Title: BlueSq.com GUKPT Grand Final - Day 1a
Post by: danafish on November 26, 2008, 09:19:30 PM
Hello and welcome to London!

This update currently comes to you from the sofa in the blonde updating den, but come 2pm tomorrow there will be a veritable pack of blonde updaters down at the Grosvenor Victoria casino, hungry and ready to pounce on any shred of excellent poker action that may present itself before our slavering notebooks and razor-sharp pencils, as the UK's very finest battle it out to decide who will be crowned the ultimate 2008 Blue Square poker god.

That may be the longest sentence I have ever written, but it will all be snappy and to the point tomorrow as we leg it around the Vic to make sure you don't miss any of the action. Everyone who's a recession-proof anyone will be coughing up the requisite £3,000 to play, so take your picks now!

We're here!  The Vic is currently expecting upwards of 80 players for today's first flight.  Grey skies and the Edgware Road Windchill factor haven't put off the poker travellers, and we're just about to hear the final "Shuffle up and deal" of the 2008 Grosvenor UK Poker Tour...

We'll keep an eye out for all your guys - still no idea who's playing when - but we'll know in about five minutes (except for the late reg.ers in the first two levels).

Seeing as there are lots of predictions out there, here's mine...

I thought Chris played really well at the last tournament I saw him in, EPT Budapest, before succumbing to a rather nasty beat but this could be the tournament where he translates his red-hot online form into live success.

Go the Moomin!

Normally at the GUKPTs there are a smattering of pros mixed in with a relative sea of hopefuls but the Grand Final is no normal GUKPT.

Here, the tables are pro-heavy in the extreme, leading to some interesting table draws.

In an unlilkely turn-up for the books, Chris Moorman and John-Paul Kelly have been matched up in an exciting battle of the Brightonians. Already there has been some verbal sparring...

With JP limping UTG on Chris' big blind, ("Look at this!" Chris exclaimed, flabbergasted by JP's audaciousness...) Ross Boatman in UTG+2 popped it up to 300, only for Moorman to pass and JP...called.

The flop fell 9s 8d 8h and a check from JP elicited a bet of 500 from Ross. "Call" said JP matching the 500.

The turn (Qd) and river (7c) were checked down, only for Ross to turn up A-K and JP to turn up a winning 2-2.

"Fish!" mocked Moorman as Kelly swept up the chips gleefully.

"I'm the fish, I should have bet the turn!" said Ross with the merest hint of regret...

is it two day ones? or just 80 runners over 4 days with a slower structure than a normal GUKPT?

On a slightly unrelated note, I was surprised to hear today Gordon Brown is saying that lessons will be learnt from the man in Sheffield who repeatedly raped his daughters over 27 years. Surely he’s not a suitable person to be advising the government.

Yes there are two day ones  and the structure is similar but with 50% more chips (sweet!)

It's anticipated tomorrow will bring in another 100 runners or so, though it will all depend on how many late registrations there are.

loads of MOOOOOOOOOOOOOMin updates plz

Ready...steady... GO!

Moorman off to a flying start, up a few thousand and recently betting off an opponent on a spade-filled flop and showing Ad Ahrt for the general amusement of JP, it looked like.

Just now he bet 350 on a board of Ahrt Jh xDiamond and in-position opponent Ross Boatman raised to an even 1k.  Moorman called, the turn brought the Kd.  Check from both of them.  The river brought the 5h and a bet out of 1,500 from Moorman, and a flat final call.  Over sailed Chris' Kh Qh for the flush, and an early accumulation period seems to be treating him well.

He did not look like this, however, when losing a hand in the first half of the first level.  His composure didn't crack an inch as I caught him betting the river with a board reading 9d Jd Ks 4c 2h to the tune of 1,125.  His opponent merely flat called - Karl's hand immediately appeared face-up; I can't see so well at the best of times when not actually looming directly over the table, and was just about to write down that his bluff had been called with 9s 8h by Js Jh for second set, when Junglecat informed me that the speed at which Karl's hand first was shown and then mucked signified an early set-over-set situation.  Could have been costlier, in that case...

Yes, imagine our surprise at finding European Deepstack chopper and erstwhile blonde Irish correspondent Gary "Mclovin" Clarke at the tables. He won a seat online and is very pleased to be here. Probably. He didn't say.

