his hand, thinks, convinces the EPTlive commentators that a fold is imminent... and re-raises all in!

Magnus is now in a position to have to call all-in - which he does...

Magnus: 9c 9h
Rasmus:  Ad  7c

Turn: 6s
River: Kc

So another doubler up has done just that, making a brave but ultimately very rewarding call for his tournament life.

Magnus raises, and Danny Ryan raises another 120k. Magnus asks for a count on Ryan, but passes 5h 5d up.

Now Rasmus shoves again. Fellow shortstack (they both have around 200k) Nicolas Dervaux is in the big blind, but he passes.

Nicolas open-shoves, thus nicking some delicious tasty blinds. He looks unamused.

Now it's Tim's turn to nick the blinds. In absolute silence. The whole table's gone very quiet since someone gave Tim his meds.

Nicolas Dervaux tries it again almost straight away, but this time he's called immediately by Soren Jensen.  This is blind-on-blind, we think.

Ad 7d for Soren Jensen
Jh 5d for Dervaux

Flop:  Ks Jc 4d  A leap in front for the all in Nicolas
Turn:  Ahrt
River:  6h

The victory dance comes once again, plus some great hand rubbing/blowing on fingers combination like the temperature just around the Danish celebrant had lowered dramatically.... and we lose Frenchman Nicolas Dervaux in 6th place, winning DKK1,012,147  €135,798

Tim Vance raises on the cutoff, and Danny Ryan re-raises a further 150k on the button.  Both blinds just melt away.  Back to Tim, who rather predictably asks for a countdown.  It's about 500k sitting in front of Danny.  A newly quiet Tim just ponders to himself.  He only raised a little bit to start with, but decides to flat call, making the pot 407k already before the first cards appear in the middle.

Flop: 6c 7c 2s  Tim checks, Danny bets 140k.  "So you got a big pair?" asks Tim.  Tim admits he believes him, whatever that means, but calls. The pot edges upwards.

Turn: 8d  Tim (singing, or keening gently now) wishes he could stand up, complains that he can't and moves all in.  We think he just wanted to stand up, which he is, according to the Kremser ruling, now allowed to do.  A strange version of 'Let it Be' assaults Danny as he considers potentially calling all in for his whole stack, but he doesn't do it.

Tim Vance shows the 9h.

Rasmus Ad Js
Danny Ac Jh

Rasmus gets a blinds-n-antes bundle, and then raises pre again, to 70k.  This time, Tim Vance considers calling.
"Do you want the call?" asks Tim.
"I want you to push," replies Rasmus.
He calls.  That'll show him!

Flop: Ks 4c Js  Rasmus announced all in and Tim instapassed - he was shown 9c 9h by Rasmus for his call/flop-pass combo.

Flop: 9d 5h 8s  Rasmus bets out 120k... and that's good enough.

Then he pushes his luck and raises the next hand on the button, but that works, too.

Rasmus Nielsen - who can stop him?  Not Danny Ryan, who picks a spot to make resistance by moving in preflop for 350k(ish)- but it isn't such a good one:

Aspades Qs for Danny Ryan and Ad Kc for Rasmus...

Flop: 3s 2d Jd
Turn: Ac
River: 3h

So finishing in 5th we have laid-back online star Danny Ryan - he wins DKK1,286,270  €172,576.

Pass to small blind Tim Vance - who raises to 73k.
Now that Ryan is out, the big blind is Soren Jensen - but he offers no resistance.  As commentator Bill Chen says, "If a small raise keeps working, why risk a big one?"
_______________________________________

More blinds for Rasmus.

A limp-on-button-bet-the-flop combo gets Tim Vance a few chips...

Rasmus on the Button raises pre to 85k, and Soren Jensen re-raises to 280k.  This time, the first in a while, he doesn't get the blinds, but folds.  One person (possibly his brother) claps.

Next hand Magnus raises again, from the button. The blinds are his.

-----

Rasmus makes it 85k (now he has the button). The blinds are his. Shows pocket Kings!

-----

Tim makes it 73k. Magnus calls.

