Title: Bluesq.com GUKPT Manchester: Day 1A - At A Glance
Post by: NoflopsHomer on April 24, 2008, 03:24:22 AM
It's been so long since a GUKPT with all the EPT's, DTD's and Irish Openies in between but today we return to the fantastic fun-filled frolics that we find have become a firm fixture of the GUKPT.   Last year was the famous and frenetic final between the friendly pairing of Barry Neville and El Blondie himself Dave Colclough, the latter ultimately finding a few extra gears for a favourable victory. He made another final table tonight, that of the Omaha, alongside a fair few others in a small but fun event.

So folks, let us know if there's anyone you want following and we'll do all that is feasibly possible in hunting and finding them, whether they be friends or family.

Finally, play will start at 2pm and we'll be there fighting our way through the crowds for facts for you guys.

Farewell til then!!

(My 'f' key is now bust :()

Ok, players have just been called to the seats, whilst I was chatting to a very sleepy Jen, whose craptacular car finally gave up on her last night and left her fretting. Meanwhile, with the Norwegian Poker Championships starting next week at DTD, a few of the Scandies have turned up here today, including Henning Granstad and Andreas Hoivold. Certainly makes the field more interesting...

I hear a cry of "All-in" and then more importantly, "Call!!"

I rush over, but the board reads Ad Ts 3s Qh Jh and both players show a king. Dull dull dull. Curse you flamboyant poker players for making me care!!!

Alan 'bigalhx1' Armitage was looking grumpy after an 8s 5s 4d 6s board was added by the Aspades river, and an unwelcome 1,600 bet into a 4,000 pot which he passed to.

James Akenhead, playing short-handed at the moment...

Michael "Don't call me Beppe" Greco is OUT.

He was seen leaving the poker room saying, "So f**king sick..."

Intrigued, I followed the action back to his former table where I discovered he'd raised to 500 (blinds 25/50), 12/05 who we are told is John Morris called and then bet 1,500 into the 1,000 pot on a K-9-8 board. Greco flat-called, and then again for another 2,000 on the 6 turn. Finally his opponent set him in on the 7 river, Greco called with Aces only to discover a got-there-in-the-end Q-T.

Arguments have broken in the media room whether he played the hand right. Did he raise was too much preflop, and should he have perhaps pushed or even folded the turn instead?

Morris is now (major) with chips. Note his jealous neighbour also

Deers in headlights, Jen Mason and Steve Holden.

Gurinder Purewal, he of back-to-back dtd final table fame just lost most of his stack with Tens to Aarun Bernard's Aces on an Eight-high board.

Chris Bruce pulls me aside and says, this is what we're up against, "Seat 1, (indicating George McDonald) raises to 300 with A-K, Seat 2 (Richard Simmons) flat-calls  with 9-9 and then Seat 3 (who I think is Rob Ellis) decides to flat-call with Aces). The blinds come along and the Nines bet the 8-5-3 flop and the Aces raise, take it down and show, but why wouldn't you want to make a bigger pot preflop?!?"

Updates on Sam Trickett plz

He just lead out for 525 in a big multiway pot pot on a 9c 4s 7d board, but Sex Pistols look-alike Alan Kenny moved all-in for another 2,025. Everyone folded back to Sam who huffed and puffed and through away his 9d. Kenny showed 4h 4d.

The Norwegians are suffering mixed fortunes, Askild Hansen just doubled up through Tuan Lee with 7s 7c on a Ts Qh 7d 2h 9h board versus Kh Kc, all-in on the flop. Peter Kvisthammer looks to be out while Petter Martinsen has lost a few with a bluff, he's wary of the 'Aggressive British Calling'.

Ketu Nathwani bets out 175 on a Qd 7s 2d flop, Dave Smith and Richeo call, Sunny Chattha raises to 875. Everyone folds.

Sunny shows 5s 3s.

10 minute break.

Ketu Nathwani bets 525 on a Kc 4h 7c board, Dave Smith does what he does best and calls, PocketLady also calls.

5c

Ketu checks, Dave Smith bets 700, PL folds, Ketu calls.

2c

Ketu check folds to a 2,500 bet.

Reyaaz Mulla raises to 525 from early position, Jen re-raises to 2,000. Everyone folds to a girl.

David Mitchell (not from Peepshow sadly :() check/calls the whole way with Eights on a 6h 8c Jh 7s Qd board and finds himself miles ahead of Andy Bradshaw's got-there-in-the-end-but-not-quite-what-I-wanted Ahrt Qh.

Giovanni Nervo has doubled up with Ac 9c on 3s 9d 2d Qs 9h board against David Rudling's Ahrt Ks. Looks like it was all on the flop.

