Title: Expekt.com Norwegian Championships ME: Day 3 - Interactive
Post by: JungleCat03 on May 04, 2008, 01:53:05 PM
Well folks we're in the money and the field has been whittled down from 514 to 54. Big names have come and gone, the likes of Lodden and Thewy have long since departed, meaning we are left with a sea of largely scandinavian faces, gradually becoming more familiar to myself and Jen.

However floating upon that Nordic sea of faces like distinct little British icebergs you will find a small contingent of homegrown players battling for the honour of these shores against the almost irrepressible forces of the marauding Norse invaders. Leading the charge for the UK is Ian Frazer, his meaty stack of 120k giving him every chance of scything down a few Vikings and running deep. With fewer chips but perhaps no less lofty aspirations are Daniel Platten and Billy Ngo, the latter wearing an omnipresent ear to ear smile that is most pleasing to see and thoroughly in keeping with the great spirit of this week. Chris Bruce, who went about his business methodically and effectively yesterday, is also well placed with a stack just shy of the 90k mark.

Bringing up the rear are Andrew Shepherd and Mark Docherty, who will both be forced to gamble soonish if they aren't to be buried under an avalanche of Viking arrows. Both will do us proud I'm sure. Also, Irish player and celebrated potato lover Mick McCool has driven his little Irish tractor through the snowy, scandie landscape most effectively, pootling along very nicely with a stack of almost exactly 100k.

This thoroughly enjoyable and ever exciting event is moving inexorably towards its climax and we will play through today until 9 players remain to do battle one last time tomorrow. Join us for the 3pm start to see who will survive the cull...

The Norwegians are near-fanatical about their poker - they'll watch it in their hundreds streaming live all day, even when the under-the-table cameras aren't on (as was the case through the early days).  Commentary at 100mph comes from a little mini-studio actually, today, on the rail set up on a poker table.  Here are commentators Sverre Sundbo and Torstein Iversen, bizarrely sat about 10 feet from where we're working.

"So, Sverre, what about all that 2-4 action yesterday?"
"What about it?  Standard."

Hands getting to showdown in the 'normal' fashion are a little thin on the ground at the moment - all-ins present our major opportunity for viewing actual cards in actual players' hands.  But here's one I watched anyway, as it looked like it might develop into something interesting.

Blinds 1,500/3k/ante 300...  Svein Arnesen raised to 8,500, called by an in-position Ole Johan Knudsen.
Flop:  Qs 7s Jh  Arnesen bets out 14k, and is raised quickly to 29k.  This causes some consternation, but after a bit of a dwell this won him the pot.

Pictured stacking, while his neighbour Erik Borkvik looks into my soul.

We're one Brit down as the shortstacked Andrew Shepherd made a valiant but ultimately vain attempt to acquire a stack, moving with J-8 suited.

Sadly for him he ran into the far superior K-K of his tablemate Timm Stokke, and no surprises on the flop reduced Andrew's stack to dust and he departs us.

Here he is shortly after that hand, happy to pick up £750 for his troubles.

And his Nordic nemesis, Timm Stokke...

A big hand for Daniel Platten sees a triple all-in preflop, which bumps him out of the short-stack bracket.  Short stacked Erik Kindlian moved in, called by someone in seat 3 or 4 (sorry not sure) and then Daniel goes for it too!  Another call from the coverer of both of them...

Kindlian:  Ks 3s
Matey:  Jc Jh
Platten:  Qh Qc

Flop:  5h Qs Js  Suddenly delighted, Platten, the shortest of the three, suddenly sees a good outcome probable from this situation...
Turn:  7s  Suddenly not so delighted, Platten probably prays for the board to pair...
River:  7d  And "Yes!" Hand clap and obvious release of tension, a delighted Platten sees his forturnes turn upwards.

Top:  Kindlian (I think) standing up in preparation for moving to the rail, as he was left with 1,200 after this hand...
Bottom:  Platten stacking

We are sat up right in the middle of the room today, which means that action is all around us, including the final of yesterday's PLO tournament.  Directly behind us we find none other than Ralph 'Karabiner' Shalson, who's made the final Nine and returned to battle the frankly towering chip lead of Torstein Iversen after playing until 4am last night.  As I write this, another one bites the dust and Eight remain...