Flop - 7s Kh 6h - and Magnus checks. Tim talks some nonsense for a bit, ostensibly getting a read on Magnus for a set of Sevens. He bets 160k. Magnus moves all in! Tim now claims top pair. Claims he can only think standing up. He stands up. Am now thinking Magnus does have a set of Sevens. Tim seems to be under the impression that they are still five-handed. Extraordinary. He can't make up his mind and asks for a count. The pot is currently 1,198,000. So it's like 750k? Mental arithmetic failing us...

9s - double check

3h - Rasmus puts in a bet, and wins.

Oh no, someone's given Tim his coffee.

Rasmus Nielsen makes it 99k on the button - Tim Vance reraises to 350k (making sure it's OK with the TD that he stands up to do so...).  Rasmus had just under 900k at the beginning of the hand, and he's out-chipped... he calls.  That seems odd to us, and to guest commentator Annette Obrestad.  The pot's already 742k...

Flop: Jc 9s 7h  Tim shoves, Rasmus didn't want to look at the flop, but calls after taking a cursory glance...
Rasmus shows:  8c 8d - he's ahead
Tim shows:  Ac Qd

Turn: Js  Tim says, sounding a little panicky - "This is my second time in the tournament being in behind..."  Someone up there took pity on him because the river came:
Aspades

Soren Jensen does the victory dance, in honour of Rasmus busting and him climbing the payout ladder.

But it's curtains for Rasmus Hede Nielsen who busts in 4th place, winning DKK1,560,394  €209,355

83k is the raise on the button from Tim Vance - Soren Jensen IMMEDIATELY shoves in a big stack of pink 10k chips on the small blind - 250k worth of them.  Tim has the odd habit of talking to himself, out loud, in the third person.  At this point he's worrying about whether Soren has a pair. And having convinced us that he has A-K A-Q he says, "I have a pair, I don't know if I can lay it down."  Lots of very confusing contradictory statements from Vance - his opponents must have to just filter it out.

Call.

Flop:  Kd Jh 5h  Soren, first to speak, freezes for a moment, licks his lips and checks.  Tim checks behind.
Turn:  Jc  check-check
River:  5d  check-check

"I play the board," says Tim, which sets Soren off big time.  He must have had a little pair because he has to have won, the amount of screaming going off.

"Can I get a towel?" asks Soren, who has sweated himself into a celebratory frenzy.  But as quickly as it begun, it's over.  Next hand.

Should point out - Soren was wearing that t-shirt yesterday too. Must be getting a little bit, er, funky up on final table...

Indeed he was actually talking into his hat, but sadly not also spanking Thomas Kremser as he appears to be doing.

Flop - Ts 4h 9h

Magnus bets out.

Soren insta-all in! But now he's walked off! Surely if Tim's banned from walking off while he's in a hand, so is Soren?

Call!

Magnus 6h- Td

Soren 4s- 9s

Turn - 5h giving Magnus some more outs there, but

River - 7s

Meaning that Magnus Hansen is OUT in 3rd place, winning DKK 2,045,381 or €209,355!

Apparently what Soren Jensen was saying in Danish roughly translates to that when he wins, he's going to sell the piece-of-crap trophy for 20 kroner, or something. Apparently.

Also, it has been confirmed that Soren Jensen has not changed clothes since the start of the tournament, including socks, and underwear. Awesome.

Imagine the flip book of this elimination...

Magnus Hansen waits, tense, as he sees his hand in trouble on the flop...

Soren Jensen tenses in expectation of a favourable river, secure in his ability to take top prize (he said he will just sell the trophy...)

And as the river is dealt busting Hansen, Jensen literally springs round and into the air, like he's been shot out of a Glory Cannon:

Tim nicks the blinds.

-----

Soren limps in and Tim checks.

Flop - 6d Kd Ad and they both check.

Turn - 6s and Tim checks; Soren min-bets. "I wrote that money off when I put it out there," says Tim and passes. Soren shows a King.

-----

Tim raises to 120k, Soren calls.

