Players have been called over to the final two tables, so it would appear as though we're going to be blessed with a prompt start. I don't know about you, but I haven't been this excited since Dana first said, "Get ya coat, luv, ya'v pulled."

On the very first hand, Brian Clarke defended his big bind to Zachary Ford's early position preflop raise, but check-folded on a raggy flop. Ford generously showed kings. "Keep em coming," he asked the dealer. "I'm feeling positive today."

Let's hope he booked a hotel rather than came from home, as the first player to hit the deck today is German amateur Herbert Kasbauer. An online qualifier more accustomed to $5 and $10 STTs, Kasbauer found himself all in with Kh Td versus the Ad 6d of Brian Clarke. A 9d 9s 9h 3h Qc board aided nobody, meaning Clarke had well and truly rocked the Kasbauer.

I think you can tell from the photo which members of the rail have a percentage in Kasbauer and which have taken a punt on Clarke.

Zachary Ford raises to 32k from the small blind and Guy Johnson flat-calls from the big but folds to a 40k bet on the Qc Tc 9h flop after Ford says he only has 112k behind when Johnson asks for a count. Johnson rueing not pushing pre?

No luck for the Welsh today. Gareth Jones raises to 33.5k and Martyn Cavanagh sets him all-in, after a good couple of minutes, Jones calls and it's on their backs.

Jones: Aspades Qs
Cavanagh: Ahrt Kd

Jh 2s Ts 7s 6s

Martyn Cavanagh is down to about 40k.

On the other table Damian Evans raises the button and Alan Vinson sets him in from the big blind. After a minute, Evans says, "Yeah, I'll call that."

Evans: Ac Ts
Vinson: Ad Qs

4c Td Ahrt 2h 8h

A tap of the table from Vinson who is knocked back to about 400k. Evans is up to about the same.

I have Hoivold against Peter from BlueSq who has taken Vinson. One time!!!

Even with dad Alan watching closely from the sidelines, Martyn (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=270) Cavanagh (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=270) couldn't turn his shrapnel into a pot of gold. With just circa 35,000 remaining after his previous loss, Cavanagh allowed the big blind to hit and called all-in, although reluctantly, when Darren (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=134) Hickman (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=134) pushed from the small blind. As Hickman revealed a bullet, Cavanagh said dejectedly, "Yeah, that was what I was worried about."

Cavanagh = Ac 3c

Hickman = Aspades Jc

Board = 6c 9c 5s 6d Jh

Sunny Chattha is out after a punishing button vs big blind occurence.

Sunny raised the button only to find himself being repopped by Andreas Hoivold. Sunny quickly announced all-in for around 350k and Andreas asked for a count before thinking for about 30 seconds and calling.

Sunny showed 7c 7s and was utterly dismayed when Hoivold flipped Js Jd.

"Seven!" pleaded Sunny as the board came 3h 4c Tc Qc ("Club!") Kh. No luck for the Hitsquadder who goes out just off the final table in agony just as he did in Plymouth last year.

His exit was followed soon after by Stephen Slavin who was all-in with Td Ts against Darren Hickman's Jd Js on a 7h 2d Qd board but couldn't hit after running Fours appeared on the turn and river.

Final Table Potraits and Chip Counts to Follow.

Guy Johnson - chartered accountant from Leeds
Eddie Lundon - works as an aircraft engineer
Alan Vinson - second GUKPT main event final to date
Damian Evans - is a company director
Andreas Hoivold - second Norwegian to make a GUKPT main event final

First blood to Andreas Hoivold. The Norwegian raised to 32,000 preflop and picked up the blinds uncontested.

On the second hand, the action passed around to Guy Johnson who pushed all in from the small blind. Eddie Lundon conceded his big.

Then, on the next hand, Zachary Ford bumped it up to a total of 35,000, which was enough to take down the pot preflop.

Title: Re: BlueSq.com GUKPT Blackpool: Final Day

Gareth Jones raised to 36,000 preflop and Darren Hickman defended from the big blind. On a Jc Qh Qs flop, Jones took it down with a continuation bet of 58,000.

The final table particpants had no idea of the death and destruction that was heading their way as the evil white umbrella came to crush them all....

Incidentally, the dealer here, the pixie-ish Katie, is a true 'dealer of death' with non-stop coolers a speciality, as we witnessed in the cash games last night.

Title: Re: BlueSq.com GUKPT Blackpool: Final Day
Post by: snoopy1239 on November 16, 2008, 04:08:58 PM
Zachary Ford made it 38,000 from the small blind, Gareth Jones bumped it up to 90,000 and Ford made the fold.

On the following hand, Andreas Hoivold raised it up to 32,000 from the cut-off, only for Zachary Ford to push all in from the button. Hoivold passed.

It's been an aggressive start to this final table, but we're still lacking a showdown.

Title: Re: BlueSq.com GUKPT Blackpool: Final Day
Post by: NoflopsHomer on November 16, 2008, 04:14:30 PM
Zachary Ford raises it up and Alan Vinson calls from the big blind.

9h Ks 6c

Vinson checks, Ford bets 50k. Alan moves in and Ford calls.