Eliminations since last list...

46      Erik Kindlien
47   Morten Langbraten
48   Andrew Shepherd
49   Jan Olav Sjavik

Also out in 45th is Mick McCool, moving in with K-Q, only to run into and race unsuccessfully against a pair of 6s in the hands of his scandinavian opponent.

So Mick's out, it's back on the tractor I guess. I hope there's not too much traffic on the M25!

Good game sir.

As we can't show a picture of Mick, here is the man sat next to him, Tage Almark, doing well at this stage with 150k+...

Latest elimination is perennial hat wearer and one of the thousands of people I mistook for Neil Blatchly the other day, Thomas Olavsrud.

Here he is, behatted as usual, not Neil Blatchly, as usual, giving the table one last wistful glance as he heads out of the competition £1,000 richer.

Good game Neil! Thomas!

;bp;

A threeway all in sees Robin Reed (remember him - the fast-track learning poker-commune living guy?) more than double through to a comfy 250k or so.  Brede Sandkjernan found himself the shortest stack in this coup, and he held Ac Th, which was in bad shape against what I think was a bigger Ace in the hand of Timm Stokke, and the Tc Td held by Robin Reed.

The board came: 4-9-5-4-J with no flushy surprises and so Reed stacks his new chips, Sandkjernan heads for the rail, while a seriously dented Stokke watches his stack being basically shipped across the table with something approaching distaste:

One of the remaining UK contingent remaining in, Billy Ngo, jsut found himself allin.

He was holding 5-5 allin preflop, having decided it was time to gamble but found himself in that unfortunate position of his opponent holding a larger pair leaving him dominated and very likely to be out in moments.

A timely 5 spiked on the turn though, leaving Billy fist-pumping and jubilant as the river blanked to double him through.

Normally in these situations, you sort of want the best hand to hold up, but when you see the joy pouring out of Billy and the way his face lit up as the five hit, you can't help but root for the guy.

Here's Billy enjoying his moment with a huge grin!

Thomas Middelthon just dodged quite a few bullets to double through Stein Hansen - all in on a Ac 3c 9s flop with Ad Kh, against Hansen's 8c 9c...
The turn and river brought the clubless Nineless Eightless Qh and Jd, so he calmly rebuilt his huge stack which must have been taking some hits prior to this pot.  Chris Bruce, who's just been moved to Middelthon's immediate right, sort of nudged his more modest stack out of the way, saying, "You might need a bit more space, mate."

And in one of those bizarre quirks of fate that life can throw up from time to time, the very next hand, Billy's table partner, Stig Thomassen  found himself allin with 5-5, and again he was up against the knaves of Bjornar Koss. And AGAIN the fives made a set to upset the apple cart...

Spooky coincidence?

Statistical anomaly?

Badly shuffled deck?

You decide!!! ( well you don't have to if you don't want)

Docherty Down!

Having held on tenaciously while players with more chips have fallen to the left and right, our shortstacked UK player Mark Docherty has finally bitten the dust.  He shoved pre with Kh Th, and was called by Ac Qd.  Not one but two Queens later, and he exits in the £1k prize bracket...

And in contrast one of the Brits whose star is rising is Daniel Platten, his flush draw with Ks Js hitting to send (i beleive) Kim-ove Hagerup crashing to the rail.

Here is Daniel, not letting one rip in celebration as it may appear but adjusting his seat after that near double up...

It is 2.5k / 5k / 500 at the moment, 15 minutes into level 17.

35 players remain and the average stack is 146,857.

BAD NEWS FOR BRITS

Chris Bruce came over earlier and was concerned he may need to move quickly with his 80k stack. Well move it he did with Td Jd, only to find As Kc in the hands of Øystein Halland.

A flop of Ad 6c 4h Ac 7d was resounding, meaning Chris' tournament life had ebbed away like the pieces of skull from the kid's tv programme Knightmare. (great series)

Bjørn Andre Hovden knocks out Stig Thomassen, showing an uncharacteristic expressiveness in standing up and shouting, "HUNH!" or something, just the once, before regaining composure and stacking his new chips.  It doesn't happen very often, but sometimes the excitement/disappoinment/gloaty winning feeling just can't be kept inside, it seems, and you get the occasional brief, but very loud shouting from one of the remaining four tables, which is always a sign of a big movement in chips of some sort.

