Title: Bluesquare.com London GUKPT Final Day - At A Glance
Post by: danafish on March 09, 2008, 01:55:15 PM
Good morning good morning,

Especially for Sofa King, and anyone else who would like to post entertaining and poorly photoshopped pictures, I bring you...

Today's Thread!

Spotted so far - actually just a lone Marius Hogtun drinking beer in the casino. But we're all set up in the press room and I suspect all the other players are lurking somewhere, so rest assured that we will be watching them play the good poker, and at some point today we will have a Winner.

These are our players:
Tony Phillips   668000
David Rudling   546500
Maria Demetriou   470000
Ketul Nathwani   410500
Alessandro Meoni 349500
Lloyd Reece   346000
Dan Sansom   310000
Darren Pearce   294500
Steve Jelinek   258000
Colin Kennedy   243500
Marius Hogtun   144000
Fran Egan   101000
Simon Wickenden   67000
Davood Mehrmand   55500

And this is what they're playing for:
1st £119,780
2nd  £69,960
3rd   £50,880
4th   £33,920
5th   £26,500
6th   £20,140
7th   £15,900
8th   £12,720
9th    £9,540

There has been a redraw, which has taken a little time to orchestrate, and also at the time of writing no-one could find any dealers, according to over-keen field reporter Junglecat. Should hopefully be starting soon though...

And they're off! We're employing a kind of relay strategy today, to ensure there's at least one of us in the cardroom at all times. I suspect we will soon see either the demise of, or the spectacular comeback of, Davood Mehrmand and Simon Wickenden, the both of them on 5 or 6 big blinds currently. Eek.

Unsurprisingly, the fast paced action has continued from where it left off yesterday, Fran Egan doubling up within the first couple of hands with Pocket Rockets against the K-Q of Dan (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=996) Samson (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=996). Samson loses a third of his stack.

-----------

Bedlam here. Another gone in Simon Wickenden. We didn't catch the full pattern of play, but by the end, Simon had T-8 on a T-Q-2-Q-2 board. Unfortunately, Tony Phillips had T-9, and although it may take a double look, that all-important does indeed play to give Tony the pot.

As displayed by the picture of Dana above, it's shocking stuff down here at the Grosvenor Victor, if only because the players are dropping like lemmings on a tightrope. He managed to survive two exits, but shortstacked Davood (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=124) Mehrmand (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=124) is now OUT. Pushing with K-8 pre-flop, he was looked up by Marius' A-5. The Td-6d-9c-Tc-9h board was of no use and the bouffant is gone.

Marius Hogtun makes it 36k from the button. Danny Rudling is on the big blind. There is a long pause. Really long. They're staring at each other, twiddling chips. Eventually someone calls the clock. More staring. 30 seconds left. Pipes up Rudling, "Let this one go, son. You can have my blind next time." Looks of confusion on the faces of Marius and your updaters. "Er, what?" Apparently Rudling had quietly gone all in and Marius (and I) hadn't noticed and were under the impression that the clock had been called on Rudling. "Oh yes, of course," he says, and pushes his chips in. Much merriment.

Marius Hogtun - 9h 9d
David (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=123) Rudling (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=123) - Ad Qh

Board - 2c 7s 4d 6h 2d

A double-up for the twigged-just-in-the-nick-of-time Marius. Just out of interest, say he hadn't twigged and had run out of time, what do you reckon the ruling would have been when they tried to fold his hand?

Title: Re: Bluesquare.com London GUKPT Final Day - At A Glance
Post by: danafish on March 09, 2008, 02:55:07 PM
Chili's taken a pretty big hit. Dan Samson raised and Chili re-raised enough to put him in. He called with A-J, dominated by her A-K, but oh the cruelty!

Board - 5s 5c 2s Qs Jc

Not sure exactly how big the pot was, Junglecat tells me it looked to be about 300k, but it could well be more - general consensus in the pressroom was that Samson had over 200k at the start of the hand...

Post by: danafish on March 09, 2008, 03:02:25 PM
Rollercoaster ride for Maria, yikes.

She and Dan Samson see a flop; it is Ts Jd 3d. Dan bets 12k, Maria calls.

Turn - 9d - and they both check now.

River - Th - and Maria bets 30k. Dan calls, and his Ten for rivered trips squashes her Jack for two pair. Chili is burning with fiery rage, and down to around 200k.

Title: Re: Bluesquare.com London GUKPT Final Day - At A Glance

But Marius-on-Maria action!

In a classic gods-paying-her-back-for-that-AK-v-AJ-outdraw scenario, Maria has totally sucked out against Marius Hogtun. He raised from the button and she shoved with Qd Td, only to get herself called by Marius' unbelievably-dominatey A-Q.