Spaces originally left with chips signify latecomers who've paid the £3,000 - slowly the full picture emerges.  Every table seems to have a previous GUKPT winner sat on it somewhere, which isn't surprising as they all got seats to this event as part of the winners' packages, along with a suitcase of Sterling and a nice trophy.  And a watch, I think.

Anyway, this table pictured above was six-handed when the tournament started but now has JJ Hazan (Seat One - OK, he made it on time), Praz Bansi (prior winner) Andrew Teng (seat 4, just won one), Steve Jelinek (seat 6).  Full list of players coming as soon as Alternate Hour draws to a close.

Although this tournament is about as UK-star-studded as they come (player list shortly!), the atmosphere is currently a bit muted, with little of the party atmosphere that sometimes pervades GUKPTs. Currently at this prestigious championship  event, there are exactly three railers, of whom one is reading the paper, one is nursing a pint and staring at the floor and one appears to be chewing on his wallet. This is tense stuff.

Nevertheless it's early days yet, with the number of runners on the board still slowly creeping up rather than dropping down with not a single player eliminated thus far (or "kicked out", as the dude from Gutshot put it). I expect the party atmosphere to kick in roughly when they start handing out glasses of wine...

Butters says: "Woo, par-tay."

Two players who stand out as big hitters even amongst this celebrated field are Ben Grundy, whose online Omaha stats are legendary, and John Tabatabai, who allies a superstrong NLHE poker game with an almost Roberto Romanello-esque ability to maintain a constant stream of table-talk while playing.

Ben is in fine fettle - "I'm not hungover for a change!" - and was last heard challenging Tabatabai to a last shorter bet.

"I'm great at those!" said Ben with perhaps undue pride and Tabatabai agreed heartily with the Milkybarkid's assessment.

John often wears eye-catching, dramatically emblazoned t-shirts and hoodies to poker events and today is no exception. Here is some sort of  bling-encrusted death moth for your enjoyment. Sweet dreams!

You could spend all day picking out top poker players in this field.

Here's one of them, Iwan (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=180) Jones (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=180), the dangerous Welshman, who looks battle-hardened and ready for some tough poker out there.

Iwan's a top man but I couldn't help but find this comparison a little spooky?

Table Of Doom

This title is usually reserved for the ludicrously tough pro-studded table in any given tournament, but seeing as they're all a bit like that today, I am pronouncing table 6 to be our Ace-Cracking Table of Destruction. Aces have been cracked no less than four times that they know of over there, and twice they were the property of hapless Terence Owens. "That's the stack of aces cracked twice," he half-sighed, half-giggled as he looked down at his remaining 6.5k. Yikes. Another loser on the table seems to be Talal Shakerchi, down to around 10,000; the biggest winner on the table is Steve Jelinek, currently perched happily on 25,000 or so. I am cautiously declaring him chip leader, until a bigger stack comes to my attention.

1. Yes, though Chris' table is only jsut about visible from the bar, given that it is on the other side of the room.

2. However on the plus side, there is a toilet right next to the bar, though I think they prefer you to stick to more legal and traditional activities in there (throwing up after your aces get cracked etc).

I would give the players an hour or two to warm up before you come and throw yourself into the festivities. By then there should be a healthy throng on the rail getting drunk in the bar.

Terence Owens might have been our first Kicked Out Player of the day, except for the minor point that the other guy folded and he picked up the pot instead. Owens (crippled after that whole getting his aces cracked twice episode) seems to have check-raised all in on a  4s 9h 5c flop and the gent to his left (for some reason not on our seating plan) eventually folded  8s 8c face up, though still claiming, "I think I was way ahead..."

Pippa More than Pipped at River...

A pot of around 3,000 had grown between Pippa Flanders and Patrik Selin by the turn, with the board standing 9d 7d 6c 9h.  Both players checked or bet and called so fast it looked like they didn't move at all (I am going for the former) and the river came 3c.  Flanders now bet out 1,500, called quickly by Selin whose Ac Ad were of mild surprise, perhaps, to her, who calmly showed down the pure bluff Jh Qh, mucked and waited patiently for the next hand.  Peace reigns in the card room.

It's like someone's put tranquilisers in the whole room's water.  Or something radioactive, as in the case of this mystery drink, glowing serenely green amongst the novelty GUKPT mint boxes.

