Title: Pokerstars.com EPT Warsaw: Day 1A - At A Glance
Post by: NoflopsHomer on March 11, 2008, 12:04:43 PM
Hello and welcome to Poland for the latest in the non-stop updating month of fabulousness. Today sees the start of the non-televised EPT Warsaw (no cameras allowed due to Polish law) in the the James Bond villain-like basement of the gloriously awesome but expensive Hyatt Hotel. People throwing their chips in, hoping to take back more, include: Dan Carter, Mark Goodwin, Paul Foltyn, Kara Scott and Craig 'the Apple' Hopkins.

Play starts at 2pm, (1pm UK) and we will be there trying to spell some impossible-to-pronounce names and taking bets on what the highest scrabble scores for said names will be.

If you want to follow someone in particular, please let us know on the interactive thread: http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=31890.new#new

And we are off! Jen is off gather photos as we speak.

There's no card system at the moment so we may struggle to find people at first.

Early huge pot for, I think, Christoffer Sonesson with the two guys either side of him.

The board reads Ac Qs Kh Th and all three are all-in.

Matey to his left: Kd Js

Matey to his right: Jd 9c

Christoffer: The free-rolling Qh Jh

River: 8h.

Matey on the right is out, Matey on the left has barely a thousand left and we have an early chip leader.

Thewy has lost about 2,700 having Kc Jc on an all club board against 5c 4c and Ac 3c.

Danny Ryan has knocked out Mateyboy ("He's a french guy," Benjo later says)

Frenchieboy bets 1,600 on a 4c 5s 2h 7d 2c board, Danny raises to 4,200. Frenchieboy moves in and Danny calls.

Frenchieboy: 8c 6c

Danny Ryan: 4d 4s.

A hand between the two American gentlemen below.

4h 2c 8d

The guy in the 9 seat checks, Seat 1 bets 300, Seat 9 makes it 850. Call

Qd

Check check.

Kh

Seat 9 now bets 1,500. Seat 1 makes it 3,000. Seat 9 is clearly pained, but then asks for a total count, which is about 9,000(ish). He decides to just call. Seat 1 confidently shows the Kc then the Js. Seat 9 shows 8c 8s.

Near double-up for Bo 'Legato' Sehlstedt as he eliminates someone-with-his-back-to-me thusly:

Bo raises preflop to something reasonable for the 50/100 level we're currently enjoying.  Two to his left Matey re-raises to a whole 1,000 blue chip.  Think, call.

Flop:  Jc 9c Qd  Bo Sehlstedt checks it to the re-raiser, who as expected bets - 1,500.  Back to Sehlstedt who takes out the 1,500, puts it back, looks a bit like he's going to fold, and then slowly, calmly, ships the lot in.  Call from Matey...

Matey shows Aspades Ac
Sehlstedt shows Qh Qs for a monstrous top set which duly eliminates his opponent who taps the table and wanders off.

Mid Level Two Chip Counts (Selected):

Dario Minieri -- 11,000
Peter Jepsen -- 1,500
Patric Martensson -- 13,200
Woody Deck -- 16,000
Gino Alacqua -- 13,400
Kara Scott -- 9,800
Paul Foltyn -- 10,000
Marc Goodwin -- 8,150
Johan Storakers -- 9,675
Joe Serock -- 8,350

Patrick Bueno -- 9,800
Ramzi Jelassi -- ?6,000
Bo Sehlstedt -- ?17,000
Julian Thew (pictured) -- 1,700.  "This is a treble up!" he announced, semi-happily, pointing at his stack... "Three of us with a flush," he explains wistfully.  I told him he's already on the shortlist for Climber of the Day...

Thewy has doubled up his microstack with a set of Eights against errr...6-2. He has 3,400 now.

Jari Kusta has had a bad day. Going along nicely steadily up to 13k, he then lost over half his stack to this gent with 2h 2d vs Tc Ts on a Td 2c 3s 9h Jd board.

A couple of hands later he raises to 300, Dario Minieri makes it 1200 behind, Jari shoves with Jacks. Dario calls with Ace King, bullet on the flop and he's gone.

