you'll need a back up team following you in a boat for safety reasons, plus a lot of training beforehand and all the logisitics worked out

Maybe sponsorship by an organisation is the route to go to cover these costs

 i have sorted 2 back up boats to follow me and i am proposing that i will do this in less than 4 days (96 hours)
 i will have a life jacket on and a wetsuit no person will aid me in the water.
i will be offering odds of 2-1 and min stake of $200 max stake of $1,000 per person, upto $200,000
30% will go to charity 20% for exes and 50% from all bets i have to myself,
all sponsored monies will be shared out.

How big are these flippers?!! I'd say an average of 3 or 4 miles an hour tops, for about 5 hours max. The key thing is this,


though surely it just wouldnt even be considered to do it one go! I'd stake my life on the impossibility of doing it in pretty much one go.

Few more details on the timescale for when it'll happen and the timetable for doing it.

I was thinking that myself but thats why I think there must be an angle- I could probably swim 400 miles in 96 hours total and I'm crap-just swim a mile a day and be done in just over a year- no need to work with a safe $100,000 in the bank for a wee bit of work a day

Swiming is harder than walking. I couldnt walk 400 miles in four days. the muscle pain would be too much and there isn't a really a cardio element with it.

A 100m sprinter reaches about 23mph at his top speed.

I'm thinking the worlds fastest swimmer would still take 11 minutes a mile - meaning an average of about 5.5 miles an hour - and that is using a sprint swimmer not a long distance one.

This is absolutely impossible.

Even elite swimmers when talking about much training they have done, often refer distances around the 100 miles/week mark. I suggest you give yourself more in the region of 3-4 weeks and be in amazing shape to even give yourself a chance of finishing.

what  i have said is true aprox 400 miles in 4 days e.g  1st tue 2nd wed 3rd thur 4th fri.,. of july 2008 weather permitting these days,,,the longest leg ive  done in practice was 36 miles against the wind in 12 hoursan average of 3 miles per hour.,.,my big concern is the weather,,it could really go aginst me if the wind changes against me.,.,but if wind behind it wont make a massive diffrence,,,

Probably the greatest ultra distance swimmer ever known [1] manages around 1.5mph over 11 hours in open warm water. It look him 10 days to swim 90 miles across the Maldives.

I'd suggest that doing 4mph for 96 hours straight - even with fins on - is, err, a tad unrealistic.

41 miles in 11 hours on a round Jersey swim which is tidally assisted. Admittedly no fins so it makes sofa's attempt a little bit more feasible.

To maintain this for 96hours though?? Surely it can't be done. He'll need at least 5 hours sleep per day so that puts him down to 76 hours.

well just came back from my atempt at 8 miles in under an hour.,.,.,.i didnt do it,.,it took me 1 hour 35 min to go 6.5 miles.,.,and the wind changed direction and the waves were just to high aprox 3 meters high this is the first time in the last 8 weeks this has happened, i was fighting a losing battle so decided to come back to the villa and rest.,,..,the more i think about it the more it looks impossible.,.but what the hell im gonna do it,,,,

i forgot to mention i was talking to one of the guys who does the glass bottom boat trips today and he said he will GIVE me his boat if i do it in less than 3 days.,.,.,silly barsteward.,.,what do they want? blood ?

I'm in for the $300 metioned earlier. Should i win anything from it (which surely there is more chance of that than me shitting brown shit in the morning) then I'll knock half of it into the charity I'm rasing money for on my 10km run next week.

Are you aware that those gloves will actually make it harder for you?

The fins are good but the gloves will just cause resistance. They are actually a training aid used by swimmers to make them faster when they take them off.

How are you planning to swim this? I assume because of the life jacket that you are planning to be on your back kicking your legs like some kind of crazy person??

If you're doing any kind kind of face down stroke then you really need to lose the life jacket. It's just another drag factor against you and you've got your support team if you sink  :)

If anyone is planning on watching this i would make sure you get there for the start as i can't see this going past the 26 hour mark.

My Dad's hobby is genealogy. He's traced our family back 11 generations (you need to be nobilty to get back any further - Joe Public didn't have their births, deaths or marriages recorded before then) and his tree includes about 1800 names. this thread did start out for real in my honest heart i really did think about it,but then it just ecalated and i got in to deep to get out,4 days to swim 400 miles.,.,be serious..,the top marathon runners in the world could not jog 4 x 25 mile marathons a day for 4 consecutive days.,.,.,get real prop betters,,,,,i was going to then swim in my friends 120 foot long boat with 28 foot pool filled with cyprus sea water for 4 days unaided, while he cruised around the island for 4 days,
