Hello and welcome back to the sunny shore upon which the Casino in which we avoid the beautiful daylight is about to pay host to the second start day of the first EPT of the fifth season of the Pokerstars sponsored tour. 

If yesterday was edging gently towards chaotic, today threatens to jump over the edge - this place isn't a sprawling megacasino and the throngs of players eagerly waiting to take their seats are swarming around, threatening to outnumber the previous day's entrants and possibly overspill into the road, and there is no wifi any more.  60 media and 300+ players - everyone's pretty enthusiastic, which is lucky, in a way.  Expect a whole host of big names, multiple excitable Spanish gentlemen, intermittent posting and a generally Large Scale day of poker...

And there they are - the Survivors - thanks Pokerstarsblog for collating and posting this information - yesterday there was a lot of "Is X playing today?"  "I don't know."  "Who's that dude shouting with lots of chips?"  "Your guess is as good as mine."  Kept us on our toes, as people were registering a level after play started...  But now we know.  Albert Sapiano, Michael Greco, Steve Jelinek among the UK players still in with a shot tomorrow.

I don't find Pascal Perrault's nor David Benyamine's chipcount which means that they have been eliminated prematurely... :(

Yep there was an impressive flurry of eliminations in the last two levels last night, and they were among the late casualties.  So, I hear, was Mickey Wernick, who apparently has a more-dramatic-than-usual bad beat type story which ends in his exiting the tournament on the last card dealt last night...

On the very first step into the heaving poker room, I came across this table:  Scotty Nguyen, Surinder, Freddy Deeb and a couple of empty stacks one of which immediately took on Scotty, who tried to raise the non-present big blind but ended up calling the 200 which Surinder had already bet.  "I didn't see you there," he admitted, "I was playing this guy..."
Flop:  4h 2h 6s  Scotty bets out something around the 300 mark, and is quickly raised to 850.  "Sick!" he comments, while calling.
Turn: 2d  Both players check
River: 2c Scotty checked, Surinder threw in 1,125 and Scotty passed, saying, "Flush draw," and gets shown Surinder's 9s 9d.

ok so as you can expect, my picks for today are Isabelle Mercier and Elky (PLUS Anthony Lelouche, Daniel Negreanu and Luca Pagano)

This Matey was faced with a decision for nearly all his chips in the first 15 minutes of play today.  He had made it to the river out of position against one other opponent, who raised him on a K-Q-x-x-x (no suits) board from 1,200 to 6,000.  This was my first witnessed Dwell of the Day, but it turned out that he wasn't prepared to lay down his Ad Ac.  Good thing for him, as as soon as he threw the call in the middle, his opponent tapped the table sheepishly, before revealing his pure bluff 7h 4h.  Early stack for this guy.

Here they are!  Elky, whose recent appearances have been becoming more flamboyant (someone in the press room yesterday if he was going to be The Riddler at this one after his previous Joker - it was only later I realised this was cheeky; isn't the riddler the one with the bag over his head?).  Confident, outgoing, definitely one of the French to watch this tournament.  And there are quite a few of them - every table seems to have a Pokerstars Pro or a Winamax French guy/gal on it.

You may have noticed an odd silence from the JungleCat at the moment - this is because overnight our wireless disappeared and lots of cables took over the room we're in like a nest of snakes.  Sadly, these snakes only choose to allow internet access intermittently, and are actually being rounded up and disposed of in about an hour, when normal service should resume.  The sound of multilingual whinging fills the air as everyone (apart from me, with a dialup card so old it's growing white hair and is partly deaf) is bounced offline.

We're all struggling with the connection in the press room so I have commandeered Jen's computer and connection as I just HAVE to tell you about some hands.

First off, let's fly back in time to yesterday where Micky Wernick fought through the day in game fashion despite never having seen any cards.

The last hand of the day proved a crucial one for him as he shoved all-in over the top of a raise with pocket Jacks, only to get a call from a player with Ace bit and looked set to double up to 16k or so.

In classic fashion the board went blank blank blank blank ...ACE and poor Micky was out.

He said "in 45 years that's the most painful bad beat I've had" and for a man who's played as much poker as the accomplished veteran of the circuit that's a pretty amazing statement. We're sorry Micky but you'll be back on the horse soon I'm sure!

