Title: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: snoopy1239 on April 13, 2008, 03:20:18 AM One year ago, in 2007, a crack commando unit was sent to blonde poker by a gambling court for a crime they didn't commit. These peeps promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade to the Monte Carlo underground. Today, still wanted by the government, they survive as soldiers of fortune. If you have a problem, if no one else can help, if you can find them, oh, and if you need an live update done, maybe you can hire... The Update-Team.

Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: snoopy1239 on April 13, 2008, 12:11:15 PM Yoohoo all, welcome back to Day 1B of this year's EPT Grand Final. The action is about to get underway, so brace yourselves for an explosion of poker fun and frolics. We've brought our great minds together and concluded that the players are about 65% ready, which means the starting whistle will be blown in about ten minutes.
As we pulled up in our limousine, there was a horde of players waiting outside, and among them were a smattering of familiar, yet eclectic faces including Chris Moneymaker, Paul Testud, Paul Kristofferson, Vanessa Rousso and Hendon Mobber Ram Vaswani. Of course there are many more, one of whom is the online qualifier for our live update sponsors William Hill. We haven't yet acquired his name, but as soon as I spot him, I'll prise the relevant information out of him and keep you updated on his progress. Finally, and perhaps most importantly, word on the norky grapevine is that there are indeed a number of T6 girls on display today. "They are slightly more elegant today," claims fellow blogger Benjo. Bodes well! Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: Djinn on April 13, 2008, 12:12:53 PM Day 1B has yet to commence - I wonder if they are going to do that weird opening show again. My curiosity doesn't stretch as far as actually going in the other room to check, though. As soon as our clock looks like it's counting down to level Two, we'll be off. Again, I am on my card as my laptop refuses to connect, so direct all your difficult requests to Dana and Snoopy, as I need to put aside at least 20 minutes a level for cursing and mashing my keyboard with my fist, while wiggling my mobile connect card until its lame blue light comes on.
In the runup to the start of the action, please enjoy this picture I took of the mirrored ceiling of the Sporting club at the back of the Monte Carlo Bay Resort, complete with little upside-down poker players and nice mosaic floor: (http://blondepoker.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=14754&g2_serialNumber=1) Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: danafish on April 13, 2008, 12:18:00 PM Morning all! Also please note the weird curvy ceiling in here that makes me paranoid that the roof is caving in.

Can you say hello to Neil Channing if you spot him, and tell him his fan club at Mullacott are cheering him on. ;letsparty; Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: Djinn on April 13, 2008, 12:59:14 PM Play has begun, and although I struggled to spot early action other than you might expect with a 10k stack, 90 min clock and 25/50 blinds, Dana says she's seen some odd play already, chips are flying on at least one table.
I saw one flop: it involved Kevin O'Connell raising preflop to 200, getting three callers and a Qc 5s 2s flop. Checks all round, and then Kevin called a 600 bet on the Js turn only to fold on the 9h river to a 1,600 bet. His chip count, therefore: 14,200. Meanwhile the floor was called as a becowboy-hatted latecomer sat down in a seat 9, but didn't give the dealer his seat ticket. "Didn't they give you a card when you bought in?" asked the dealer. "No," replied the jovial American, "I gave them €10k, they didn't give me anything at all." Oops. Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: danafish on April 13, 2008, 01:06:54 PM Good Lord, craziness here already. I just saw a gentleman call off about half his stack with A-Q on a King-high board. The gentleman who raised him obviously had fourth pair. Amazing.
Meanwhile I have found Mr Michael Martin, who says "Hi mom!" for when Ms TheReader appears. He says he's tired, but appears most cheerful. He's right at the back of the room, next to the window, and as I was chatting to him the curtains opened and oh my God the sunshine! I could live here forever and I swear I'd never get used to it. Will most surely get some photos of the awesome, awesome view, as soon as Snoopy lets me have the camera. >:( My first circuit of the cardroom in numbers: Cowboy hats = 4 Pink/fuchsia shirts = 5 Times Steve Frezer pulled my hair = 1 Extra green chips that Maz Nawab has somehow added to his stack = approximately 10 Miniature salamis/woodland animal poos I have consumed = 8 urrrrr :-X Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: Djinn on April 13, 2008, 01:08:44 PM Hello mullacott - no interesting Channing news, as yet. He looks cheery (as one would if sitting in front of the newly-opened curtains with a fantastic view of cliffs/bay etc. (few places don't have that kind of view here in Monaco, actually)) but had no interesting stories. This was corroborated by the dealer :) . He added a tantalising detail all the same: "I chopped one pot with this man next to me. I give me 7/10 and him 8/10 for how we played the hand." Fascinating, no?
Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: snoopy1239 on April 13, 2008, 01:12:04 PM Sadly, I missed the visual treat that prefaced kick-off yesterday, but joy of joys, they staged the same presentation today. The lights went dark, the music played and the stars of the show were revealed. As the PokerStars team waited patiently at the final table, the stage began to move, slowly thrusting them towards the bustling crowd. I couldn't wait to see what these masters of performance had up their sleeve - fireworks, a choreographed dance, trapeze artists?. The table continued budging forward, then a bit more, and then... well, that was it, the players just got out of their seats and walked to their respective tables. I can confirm that the Cirque Soleil will remain in business.
Moments later, the Big TK himself, Sir Thomas Kremser, grabbed the mike to say a few words. At first, I thought he was going to bang out a tune or serenade the room with his lucid vocal chords, but instead he thanked everyone for coming and went through a few of the rules. At one point, he even gave a shout out to his homeys at blondepoker. Word up to that man. Said flop is Aspades 4d 6s. They unspectacularly check it.
Turn - 5d and now Mateygent bets 300. Negreanu and Benoit call, Paul Testud passes. River - 7d and Mateygent bets 700. To which Negreanu makes it 2k. Benoit passes, and Mateygent dwells up, grinning. He seems very pleased with himself. I think it's because Daniel Negreanu's just raised him. The crowd around the table is now unreasonably large for a smallish pot in Level 1. Eventually he folds. How happy he looks to be losing to Daniel Negreanu! Or something. Either somebody spilled their coffee on them, or, more likely, they are today using for the tournament the chips that they were yesterday using in the sit n gos. Yes, as you see he's attracted quite a media frenzy, being famous for at least one thing other than poker...
As I pretended to be much more interested in Runar Runarsson (the guy with the sunglasses looking suspiciously upwards) the media gent opposite me kept a firm track on the tennis star's face and a floorman or security person came up to me and insisted I turn my flash off. I was then sort of watched as I went to the nearby tables, and felt it only prudent not to annoy him on that round. Incidentally, all this concern being shown about Boris at the table (i.e. Stop the Flashing or he Might Get Distracted in his First Big Tournament) seems counterintuitive - he's surely creating a lot of media buzz for Pokerstars and must be used to the paparazzi blinding him with their cameras by now. I do, however, feel for the other players at the table. As I joined his table, he was seemingly praying to the poker gods with his hands clasped before him. With a 7h-5d-Th Flop on board, Max had called an initial bet of 1.2k, only to find Mateyboy push all-in for 8k behind him, with the initial aggressor following suit with an all-in of his own. Hesitant to fold at first, Max did eventually pass, likely pleased to see the aggressor turn over 5h-5c for a set of Fives. Surprisingly, the all-iner could only muster a Ac--Kc (he understandably smirked when he saw how much trouble he was in), and quickly exited stage left as the turn and River dealt out blanks.

He currently has 8,725 after doubling up an opponent. "Do I have to show if I call?" asked Frieberg as his foe pushed all-in for 1,950 on a 2c 8d Qc Flop. The answer, not surprisingly, was yes, but this didn't seem to deter the American, Jon calling with Ac Kh and being shown Aspades Qh. At this point, Gavin Griffin piped in with a "You would have folded if you didn't have the Ace of Clubs," but that joke almost turned into a reality, the Turn bringing a 4c before a 7s River left one player mighty relieved.
Also on this table is a sunglassed up to the max Joris Jaspers with 17,925, and a battered and bruised Gavin Griffin with just 2,450. Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: jpean on April 13, 2008, 03:55:24 PM Ho are Arnaud Mattern and Elky please ?? any photo ?

Mickey Wernick was on around 22k at one point, but lost a lot of chips with a full house, much to his own understandable disgruntlement. Before the Aces hand against, I believe, Spaniard Daniel Mangas, Mickey flopped a full house with Pocket Sevens on a J-J-7 board. Mickey checked, before smooth calling an 800 bet. 2k was then called on the Five Turn, before Mateyboy re-raised Mickey's 4k bet all-in on the King River. Mickey rhetorically asked, "The King helped you then?" before folding, his comments leading to the revealing of a most welcome K-J. Good fold, Mr Worm. Half of the tournament is now on a 10 min break, half will return in 45 minutes, just like yesterday.

