the APAT UK Forum Championship is in G Casino, Blackpool on July 19th & 20th. 

The following forums are already putting teams in

- Gutshot

- Eat My Stack

- AWOP

- punters Lounge


10 players per team,  Seats are £50 per player

I need to reserve some places for blonde teams in the next week or so. How many depends on demand

For the event all the prize money is going back to the prize pool and there is an added GUKPT seat for individual winner and £1k for the winning forum, which we'll distribute via a blonde card-room comp.

Hi all - I know that Kin' has PM'd all team members with details of a hotel that I have found close to the casino....call them direct on 01253 402642 for £70 rate as it's £80 if you book on-line.

is it near the casino?

Anything that doesn't involve petrol to get there would be good.

It's a luxury hotel.

It is - but that doesn't stop us getting a taxi to the casino via somewhere else.  Certainly not environmentally-friendly, obviously expensive, but definitely worth it.

Don't want to rain on any parades but have you confirmed with Des that Blonde (or anyone else) can have more than 10 people?

At last count (per the thread on the APAT forum) there were around 17 teams showing interest. At an assumed maximum capacity of 200 this would seem to indicate a total of 20 teams with 10 players each.

All in hand.

blonde owns Desmonds soul, we also have (tucked away in a safe deposit box ) photographic proof of him actually buying a round !! Now he wouldnt want those pictures circulated would he ... it would cost him a fortune. :)

The format of the event has not been finalised yet, so nothing is 'in hand' as such.  However we should have some further answers after the weekend when we look at the details.   I'm surprised that nobody has given any thoughts on the format.

Of course if you want to add a Sunday tourney for PLO/PLO8/RRP then the LPM will be there!

I meant 'in hand' as both you and Tighty are aware that blonde intends to enter two teams. 

As for the minor details as to how the competition will work, we're waiting to hear his master's voice... ;D

As for the format, I'd assumed (obviously incorrectly) that it would effectively be a standard freezeout tournament (everyone playing to cash for themselves) with players getting points for how far they go for their team for the team element.

This is how every other team event I've played in (I've not played many, granted) have worked.

For the love of God don't put the idea into Des's head that APAT should be doing something more creative and innovative than this, who knows what it'd end up as.  :o

the team event I played at Cincinattis a couple of years back had a good format - it effectively ran as lots of STT's, with no players from the same team on the same table.  Points were awarded depending on finishing position (minus points for the first out, and quite top heavy).  The winner of each STT got a small cash prize (effectively the buy-in back).  The top 'x' scoring teams proceeded on to the next stage of the comp.  Don't remember what that was though as my team didn't make it :(  **BRAG WARNING** (although I did win my STT  :)up)

I quite liked the format and it cut out any allegations of collusion (or indeed any temptation to collude)

10 x 20 man comps

running 5 comps at a time

give 5 hours of play for  a 20 man comp gives lots of play

points awarded for places knocked out (ends team play on day 1)
team prize awarded

winners of table all get £100
winners and runners up all come back for days 2 (no points for team)

20 player comp nice slow structure and game on 6-8 hours of play on day 2


only fair way to run a team comp

unless you want to encourage team chip passing


this way you get your team mates railing you as you play aswell

All this assumes that each forum puts in ONE 10 person team each. If this is an inter-forum challenge then the playing field must be level. If a forum can submit more than one team that gives that forum an unfair advantage in the 'best forum' stakes.

Oh, and while I can see some validity to each 20 person comp winner getting £100...(which is, I assume, the £1000) it's not the same as 'advertsied' above.

To avoid any chip passing, surely 20 x 10 man comps with 1 person per team in each would be better? It also means that there is no table balancing to do (10 x 2 tables...ugh) making things run smoother.

So to sum up....much the same but with some minor alterations.

DAY 1

20 x 10 man STTs all running at the same time to the same clock
Structure the blind levels to give ample play, say 6 hours.
Points awarded for places knocked out (ends team play on day 1)
FORUM prize of £1000 awarded to FORUM with best points.

DAY 2
STT Winnners and runners up all come back
40 player MTT nice slow structure and game on 6-8 hours of play on Day 2 to award individual cash prizes from buy-ins (20 paid, I assume) & GUKPT seat etc.