Daniel Negreanu is yet another star name to be in attendance today and he had a bad start to the day going down to 4.5k, but not long ago his fortunes turned round, doubling through with pocket Kings. As soon as the wireless is restored in the press room, I'll have some pictures of the chirpy canadian to share with you, the blonde faithful.

Tony Cascarino, recent Bolton GUKPT winner is OUT!

He flopped top two, betting out, only to receive a call from a player who had bottom pair, which improved to a better two pair than Tony on the King turn, and the ex-footballer couldn't get away from the hand resulting in his early demise.

Julian has had a slow start, down to 7k early on, but he has ground back to 9k or so. He told me is a big fan of his table...there are two very "cally" spaniards in position on him, and I think he feels there are chips to be made at this table.

French ex-gaming champion and EPT Bahamas champion Elky is OUT!

He exited in unfortunate fashion, shipping his stack in on the turn with a queen flush, only to pick up a call from a player with Kings and a King high flush draw.

The extra suited card arrived on the river to render his flush 2nd best and send the Frenchman to the rail.

Yesterday's poker, though exciting was perhaps a touch more subdued than we might have expected. It was as if the European Poker Tour fuse had been lit but was a bit damp and was sparking intermittently.

Today though, the atmostphere seems that much more intense. There is a sizzle and crackle in the air that was absent on day one and it feels much more like the magnificent tournament the inaugural event of this year's EPT season deserves.

Perhaps this is partly as a result of the higher density of big names scattered like tough little diamonds throughout the field.

One table in particular has a big ring of star quality to it with Scotty (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=874) Nguyen (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=874) and his tousled shoulder length locks facing off against the diminuitive in stature, but giant in table presence Freddy (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=834) Deeb (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=834). The two players are both previous winners of the WSOP $50k HORSE tournament, Scotty the current incumbent, and this should prove a fascinating battle as the day progresses.

Also on their table is Surinder (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=422) Sunar (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=422), though he may be wishing he had received a kinder table draw!

Stu Rutter told me about an interesting hand that took place at his table. With 10,000 chips, it's pretty hard to go broke in level one you'd have thought and sometimes you do see players stacking off somewhat light given the depths in stacks.

In this particular hand though, it's pretty tough to get away!

Here's how it played out.

Matey A raises to 250 pre with what later turns out to be Aces and gets a call from Matey B with what turns out to be threes.

The flop comes A 7 3. Pretty sick. Gonna get worse though.

Aces bets, 3s call. Standard.

Aces checks his quads, B now bets 600 with his house, A calls.

That's a cooler folks! Quads over quads in one of the biggest comps in the world...nice. Possibly the only man who could have got away from this hand is Womble. I think he could have found a fold on the flop, turn and river...with either hand.

Arnaud Mattern is another French EPT champion, taking down EPT Prague in the 2007/2008 season. He has had a reasonable start to the day, jsut above his starting stack at the moment and looks focused today though the genial Frenchman is always only a moment away from a cheeky toothy grin.

Surinder was no doubt very happy for the early break of his table containing Scotty Nguyen and Freddy Deeb. He managed to negotiate the early stages without getting into any trouble though, still on roughly 10,000 chips...

Tim Vance is playing today. The american winner of EPT Copenhagen had a rough time of it at the world series, failing in his quest to pick up a bracelet, but he remains positive for the future.

He said his plan for the day is to get through with 10,000 chips.

"Does that mean if you have 50,000 on the last hand, you'll try and donk off 40,000?"

He looked at me quizically, before saying "No, that would be a bonus!"

Tim made a lot of headlines during EPT Copenhagen, partly for talking into his hat which raised quite a few eyebrows...

It transpired he kept a picture of his daughter in his hat which he drew on for inspiration during tough times and he is back with hat and picture of daughter in tow today.

I asked him to pull an intelligent face for the camera and this is what he came out with. Er...

You'd never catch the english doing anything like that as we've proved by sticking to our own homegrown stars over the years such as Lennox Lewis, Greg Rusedski and Kevin Petersen.

Left out of the chip count lists, but just so he can have his own story, is a nicely stacked Stuart Rutter - on 30k.  Arrived at his table with the action frozen just like this:

Stuart had a big chunk of 1k chips over the line on the river with a board standing 9h Ts 3d 7s 3h.  It at first looked like a monstrous overbet as the pot was around 3,000, but it transpired that his one opponent had around 3,000 behind himself, and Stuart was putting him to the test for the rest of his stack.  A lot of thinking, and some sinister near-grinning from Stu later, and suddenly Matey snapped and shoved his remaining chips in - only to find Stu flipping his Jh 8d for onlythenuts.