Manuel Palanca -- 9,350 Mats Iremark -- 25,250 Andrew Teng -- 25,850 Paul Bracken -- 13,500 Manuel Palanca was complaining of a poor run of cards. "I've only won three pots," he said. "One was a walk, the other I had 9-2 in the blind and flopped a two, and the other, I can't remember." Manuel then went on to, perhaps with a touch of understandable envy, highlight Mats Iremark's good fortune. "This guy is unbeatable at the moment. He doubled up within the first level with Aces when someone pushed in with A-K on a King high Flop." Also finding life tough is Paul Bracken, but he did just pull out a nice bluff on fellow Brit Andrew Teng. With a Flop of 5h-Ac-Jd, Andrew check-called a 1.2k bet before check-folding to a 3k bet on the Tc Turn. Andrew revealed As-Kh, confident that he was behind and perhaps hoping for a free look at Paul's hole cards. Happy to oblige, Paul proudly flipped over 9h-8h. Sadly, Boris is out. "You cannot be serious!" I hear you cry, but unfortunately we are. It was a back and forth rally that saw Boris' stack go up and down all day (well, just down actually), but after a series of shots that trickled over the net, Boris finally double faulted when he pushed all-in with Ace high on an 8-8-8-Q board. When Boris made the bet, the umpire stated that his chips were still behind the line. "It was on the line!" he replied with a squeal. Either way, his opponent called with a Pocket Pair, and after the raggy River, Boris was sent back to the changing room. I approach a table just when Joris Jaspers is stacking the result of winning a pot, cards being reshuffled, or when Vicky Coren gets a walk in her big blind (both of these heart-stopping events have occurred) but just now I approached Table Thor Hansen just as Thor was getting his remaining stack in the middle.
He'd moved all in for 5,125 into a pot of around 6k with the board standing 5s 6c Jc 9c. His opponent took a surprisingly long time to call, seeing as he held Kc 3c for the second nuts and Thor had 9d 9h. By no means drawing dead, the board failed to pair and sent the experienced Scandie to the rail. My first exit experience of Day 1B. And his, too. Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: snoopy1239 on April 13, 2008, 07:56:53 PM One encounter that I almost forgot to retell was that of William Martin and Bahamas EPT casher and enigmatic Frenchman Jacques Zaicik. With the Flop reading 3c Jd 4d, Jacques bet out 3,600 only to be raised to 10,475 by Martin, the youngster putting his tournament life on the line. As William kept his nerve whilst resting his head on his hand and elbow, Jacques leaned back in his seat and folded his arms, clearly perplexed by the decision ahead. After a minor bout of table talk, Jacques ultimately found the 6,875 to small to resist and firmly planted his sole column of chips onto the green of the baize. William flicked over his cards, although one got stuck allowing just a Queen to be revealed. "Queens" deduces Jacques correctly as he reveals a dominated A-J. A 5c Turn and 8d River resulted in an adrenalin pumped "Yes" from Martin, whilst Jacques simply released a designated sigh as just a couple of thousand in chips was returned to him.

Chad Brown raised to 500 utg (blinds still 100/200), called in late position by Mats Iremark and in the big blind by Paul Testud. Flop: Ahrt 3d 6h Testud checks, Brown bets 700, called by Iremark, but that gets rid of Testud. Turn: Td Both players check. River: Jd Now Chad Brown checks and then thinks about the 5k bet at him. For a while. But not an unreasonable length of time given that his stack couldn't have been more than c.22k. He passes, and the chips are pushed over to the tricky Swede who is so unexpressive in victory and defeat that he appears botoxed. Pictured: Testud and Brown. Neither of them won this hand. I caught this from Bueno betting 800 on a Qh 8s Qc 3s board, only to face a check-raise from Dcal. The 2k lay there for a minute, while it was the American doing the talking, unexpectedly: "You got a Queen? Full house?" as he toyed with the 11,100 he had left behind. Bueno called. The river brought the Kd and another suspiciousish 2k bet out from Didech. Bueno passed. Most of the room had already left, though (isn't there something a little sad about winning when no one can see?)

Looked like there had been a bit of betting at some point before the turn, though.