        BORING HATWATCH

With the demise of the Snakeskin Cowboy, we lost pretty much the last Colour from this tournament - lucky the play here is so unrelenting and usually interesting that there's enough to keep us keen... But I just noticed that there is one hat-wearer per table at the moment, and decided to introduce these players to blonde via the medium of mocking their tediously subdued headgear.  I would say these are in order, from least to most boring, but there really are no winners here.

Tim Stokke has just eliminated 2 players on the feature table. A 3 way allin preflop,  his A-K was looking good versus the A-Q and (not sure of the other hand but may have been another A-Q) and a K on the flop secured the pot, which gave him a juicy increase to his stack and meant he consigned 2 players to the rail...

Stokke proffers his hand to one of his victims as he sends him crashing out...

His other victim leaves the table as the cull of the white shirted scandies continues...

In contrast to many of the companies in the FTSE index, this Stokke's rising...

This player, Erik Borkvik, is sharing the felt with the quiet (for once!) but still in, Ian Frazer.

I think he bears a passing resemblance to a younger, slightly hairier version of Dave Colclough, whilst Jen maintains he is more of a Gareth from the office look-a-like.

Here he is in full bulgey eye mode. Any opinions?

The two-out dramas continue, this time in the shape of Oyvind Ephraimsen's Jd Jh, all in preflop against the Qd Qh of Magnus Skumsnes...  I guess that kind of gives the story away, but just to round it out, the board brought a Js first off, followed by some irrelevant cards which made a full house, knocking Magnus down to the felt.

Oyvind Ephraimsen, with the floor abuzz counting out and doubling his stack:

Billy Ngo is Billy Ngone!

Shortstacked with less than 60k, he made his move with a fine K-Q, only to run into Martin Gudvangen's pocket ladies.

He managed to spike a two outer earlier but despite having 50% more outs this time, he couldn't hit the K he desired, despite picking up an open ended straight draw on the turn so the British contingent is depleted once more as the happy and likeable character departs the playing arena.

Here is Billy, stilll smiling but a little resigned to his fate as he realised he is in trouble...

SO we're down to just two UK players in a field of aggressive Scandinavians.  They're both keeping their heads above water, however:

Daniel Platten, Featured and commentated on - 150,000

Ian Frazer, starting to wander around between hands, telling Dave Smith that he's "The last English player standing, cause Dan's sitting down."  Apparently he just lost about a 150k pot to his neighbour in a small blind vs. big blind situation - he'd flopped two pair, "I had him all the way, and he caught his flush on the river."  Still on around 140k.

AJ vs. AK sees off Simen Derås Jacobsen on the last hand before the current ***************1hr DINNER BREAK***************

Anyone feel like taking a guess at some final tablists?  I will go for Thomas Middelthon, Robin Reed and Ian Frazer...

Martin continues to run Gud(vangen)

After dismissing Billy Ngo from the comp, the table was broken and he announced himself in style to the new table.

Calling a shortstack's move allin with Aspades Js, he found himself ahead of Simen Derås Jacobsen's Ks 9s..

A flop of 9h Tc Qc gave assistance to both players, moving Simen slightly ahead with bottom pair but vulnerable to Martin's OESD...

Simen, with his tournament life on the line, was gripped by developments...

Needing to dodge an A K or 8, Simen couldn't even survive the turn though as a K arrived to improve his hand to two pair but give Martin a virtual lock with the nut straight.

When the river blanked, so did Simen's chances of winning the tournament. Good game.

Here is the man of the moment, Martin Gudvangen, shortly after claiming yet another scalp.

Also going great guns is Gareth from the office and Dave Colclough's love child, Erik Borkvik.

In a preflop raised pot he and table partner, Bjørn Andre Hovden, fired their chips into the middle for what was a 350k pot.

MONSTER POT ALERT!!

The board of 4s 8s Qs was a great one for Bjorn holding Qd Qh for the nut set, but even greater for Erik in a huge cooler scenario, as he held Ts Js. Bjorn needed to pair the board to knock down Erik's flush and both players watched the flop anxiously...