Vinson: 9c 7c
Ford: 9s 8s

6h

Tc

Chop chop.

Neil Channing, "Everyone seems to have a plan, which is just to push whenever Andreas raises, but Andreas isn't stupid, he'll just start calling them lighter."

Right out of the blue, we witness a double through, Damian Evan's late position push with 6h 6s being snap-called by Zachary Ford in the big blind with Ahrt Ks. The Ac Qc 2h Kh Jh board means Evans is now on 65,000 and looking likely to be our first final table exit.

Brian Martin pushes and takes the blinds.

Eddie Lundon raises and takes the blinds.

Andreas Hoivold makes it 32k to play and Guy Johnson thinks about reraising before just calling.

Qc Js 4c

Check from Johnson, 41k from Hoivold and Johnson fiddles with his 10k chips before then announcing all.

"Count please," says Hoivold. It's 326k more for the Norwegian but he folds.

Damian Evans is OUT and becomes the 9th place finisher winning £7,650

With a desperately short-stacked Damian Evans sitting on the small blind, the action passed around to Alan (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1197) Vinson (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1197) who nonchalantly announced all-in from the small blind. Evans shrugged his shoulders before calling all-in for the coppers he had left and turned over Qs 2d. Vinson tabled Tc 5d. Evan's apprehensive expression was perhaps an omen as the board came 7s 5s 3h 9c Ks to eliminate him in ninth.

Guy Johnson raises to 32k and Zachary (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2249) Ford (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2249) bumps it up to 82k from the big blind. Johnson dwells for ages alluding to the fact he might have a small pair saying, "I'm not even sure a low flop would be safe."

He passes.

Next hand he raises again and once more Ford calls from the small blind.

Guy Johnson is OUT and becomes the 8th place finisher winning £10,250

Guy Johnson raised to 36,000 from UTG, only for Zachary Ford to make it a total of 100,000 to play from late position. After asking for a count (the answer was approximately 500,000), Johnson smooth-called.

With the Ts Jc 4h flop barely dealt, Johnson announced all-in and Ford called.

A hand later, and Eddie Lundon is inevitably all in again, but this time there is signs of a strong hand as Andreas (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=467) Hoivold (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=467) had raised before him.

Hoivold = Kh Js

Lundon = Ac Qh

With that last exit, the game has turned very cagey with players perhaps fully aware of the sudden jumps in money for the remaining exits. As such, it's been mainly blind stealing (or, obviously, taking - with the goods), with Andreas Hoivold (x2), Alan Vinson, Darren Hickman and Brian Clarke picking up the blinds uncontested over the last several hands.

It's slowed right down here and the only thing more popular than the open raise followed by everyone folding, is the amount of people yawning at the current monotony.

The blinds are being passed around at the moment and nothing is really happening about from one Brian Martin reraise to 145k against Zachary Ford's initial 45k raise. But no flops or anything else going on right now...

It's been rather frustrating times for Andreas (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=467) Hoivold (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=467) since taking the scalp of Darren (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=134) Hickman (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=134), the Norwegian seeing two preflop raises of 52,000 being reraised behind, once by Zachary (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2249) Ford (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2249) and the other Alan (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1197) Vinson (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1197). Both times Hoivold folded with a grimace, but on the next hand, he did triumph in a battle of the blinds to retrieve some of those chips, checking down an Ac Ahrt Th Qs board with Vinson before value-betting 20,000 with Jd Ts on the 8d river. Vinson called with an eight.

Alan Vinson raises to 70k on the button. Andreas Hoivold calls from the small blind. Zachary Ford, who I was about to say hasn't done much in the last couple of hours, suddenly moves all-in and gets both opponents to fold.

Andreas, "I think I had the best hand, I should've reraised preflop."

In other news, Sam Trickett has won the £300 event. Red Dog picked up 5th.

Alan Vinson raises to 70k twice in a row and gets the blinds.

Andreas Hoivold than raises to 55k and purloins the blinds.

Brian Martin moves all-in. Gets blinds.

In a blind vs blind battle, Hoivold takes a pot on the turn of a 3d 8c Ts 6s board against Zachary Ford.

Next hand Alan Vinson raises to 70k UTG, Andreas Hoivold reraises to 190k, back around to Vinson who quickly moves in and Hoivold is visibly annoyed by this. The Norwegian has about 500k back and really gets deep in thought.

It looks like some sort of 77/AJ type hand and Andreas lets out a little frustrated moan before passing. Vinson really has had the better of the former EPT Dortmund champion on the final table today.

Much to the delight of the fatigued bloggers (seriously, he's one of the AWOPer's dads), Brian Clarke has just doubled through off Zachary (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2249) Ford (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2249). Once Clarke had moved all in over the top of Ford's opening 60,000 raise, it was only an extra 100,000 to play, so Ford made the near obligatory call.

20 minute break. (The clock has now gone to 45 minutes per level)

A brief conversation with Andreas Hoivold revealed he's had A-K once and had to fold to an all-in on a blank flop and no other hands, "Every hand and I pick up I have either a 7 or a 3..." When asked about the hand where he reraised to 190k, he said he had K-Q suited. "We both had about 400k/500k behind, if hadn't been for the short stack [Brian Martin] or if he'd had a lot of chips, I probably would've called."