Finally! Just before the first break, the cry of "One down!" at last echoes around the card room. Somehow crippled down to just 1,175, Dean Lyall open-shoved under the gun and got himself a call from Tony Cascarino, followed, much to Cascarino's dismay, by a reraise from Adam Clark. Cascarino made a face and passed, and they were on their backs.

Lyall: 9d Tc
Clark: Ad 4s

To the soundtrack of Cascarino bemoaning not shoving over the top of Clark, the board came down Ac 7h 4d 3s Qs and this tournament is properly underway!

Will Kassouf appears to be on his last tournament legs already.  Something prior to this hand must have been even more dramatic to report than this one, judging by his <7k stack at the start of it, but you get what my middle-distance staredar picks up:

A pot of 3,650 had built up between Kassouf and John Tabatabai, who was so quiet during the hand (and who'd put on a plain sort of overhoody) that I referred to him as Matey and only recognised him in the final moments of its play.   Tabatabai had bet out 3,200 on the river with the board Aspades 4s 2h 7s Qh.  A long dwell ensued as Kassouf considered his remaining 4,300 chips and the bet, and Tabatabai, and the board.  You know how it goes.  Eventually he made the call (leaving himself just 1,100 behind) and nod-folded when John flipped the Js 9s.

Mr Clarke is turning on the super-aggressive craziness that characterizes most everything about him except his entire personality. Barny Boatman raised to 350 from the hijack, called by both Abhishek Khaitan in the cutoff and John Tabatabai on the button -- but all three laid it down when Action Gary made it 2k from the small blind.

"My table is tough!" laments hatted Stu Rutter, with pictured in-position players Dave Colclough and Sam Trickett proving his point.  But just now the aggressive youngsters all backed off a preflop repop challenge presented by Ariel Adda.  My attention was drawn by Tricket saying, "Will you show if I fold?" repeatedly, while a hefty 3,350 sat in front of Adda.  Stu Rutter had been in there originally, but had gotten out of the way by the time Sam was considering the raise.  It looked like he'd only put in 850, and gave it up preflop.  "I had AK," said Stu, and I, for one, believe him.

John Tabatabatabatabatabai has just now taken down an enormous pot. I only caught the end of it and thus am not entirely sure how this came to pass, but on the river Tabatabai turned over pocket sevens for a set and Mats Gavatin mucked; Tabatabai briefly wandered off, probably to celebrate privately where no-one could hear him cackle, and is now on over 35k. Mr Gavatin is down to 11k.

Tony "Ginger" Phillips has dropped a little to around the 10k mark. He called a 1.5k bet from Ctrl V Of The Day contender Tore Lukashaugen on the river of a  Qh Qd 3s 3h 3c board, but mucked when Lukashaugen turned over Qc Js for a higher full house than the one quite obviously on the board.

STOP!

Double time!

First up, a double up for the rollercoasting Will Kassouf. He got it all in on a Tc Js 7h flop with, as it turned out, the extremely mighty Jc Jh. "Oh," said caller Barny Boatman, turning over Ac Ks, "I thought I'd be in better shape than that." Some but not enough help for the Boatman on the Kh turn and 5c river, and Kassouf's up to 6.5k, Barny's down to 11k.

-----------

Double up number two:

From the notepad of the lovely Dena (business must be bad if she's auditioning for an updating job, but thanks!), Michael Moore got it in preflop with pocket nines against the A-K of Ganesh Rao and it must have been an emotional ride for the both of them all the way down the 3-J-5-K-9 board.

Actually there's been no improvement on Bad Pictures of Karl since Dana's early attempt.  He does feature in one of two interesting-but-could-have-been-more-interesting pots I witnessed though -

Karl made the bold check-raise all in on river move against neighbour David Lloyd just now.  The board stood 2c Qc 2s Th 8d, and Lloyd had fired 2k into a pot of just under 7k on the river when Karl checked to him.  When Mahrenholz calmly placed in enough chips to cover his opponent - a further 8-9k - the understandable dwell began.

I warmly invite you to stare at this photo for around three and a half minutes if you'd like to know what that part of the hand was like.

Then he folded and although a cluster of people had gathered tableside to watch the river carnage, we were all secretly a bit disappointed when Karl did that nonchalant one-finger muck and scooped the pot without a word.