Board Of Divine Demetriou Favour - Kd 6d 9s 7h 2d

Back up to around 400k, we reckon; Marius way back down that all important chip-based leaderboard thingy.

Some tableside gossip from Doglet:

Tony Phillips told him that he's not had a good start to the day. He's apparently raised five times, and every time he's had to lay it down to a re-raise because he's, er, been at it with absolutely nothing. Also, he says that the whole table is pretty tight, except for Ketul Nathwani two places to his right, who likes to play his button really strongly, thus eating all Tony's blinds. Yikes and similar.

Also David Rudling has been playing a very aggressive game, it seems, because he raises from the button and Dan Samson says, "Hmm, I have Five-high and I'm thinking it's good." He folds and Rudling asks him if he'd like to see, and he doesn't. Fran Egan does, but Rudling won't show him. Not even one. By the time he's finished arguing that he was the small blind and therefore had equity in the hand and somehow deserved to see, the cards have found their way into the muck, so we shall never know...

Mr Colin KENNEDYYYYYYYYY!!!!!

...has doubled up.

Blind-on-blind action, Tony Phillips with  Ahrt Qc in the small blind and Colin KENNEDY!!!!! with 9d 9s in the big blind. KENNEDY!!!! all in for 202k preflop.

Board - 4d 2d 6d 6s 5h

...And also another double-up for Fran Egan and his microstack! All in pre with Kd Kh against Marius Hogtun holding, er, Jh 5s.

Board - 3h 3c Ad 9s 4h

Says Egan in celebration, "Bing bong. I talked him into calling with J-5."

Nevertheless he remains the short stack - he's on probably around 150 or 200k.

News from the other table...

Tony (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1339) Phillips (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1339) raises it up and Meoni and Ketul Nethwan both call from the blinds.

There is no action on any streets of the Ad 7d Th Jh 4c board till the river, where Ketul puts out a bet of 70k.

It's called by Phillips who shows Ac 2c for top pair and Ketul looked like he was trying to make a thin value bet with his 2nd pair Js 9h but it was no good.

Phillips has strengthened his position after a wobble whilst Meoni now finds himself short...

Title: Re: Bluesquare.com London GUKPT Final Day - At A Glance
Post by: danafish on March 09, 2008, 03:38:57 PM
And a dirty exit!

Excitable Italian Alessandro Meoni raises from the button, and Ketul Nathwani re-raises from the small blind. Meoni moves all in, and Ketul must have just boiled over or something, because he calls.

Ketul Nathwani -  Aspades 8s
Alessandro Meoni - Ad Kh

And obviously Nathwani flops the nuts on a 2s 9s Ts Ahrt Tc board, and Meoni is OUT in 11th place. Apparently he takes it badly, according to Field Reporter Doglet: "He waved his arms around a lot. You know, like he was angry. Lots of waving. Then he stormed off."

Ketul is our new chip leader with over 900k.

Title: Re: Bluesquare.com London GUKPT Final Day - At A Glance
Post by: JungleCat03 on March 09, 2008, 04:20:39 PM
Things have gone a little quiet at the tables in recent times.

David Rudling has maintained the aggression he has shown recently, illustrated by one hand where Marius raised to 40k, to be met by a re-raise to 140k by David.

Floppy haired Marius said "I might do something stupid here..."...but passed.

"Wouldn't be the first time" was David's comical put down. 1-0 to Rudling in that exchange i think.

Meanwhile, all this tension is clearly getting Fran thirsty. He is heard bellowing to the rail "Get me a f******* pint!" That's a man who needs a drink.

Steve Jelinek has doubled up!

Holding 9-T he was getting a little short and shoved preflop only to find the well chipped up Ketul calling with K-Q.

A flop of 5c 2h Th 9s Td gave Steve a decisive full house, and left Ketul steaming. Will any hands hold up today??!!

We are on a short break for the players to gather their thoughts and re-formulate their strategies.

Title: Re: Bluesquare.com London GUKPT Final Day - At A Glance
Post by: danafish on March 09, 2008, 04:46:28 PM
David Rudling makes up the blinds and Fran Egan checks. They both check the Qd 5c 4s flop, and then Rudling checks the Qs turn. Fran bets 35k, and Rudling check-raises him all in! Fran dwells for a good long while before calling the clock on himself and folding. He declares, "You're my nemesis." Says Dan Samson, "I think the term is 'bitch', actually."

Title: Re: Bluesquare.com London GUKPT Final Day - At A Glance
Post by: JungleCat03 on March 09, 2008, 04:59:53 PM
And then there were 9!