As the turn and river came 9h 6d however, there was no escape for Bjorn, who lost the massive pot, which has seen Erik catapulted to the higher echelons of the leaderboard...

Here is the unfortunate Bjorn...

Back on track playing after the buffet (which we somehow managed to leave raiding so late it was gone by the time we got in there :(  ) we were expecting a slightly slower rate of runner reduction, and there's definitely a good exciting atmosphere around the final three tables, which is greatly aided by the £300 event kicking off and filling the room with chip-riffling, beer-drinking noises.  Expect updates aplenty on Julian, Maria et al. over on the other update thread gearing up about now.

Over on one table, Martin Gudvangen raises preflop to 21k in early position, getting re-raised calmly to 60k by Frank Porturas.  Over to Oyvind Efraimsen on the button who places a chip carefully on his cards.  I am just about to think, "Pass quicker," to myself when he suddenly moves all in!  Big blind Almark Tage wishes out loud, "Aces!" but clearly doesn't have those as he passes as does Gudvangen, briskly.

Back to Porturas, who now looks distinctly unhappy, sort of like a man who's just put almost half their stack in to resteal but found someone else with a hand behind... It's 137,700 exactly in total, so just under 80k to call.  A couple of railers seem to expect him to call for his tournament life speedily, but he doesn't.  He thinks and thinks and eventually passes, leaving himself short and presumably ruing his timing.

Genuinely one of, if not THE nicest tournament environments I've ever experienced. Loud and boisterous at times, the Norwegians have been polite and courteous always and you very rarely see any of them kicking off after a bad beat (see below) / angle shooting / any of the lame poker antics you often see elsewhere.

I can't praise them highly enough and hope this event becomes a regular fixture.

Roger Johannesen is OUT in 23rd place (we're now in the £1,500) prize bracket...

Oyvind Efraimsen raised on the button (it's really been his level or so, actually) and found short stacked Johannesen moving in on the big blind for 34,900 more.  He didn't think for very long before giving him a spin with his Ahrt 5d - which was ahead of Johannesen's Ad 3h, but with the potential split a bit of a relief for the all-in player...

More of a relief must have been the flop:  3d Jc 7h
Turn:  9d
River:  5h   (Oooh, say the table, but in a resigned, "It was all in pre after all," sensible way).

Pictured - Efraimsen and neighbour Almark Tage laughing at the cruel vagaries of lady luck.  Probably.

SICK HAND IMMINENT!

When Peter Brusdal shvoed allin over the top of a Tim Stokke raise and was called, he was pleased to find himself well in front with Jd Jh versus the Ahrt Th of Tim.

A flop of Ks Jc 3d all but sealed the deal, his set of jacks leaving Tim with only four outs to hit a straight to take it down.

The turn blanked in the form of the 7c BUT given the title of the post, you will probably have already guessed the river was a Qd!!

Very sick, but not moaning from Peter, just a glum look at the table and silent contemplation over his misfortune. Tim had him covered so that was his tournament over...

Here is Peter after this beat, speechless.

A very large pot developed with four interested parties preflop, prepared to expend at least the original raiser's 22k... but a couple of players had other ideas about cheap flops, Arne Falkenhaug moving in on the small blind for 122k or so.  Over to Porturas who may have been the original raiser, who made the call, while the other two guys backed off.
Falkenhaug:  Kc Kh
Porturas: 9h 9s

The board came out Tc 7c 4s Ahrt Ac (surely one of the two folders' eyebrows twitched ever so slightly)... and Arne said "YO!" and then went back to being silent, having won a pot of around 300k.

Kristoffer Ustad was just elminated, making a move with A-8, he ran into the A-Q of Geir Lian ( i think!)

A 4-9-K-T-Q board sufficed for Geir and left Kristoffer banished to the rail but not before he bumped into DTD's version of cyclops...

Supersick!

That is the wonderfully hissy commentary given to this hand:  Marcus Pettersson moved in for his last 36,900, flat called by button Tage Almark.  The crowds drifted over, however, when big blind Martin Gudvangen re-raised all in - for 172,200.  This turned out to be more than Almark was willing to call, and it was 'on their backs' time:

Pettersson:  Ahrt 8h
Gudvangen:  Qs Qd

Flop:  8d 6c 4h  No comment from rail
Turn:  Jd  No comment from rail
River:  8c  One guy mutters "Supersick" and then they drift off.