***************Break Chat, with your Host - Me*******************

First off, Kara Scott, cool as a cucumber in her Pokerstars outfit and generally enjoying herself immensely... She says that she's had the Aces once, but it was in early position and scored her some blinds, and apart from that it was Gino Alacqua and the guy two to his left who seemed intent on fighting each other over her blind every time.  "I don't care," she said, "If they want to go crazy over my blind when it's only 100..."  Other than that she took a small hit just before the break started after raising with A-Q and finding the shortstack Matey on her left getting it all in against her with 2-2, which stayed good.

____________________________________________________________________________

Dan Carter hasn't played many hands in the early levels.  He lost a few after raising to 225 with Kings early doors, getting two callers and a J-8-6 flop.  He bet 500 at this juncture, and both Mateys called.  The turn brought a 4, and now First Matey bet out 1,500.  One of those 'sigh' moments later and Dan had called, "With the intention of checking on the river, or folding to a bet."  The river wasn't remarkable, but he did fold to Matey's 2,000 bet...

He does say that Dario Minieri is "destroying the table.  It's really annoying because he's never calling a raise on the button, for example, he's always re-raising.  What do I do in the cutoff?"

But First - Leaderwatch

Dario Minieri -- 33,000

Trond Erik Eidsvig -- 22,000

Julian, who wins more races than Michael Johnson, has doubled up again. This time with Ad Kc against Tc Ts on a 4c 4s Js Kh 8d board. Up to 6,700 now.

Craig 'The Apple/Water' Hopkins -- 9,000
Pab (on the same table) -- 8,500

Woody Deck raises it up from early position and a short-stack shoves from the button, saying, "I know I'm getting called."

Woody calls.

Shorty shows: Qd Qc

Woody shows...erm: Th 6h

Board:

8h 3s 4h 3c 7s

A anti-climatic river after so much flop fun. :(

Meanwhile on the next table, the Science Teacher look-alike Johann Storakers raises to 450 from mid-position. The small blind, Samir   Shakhtoor, raises to 900. The big blind, Dennis   Bejedal, then does a evil genius type strokey-beard thing and says, "Johann Storakers..." He repops to 2,500. Johann folds, Samir instantly moves in and Dennis instantly called and there's a split second moment where I and the rest of the table watching, are guessing who has the Kings and who has the Aces. It's Samir though with the bullets and Dennis shows his Kings.

Board:

Kc 7h Aspades (but spread out so there was not two shouts of "Ohhhhh", as in one for each card, but just one very long "ooooooooooooooooooohhhhhhhhhhh!" as the turn and river came 9d 4h

Finally,

Musicwatch

This man listening to his music so loudly that everyone in the poker room can hear it. Our Canadian friends say it is Avril Lavigne's song "Girlfriend" which includes such cutting lyrics as:

You're so fine
I want you mine
You're so delicious
I think about you all the time
You're so addictive
Don't you know what I can do to make you feel alright?

James Honeybone is standing up. Head in his hands, saying, "I should've folded, I know you have Aces," before trying to justify it at the same time rhetorically asking, "I came all this way from New Zealand to fold Kings preflop?"

But this was all after he had been in with Kc Kh against Anders Henriksson's Ad Ac.

A 2c Jd Qh 6d....Ks was rattled off and the Swede had just 650 chips left and whilst Honeybone has about 26k now, he's still trying to replay the hand in his head as to whether he should pass, whilst Anders was probably thinking...

In Brit on Brit action, Terry Cook raises to 700 from the button, Dan Carter makes it 2,200 from big blind, Cook shoves, Carter passes.

Last year's winner, Peter Jepsen is OUT.

Dan Carter said he'd been playing horrible, loose passive poker and getting himself into awkward spots.

Oh, OK, but only because I have sort of a hand to report involving him.  It was just a really long river dwell against the guy pictured below (possibly Julien Boue)... on the river Trond bet out 1,100, and found a raise to 2,500... he thought for ages, ordered an orange juice, told his opponent, "You have the King-Jack of spades..." and passed.  He's still got 24,000 though, so never fear.

Latest table to break - that of Ramzi Jelassi (pictured) who now seems to have melted into the background leading me to assume an early exit.  Usually he waits to get Aces cracked near the bubble, or with just a few tables left, but not today.  Might be re-sat behind a pillar though.  Earlier down to 5k after losing several smallish pots, and trying to work out tablemate James Honeybone who'd called him with Ace high earlier.  "It was good," he admitted sheepishly.