Flop - 9h 2d Jh - Soren checks, and Tim bets 200k. Soren calls

Turn - Qh - Soren checks again. Tim checks this time as well.

River - 6c - they check, and show. Soren has J-7, Tim has a Nine. There is no massive celebrating. No-one leaves the table for any reason, nor makes any phone calls/ imaginary phone calls to one's hat. Extraordinary.

Tim Vance raises on the button.  90k total.  That's only just double the big blind, but Soren has repeatedly passed to these raises and he does so again.

Soren makes up the small blind and Tim checks.  Flop:  8s Ahrt 9s.  Check to Soren who takes it with a min-bet of 40k.

Tim Vance raises on the button.  105k this time.  Soren passes.  Deja vu #1.

Limp to Tim, 9c 2h 4h 2s seen without a bet -  but now Tim bets 90k.  Well, he says, "Ninety," and puts out 160k, but it goes as 90k.  Soren calls.
River: 5h  Check from both players - K-4 in Soren's hand wins that pot, and his brother applauds like a crazy man.

Tim raises to 100k pre on the big blind after Soren had limped on the button.  Autocall.
Flop: Aspades 8s 8d.  Tim checks, Soren checks.
Turn:  Jc  ch-ch
River: Jh  ch-ch

Split as the board plays for both players.  It appears that he'd made it 100k to go out of position pre with K-9 and then just switched off on the flop.

Tim raises to 100k, Soren calls.

Flop - Td 8c Ad - they both check.

Turn - Ahrt - and they check. Again.

River - Js - and everyone checks again. None us really understand what's going on any more.

Turn: 5d  Check, check.  (EPTLive says, "Somewhere, Bill Chen is screaming.")

River:  Soren stares, and checks, threateningly.  Check from Tim who holds his cards face down until it's revealed that his 7c 7d wins.

Ripples of consternation spread through the audience, slowly.

Hand #35 of heads up:

Tim calls on the button, Soren checks.

Flop:  2c 7c 8c  Check to Tim, who bets 100k which wins that one.
______________________________________

Tim raises to 140k, called by Soren.
Flop:  Qs 7h Kd  Now Tim checks, Soren bets 80k and Tim calls.  Soren gurns a little bit, and turns his glasses upside down in a weird kind of parody of Marcel Luske.  He is looking pretty crazy.
Turn: 2c  Tim checks again, Soren bets 200k and Tim... sings a bit and chats a bit.  "I think I'm ahead," says Tim.  Both players stand up and then Tim folds and is shown the expected big hand: K-7 for two pair.

This is just getting weirder and weirder.

Tim has worked out how to raise properly - 180k. Soren calls. Intriguing. Sort of.

The flop says - 2h 9c Kc - oh look, double check
8c - um, double check
Ks - errr, check, and check

It's Queen-high for Soren. Tim has a Nine in his hand, but apparently didn't notice it and was trying to muck. This is awesome poker.

A Tim-bet and a Soren-call on a flop of 2c Td 8c bringing the 9c on the turn.  Soren now bets out 200k eliciting a "Wow..." from his opponent, and also a pretty quick all-in, unexpectedly.  Now, louder, the refrain:  "I WANT YOU!  I WANT YOU SO BAAAD IT'S DRIVING ME MAD IT'S..." etc.  Fold from Soren when it had looked like he was pretty confident.
_____________________________________

Soren calls another Tim-raise, this time out of position, and they see some more clubs:  8c 7c 2c.  Tim checks, Soren checks.
Turn: Ts  Tim checks, Soren checks.
River: Js

A-7 is the winning hand (Tim's) and while they may have said that Soren showed a losing pair of Fives, he actually showed a losing, er, 3h 5d.

Turn:  Js  Tim now checks, Soren bets 160k - Call.  (Say what you will about them, they don't stall or dwell for camera time - it's all fast action, of sorts)
River:  7h  Double check - and Tim's 2c 4h take it from Soren and his Aspades J-something which may have been a diamond but I couldn't see.