Nothing really to report, as far as hands go - the shorter stacks just keep making stands now and then, and the bigger stacks picking up the now hefty 5k/10k/1k blinds and antes.  Robin Reed has been particularly active, just now moving all in preflop two hands in a row (this takes quite a while when it's hand for hand, as it is).  The first time it was uncontested (apart from a brief dwell from Frazer with his 'pair') but the second time he nearly got a call from Stein Hansen... but no.

The only flop I've seen in the last half hour was, actually, 3h 5d 7s, at which point Efraimsen moved in after his opponent bet out 50k to take the pot.

Stein Hansen asks neighbour Ian Frazer if he and one other guy are the only UK players left, gesturing towards these two (Stig Rune Kveen and Dan Platten).  Ian Frazer thought he was pointing at Kveen, and says, "He's not English - are you crazy?  Look at his hair."  :)    "I'm English," helped out Platten.

A peaceful, tranquil period just elapsed in which little of note happened.

The serene waters of the tournament were, however, broken in dramatic fashion as there was not jsut one but TWO allins!

First off we had Taga Almark and Martin Gudvangen tangling preflop, the former holding Kd Kc, the latter Ad Ks...

Taga watched the board like a hawk to see if Martin would spike the ace he needed but a board of 8-8-3-3-2 transpired, no ace and thus no more Martin.

Tage is happy with his Kings holding - OBV!

Martin, on the left, tries to sneak in and sit with another guy's stack, but I noticed...NO NO NO! Give it up and go and get your £2k Martin.

Simultaneous to this hand, 2 players on the adjacent table move their chips in on a 4s 7s 8s flop.

The players in question were Stig Rune Kveen and Robin Reed, the former showing Ad Ahrt and the latter Kd 4d.

Stig was overjoyed to find his opponent was drawing so thin against his two reed aces on an all black board. a 3d and 7c turn and river didn't provide any shocks and Reed is our next elimination, leaving 17 players left to battle on...

Stein was left short after this hand and almost as if the two brits were working as a tag team he was polished off by Ian Frazer a few hands later, whose juicy Kings held to knock out Stein, who had moved in desperate fashion with 4d 5d.

Both Daniel and Ian are doing Britain proud as the field is whittled down yet further and we approach the dramatic finale to this contest.

16 players remain...

For the chip lead, this one... On a flop of Tc 8h 4s Marcus Pettersson bet out, Geir Lian raised, and Pettersson moved in.  A little think, and a call - with Jh Th...trailing behind Pettersson (whom I just found out is a sneaky Swede) with Td 8c for top two.
Turn:  Qh  making the whole thing drawtastic...
River:  4c - a blank and a giant pot for Pettersson, a huge hit for Lian - pictured looking stern.  Fair enough.

Unsurprisingly, Geir Lian moves in pretty sharpish for his last 34k, and finds Ian Frazer re-raising.  The blinds obligingly depart, and Frazer shows Ac Qc, against Lian's Td Jd.  A K-Q-6 flop added a bit of excitement, but the turn and river bricked sending Geir Lian to the rail in 15th place, winning  £2,165.

Here's Frazer ready to Take On All of Norway:

Bjørn Andre Hovden just shoved his smallish stack into the middle but ran into the big slick of Arne Kristian Falkenhaug.

In bad shape with K2, he was looking to spike a deuce and the first card out obliged a 2 hitting the felt to a mighty nordic roar from Bjorn. Arne is a tough nut though, despite his comical "train driver" hat and with just 3 outs to hit now, he nonetheless managed to river an ace, sending Bjorn spiralling out of the comp with another viking roar.

Arne "I'll be a rack"

Unsurprisingly, Geir Lian moves in pretty sharpish for his last 34k, and finds Ian Frazer re-raising.  The blinds obligingly depart, and Frazer shows Ac Qc, against Lian's Td Jd.  A K-Q-6 flop added a bit of excitement, but the turn and river bricked sending Geir Lian to the rail in 15th place, winning  £2,165.