The River - 2c - and Vicky, first to act, considers it for some time. Eventually she leans forward and says, "Do you have the Aspades, is that in your hand?" Very sensibly replies Talal, "I can't tell you that." She checks, and Talal turns over Jd Jc. Vicky picks up her cards, 9s Ts, and shakes them slowly as if admonishing them for not being the winning hand. Unfortunately, my arrival seemed to have jinxed him, as I popped my beady eyes around the corner just in time to see poor Faraz being dealt a good old fashion rogering by New Zealand maestro and former Aussie Millions Champ Lee Nelson. It all went crazy on a Kd 6d Js Flop, a flurry of raises seeing Lee Nelson make the final push with Ad 8d. Faraz made, what may have been a near obligatory call in an already meaty pot with Jc Ts, but was ultimately unable to survive the 2s and... wait for it.... 9d River. When I first saw the photo of Faraz, I thought he might be the more vocal type who wears his heart firmly on his sleeve, but, unexpectedly, he remained cool in defeat and took it like a man. Lee Nelson, meanwhile, who even rose from his seat on the Turn and consequently interrupted his own massage, seemed truly relieved to have survived his all-in, and, along with his masseuse (Lee must have been paying well) was all smiles by the time he raked in the pot. Let me start with this photo - this is Winning Matey at the end of the hand (not wearing a green feathery hat - just an awkwardly placed plant: (http://blondepoker.com/gallery/main.php?g2_view=core.DownloadItem&g2_itemId=15041&g2_serialNumber=1) I arrived at the table as the eventual victor was dwelling in front of a Qd Kh Th flop considering calling a 5,500 bet. He did. Turn: 2d WinnerMatey checked again, and this time faced something in the region of 7k. Back to this guy who called, leaving himself 6,500, which garnered a few raised eyebrows. River: 5d Now check once again. A reluctant check behind as the Loser shows down Qh Qc.... and is shown the victorious, and clearly surprising to the loser, Ad Td... Now here's the photo of the player who lost the hand, on the left of Neil Channing. The reason I didn't crop Channing out of this hand which has nothing to do with him, is twofold. One, he said, "I am photogenic," or something along those lines, and Two, I'd counted his stack at 25,200, when it was actually 25,100 and he said, "Do you think that would be good enough for Bloomberg?" Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: danafish on April 13, 2008, 09:59:54 PM Yes, and that extraordinary Mickey Wernick hand.
I arrive just in time to see a Qc 4h 2d flop, and to see that Mr Trousers Of The Day (who I have discovered is called Michiel Brummelhuis) has bet 1600 and that a Mateyboy to Mickey's immediate right has made it 4k. Mickey sighs and checks his hole cards. THEY'RE ACES!!! Sorry, got a bit excited there, but at this point Roberto Romanello taps Mickey on the shoulder. "I'm just in a hand here," says Mickey. Roberto comes over to where I'm standing. "Didn't realise he was in a hand there." MICKEY FOLDS!!! Ahem. Says Roberto, "Did you see his pass?!?! He passed Aces!!!" Mr Brummelhuis-Trousers calls. Mickey gets up and comes over to us. "I passed Aces. I trap-checked and the guy bet, but then the other guy went over the top." Meanwhile Mr Brummelhuis and Mr Mateyboy check down the 8d turn and the 5s river. Michiel Brummelhuis - J-J Mateyboy - 8-T An almighty sigh from Mickey... He raised to 1k from the cut-off with Tens before smooth calling an extra 1.2k re-raise from the small blind. The small blind led out on the 8-9-J Flop, Manuel pushed all-in and Mateyboy called with Kings. Manuel Turned a Seven for the straight and proceeded to jump onto the table swinging his trousers over his head whilst chanting "I am a golden God, I am a golden God!". Okay, maybe that last bit was made up.

Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: Djinn on April 13, 2008, 10:36:40 PM Eeeeeexit at the hands of Ed de Haas, one of the biggest names in poker.