To be fair, neither of them were playing like this through the earlier stages of the final, and indeed the tournament itself - both are capable of making big calls and probably some sorts of moves, but it looks like the heads-up format isn't exactly a great showcase for their talents...

After the most recent break, it's been Soren's turn to make some action, taking the initiative in the three early pots.

Ac 7c 5c was a flop seen by both of them, with Soren as the preflop raiser.  But it's Tim who bets out 200k into Soren, who raises to 400k.  Back to Tim who flat calls.  See - a big pot - as predicted...
Turn: 5s  Check from Tim, check from Soren
River: 2d  Tim bets out 400k immediately upon seeing it, and he's called.

A-8 for Soren, beating Tim's A-2 as the eight kicker plays with Aces and Fives... and predictably Soren and his brother, drinking beer, go crazy - Soren nuts his brother and then kisses him.  The rest of the crowd maintain a slightly horrified silence.

On a board of 7d Js Th 6c it's been double-check to in-position Tim, who in the hand previously gave his opponent a free card to suck out on the river, and doesn't look overly keen on making the same mistake again.  Nope - a bet takes it for him there...
____________________________________

Tim raised to 140k preflop and they see a flop of 8c 2h Tc.  Check to Tim, who bets 200k and here comes an entirely unexpected check-raise to 400k.  Which Tim calls quickly.  The audience actually claps at this point.
Turn: Qs  check... ... ... check
River: Jc  All in from Tim, a very impressive frown on Soren's face leads to a dwellette... and a CALL!

Now it's Tim fist-pumping and shouting and drifting round and round the table like he's on a scalextrix track... which means he's just doubled through!

It appears Soren hand Qd Ts - that's two pair on the turn, when he checked and Tim made his Flush on the river.

Soren, now on the back foot, and kicking himself for the apparent "two mistakes" he's made, is looking in a raising mood - that 800k or so determined to make its way in there even if it takes an all-in bet out of turn like he made on the first hand....  ::)

Tim Vance raises to 200k preflop and sure enough Soren Jensen's stack goes in.  He needs to call the extra 600k for a chance to knock out his Danish opponent, who remains completely mute, only shaking his head when asked if he can beat an Ace.  Well, if he thought he meant, "Can you beat an Ace if one flops..."

Tim shows Kh Qh
Soren shows Kd Kc

Flop:  Qs 7d Js
Turn: Ks
River: totally irrelevant 2c

Double up to 1,600,000 for Soren, while Tim apologises to himself, his hat, and repeats, "Badcallbadcallbadcall..."

Tim Vance calls Soren's preflop raise of 200k on the button, having limped seconds earlier.
Flop: 8h 9c 4c  Soren bets out 400k and Tim sounds serious when he asks for a countdown...  He moves in... and Soren makes that super frowny face...

...

...

and folds, showing the Kh.

You know that bit in Heroes where Hiro Nakamura discovers he can make time go backwards...?

We feel a bit like that in the press room.

Soren calls on the button, and Tim checks.

Flop: 4d 5d Aspades  check-check
Turn: 3s  Tim and Soren check
River: Ad  check shrug check shrug

King high wins that one for Tim Vance.  sigh.

Tim - 3,520,000
Soren - 1,080,000

Tim raises 180k to nick the blinds.

-----

They limpingly see a flop - it's 3h 2s 9s. And a turn - 8s. And a river - 6s. Soren bets! Tim sighs. And folds.

-----

Tim makes it 180k to nick the blinds. It's like we've been here before.

-----

They limpingly see a flop - it's 7d 7c 2h. Soren bets 80k, Tim calls.
Turn - Ahrt - Tim checks and Soren bets 80k again. Call.
River - 2c - Tim checks and Soren goes all in - this represents action, but somehow none of us are jumping around with excitement in the press room. Tim folds, obviously.

This time Soren calls Tim's 180k button raise.

3h Jd 8h - they both go all in!  No, they don't. They both check.
They also check the  Aspades turn and the Qd river. Soren wins, probably.