PCA Finalist Joe 'bigegypt' Elpayaa is OUT.

He was all-in on the turn of a 4c Kd 6h Kc Jh with Kh Tc against Frederik Haugen's 4d 4s but missed the river.

Pab managed to miss with Ks Ts on a Qs Js x board somehow. "I'm running bad."

yep, solid n regular,  enough information?

Goooooooooooooo Pab's large intestine!!!!!!!

I'm afraid this has turned out to be a (g)astronomical-sized bokk on our parts as Pab is OUT. He raised 9h 8h from UTG and was called  by the button (who had, the previous hand, been forced to showdown 10 high). The flop came out Th 8s 2s and the other player bet out 1200, Pab had him covered by a little and decided the other player was steaming from the previous hand, Pab set him and was instantly called by Aces. A heart on the turn gave Pab hope, but the river was a blank. Pab then threw out his last thousand or so in with 9-8o, this time against the small blind, only to find he was dominated by Q-8. No help, and I'm guessing it's another 30 hour trip back to Oz for Mr Foltyn.

Weird overbet/call combo of the day:

The gent pictured here is raking in the chips of a player whom the seating plan has as Magnus Petersson but I don't really know.  That's not the focus of this story though, it's the fact that OutMatey raised preflop to 700 (the blinds are 150/300), only to find the button, this guy, moving all in for 8,075.  Back to OutMatey who went into the deepest tank I've seen so far today, eventually getting the clock called on him.  With a few seconds left to go, he eventually, suddenly, whacked his whole 7k stack in.  Which we weren't expecting.  He showed Kd Qs...
... Pictured gent showed 5d 5h.

Flop... Qc 6d 5d
Turn... 8c (some misguided supporter was asking for a Queen for the all in player...)
River:  4c

So down one.  This is on Table Thew, by the way. The table on which he's cemented his Climber of the Day position.

Good ol' Pocket Fives

Julian Thew raises to 900 in mid-position, Multiple EPT casher and twice finalist, Patric Martensson moves in for 6,500 next to him and it's passed back to Thewy who makes the call.

Martensson: Ad Ks

Thewy: Qh Qd

Board:

Kc 2s 8s, but before you can say, "LOL Thewyments", Qs is the turn card. A flush draw you know just won't materialise disappears when the river is the 5h.

I think it's close to a dead heat between Julian and Michael Johnson for races won

Threeway All-In Action!!

And the beneficiary: Stewart Chantler, LHS neighbour of Woody Deck (also featured), in the red stripey shirt looking oddly disinterested as he doubles-up-and-then-some.

What appears to have happened:  Woody raises preflop, Stewart re-raises, a third gent calls all-in, back to Woody who pushes all-in (he covered both players), insta-called by Stewart.

Stewart:  Ahrt Ad
Woody:  Jh Jc
All-in shortMatey:  Aspades Kd

The board came Ten high with no semiflush excitement so Mr. Deck back to 13k and down one more player.

Speaking of young-high rollers, Dario Minieri is OUT. I had spotted him doubling up earlier with A-6 on an A-J-6 board vs A-T but, he's not been able to build on that.

Looks like WPT Barcelona runner-up Ludovic Lacay is a gonna. He and his over-sized headphones are noticeably absent from the table after an A-6s squeeze was felled by K-J.

White socks? Sandals? Yes, it can mean only one thing...Greg Raymer is here, ready to do battle tomorrow.

All you Marek Kolk fans, I'm sorry to say, he's OUT. Kings into Jacks.

Dan Carter Update:

Doing better, as his almost tender grin at the fan he's borrowed from Julian attests.  Apparently he was the beneficiary of a wonderful gift with 7s 2d.  I must first stress that he paid not a penny over the big blind (which he was on) to see the 7d 7c 4s flop, it was only a limp from the button, limp from the small blind...

Anyway it turned out that the small blind, who pushed on the flop and whom Dan instacalled, had 10c 10s but was pounded by The Hammer and is now OUT.

Trond Eidsvig builds his stack...  every time I walk by his table, he's all involved in something.  That's probably why this hand went as it did...