You mock me, cat, and I will not tolerate it! Bring me Eidsvig! And then perhaps I shall admit that it was stupidity that made me post on the other thread rather than the desire to wield my considerable mod power!

The absence of Trond from the updates is merely a reflection of the apparent absence of Trond from the tables. Both myself and Jen have done several full circuits of the tables and his spiky haired and pointy chinned visage is nowhere to be found.

I hope he hasn't bust early but it appears this is quite a possibility.

There is one table with chips on it from a player who has yet to arrive so it is possible that Trond is still tucked up safely in bed.

His table neighbour Tim Vance though, won't be adding to his EPT trophy cabinet today though as he has busted out in a set versus set coup. Unfortunate for the former EPT winner but he told me at the start of the day he just didn't want to do anything stupid and he can't blame himself for going out with a set really.

Sorel Mizzi is trundling along at an even pace, but is making progress, the betfair sponsored Canadian pro up to 16k right now...

Silent but deadly, like those venomous treesnakes or carbon monoxide, these are examples of players you won't find making a big fuss about everything, Table Captaining by talking all the hours the poker gods give, or celebrating by hi-fiving their mates on the rail and shouting like at the beginning of A Space Odyssey.  Although the press are attracted to bad behaviour, table lecturing, displays of emotion and general shenanigans like JC is to the bar at the end of a day's work, we respect those who get it quietly - and any of these players could get it.  Watch out for:

Sebastian Ruthenberg - Won a WSOP bracelet this year in Hi-lo Seven Card Stud to go at the top of a string of NLHE events he's cashed in to date.  Focused, he is representative of a new generation of German players giving the Scandinavians a run for their money.

Adam Junglen - Not terribly well known amongst the Europeans, and probably to just a select few in the UK who have one eye permanently connected to the internet, there were US requests to follow this youngster last season and impressed the crowd with his calmly measured yet fearless game.  One to watch.

Jan Heitmann - Nominated for EPT Player of the Year, Jan has almost-but-not-quite reached the dizzy heights of Championship titles several times, and is (apparently) some kind of celebrity in Germany, often trailed by camera crews along with pal George Danzer.  Behind glasses reminiscent of the bad cop in Terminator Two you get the impression he's humourlessly amassing data...but he's actually a really nice guy.  Having seen him do card magic, wouldn't like him dealing for me though.

Jonas Molander - Amiable Swedish player whose online successes probably mirrored live soon - first noted in Helsinki winning gnome-shaped trophy at the Helsinki Freezeout in 2005, he's travelled the world and is already a comparable EPT veteran.  Three times on the last two tables - could this year see him progress further?

This guy is Tomeu Gomila aka Amatos on PS. He's one of the best spanish tournament players. Used to play 100R and 50R on PS, making some FT and winning one or two.

With his half of the room on a break, Stuart Rutter pops into the press room to say that that Quads vs. Quads hand came out out in favour of Smurfit, and that was pretty much the only hand he played on their first table.  Rutter's been moved three times already, and says that he's been progressively less happy with his table... as it is he has 23,000 after "Not playing brilliantly, but OK - I did get the rest off the guy you saw me stack a little earlier, after he made a surprise risky move with King high..."

He's been getting the odd playable hand, though, like the 8h 8s which hit a flop of 8d 5d 4c pretty hard.  He said he wasn't too worried about getting stacked by draws vs. the player he was up against, "Just cards which stop my action vs. things like Jacks.  So I decide to get the chips in now."  He raises a bet of 1,200 to 3,000, but, contrary to expectations, there was no further action.  He won the pot.  That's not that fascinating is it?  But what happened next ended in Stu calling for a ruling - a French player on his table noticed, rightly, that one of Stu's cards was a little bent at the corner.  Yep, fair enough - new deck etc. etc.  But this player took that opportunity to flip both of Stu's cards over, giving the rest of the table an interesting peek into the hand, and how he was playing it.  "That wasn't entirely innocent," mused Stu, but met with absolutely no interest from the floor.

Look who's here!  It's Steve Frezer, discarding the Suit of Authority for the Bright Yellow T-Shirt of Fun.  Good to see him on that side of a table again...although he needs to work on the speed of posing.