110k raise preflop, called by Tim... The flop came raggy, disconnected etc.
Check to Soren, who quickly moves all in... "Got a hand, huh?" asks Tim... and gets an answer, presumably inaudible to the rest of them - he folds.

6.2 million DKK on the line, and Tim has moved his virtual music shuffle on to "Ti - i i i ime, is on my side - yes it is!" which doesn't seem to be the case seeing as the blinds might make 50k/100k before this is over.

Tim says "I can't win," and flips Ten high.   He wins.

Four frustration beers have been ordered for me, Jen, Mike Lacey and Kristen assortedly, at a cost of DKK 240, or around 25 quid.

No amusing frocks spotted, but we are offering Rury from Sik Tilt a sum of kroner to become the first ever EPT streaker, in an effort to move the action along.

25 quid for four beers?  No wonder they're called frustration beers.

Blinds are now 50k/100k, by the way. Our tournament clock doesn't even have that level on it.

Title: Re: Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen - Final Day
Post by: Djinn on February 24, 2008, 12:10:46 AM
Soren Jensen raises to 150k before realising the blinds have gone up to 50k/100k and making it 200k.  There is some confusion, actually - it may have been meant to be 150k more - in which case Tim is throwing his toys out of the pram saying, "I'll have to reconsider my call."  He calls.

Flop:  Kh 7c 6c  Tim checks, Soren declared all in immediately.  "The King don't worry you at all, huh?  I call."

Soren shows Qd 7h
Tim shows Ks 4c

Turn: Qh  The crowd half-groans and half-cheers
River: 7d  Soren, having gotten it all in behind, ends up with a full house and a stack approaching that of Tim Vance.  OMG.

I think this one, for all its blurriness, adequately captures the emotions of both players. Soren - grandstandtastic. Tim - throwing hat on floor.

"Anything could happen in the next half hour," says John Duthie.

Like, Tim limping on the button, Soren checking, and seeing 6h Jc 3s 3h for free before Tim takes it with a 200k bet right there.  Soren gives him a vigorous round of applause for some reason and play trundles on..

Wait!  There's an all-in re-raise from Tim Vance putting some pressure on Soren who passes showing the Ac.  Looked close there, though... Tim has nudged into the lead.

6s Qd 3c Jc 8c.  All seen free of charge.  Until the river when Tim bets 200k, and gets a call; his Jacks and Eights two pair beating Soren's Eights only.  That is indeed a light river call - signs of fatigue are really showing on both players, but perhaps Soren more.  I don't know whether he could summon the energy for the Victory Dance at this hour, should it be appropriate...

After half an hour, Soren's stack is in pretty big trouble at the start of this hand...

2c 7c 8s  Soren checks, Tim checks
Turn: 3s   Now Soren bets out 115k, quickly called by Tim.
River: 4s  Soren now moves in - Tim says, "It was nice playing with you, sir," and calls - which can only mean ONE THING

His Aspades Ts made the nuts on the river, and he has knocked out Soren Jensen in 2nd place, for DKK3,521,429  €472,463

While we have a winner - the Champion of the Pokerstars.com EPT Copenhagen is Timothy Vance, who takes home DKK6,220,488  €834,590

Tim Vance, being interviewed by Kara Scott, looks absolutely shell-shocked - a very different person from the garrulous table-talker - the emotion of winning after such a long battle is evident on his face, and it's clear that he has been thinking of his daughter for whom (and to whose picture in his hat) he has played all through the tournament.  Photo coming from Dana, but we are at the end of our EPT-flavoured tether...

We're writing the tournament report right now, it'll be up at the William Hill site soon.

IMO too...

thakns to Dana and Jen for the report and how they succed to make interresting some of the boring part of the tourney with things like hat awards, joke and so other things...

only one thing but not their fault... I've really not appreciate the head's up : too long and with one really unpleasent player (I let you imagine who...)

Days will be too long waiting for San Remo...  ;hattip;

A last thing : It could be nice (and easy to do with the "post-it" forum options) but maybe it's more hard to organize (I don't know) to have a little shedule of the tourneys blonde will cover...