He was playing against the gent pictured below (anyone identify) who, if one was going to judge him by a quick look, one might think to be a pretty solidish player, maybe cautious - after all this is nearly the last level of the day and he had a little over his starting stack. Of course, it's absolute rubbish to make such conclusions based on nothing at all, as this hand illustrates perfectly: Ed de Haas raised preflop to 1,150, called by the small blind. Flop: 4c Qc 7d SB bet out 3k pretty fast, but not as fast as de Haas called it. Turn: 8d Now he bet out 4k, got raised by 13k, moved all in (the only raise option left to him, and it wasn't a lot), call. de Haas: Ahrt Qh SB Matey: Kc 2c The river - a blank (considering) 3d and the stacked player just kind of sat there shell-shocked for a few moments (which is when I took this picture - discreetly and without flash, of course) before wandering off. Then, like at school when someone leaves the room and everyone else talks about him, they did that. That's kind of how I think of these pics of Marc 'Mr. Cool' Goodwin. Earlier he seemed engaged in his surroundings, but now, midway through Level Six, he looks to have sort of given up. Note how the mustard jacketed guy in the background is moving at a normal pace, therefore blurry sans flash, while Goodwin seems to have been preserved in perspex. Flop - 4d 8d 7d and it checks to Neil, who promptly bets 6.5k. To which MB9 promptly announces all in. MB Ginger gets out of the way, and so too does Neil. He's now down to 22k or so. PIE CHART TAKE 2: AN APOLOGY (http://www.europeanpokertour.com/images/EPT4_montecarlo_nationalities.jpg) I hope you all feel bad now. It sort of reminds me of watching the Open University at home when I was off sick from school - like these guys should be pointing to it with a stick - (http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42356000/jpg/_42356423_man203.jpg) Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: snoopy1239 on April 13, 2008, 11:41:49 PM Ms Mad Harper of Pokerstars Presents... I'm like a child on Christmas Day who has been forced to wait till the evening before getting his presents. We'd been wondering what happened to Dario Minieri and, on closer inspection of the bottle, it would appear as though the little fella has gone and got himself trapped inside. He must have spotted something shiny in there and wandered in aimlessly. We must get him out, there are Porsches to be driven and supernovas to be achieved for heaven's sake! Thank God that bald chap spotted him before it was too late. Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: snoopy1239 on April 13, 2008, 11:59:58 PM Steve Paul-Ambrose, who, I believe, won the Caribbean Poker Adventure a year or two back, was last spotted walking away from the table, down the hallway and towards the exit with a face like a smacked bottom. I've never claimed to be the brains of Britain, but I'd say that suggests he's out.
Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: snoopy1239 on April 14, 2008, 12:05:14 AM A few quick chippy counts:
Mickey Wernick -- 11,575 Paul Bracken -- 19,850 Mike McDonald -- 10,950 Jonothon Butters -- 19,625 Manuel Palanca -- MIA Dan Dedich -- 22,000 Marc Goodwin -- 40,000 Rumit Somaiya -- 13,175 Vicky Coren -- 16,750 Neil Channing -- 25,800 Surinder Sunar -- 22,200 Glen Chorny -- 38,850 Michael Martin -- 80,000 Andrew Teng -- 23,425 Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: danafish on April 14, 2008, 12:08:44 AM Manuel Palanca - 22k (his table was broken so forgive Snoopy's declaring him out, is most easily done in the Monte Carlo Poker Factory)
Rumit Somaiya - 13k. Oh no, hang on! As I'm standing there chatting with him, confessing that I haven't done any chip counts in a while so I can't really tell him who the chip leaders are, that sort of thing, a Mateyboy makes it 1300 utg and Rumit is the sole caller. They both check the 6h Th 6d flop, and then UTG MB checks the 5s turn - Rumit bets 1800 and takes it. "How much have you got now?" say I. "Is that 15k?" Says Rumit - "If it is, that's the first time all day!" Rumit Somaiya - 15.4k, and beaming. Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: snoopy1239 on April 14, 2008, 12:09:33 AM This isn't particularly relevant, but Gus Hansen was last seen chatting to railer Isabelle Mericer, and, unless my eyes deceived me, I believe I saw some cheeky Danish hand on French bum action. Unbelievable! She said she was holding out for me, and then she does this to me. I'd been beating women off with a stick thinking we were gonna hook up, and now her and Gus are getting jiggy in the cardroom! Bah, humbug, I run so bad! >:(
Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: danafish on April 14, 2008, 12:16:57 AM We are literally minutes away from the end of play, at which point we intend to scarper at high speed to avoid the miserable 45-minute wait for a taxi in front of the casino that we had to endure last night. In fact, the clock has stopped! Snoops says they've cleared the press out of the tournament area for the last 5 hands so we are so out of here...
Mad Harper says no chip counts or payout until tomorrow :( but we'll be back bright and early with all that good stuff. See you for Day 2 at 1pm (12 noon GMT)... ;stickaforkinme; Title: Re: PokerStars EPT Monte Carlo: Day 1B - Interactive Post by: jpean on April 14, 2008, 12:18:17 AM ok
