Title: Brendan Hartnett ... Memories
Post by: Colchester Kev on September 21, 2008, 12:22:01 PM
I remember the first time I met Brendan, he came scooting up to me on his buggy, introduced himself and then spent the next hour holding court in the lobby of a hotel as various blonde members arrived for one of our get togethers ... I particularly remember everyone howling with laughter when someone asked if his online alias "EricStoner" was chosen because he liked a bit of the old whacky baccy ... he must have had to explain dozens of times that it referred to the film "The Cincinnati Kid" and not some other reference ....

Over the time I have known Brendan, Myself and Jane (Ginger) had come to be Brendans unofficial support team, whenever we were at the same events, we would share cabs and stay in the same hotels and generally hang out together.

We met a lot of times over the following years, A few trips that come to mind were Ireland, Dublin to be precise and the APAT event where Brendan finished second after being down to a bowl of rice 9 handed on the final table ... There were a good few blondes surrounding that final table and we all cheered wildly when Brendan won a pot. His heads up opponent must have wondered who this superstar with all the fans was, It was a great day and Brendan was in top form.

Cardiff, another APAT event where Brendan stunned us all by making his way into the casino on crutches !! those of us who knew him well cheered and clapped and swallowed hard to hide our emotions ... there were a lot of big butch poker players with misty eyes that day.

Ireland again, and the blonde Waterford festival, Brendan is there again, he loved the Irish tournies and he was great fun over that trip as well ... Although his driving skills were the subject of much ribbing for months afterwards LOL

Brendan was not a loud man, not an attention seeker, he carried himself with so much dignity that you couldn't fail to be impressed with Brendan the man, he just turned up, got on with it, had a drink and a laugh and a chat with everyone.

Brendan's passing has left an empty chair at the blonde table, and the true measure of the man can be summed up by the sheer amount of sadness that was expressed by his friends on blonde, I must have had teary phone conversations with upwards of a dozen blondes on the evening that we heard the news, all said the same thing, "It cant be true, Brendan is invincible", its funny, we all really did think that .. Brendan had been through so many rough times and came through them that we all just felt he was invincible.

I was thinking the other day, I must have lifted Brendans scooter into cabs dozens of times in various countries .. I always used to joke with him that when my back goes, he would have to look after me and lift me into taxis .... I, like countless others will miss him, but never forget him.

The fact that Brendan will be missed by everyone who met him sums up the man in a nutshell.

Im sure many others will want to share their memories of time spent with Brendan, please do.

A lot of my thoughts would echo Kev's

Firstly it was very moving to a number of us to hear Glenn Bigfella's tribute to Brendan at bb7 yesterday. I looked after the condolence book overnight and that itself is a very moving book.

I knew Brendan through blonde of course, and through APAT. Of course see Brendan walking in Cardiff stands out, as does the Dublin APAT final table. Oh, and not forgetting the Waterford car ride of legend!

He and I talked about racing (he was very knowledgeable) and sport in general, and he was always an engaging companion. On several occasions at events it was obvious Brendan was struggling, but he had a load of guts and bravery..carried on through it all.

I heard Brendan had passed away while waiting to meet someone for what I felt was an important meeting. The other person knew Brendan well too. Both of us went through the motions, as the importance of what we were discussing was far far less than we had thought an hour beforehand.

It was announced yesterday that in future blonde bashes will be played for the "Brendan Hartnett Trophy".

In that small way blonde Poker will remember one if its most popular members.

Taken from his self written Blonde profile if thats ok:

Who is your ideal man or woman?

Mr Mick Bewick......the sergoen who did all my transplants, and who brought me back from the brink when an artuary burst in my leg one saturday morning while in intensive care in july 1986.and to the young policemen who queued in line to give me 40 units of blood on that morning in Dulwich hospital. Think of all the things i'd have missed.
[/b]

I only spoker to him once, at BB6, but doesnt that last line sum up a great attitude to the fight he had...

Apart from the fact you nicked Brendan’s money from his blondepoker account after he passed away. I then kindly offered to help you out to the tune of $700 to sort your life out which you never bothered to pay back you thief.

Had completely forgotten about this...... ;tracet;