An uneventful start post-break. Brian Clarke pushed preflop for some extra chips, and Hoivold took one on a 9-9-Q-A board, but it's Zachary Ford who's won the most pots recently. Receiving a walk on the first hand, he pushed Clarke off his blind on the next and stole the blinds a couple of hands later.

Andreas steals the blinds with a 70k raise from the button.

Next hand he raises again and Alan Vinson sets him in from the big blind. The Norwegian snap-calls.

Vinson: Aspades 4c
Hoivold: Ahrt Kh

Qc 2s 6d 7h 9h

Double up to for Andreas, both he and Alan have about a million with Zachary Ford still chip leader and Brian Clarke behind.

As seems to be a trend, Zachary Ford put pressure on Brian Clarke's big blind by raising from the small blind, this time to the tune of 77,000. Clarke made the call, but folded to Ford's leading bet of 110,000.

A lot of raise, pass, pass, pass going on at the moment.

The only noteworthy hand, was between Zachary Ford and Brian Clarke in a limped pot sb vs bb.

Th 8s 7c

Both players check.

Js

Zachary bets 30k. Call.

5h

Zach checks, Brian bets 40k. Call.

Brian flips 9c 7s, it's good. Brian Clarke plays a very solid game, I don't think he'd actually bet anything other than a straight here.

Last four hands prior to a 15 minute break:

(1) Brian Clarke pushed all in for around 850,000 from the button to pick up the blinds uncontested.

(2) Andreas Hoivold took the blinds with a preflop button raise of 80,000.

(3) Clarke limped from the small blind, Hoivold made it 70,000 more and Clarke called. Clarke check-folded to a bet of 140,000 on a 4d 8h 9h flop.

(4) Hoivold limped from the small blind and Ford checked his option in the big before the two players checked down a Ks 9h Tc Jd 4s, both players seeing their money returned with Ac 7c versus Ad 6s respectively.

The atmosphere in here is electric!

Brian Clarke announces all-in and after sinking into his seat, Zachary (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2249) Ford (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2249) leaps into the air like an epileptic salmon, says "fuck it" and calls.

Ford drops 8c 8h onto the table.

Clarke flips 8s 8d.

The crowd go wild, before chanting for a flush. Sickos!

However, no such occurrence emerges as the board comes blankety blank to chop it up.

It's a limped pot.

Kc Tc Td

Check check

3d

Brian checks, Zachary bets 50k, Brian calls.

7s

Brian checks, Zachary bets 110k, Brian calls. Zachary mucks, Brian shows 6s 3s.

Zachary might not have wanted to bluff again on the river, it didn't look like Brian was passing after the turn, plus with all the crowd tending to root for Brian, he perhaps might want to make the big call for them. Neverthless his strategy of just letting Zachary bluff at him might just work.

Incidentally, after the double up with J-9 vs 8-8, a £75k each deal was done with £2k left and the seat to play for.

Snoopy, "Of course, they do a deal and THEN they tighten up, what's up with that?"

I'm back in the hotel now, tucked up in my nice warm bed, but before I crack on with the end-of-day William  (http://www.williamhillpoker.com/)Hill (http://www.williamhillpoker.com/) report, just a quick word on our eventual winner Brian Clarke. Although he ran well on the final table, he played a solid game throughout and perhaps deserved some of the luck that was embellished upon him in the end. More importantly, however, his win encapsulated some of the aspects of poker that make the game so attractive. As a single dad who works as a nightwatchman on the Blackpool pier, winning this event was probably just a distant pipe dream, but every time a player dropped out and he climbed another rung of the ladder, that dream gradually became more and more of a possibility.

As an amateur who is more accustomed to playing £10 comps down the local pub, the monies received from this victory will probably mean more to him than they did to any of the previous GUKPT winners. As he accepted his prize, it was clearly a proud moment for Brian as he fought in vain to stop the tears from flowing. In this sense, it was a joy to see someone so proud and overwhelmed take down the title. A big congratulations to him, at times in the comp he was a gent among table bangers, so let's hope we see him playing a few more of these GUKPTs come season three. But before that, he's got a Grand Final to win. Well done, Brian.  ;applause;

great updates, vul martin cavanagh just before the final table, did'nt deserve that - very well played m8

well done to the others especially andreas and alan who played great.

as for brian, what a amazing story, played with him for 2 days and he never had a stack, but hung in (thayer system ftw) he did'nt put a foot wrong except once when he shoved with Q7 UTG after he lost a big pot. used his image VERY well, especially in late position, you dont get this far with just luck alone. congratulations to him and his family. one for the good guys.

LOL There are enough people who play week in week out to comfortably make sure the game survives when one person has a scoop and doesnt spunk it back.

It was capped at 80 but they got a lot of alternates in (53 I think)

BTW- That post count is coming along nicely Rich.

It was initially capped at 80 players, but increased to 110 or 120 (can't remember which) when more tables became available on the day, so it was slightly fewer than 53 that got in as alternates.