Here is recent Bustee Christopher Ulsrud, his crippling hand involving him betting out a 4h 7d Jc Ah 2s board, only for the Streetfighter-y named Long Zhang to raise. Ulsrud shoved, Zhang insta-called, shouted "Ha-DO-Ken!" and did three fireballs and a dragon punch, before flipping up 3-5 to the bemusement of Ulsrud.

Here he is looking daggers at his Nemesis.

Miserable Table Of The Day

Messrs Paul (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1469) Ephremsen (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1469), Daniel Tafur, Paul (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=326) Jackson (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=326), Martin (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1420) Bader (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1420), Jonothon (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1220) Butters (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1220), Richard (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=368) Gryko (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=368), Henrik Nowakowski and John (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1515) Eames (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1515) are having absolutely no fun at all, with the sighing and harumphing and the sitting in the dark and the nobody talking to each other as far as I can see shenanigans.

Hold your horses, Ms. Immanuel - while the unfavourable lighting has kept me from this table until now, the second of my interesting-but-could-have-been-more-so hands actually involves these selfsame players.

Paul Jackson raised to 325 from the cutoff.  Over to button Martin Bader (shiny guy on rhs of photo), who repopped it to 1,200.  Over to the blinds, where bb Richard Gryko thought about it for a moment and then made it comfortably over 4,000.  Clearly a nonbeliever in himself either, Bader instapassed after Jackson.  Bustling with vivacious conversation, I have given them a mini comic to illustrate how not true Dana's blanket characterisation of the Table of Misery is:*

As I return to the cardroom with my sad emergency apple, I am just in time to witness Tie Of The Day owner Jan Bendik doubling through Christopher Skinner, his Ahrt Kh starting ahead of Skinner's Js Qs and staying in the lead all the way down the 6s 8h Ac Qd 2h board to double up Mr Bendik to around 12,000.

A bit short after that, Skinner busted out soon after.

Mclovin Watch

Is he Mclovin it?

On a scale of one to Mclovin it, I put Mr Clarke on about a six at the moment. He's dropped a little to around 11.5k and looks a little glum tbh. Still an eminently playable stack though. Here he is in a photo from earlier in the day when he was cheerier:

Other Chip Counts (full lot done during dinner break at the end of this level):

Andreas Hoivold - 4,200
Stu Rutter - 18,000
Dave Colclough - 15,000
Sam Trickett - 20,500
Dan Carter - 30,000

All of these are now sharing a table.  Sam joins the list of players on that table who have complained about being on that table.  "You just want one," he elaborates, "One player who's making mistakes."

Clarkatroid - 18,000
James Akenhead - 18,600
Marc Goodwin - 29,000
John Tabatabai - 32,000
Tony Philips - 27,000
Karl Mahrenholz - 24,400
Chris Moorman - 21,600
JP Kelly - 14,000

Javed Abrahams has almost exactly twice as many chips as he did before, after doubling through a disgruntled Ariel Adda. Abrahams seems to have either bet or raised 5k on the Js 9d 9h flop, leaving himself not much more than another 5k behind, which he then called all in to a push from Adda.

Adda: Jd Td
Abrahams: Ks Kd

Turn: 2d
River: 5s

CHIPS!

Here are some assorted counts from the bowels of the Vic.

Praz (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=353) Bansi (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=353) - 13,000

Sam (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1429) Trickett (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1429) - 24,000

Dan (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=86) Carter (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=86) - 26,000

("No spectacular hands" Dan tells me)

JP - 15,000

Moorman - 20,000

Moorman just told me he stuck it in JP's eye, -"I got three streets of value out of him!"

Chris  raised it up with T-7 (sooted obv) from UTG as you do, JP flat called and Moorman liked the look of the 7-7-9 flop. He led, JP called. Ditto the turn card. Ditto the Ace river.

"What did he have!" I asked. "Pocket fives...No respect!"

That boosted Chris to 25k although he immediately bluffed off 5k the next hand - he told me proudly!

Dan Carter seems to be in good form today, despite having Jon Raab talking about him loudly just as it was all getting underway.  AWOP were filming him discussing the lineup of that table, and Carter overheard every word: "AND he's still so young he can't play in Vegas..." etc. etc.  eventually turning around and telling him that he could hear him, you know.