Here's Frazer ready to Take On All of Norway:

And once again, a small lull in proceedings proves to simply be the calm before the storm as an action pot develops.

Stig Rune Kveen, holding Kc Jc called Thomas Middleton's push with 3d 3s. Let's race them cards!

The flop came Ad 6c 8c to give Stig the advantage holding the nut flush draw and 2 overs...

an 8d on the turn meant an A or 6 was now also good and finally a Jh arrived on the river to polish off Thomas, meaning...

Thomas Middlethon is OUT, eliminated in 14th spot, winning £2,165

Good game sir, 13 combatants remain...(2 brits still!)

Ian Frazer Doubles Up!

Three way to a Jd 4c 6c flop after a raise pre to 42k by Kjetil Skau, called by Marcus and then by Ian Frazer.  I think Frazer bet out, was raised by Skau, and then moved in.  Call!

Frazer shows:  4s 4h
Skau shows:  Kc Kh

Turn and river:  6h Qd, at which point Frazer can't help it, he yells "Come ON!" and then rushes over to thank Marcus:  "Thank you for calling preflop!  You priced me in!"
Up to half a mil and looking like he's going to remain a thorn in the Norwegians' collective side.

(http://www.artstamps.dk/Images_Copenhagen/4-Tivoli-Brandes.jpg) ALERT!

Sick pot just played out!

Stokke is short and has been shoving farily often. One more shove, this time was flat called by Stig Rune Kveen, who found Daniel Platten moving in behind him. He called pretty much instantly as you do with Aces!

Daniel: Jd Js

Tim: Th Jh

A T came on the flop but an A on the turn was decisive and left Tim and Daniel drawing dead, meaning...

Tim Stokke is OUT, eliminated in 13th spot, winning £3,031 and...

Daniel Platten is OUT, eliminated in 12th spot, winning £3,031

Tim Stokke hopes for a miracle, in vain...

Platten gets flattened "what was I supposed to do!!!"

Stig calmly sips his drink as his two vanquished opponents shakes hands behind his back...

The demise of Jim Jakobsen who just fell in 11th place, winning £3,031

First off, it passed to him on the small blind and he popped in a raise to 100k.  Clearly disappointed when big blind Erik Borkvik moved in for 119k, he had to call with his 5h 6d, but found Borkvik holding Ahrt 9h.  This eventually turned into the nut flush on the river, and knocked him down to around 200k.

Then he got it in almost immediately preflop against Borkvik again - this time with 9c 9d against 6s 6d.  Usually a good spot, but not with a 6-3-3 flop, and so we're on the FINAL TABLE BUBBLE........

For any of you who are wondering why they were holding auditions for the re-make of the exorcist in the background....no, no no no! The girl who looks like she may maim someone at any moment is in fact Jen who was snapped looking very hungry. Jen's sort of like a mogwai from gremlins, except she differs in that you have to feed her after midnight or she mutates into some sort of "timorous beasty" - ARGHHHHHH!!!!

And falling in 10th place, winning £3,031 is Arne Kristian Falkenhaug

Well, all ten couldn't make the final - and the one to be eliminated was Arne, who pushed all in for 201,500 over the top of Sondre Barlien's preflop raise to 90k.  He shook his head, ummed and ahed and generally looked uncomfortable, before making his mind up and firmly setting down the call.
Barlien:  Kc Tc
Falkenhaug:  Ac Jc

Flop:  Js Ks 7s
Turn: Kd
River: 2d

And that was all she wrote.  This was actually the last hand before a scheduled break in the Main Event, so it's just going to be overnight instead.  The Final Table starts at 5pm tomorrow.

Well! With that elimination, we have reached the end of today's events for us and the players.

The final 9 have been determined and with 7 Norwegians, 1 Swede and 1 Englishman, we are guarenteed to see an exciting final.

We'll get exact chip counts shortly which we will of course post up in due course. Good luck to everyone tomorrow, especially Ian Frazer, the last remaining British hope. We hope you will join us for the commencement of the final tomorrow, which incidentally will start at the later time of 5pm

We'll see you then but for now from myself and Gizmo, sorry Jen...

You sound like a bitter old time pokerplayer whos idea of playing poker is waiting for aces. Time to retire old boy.