Matey in the Technics shirt raises in mid to 1,100.  Trond re-raises on the button to 2,950.  A call.

Flop:  2d Tc 9s  Now Matey (fig.1, dwelling) bet out 3,500.

Over to the young Norwegian chip magnet.  He does a weird sort of stack count-down, slowly adding up and subtracting from stacks in a way which was mildly incomprehensible, before putting them all in a stack, going from high denom to low denom on top and prodding the stack slowly over the line.

Swiftly finding the decision back on him, TechnicsMatey, who covered Trond, faced calling 11,000 to see his cards.  Head in hands, then fingers laced, then staring at the flop, he eventually made the call with Jh Js, only to see a standing-up Trond showing Ahrt Aspades.  The turn and river came the harmless 8h 3c and it's over to him:

A Fyshe has chips. We guestimate about 40k.

Thewy news/chip count pls..

25k and fan at high power.

Not doing so well  on the same table is James Honeybone, lost a big chunk it seems from his earlier decent 35k stack.

Still on roughly 10k at the moment. He's been moved to the same table as Tronde Eidsvig.

Marc Goodwin has about 13k and it's moving quietly along.

Earlier Jen reported that Casey Kastle, (or is it Kasey Castle?) was the chip leader, but that's no longer the case after he and Robert Flink clashed in a 50k AIPF pot. Kastle (or Castle) held Jacks and Flink had Ace King. Two aces on the board and Kasey (or Casey) went to the break with a shortened 14k stack, swearing with each step up the winding stairs to the bar.

Ok, so as I'm heading back into the tournament area (with Men At Work's classic 'I come from a land down under' blaring out of the speakers, occasionally interrupted by the tannoy asking for a 'Mr Steve', repeatedly which turns out to be sometime EPT tournament director Steve). I spot Christoffer Sonnesson (he of Qh Jh freeroll-greatness much earlier) involved in a pot. Hans Ritburg had bet out on a Kd 5d Qs flop, another player had called before Christoffer shoved in a mammoth-sized moutain of red 500 chips.

Hans called for the rest of his stack and the third player got out of the way. The dutchman showed Aspades Qh for a vunerable second pair, but it was still ahead of Sonnesson's Jd Td drawtacular hand and somehow managed to avoid every bullet.

Craig Hopkins -- 14k

Robert Flink has just taken a sizeable pot off the American Gentleman (name unknown) to his right. He had K-K on a K-9-8-8-x board vs 8-6 to add to his 60k plus stack. I guess he flinks he's doing well... ::)

James Honeybone re-raises a cut-off raiser from the big blind only to find himself being set-in. Having commited half his stack he miserably and reluctantly says call. The OR flips 7-7 and James' mood is instantly lightened as he turns over the non-dominated K-J, a K-J-x flop with another Jack on the turn for good measure and the New Zealander is, like Robert Randolph and the Family Band, 'Going in the right direction.'

Johan Storakers doubles up in the closing minutes of the day... sitting on a fast-becoming-perilous 10,400, I'd already seen him push in preflop once in the preceding ten minutes over the top of a Casey Kastle preflop raise which won him the blinds, antes, and raise... but the double came when he called a raise to 1,500 in the big blind, after small blind Kastle called too.

Flop:  Qd Qc 8h  Check to the p/f raiser who bet out 3,000.  Fold from Kastle, but quick shove from Storakers.  Bit of a dwell... there was 7,750 more to call... which his opponent duly does with Js Jh.  Storakers has the Qh Th.
Turn:  9d   (The quick-on-the-uptake railers mutter that the Ten's no good...)
River: Ts

Which is no good.  Double through for the pro player, and almost no time of the level left for him to lose it back tonight.

Last 5 hands for the night.

Danny Ryan is now sitting next to the newly doubled up Dan Carter (21k thanks to T-T vs A-K), the latter stating, "I couldn't lose a race with Danny next to me and Julian behind me!"

He was referring to Thewy, who has been moved next Craig 'The Apple' Hopkins, both have around 13k at the moment whilst Dana's favourite boy-toy, Tronde Eidsvig continues to pick up a lot of blinds at the end of the day.

Mark Teltscher is here, it's unknown if his sister is going to be playing though.