Anyway, he just won a chunky pot from Andreas Hoivold, having secured it with a bet which would have set Hoivold all in on the river, the board 5h Jh Qh 7s 4c.  Hoivold didn't like it, and folded, while Dan said something which sounded a bit like, "Good pass," which he then inexplicably followed with, "I was drawing."

Christopher Skinner busts pre dinner-break, shortstacked and all in on a promising 3d Qc 6d board with Qs 8s.  Unfortunately what promise there was quickly evaporated as he was called by Jerome O'Shea who held Ac Ahrt and promptly knocked him out.

Also out: Ben Grundy

Could have been out: Barny Boatman - he got it all in on the river with the board 7s 9d 4d 3s Qc against Abhishek Khaitan, shoving straight away for around 7k into an 11k pot.  With no move left but call, Khaitan opted out of it and gave the Hendon Mobster a little breathing room.

Definitely in (this season): vibrant pink, as modeled by Iwan Jones (left) and Panicos Ellinas:

With 3k in the pot by the 7c 6h Tc flop, Paul Jackson bet out another 1k. Richard Gryko, looking a bit suspicious, called, while Henryk Nowakowski, who'd tagged along to see a flop, passed.

Both remaining players proceeded to check down the 5d turn and the Kh river (although Gryko looked as though he REALLY wanted to bet the river), and they proceeded to showdown. "Ace high," said Jackson cheerfully, turning over Ac 3c for the missed flush draw. Gryko's Ad Td for a pair was good, and with that Jackson was moved over to Table Davood, where he now has a prime bouffant 'do viewing spot.

John Tabatabatabatabatabai (may have to nominate him for Ctrl V of the day for sheer awkwardness) has dropped down a little to a still very large 30k. He called 2.5k from Surinder Sunar on the river of an 8d Kc 5s 2d 2h board, but mucked when Sunar turned over Kd 7d for two pair.

I have to admit that I spent a little bit of dinner break overlap looking for hoodies online to rival John Tabatabai's, whose personal collection probably has more rhinestones on it than Dolly Parton.  I failed to find anything of real interest, except for a design-your-own site which kept me entertained for a while.  Here is my first effort:

Tabatabai, at his brown and featureless-est:

What he Could have if he hired me as his personal stylist:

Clearly refreshed after their 40 minutes with nothing to except eat dinner again or pump money into the slot machines, players have been wasting no time in getting their chips in the middle in various bids to either get a big stack or bust out before the last Tube.

Abhishek Khaitan got it in with a speculative 8c 8s on a Tc 7d 9c flop, but unfortunately for him Andreas Johnsson was looking down at 7c 7h and it was an easy call for him. Johnsson went on to fill up on the 4s turn and 4d river, and it's curtains for Khaitan.

-------------

Panicos Ellinas on the other hand has been having rather better a time of it, doubling up to 21k when Tony Phillips paid off his aces. Mr Phillips down to 28k from his earlier peak of 40k.

-------------

And mystery for Adam Clarkatroid and Martin Bader. Bader in the small blind bet out 3k on a 4s 2s Jh flop and Clark spent ages looking everywhere but at Bader or the table before making a puffy-outy-cheek-face and going all in for 10,625 total. Then it was Bader's turn to stare at things for a while, before eventually passing. Clark turned over the top-pair-tastic Jd but declined to show his other card.

He's his usual chirpy, bubbly self, although he has donned a rather strange piece of headgear today.

"People were always making fun of my scarf. Well now they can make fun of my hat!"

It's all to do with a blue and white dyeing attempt that went wrong.
But his secret is safe here.

I have to admit that I spent a little bit of dinner break overlap looking for hoodies online to rival John (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1073) Tabatabai (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1073)'s, whose personal collection probably has more rhinestones on it than Dolly Parton.  I failed to find anything of real interest, except for a design-your-own site which kept me entertained for a while.  Here is my first effort:

Tabatabai, at his brown and featureless-est:

Variance Junkey - One whose loose aggressive play causes their stack to experience wild fluctuations.

Dan Carter - prime example.

In the space of an orbit he managed to win one 20k pot and lose one 30k pot in quick succession.

The latter involved a tussle with Stu Rutter, Carter popping it up to 800 pre-flop, Rutter making it 2,500 only for Dan to now make it 5,600.