I would see this working as the number of teams x 10 person matchplay STTs on day 1 with points being allocated in ascending order of exit (1pt to 10pts).  The table winners will return to play on day 2 in MTT format and play down to a final table, where points will again be allocated in ascending order of exit - essentially deciding the Team Championship. 

The winner of the day 2 MTT will win the GUKPT seat plus Gold Medal, with the prize money split evenly amongst all ten team members. The winning forum itself would take the additional prize plus the Cup.  Top three forums get paid. 

Just my thoughts, but will consult and clarify over the weekend.

Someone WILL drop out, FACT. Put me down as first reserve and dr\w, I will step into the missing persons spot. In the unlikely event that no one drops out I will be seen riding donkeys (there's a first) with a face full of candy floss.

If we're going to have a team name, I suggest 'Donkeys and Candy Floss'

don't know if time will allow, but would be good if the top two players from each STT could play on day two...

unless I'm misreading it I hate the format. can I clarify? so people travel from all over the country to play 1 STT and unless they win it that's all they play over 2 days, is that right?

also you'd have several forums with no involvement at all on day 2

so my alternative to the one I hate.

if you want to go the STT route which seems like the way to avoid collusion there's no reason why you can't fit in 3 rounds of STTs on day 1 with each structured to last 2 1/2 to 3 hours, points scored for finishing positions.

play a 4th round on the sunday afternoon and then the top points scorer from each forum goes forward to play in a 20 player MTT with maybe double points for finishing positions.

Very good point Dan.  Some thinking needs to be done on this, let's go round again.

Can we not just have a normal tournament with points awarded for the place you get knocked out in?  Team with the lowest score wins.

Top whatever (7 looks good) makes sense, and if a team has fewer players than that, they'll be penalised by the missing players counting as scoring the worst possible score.

ok, here's my plan, someone should put me in charge, I'm that good.

20 teams of up to 10 players each compete in 2xMTT, one on saturday, one on sunday.

in each tournament the top 7 finishers score points for their team.

winning team = best combined score from the 2 days

best individual score over the 2 days wins the added prizes

prize money split between the 2 comps so effectively 2x£25 FO


if running it as an MTT there's no reason to run to a standard APAT format which would leave a lot of players, and probably some forums, not involved on day 2. better to speed up the structure and run 2 comps so that everyone has an interest in day 2

I read on the apat forum yesterday that its going to be run like a normal apat tourney with 200runners as an mtt anyone no if this has been confirmed yet.My only other thought was although its probably to late now anyway was could increase the buy in and 1stly play a stt leading to a ft of 10 to determing winner of team game (this would have to start at 12 probablt and plan to finish for 8 at latest) then could play a mtt as well as a 2 day tourney on sat night sun allday giving everyone a good amount of poker.Which ever way its done going to be good weekend on the piss in blackpool let the poker gods (tighty and des) decide the rest  :)up

the consensus was that STTs wouldn't give enough value for players to travel for the weekend , so it is an MTT at this point..to be confirmed when we close off the discussions.  APAT rules in operation, including collusion rules.  Policed as per every tournament.  The individual added value prize should keep players honest.

With a GUKPT seat up for grabs I can't see how anything other than an MTT could work. Would be nice if team members were split at the start but after that it's just down to luck.

If I'm right the team prize is a freeroll tournament for that teams forum? Everyone's paid £50 to enter and the prizes are paid out normally + there's the GUKPT seat.

But the "Team" aren't playing for the prize pool. The prize pool is for individuals as is the GUKPT seat if it's played as an MTT.

The only prize the team is playing for is their forum members get a £1000 freeroll that everyone can enter. (Expect Booder to be there as chief cheer leader  ;cheerleader; )

I can't see how anyone would sacrifice the prize pool and the seat for the chance to play in an online tournament with a smaller prize fund and more entrants.

So worst case is that the forum that wins splits the grand between the winning team members. That's £100 each. Hardly worth sacrificing 1st place in a £9k(ish) + GUKPT seat competition is it?

The point I'm trying to make is that the team prize seems fairly insignificant compared to the individual prizes. If anyone disagrees fair enough.