Jen has doubled up, skillfully playing Aces perfectly by managing to have someone else pick up Kings and then be willing to get all-in preflop. Ok, a little more to it than that, Reyaaz Mulla raised to 550 from the CO, Jen made it 1,900 from the button and John Heath made it 6,700 from the small blind. Mulla passed, Jen pushed and Heath called all-in. Bricky board.

Askild Hansen is also swimming along nicely, like a child skipping in the park, he's just pushed his stack over 40,000 holding Aces against Ace King on an Ace High board.

Here he is, harnessing all his poker power into his eyebrows.

Ray Wyre has bizarrely doubled up against previous 'cannot miss king' John Morris.

They saw a 2-4-8 flop, Morris bet out, Wyre shoved for a huge amount, (10kish we reckon), Morris called and was ahead with A-Q, as Wyre showed caught-in-the-trap-Oh-I-thought-you'd-fold T-9. That was until a straight-inducing Jack turn and vomiting-reaching 7 river for a lucky straight.

"Poker," as Rolf Slotboom would say, "It's a shkill game."

Marc Goodwin has doubled up, all-in with Aces against Ace Queen on a Queen high flop.

John Morris continues to be involved in the biggest pots, he called a flop bet on a 9-2-3 board, before being the shorter stack then c/raised all-in on the Jack turn. Morris went for it with 9-5, but was in trouble vs pocket Tens. Blank on the river and he's lost another 20k or so and is back down to 35k.

******************1-hour break for dinner*****************

Jen may be smiling in this picture, (Nik Persaud paid for her and Tony to have a massage) but she gave away a few chips earlier, betting the turn of a 9h 5d 3h 6c board and then betting again, 3.5k on the 4d river. She received a nasty surprise, though, being check/raised to 10k which is when she gave up the pot.

During the dinner break she said she'd been very impressed by the gent three to her left, who'd folded the nut-flush to her on the river of a K-5-2-K-x board when he'd bet the river and she'd set him (she was holding 5-5). "Maybe I should've just min-raised..."

Askild Hansen continues to do well, he bet out 1,200 on a Kd Kc 8h flop, Terrence Owens made it 3,200, the Norwegian thought for a while before adding another 10k on top to elicit a quick fold that he probably surmised he would get.

Ac 9h 5s

Laurance Houghton bets 1,250. Dominic Kay raises to 3,500 and Houghton flat-calls. Kay then checks the Kd before folding to a 4,750 bet.

Paul Parker has been quietly going under the radar in that traditional Parkery sort of way. Though, he'll happy tell you, in full detail, any single hadnd you wish to ask about.

"I limped for 50 with Kings, and Reyaaz Mulla raises to 250, and I know his range is huge, so I decide to just call, but before I can, someone else makes it 750. Now I'm only getting action from Aces if I re-raise again here so I decide to just flat-call and Mulla folds. Now the flop comes Ten-high and he bets out 1,000, I flat-call and now surely even Aces will slow down here. The turn is an Ace and he checks, and so do I. I now think he most likely has Queens or Jacks and I can value bet the river. A Queen comes on the river and it goes check/check, but I think I played it right."

How is Jen's stack ?

0

Stuck with Tony Phillips constantly re-raising her preflop and also trying to float her on a T-T-3 board with K-Q against her 6-6 and then hitting the K turn took a chunk from her stack. She also had her K-Q rivered by K-T for more chips before knocking out Sam Trickett with 4-4 vs A-J, then finally she pushed with A-K into Michael Porter's Q-Q and missed.

One of the biggest pots though has just occured though.

Waseem Shahid was all-in preflop and a sidepot was happening between Mark Goodwin and Askild Hansen.

2h 7h 8h

Marc quickly moves in, and the crowd grows.

Askild thinks, the crowd grows more.

Askilds keeps thinking, clever locals set-up small amenity shops so that crowds have somewhere to get snacks from whilst they wait.

Askild calls. Marc flips over Aspades Ac ahead but vunerable as Askild shows Jh Jc. Waseem shows 9h 9c.

9d

Now Waseem has the lead and Askild picks up an extra 3 outs.

6c

Marc dodges all the bullets and wins the decent-sized side pot of about 30,000 whilst Waseem wins the main pot of around 10,000.

George 'Wellchief' McDonald (who still has nightmares about folding KK preflop last year to Dave Colclough last year) has been going errr, well again erm, chief. He's on about 45k having won two nice pots with Aces then knocked a player out with A-K vs A-Q. Here he is with Liv Boeree.