Rutter looked seriously at Dan before picking up the rest of his chips and pushing them over the line.

Dan looked at how much more it was to call....9.1k, how much was in the pot...11.7k and made the call with Ad Kd, only for Stu to showdown pocket Aces.

An Ace on the flop looked likely to end any resistance, though a single solitary diamond offered a chink of hope to Dan's suited big slick. His hopes were dashed on the blank turn though and he counted out the chips he now owed Stu.

"Still got 24k" he told me cheerily despite this set-back.

"Once he four bets me I know he has AA, KK, QQ or AK but the price is too good not to call I think."

This picture tells you who was on the right side of that 30k pot...

Only moments later though, Dan is back to his usual up-beat self, chatting about the hand with Stu, with Karl Mahrenholz perhaps listening in more carefully than he is letting on...

Here's when he was happier and sat next to Lars Larsen instead of Long Zhang...Phillips has not had a great couple of levels. Or half a level.  He’s dwindled below his starting stack having had something like 37,000 at the break… anyway, Long Zhang just took a few off him after calling his preflop re-raise (Zhang had raised to 1,200 in the cutoff and then called Phillips button reraise to 3,600).  They sort of switched off after that for a minute, during which time the board came out 8d 4s 6s 6d 9c.  Zhang bet out 3,500 on the river, which Phillips called, only to find the 9d 9s in his opponent’s hand.  Zhang now has the kind of oversized stack which makes all tournament players happy – 70k and rising!

A flurry of double ups, exits and just good old fashioned big pots as this tournament finally seems to be getting into the swing of things.

Rollercoaster Of The Day title goes to Mark Phillips, who first came to my attention as I strolled by to see him all in on a Ts Qs 6c flop, called by John (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1515) Eames (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1515). Eames was holding the drawtastic Ks Js but the Th blank on the turn and the 5d blank on the river meant that Phillips' 8c 8s took the pot, doubling him up to around 9k.

A few minutes later, I noticed a relatively large Wall Of Media (there aren't really many of us here, it was more a Hedge Of Media or Fence Of Media, but I digress) forming around Mr Phillips' table. The reason was not an excessively enormous pot in terms of chips but nevertheless a three-way, preflop all in.

John (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1515) Eames (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1515): A-4
Daniel Tafur: A-9
Mark Phillips: K-T

Board: J-6-7-9-K

Eames and Tafur hit the rail, and Phillips looked to be in decent shape.

But...

Disaster!

As I understand it, Phillips had become involved in a hand with Guy (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1867) Steel (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1867) and they had by some means or other made it as far as the turn of the 2c Jc 9h Qs board at which point Steel had possibly hovered some chips over the line or done something a little dubious that could have been interpreted as a bet, although he swore he hadn't meant to bet. It was eventually ruled that he could check, and at this point Phillips got his chips in. Steel called and turned over Qd 9c for two pair, Phillips turned over a weak Ad Tc for a gutshot draw, the Js on the river didn't change a thing, and Phillips was out.

Phillips was clearly most disgruntled and although Steel apologized and didn't seem to me as though he'd done anything controversial on purpose, Phillips left in less than excellent spirits.

Talal Shakerchi just doubled through courtesy of Praz Bansi, the button raiser who gave him a spin when his 650 was raised to 3,325 all in preflop.  He didn’t like the suit of Shakerchi’s Kc Qc, or the rank either considering he was spinning with the Tc 4c.  A King on the flop and the short stack’s double was confirmed, while a semi-penitent raised eyebrow and smile was all he got out of Praz.  Oh, and 3,325 chips.

With about 8k in the pot and the board reading 3s 9d 8s Ahrt, Mclovin bet out 4k, leaving himself 7k behind. Surinder Sunar in the cutoff, distracted a little by the ice cream that had appeared for the snacking enjoyment of players only :( but still taking a passing interest in the hand, dwelled up for a while, munching on a little pot of delicious creamy-looking vanilla, before folding. Mclovin's up to 19k.

Peter Wood is down to 13k while Gregory Howard is up to 18k, this reversal of fortunes owing to Wood's A-K being no good against Howard's pocket rockets on a king-high flop. Lucky Howard.