I joined Arnaud Mattern's table recently in the blind hope I would catch an interesting hand. And my little pilgrimage to the Frenchman's table was not in vain as a big hand played out.

My hopes were not raised by the first hand I saw him play, raising it up to 550 from middle position before it was re-raised to 2,000  by the button.

Folded back to Arnaud, he didn't take long to lay his hand down, his opponent showing him pocket Jacks and Mattern tapping the table respectfully.

The blinds rose to 150 300 and Arnaud again raised it up, this time from early position and this time to 850. There was a call from the hijack before the button, in the form of Spaniard Raul Mestre, put 5k's worth of chips into the pot and announced " SQUEEEEEEEEEEEZE." (*)

(*) Actually he didn't do this.

Mattern now contemplated his decision, his head bowed thus like a buddhist monk deep in meditation.

And once he made his decision, he picked up all his chips (circa 6.5-7k more) and dropped them over the line, a cheeky grin of relief on his face as it was now out of his hands (like so)

The middle position flatter now laid his hand down whilst the committed squeezer Raul was obliged to call the additional 2k or so, and probably had an idea he was in trouble as he flipped up Ahrt Jh.

Mattern showed no outward signs of joy, but inside must have been very happy to see this as he showed down Ac Ks, dominating the Spaniard's hand.

A flop of 3h 7s 2s 6h appeared, offering a slim possibility of an outdraw but a heartless and jackless 8d on the river meant Arnaud had doubled through to 16,000 whilst an irritated Raul began scribbling frantically in his tableside notepad.

Short stacks are finally starting to take the plunge preflop, leading to a flurry of 'on their backs' situations which draw a sprinkling of press and other players around the table... one player who seems to have honestly had under 3,000 since level one, and one hour ago had just 1,200 is Freddy Deeb.  I hovered vulturelike around his table for a while, but when he eventually shoved pre for his current 3,100 over the top of one preflop limper, there was no interest.  Not even any considering of it.  He seems surprisingly cheerful about the whole thing.

Meanwhile Julian Thew has drifted down to around 6k - still looking for opportunities (as I recall about now is when he gets his first double up, then another just before the end of the penultimate level, if previous runs can be used to predict the future).  He raised on the cutoff just a moment ago but was immediately re-raised by the button and let it go.  The large battery-powered fan he carries to tournaments must be of genuine relief here - it's a sweaty hot day outside, and rapidly becoming so inside too.  I even saw a guy with a hand fan, you know, the folding kind you wave yourself.

Short stacks which won a big pot and aren't so short any more:  Nicolas Levi - A little earlier it looked like his stack was on the decline, but he got a few chips check-calling Luis Sevilla's chunky in-position flop bet (having called a raise in the s.b. and come threeway to a 4d Ks Ahrt flop) of 2,450.  He checked the Ac turn, and also the 9h river, but there was no further action generated by Sevilla and Levi flipped Aspades Qd when it was all over saying, "Nice check on the river.  Must have a pair..."

This Luis Sevilla fellow (pictured) appears (from the small sample size you can gather before being moved on lest you bring censure on the Press as a whole for Loitering) to be a bit of a menace.

Two early limpers, one of them being Bruno Fitoussi, and Sevilla ups it to 1,400 preflop.  The limpers call while the blinds duck out.
Flop: Qc 6h 4h  Check, check.  Over to Sevilla to bet, and bet he does - 3,250.  The first limper (the guy in the pink shirt) flats, only to find Bruno moving all-in for a total bet of 8,600.  Sevilla thinks for a while before calling the extra 5k and that gets it heads up.

Turn and river...4d....Kc and they split the pot with someone almost wistfully commenting, "Nice freeroll."  Pictured - the moment Bruno moved in and both players were left thinking, looking at him, the pot, the bet size etc. etc. while he had any tension he himself might have been experiencing squeezed out of his head by Frieda.

Another player who looks to be a bit of a brightly-coloured thorn in the side of his table is this guy, whom I was going to add as a late Hoody of the Day, seeing as his hoody has a large skull with rhinestone teeth on the back, small shiny jewelled skulls, giant gold and black chains down his arms, another large skull and golden flowers on the front, and the whole thing is that phenomenal turquoise colour.  But while trying to surreptitiously snap his outfit, it became apparent that not only did he have a healthy stack, but he wasn't exactly keeping a vice-like grip on it, getting involved in a lot of pots and generally putting the pressure on the others.  One hand I saw him play he was promptly re-raised by a player on his left and he gave up, having only invested 1,200 or so preflop. 