Dan Samson limps in on Marius' big blind. Marius pops it up to 100k, only to find Dan now re-raising allin!

"I guess I have to call now" Marius said and without too much enthusiasm called off his stack...

Dan - a craftily played pair of ladies Q-Q
Marius - a dominated but still in there with a shout A-5.

FLOP: 2h 8s Kd Td 5d

No Ace for Marius, and as Dan had him covered that means he is out on the final table bubble, and we are down to our final 9 competitors! Snoops is in the card room now catching all the thrills and spills.

Here is Marius and his floppy hair, being warmly congratulated by Jon Raab for his performance.

and Dan Samson racking up his newly acquired booty.

Early play has been cagey, with basically everyone stealing the blinds in turn. More updates soon as anything happens.

By the way if you'd like bios/more photos of our finalists, please click on their underlined names for their blondepedia entries (I think for some reason Ketul may be listed as Ketu Nathwani). Only one who doesn't at least have a page on blondepedia is Fran Egan - can anyone tell us anything about him (except that he really wants a f***ing pint)?

Closest Thing To Action To Happen So Far:

Colin Kennedy makes it 75k and everyone folds except for Steve Jelinek, who goes all in. Kennedy dwells for a while, but passes.

UPDATER UPDATE - In the Bad Beat Of The Day, Snoopy has only just noticed a PM that Floppy apparently sent him yesterday saying he could have the day off today, but he only just got it and he's here now, full of we-didn't-get-enough-sleep sadness. UL, Beagle.

Post by: danafish on March 09, 2008, 05:58:17 PM
Junglecat just called me to say that nothing had happened, but that chip leader Ketul was predictably being the most raisey player on the table, also re-raising David Rudling, who is probably the next most aggressive player.

Then he called me back 2 minutes later to say that something had actually happened! Fran Egan raised from the button, leaving himself around 80k behind. Tony Phillips flat-called from the small blind.

Flop - Kh Qs 8d and Tony moves all in. After a medium-sized dwell, Fran calls.

Fran - A-Q
Tony - 6-6

Turn - 8c
River - 3d

Double-up for the thirsty Irishman!

best of luck to him today.

Bold Bluffing From Plucky Irishman:

Chili makes up the blinds and Fran checks. They see a flop, obviously.

That flop is 7c 8d 8h

Chili bets 30k, Fran raises to 80k. Maria passes, and Fran shows Qs 3d...

Junglecat says: Ketul is still owning the table in terms of preflop raising and whatnot. So far no-one's stood up to him so he's getting away with it, but things can change at any moment.

Translation: not much is happening at the moment.

Title: Re: Bluesquare.com London GUKPT Final Day - At A Glance
Post by: danafish on March 09, 2008, 06:21:34 PM
The Ketul domination continues.

Tony Phillips raises preflop and Ketul calls.

They see a flop, it is exactly 9h Js 7s and Tony bets 90k. Ketul goes all in! And Tony passes.

------------

But there is fighting back!

Next hand Ketul makes it 51k from late-ish position, only for Dan Samson to make it 160k from the cut-off. Ketul passes.

Title: Re: Bluesquare.com London GUKPT Final Day - At A Glance
Post by: danafish on March 09, 2008, 06:25:53 PM
Steve Jelinek has dropped 120k in two hands - he's down to around 340k.

First he standard-raises, only to have to lay it down when Lloyd Rees moves in from the blind. Down one chunk.

Then the next hand he bets 55k, and is called by Fran Egan on the button. They see a flop - it is Th 6d Kh - and Jelinek checks. Fran Egan announces all in, but he also does that checky-fingery thing and the dealer almost deals the turn by accident. Laughs Steve, "Bit if a difference," and passes Pocket Eights face up. Down two chunks.

Steve Jelinek -- 340,000
Maria Demetriou -- 315,000
Fran Egan -- 480,000
Lloyd Rees -- 325,000
Tony Phillips -- 439,000
Colin Kennedy -- 202,000
David Rudling -- 200,000
Ketul Nathwani -- 1,200,000

HUUUUUGE HANDWATCH

Ketul makes it 51k, and Tony Phillips snaps - he moves all in for around 400k. Ketul thinks about it for a while. And calls!

Ketul - Pocket Nines
Tony Phillips - er, Kc 4d

Board - BANG - Kd 6h 5s 5c 4d

[Tenuous pun warning] And a very lucky double-up for a Phillips whose head may not have been screwed on right.

It folds around to Colin Kennedy on the small blind, who decides to take his short-stack chances. He moves all in. David Rudling in the big blind gives it a good old dwell, and then calls.