I have been waiting for a good time to post this excellent picture of Akenhead also making a weird face - it looks like at something Marc Goodwin is telling him - but both of them seem to be doing pretty well and I haven't personally witnessed any hands where either of them suffered unduly.  The closest I can manage is a recent pot where Akenhead called Tony Cascarino's preflop raise, and bet on the Kh 7h 2c flop, before checking down the potentially interesting 6h turn and less so 8d river and mucking when Cascarino showed Aspades Kc.

______________________________________________________________________________

Elsewhere Chris Moorman calls a preflop raise from Paul Dack on the button, bets a Th 3d Kc flop when it's checked to him, and then switches off when Dack calls as they both see the turn and river (5s 2h).  Then they both turn pocket Nines, and much hilarity ensues.

John Paul Kelly - 14k.

Not going so well for JP but he's still in it. A moment ago he disappeared to the bar, returning with a pint of beer almost as big as him.

"Look!" said a jubilant Moorman. "He has to get drunk just to make a continuation bet!"

"shhhhhhhhh!" admonished JP, folding as he saw his blind raised...and re-raised (by Chris Moorman of course.)

Moorman meanwhile was down to 25k from his peak of 32k or so, but that all changed as I watched several hands in succession, first that aforementioned hand where he re-popped to 3.8k withouot picking up a caller and then a hand where he raised a limp of 400 to 1,600 then continuation bet the flop for 2.2k, only for his opponent to lay down.

Back up to 30k...just like that.

Tablemate James Akenhead - 26,000.

The BIG Stacks

Long Zhang: 75k
Ben Vinson: 60k
Robin Keston: 63k
William Martin: 55k

Incidentally, it looks as though a lot of Long Zhang's chips came courtesy of Marc Goodwin, who has slipped down to 20k.

Gary Clarke, the little rascal, is still in and getting a little cocky.

I glance down at his stack and show my admiration for his chip garnering abilities.

"Nice Gary. Almost exactly 15,000!"

"Yep. My plan is to steal the blinds once a round until I'm heads up, then shift gears."

It's a privileged position we are in as updaters to be able to speak to some of the great poker minds of our generation give us wonderful insights like this.

I feel even luckier than this fella.

There's been plenty of Abramovici-on-Jelinek action to excite. The most dramatic encounter was a blind-on-blind confrontation that involved Ofir Abramovici betting out 2 or 3k on the turn of a Jh 6s 9s 8c board, only for Jelinek to go all in for 19k more. Abramovici considered it tantalizingly, before, slightly disappointingly for the updaters, passing.

John-Paul Kelly is...

Robin Keston did the damage, racing his A-K against JP's Queens, and spiking to send the youngster to the rail.

Meanwhile Chris continues his rampage, raising and re-raising his stack up to 45k or so now, not quite up with the chip leaders but well in the fray nonetheless.

During the current 15 minute break, I am joined by Gary Clarke, who tells me that his early dwindling has been curtailed thanks in part to a double through Marc Goodwin.  "I flopped a set.  That's the way to do it."  Now on a comfortable 32, he says in response to the question, "How's things, the tournament, your chip stack, how are you enjoying playing?"

 "Good."

So there you have it.  A last minute sneaker-in to what he describes as "Your English equivalent of the Irish Open," mysteriously, Clarke has quite a fanbase both in the UK and Ireland.  He just got a text asking him to come and play darts (in Dublin).  "That would be some throw," he admitted after a pause.

Sam Trickett was on around 18k but then took on a shorter stack with A-J. He was in trouble having run into A-K, but a Jd 3s 8s 3c 7c flop turned that disadvantage round into cold hard chips and boosted him up to 25k or so.

Dave Colclough looks shortish with only a few chips to his name and could be making a move very soon...

Steve Jelinek has around 27k to his name at this time...

Dan Carter? 20,400.

I didn't see the very start of the hand, but I got there just in time to see Knut Ekvardt (not a typo) go all in for 12,850 more than whatever the bet was before. After some eying up and squinting, Chris (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=69) Moorman (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=69) called, and it was a non-traditional coinflip for a rather massive pot.

Ekvardt: Ks 7c
Moorman: 6d 6c

Board: 2c 3s Aspades 4s 5c

Nope, not a split as everyone briefly thought but a scoop for the Moomin and a swift exit for Knut.

Just the Trickett!