Marty Smyth -- 27k

Askild Hansen has just been knocked out by Marc Goodwin leaving Petter Martinsen as the last Norwegian in. But evenhe's just been crippled getting it all-in with T-4 vs K-J on a T-4-K board, only to be hit by a rivered King. Astute viewers will remember that he was also the slightly tipsy guy who ended up renaming Nick Slade as 'Nick Salad' in Dortmund last year...

Joey Lovelady has taken out another player Peter Hutton was the unlucky victim ... His  Ts Tc was no match for Loveladys  Qh Jd

Mind you, all the chips went in on a  Js 8d 3h flop

Lovelady now has 45k

Sunny Chattha has escaped!!!

Well sort of. The small blind limped and Sunny checked 9-8o in the big blind. The flop came a beautiful Q-J-T which they checked. The small blind led out on the 5 turn, and Sunny raised, the small blind flat-calling. The river paired the Queen, and the small blind checked and showed his cards before Sunny could act. Sunny said he'd have checked behind anyway, despite seeing the A-K of the small blind. He lost around 9k, though probably should've lost his whole stack on the turn. He's now short, having just been made to fold from the cut-off due to Tuan Lee's re-raise from the small blind.

Another player who was lucky to hold onto his stack was Jonathan McCann, he hadn't see Clark Watson already move-in and was forced to minimum raise from the 5k all-in short stack push to 10k. Enough to make Marty Smyth fold A-Q in the big blind. Clark showed 9-8o and was slightly relieved to see K-J, and even more delighted to see the board come out Q-7-7-8-7 in his favour. Although Marty might be rueing that decision...

Marc Goodwin looks to be the chip leader with around 80k now.

Yep, nasty one here, George raises to 2.3k, Marc makes it 10k more. George shoves and Marc snap calls. George was wondering if he could've just check/folded the flop.

Askild Hansen is smarting still from his exit, there was a raise to 1,800 and Marc Goodwin called before Hansen pushed for 16,000. The original raiser folded and Marc 'snap-called' ("Please make sure you mention he snap-called" said the Norwegian) with K-Q and won the race vs 9-9.

John Morris' rollercoaster has come to an end, from 65k and chip leader in level 2 to OUT. He called all-in 5d Qc Jc 9h board with 9s Tc only to slap bank run into Willie Tann's Kh Th.

Steve Holden Just won 2 nice pots, firstly he doubled up form 12k to 24k with  Td Tc v  8c 8d

AND THEN

Paul Parker raises pre and gets one caller in Steve, Flop comes  Ks Qs 2h Steve open shoves the flop and Paul dwelled but called .... On the backs and Paul has  Ac Kd, but Steve was holding  Ts Js

Turn  Jd

River  9s

Giving Steve a straight flush and almost 50k in chips and knocking Paul to the felt.

Ste King looks like he's out. I'll get the Joey count after the break.

Des Jonas just went out with Ad Ts vs 6d 6c.

One other exit I forgot to mention earlier was that of Sunny Chattha, who had his A-Q outdrawn by Tuan Lee's A-J after a brutal T-8-7-9-K board.

Liv Boeree is OUT.

Michael Aherne check/raised all-in for not much more on a Jc Qs Qc 9d board when Alan McLean bet 4k, which Marty Smyth called. McLean instantly folded, but Marty Smyth thought, or at least I thought he was thinking, but it turned out he thought that McLean was still thinking and it hadn't entered his thought process that McLean had thought better of it and folded.

My head hurts.

Anyway, while this was all going on Michael Ahearne already had his Qd showing to spectators in a pre-emptive, I'm feeling good about this hand sort of way. Marty then finally realised action was on him, saying, "I call, I have to." He then proceeded to turn over Tc 8c for the straight. Michael was seemingly dazed and confused when he showed Qd 3c and then suddenly understood that he was, horror of horrors, actually behind. The 7d river changed nothing and more chips went to the Irish man.

dunno why but this amused me so much.

RichEO, (17.5k btw) pointed out something else that Michael said just before they turned over the cards, he said, "If you haven't got a Queen, you're behind!"

Apparently not.

Joey Lovelady -- 37k

Paul 'Got Milk?' Gardner has just knocked out Mike Williams with Kings vs Queens.

Joey Lovelady has lost most of his stack, on a Q-2d-3d-7-T board, his opponent, Kujinder Sidhu (a friend of Garinder Purewal's) calling with Kd Td on the river.

Sidhu was at it again soon after, he lead out on the river of a 4d 4s 5h Td Jd board, Maz Amiri moved all-in and Sidhu instantly called, Maz showing the runner runner flush Ad 2d, but Sidhu already held 5s 5c for the flopped house and had caught two perfect turn and river cards.

Play has now finished for the day. We'll see you all again tomorrow at 2pm.