Kennedy - Ks Th
Rudling - Ad 4c

Board - Qc Tc 2c Aspades 5d

Which means that Colin  Kennedy is OUT in 9th place, winning £9,540.

Lloyd Rees is OUT and becomes the 8th place finisher winning £12,720

Well, maybe you're perhaps Lady Luck is shining on Tony Phillips today as he's just followed up his double through by taking out young Lloyd Rees from Bristol.

All-in pre-flop, Lloyd found himself in hot water...

Lloyd = Ad 5d

Tony = Ac Jd

Board = 3h 9c Js Qs 8c

Title: Re: Bluesquare.com London GUKPT Final Day - At A Glance

Fran Egan is OUT and becomes the 7th place finisher winning £15,900

Ginger Bulldozer Tony Phillips is unstoppable at the moment, his latest scalp being enigmatic, and perhaps slightly intoxicated Irishman Fran Egan.

With Fran raising it to 70k pre-flop, Tony called a couple of seats down and the two players saw a 7h Js 9c Flop.

Fran announced all-in, only to be instacalled by Tony.

Tony = Jh 9d

Fran = 8h 5s

Turn = 5c

River = 7d

As Tony celebrated with his fanbase on the rail, Fran looked as though he wanted to throw up, but resisted the urge to vomit in front of the cameras, instead taking defeat on the chin and shaking the hand of his foe before departing.

Very difficult for our ringside reporter to produce accurate chip counts, so the following is just an approximation:

David Rudling -- 600k
Tony Phillips -- 1,6 million
Steve Jelinek -- 500k
Ketul Nathwani -- 600k
Maria Demetriou -- 400k
Dan Samson -- 400k

Carnage people.

Steve Jelinek reputedly just open shoved his stack into the middle on Ketul's BB.

Ketul INSTA-calls Steve's shove!

Wowzer.

Steve shows and Ketul flips . It's a big race.

BOARD:

Steve loses the race, meaning Ketul is propelled up the leaderbaord and...

Steve Jelinek is OUT, elminated in 6th place, winning £20,140

Good game Steve.

Approximate chip counts as they head four-way-wards:

Tony Phillips - 1.6 million
Ketul Nathwani - 1.6 million
Davi Rudling - 600k
Dan Smanson - 350k

They just came back from a 5-minute break, during which they may or not have discussed a deal - although as Tony Phillips wandered off, I overheard him saying that he didn't think there would be a deal at all...

MORE CARNAGE!

This time there's more controversy.

Ketul makes it 62k and Chili SHOVES for 242k total.

Ketul now announces CALL, but Tony Phillips is still to act and wanted to call also...

...A ruling is made, which is that Tony can still act behind but Ketul is obliged to now call.

Tony reluctantly passes A-K.

Back to the hand and Maria shows Ad Td, and is delighted to be in good shape versus Ketul's 8h 6h.

The flop has something for both players as it comes 2d 8d Qh.

Ketul has made a pair but Maria has 2 overs and the nut flush draw. Shocking.

TURN: Ah !

Maria zips ahead on the turn now with top pair to complement her nut flush draw, but it also gives Ketul a flush draw...

RIVER: 2h !

OMG! Ketul rivers the flush to take down the pot and it's a brave performance from blondite Chili but that painful river card means...

Maria Demetriou is OUT, eliminated in 5th place, winning £26,500

Incidentally Tony Phillips was NOT happy about that hand as had he managed to isolate Chili he would have won the pot, but Ketul being forced to call meant that he felt he should fold AK given the tournament situation...Controversy reigns...

Rudling raises to 85k, and is repopped by Ketul to 220k, Rudling flats.

FLOP: 9h 9d Ts

Check, check.

TURN: Kh

Rudling checks, Ketul bets 100k and Rudling passes pretty swiftly. He's getting a bit short now...

Soon after, Tony Phillips raises to 75k  and Rudling moves ALLIN! He's short but just about ahs enough to make Phillips pass...

"I've made worse calls than this before" says Tony before eventually calls with Kd Js.

Rudling is pleased to show the dominating Aspades Kc.

BOARD: 3h Ahrt 3s 7d 8c

No surprises and Rudling bounces himself back into contention. Good work David!

There is a board; it is Td Jc 6s 3c

Tony Phillips bets a nice non-round 173k, but Dave Rudling makes it a good round All In. Tony laughs and asks whether the Three on the turn helped him. He folds. Rudling shows Ac Kh. Doglet tells me that Mr Rudling is aflame, or burning, or I think he said something like that...

A HUUUUUGE hand

The board is 9s 7h 4s Jh and Rudling checks. Ketul bets 100k, and Rudling calls.