The very next hand, he raised again, and it folded round to this extremely youthful chap in the blinds who moved in for around 5,500.  He got a quick call from Turquoise Hoody who flipped 5c 5s, against the all in Ac 9h.

Julian hasn't managed to accumulate a stack just yet and is down to 7k or so. He motioned over to one of the adjacent tables though where the Swede Michael Lundel has accumulated a GIANT stack that looks to be round the 60k mark at this point.

"He just had AA versus A-K on a King high board. Took 20,000 off the guy...poker's an easy game sometimes!" joked Julian.

Michael looks to be a relatively unknown player, many of the press are unfamiliar with him but he's goiing great at the moment and if he maintains momentum, he'll be tough to stop.

On my latest perambulation round the card room, there was a glut of big hands.

One of the spanish reporters approached me as we watched yet another small pot play out with little or no action. "Ohhh man! I hoped that would be the one!"

In truth it has been an exciting day, with lots of aggressive poker but for some reason there seems to have been a recent lull in the previous explosive action. Maybe the players are getting just a little tired...

One player who has ground manfully away today and hung in there without ever being able to get a decent stack going is Mark "Randall" Flower, who was so close to ETP San Remo glory, missing out by just one spot on the final nine players.

Still, he'd no doubt take 9th spot in this competition right now, seeing as he only has his starting stack left at this point of just under 10k...

Intense young Norwegian Ulriksen (pictured) had amassed a very tidy stack of 62,000 by this, the penultimate level of the night.  Accumulating throughout the day, one hand undid a good deal of his good work.  With a decent, though not monstrous pot underway, a small-blind Ulriksen was heads up with Matey (sorry, this will all stop tomorrow when we can easily identify the remaining 300 or so), and had just bet out 8,000 on a board reading 8s Kh 6d 6h.  The splash of red 1k chips drew the press to the table, as Matey thought for a while, and then pushed in the two medium-sized stacks he had left.  Without a countdown, he quickly made the call:

Ulriksen made a noise which sounded like a cross between a growl and a cough as the river bricked 2c before finding out that he had to give up 22,100 to his opponent who'd hit the perfect turn card.  I don't know how the betting on the flop and pre went, sadly, as that would have been interesting to know.  But it was very obvious that Ulriksen wasn't happy one bit.  A stretch standing up facing away from the table and furiously pressing a button on his mobile looks to cure him.  To be fair, the very close warm, people-filled atmosphere of the casino can't be helping players' temper any - only Julian with his big fan remains literally cool.

"Nice hand," he said, in a tone of voice which had he been outside would have attracted lightning.

Holding 6-3 in the BB and forced to play, the flop fell out 7-3-2. He led and received two callers...

The turn was a 6 to give him two pair but bringing straights into play. He check called 2k...

The river was a relative blank and he put out what he said was a stop bet, only for his opponent to raise him...

"I felt like he would only riase with a made hand there so I threw them away. I'm 90% sure I was right" but he was left with a nagging doubt as his opponent didn't show his hand.

Jonas Klausen, the Dane who has come close to some big results but has never quite nailed it, is on over 100k at the moment and in prime position.

Also well placed is Sebastian Ruthenberg, the German who picked up a bracelet in the world series, defeating none other than Chris Ferguson heads up at seven stud hi/lo.

He also has just over 100k...

Michael Lundel and his stripy shirt are also in the select centurion club and fighting for the lead at this point...

The tiny but fearsome scarf wearing Italian Dario Minieri is a late casualty of the day, having been battling with a short stack for some time now and Sean Deeb has also joined him on the rail as well (though he won the last longer bet with his dad.)

Fore those who wants more information, Vikash Dhorasso was a former international football player whose career has ended prematurely few years ago who played in clubs like Paris SG and Lyon and in a well-known-out-of-France one (Milan AC or Barcelona I think but not sure).

finished on 10,700 & met chufty & bepe at the bar afterwards - we're all thru & i've got the most chips lol.

trond continues to impress - was having a chat yesterday & whilst he is here in barcelona playing cash he said it's breaking his heart not play the ept, but he refuses to pull up that much money until/unless he lands a deal.