I know that I won't be dumping any of my chips to help anyone in my team stay in and if I get a chance to take one of them out and increase my stack then out they go!!

It's all about the fun weekend anyway. It's only £50 after all and it would be a better weekend if Mr Ironside attends. Hence the reason I'm making this argument. Otherwise I wouldn't be bothered  :)

ITB the problem i have isnt the fact its a team event its that people new to poker (which apat is meant to be attracting) will think its normal to do this and will do it in other NONE team events.

i hate the concept of "team poker" although i think team poker is ok if your playing for points and no team mates are ever on same table as in the 10x20 player sng would involve 6 hours of poker on days one and another 6 hours of poker on day 2 would be more than enough

I was gutted to see that the first DTD mini festival is on the same weekend.

I am more than happy to sacrifice the £750 tournament for this team event because I've got a feeling the fun factor will more than compensate but the not knowing what's happening is getting a bit tedious.

1 Forums should appoint a captain and can apply to enter a maximum of two teams by the closing date of June 22nd.  Final player selections will need to be confirmed by June 29th.

2. Structure is standard APAT.

3 . Top 50 only because we need to be able to guarantee to capture points scoring correctly, and we should be able to do this from five / six tables out. With twenty tables in play and players going out left right and centre between 8pm and 11pm on day one, this would be impossible. A while ago a team event was held where the scoring was in error, discovered after the comp, when prize money had been handed out etc etc

I have confirmed with Des that blonde has two teams it would like to enter.  We'll make the team picks before 29th so that APAT can have them by then.

To those that have asked me about the THM team, apparently there may be one after all. Sadly I am not involved as I will be away in sunny Exeter and I also heard there were no TV cameras.  8)

Just been on apat forum and there's already 17 teams regd as interested with 4 wanting 2 teams, Hmm not looking likely we are going to get to put 2 teams in really

I can't see we're going to get two team in either.  Given that people will be in the process of arranging travel and accommodation (and indeed may already have forked out) I think APAT need to get this sorted asap.  Do we have a date by which we will definitely know the number of teams we can enter?  If, as I suspect, it's only going to be one team, will the team members be chosen in order of expressions of interest? (seems the fairest way, but would be a shame if others who had expressed an interest later ended up losing money).

Yes.  We have 20 people to fit into 10 places. 

it's all a bit of a mess.  we've got more people who have agreed to play than space available now due to a late surge of interest from other forums wishing to put a team in, and poor old Kin has been given the task of choosing a team from those who have said they want to come (not a nice position to be in, as many people will already have forked out for travel/accommodation etc on the understanding they would be playing).

He's decided the fairest way to do it is for everyone who has put their name down to enter the $10 Wednesday night donkament tomorrow, and the top 10 finishers will form the team to represent blonde.

I have to say I'm disappointed by the organisation of this tournament (on APAT's part, nothing to do with blonde).  It's been listed as an event in their tournament calendar since the beginning of the season.  I looked at all the championship dates at that time, and this was the only one I could make, so I was quite looking forward to it.  I can't quite understand why it was left so late in the day to establish the format of the tournament, and the number of entries per forum etc.

That said, I hope the event is a success, and that the blonde team take it down!

right, problem solved, I've set up my own forum. it's called gatso's poker forum, it's not on the internet or anything, you have to write messages on scraps of paper and bring them round to my house and I stick them up on a big posterboard using drawing pins. you can join by filling in the forms which will be available to personal callers just as soon as I've written them out, you might have to wait until the morning though 'cos I've got to photocopy them down the newsagents. 1st 9 people to join can be on my team for Blackpool.

Due to a prior arrangement I'm not able to make the game tonight but will be travelling up for the weekend. With this drop out rate there may be no need for the game anyway  ;D

Like I said I want to play but also can not make tonight to qualify but will still be there to rail. Not sure that people are dropping out as such but did not anticipate haveing to quilify tonight to be in the team.

yep, we're not dropping out as we don't want to play, just no chance of Matt making the team as he's on holiday, and we'd already said we wouldn't go up unless we were both playing. 

I'm sure we'll find something else fun to do that weekend.... ;whistle;