The river is the 6d, and Rudling checks again. Ketul bets a whopping 225k, and Rudling flat-calls. Imagine his disappointment upon seeing Ketul's Pocket Sixes. He mucks, and Ketul sweeps a big chunk of Rudling's stack into his own monstrous uber-stack.

Dan Samson finds himself all-in and in need of some assistance...

Dan = Ahrt 7d

Dave Rudling = Ts Tc

Board = Js 8d Ad Ks 2c

Dave takes another hit in what has become a rollercoaster of a final table. The frustration on his face was there for all to see. Meanwhile, Dan is unusually restrained in victory, perhaps all too aware that he just played a get out of jail free card.

Ketul has morphed into an Akira-stylee Gigantic Ultimate Ketul Warrior, rampaging all over his table.

He button-raises, and Tony Phillips calls him.

The flop is 4h 9h Ts and they both check.

Turn - 2s - Tony checks again and Ketul bets 120k; he is called.

River - another 2d and once more Tony checks. Not messing about, Ketul announces all in. Tony folds.

I AM ULTIMATE KETUL!!!! YOU ARE MY SLAVES!!!!!!

...is something he did not say, but I wish he had. Sigh.

And Dave Rudling has a spot of luck when it folds around to Tony Phillips on the small blind, who promptly puts him in with K-3; Rudling finds A-Q and calls.

Board - Q-8-2-3-Q for a Rudling good double-up.

"Keep the applause to a minimum, everyone" says he, as a single guy claps from the rail.

Dave Rudling is OUT and becomes the 4th place finisher winning £33,920

As Dan and Tony threw in their cards, Dave Rudling raised it up to 80k from the small blind only for the super aggressive Ketul Nathwani to announce all-in. Dave called quicker than Linford Christie with a rocket lodged between his bum cheeks and proudly revealed his A-J, confident that it was in front. And he was right, as Ketul could only produce an inferior Q-2.

However, as we already know, poker can be a cruel game at times, and when you have two live cards, and a big stack in front of you, the board can often fall in your favour. The Kh-4c-2s Flop didn't too anything to dispel that mythical theory, and when the Turn and River came 7 of hearts and 9 of hearts respectively, Rudling was gone.

Dan Samson is OUT and becomes the 3rd place finisher winning £50,880

Crikey O'Reilly, we've more action here than a night out on the town with the Beagle, the latest player to feel the wrath of the Kettle being plucky Dan Samson who did marvellously well to finish in 3rd place for a highly commendable £50,800.

Once again, Ketul required some assistance from the board, but unlike before, this was a classic coinflip situation, Ketul's Ac Jh looking to pair up against Dan's Th Ts.

As the board was dealt, Dan looked on intently, perhaps thinking what I have written in brackets...

Qh (okay card)

7h (good card)

9s (another okay card)

7d (excellent card!!!)

(Just one more to survive. Come one...)

Ahrt (Barf!)

In the end, it was Samson who was left steaming.

------------

Ketul Nathwani -- 3.8 million
Tony Phillips -- 470k

...And that's it!

Tony moves in, and Ketul dwells a little before making the call.

Ketul - 5h 5d
Tony - Ad 2s

Board - Qc Qd 3d Jd 6h

Which means that Tony Phillips is OUT in 2nd place winning £69,960...

...Thus necessarily Ketul Nathwani is the ULTIMATE WINNER!!! of the 2008 Bluesquare.com London GUKPT, winning £119,780!

Hopefully a few photos to follow...

A last few pictures for your enjoyment folks.

First off we have Ketul and Phillips shaking hands as they prepare to do battle.

And with Ketul victorious, here he is, with runner up finisher Tony Phillips.

Ketul was asked how he intends to spend next year. "Probably win a few bracelets" was the confident reply from the newly crowned GUKPT champion, and with the accomplished way he played through the tournament, he might just do it.

I'll leave you with a final shot of Ketul Nathwani, the London GUKPT Champion, celebrating his victory in style by french kissing his new trophy. Very well played sir!

Ok, that's it!

What a great tournament, exciting througout, with twists and turns aplenty ultimately resulting in a new GUKPT champ being crowned.

Well done to Maria for a great 5th position, and also Jen, who came so close, knocked out just before the final table.

We've had great fun. Thanks very much to the Grosvenor for looking after us so well and providing us with a bottomless pit of sandwiches. They were much appreciated.

That's it though for now. We're off to have a well earned drink or two...thanks for joining us.

Don't forget to watch out for Jen and Noflops bringing you reports from the EPT Warsaw soon, which should be a cracker but for now...