Why the chirpy terrible pun title, when it looks from this picture like Sam Trickett might have lost his dog, had his tyres slashed, his wallet stolen and been told he can't go on holiday?  Because despite how it looks, this is actually the moment Trickett doubles up through Karl Mahrenholz to 40,000.  Trickett, under the gun, either limp-reraised Karl preflop, or raised small and then came over the top to the tune of 6k more.  Heads up, and Karl thought about it for a while before deciding that this didn't have to be what it looked like - he reraised him all in and can't have been too delighted when Trickett beat him into the pot.  As you do with Kd Kc.  Mahrenholz's Ac 9h missed the Aces and his stack was efficiently counted off and pretty much decimated at the end.  Staring around the pillar in the middle of the room, it appears Mahrenholz is now OUT and yet another table has broken, bringing our total remaining players for the day to just 44.

Some fine luck for William Martin propels him up the chip runway and into the tournament sky on 70k.

He raised to 600 from the button and then called a reraise to 2.1k from Steve Jelinek in the small blind. Onwards to the flop.

Flop: 7h 8s 8d

I must confess that my attention wandered elsewhere for a moment so I didn't see who bet and who called, but some chips went in. Then the turn.

Turn: 5s

Jelinek checked, and then called 2.5k from Martin.

River: Ad

Again, Jelinek checked, and this time Martin bet 5k. Jelinek dwelled up for some time, staring at the ceiling. Eventually he made a decision and threw the yellow 5k chip in. "I'm just calling for the value,"he said, and turned over Kc Kd. Martin, however, turned over 8h 9s to take down the sizeable pot.

Jelinek: 20k
Martin: 70k

Harsh Loss for Goodwin:

Marc Goodwin just busted in eyewatering fashion (not for the first time in one of these) to James Akenhead - having dwindled to the point where an preflop over-the-top shove was a definite option, Goodwin did it with the goods:  Kd Ks.  Akenhead thought for a while before making the call with Jh Js.

Flop: 9h 6s 7h
Turn: 2d  Raab was taping it all, the press drew close...
River: Jc

James Akenhead rakes in Goodwin's stack while his opponent wraps up his ipod looking world weary and exits.
"Oi!" says Marc in the direction of Akenhead who is staring at the table.
"Oi!  F**ing Jack on the river!" he reminds him with a wry smile and wanders off.

Just moments after knocking out Marc Goodwin (who looked as though he was leaving, but came back a minute later to play Chinese poker at the next table and tell anyone who'd listen about his bad beat), James Akenhead suffered a bit of a setback at the hands of salmon-shirted Long Zhang.

Zhang made it 2.8k from the hijack and Akenhead flat-called in the cutoff. A flop!

The flop: 4h 2s Th

Zhang bet out 6k but Akenhead made it 16k total. Zhang covered his entire face with his hands for a bit, and then called.

Turn: 5d

More face-covering, but ultimately a check each.

River: 6d

Now Zhang thought for a moment, and then very quietly announced all in, easily covering Akenhead. Face-clamping followed from Zhang, as Akenhead pondered whether to call all in. Eventually he decided against it, and left himself with 27k.

Trying For a Double Up This Level

or

At Least Getting All Their Chips In

1) Stuart "The Hat" Rutter.

He pushed all in on the turn of a 4d Jd 4c Td board, and although Sam Trickett squirmed and made faces for quite a long time, eventually he just passed.

2) Praz "Runs So Bad" Bansi

Down to just 14k, he sighed and attempted an open-shove from the button. Both Ben Vinson in the small blind and Richard Gryko in the big briefly in turn looked as though they might be interested but eventually laid it down and allowed a pleased-looking Praz to make off with their blinds.

An unlucky early night for Andreas Johnsson after he got his cowboys cracked (no awful Midnight Cowboy type scenarios implied, though Amy Winehouse is making my brain twist up all funny).

He raised from the cutoff only for Paul (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=326) Jackson (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=326) to reraise him from the button. When Johnsson pushed, Jackson merely sighed, "Oh dear," before making the smallish call.

Jackson: 4c 4h
Johnsson: Kh Kd

Board: 4s Qh 7s 2c Jh

Commiseratory sorts of sounds from Johnsson's tablemates as he heads for the door, or possibly the bar; either way, he is out.

Two Times!

The river runs hot for James (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=183) Akenhead (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=183) in the early part of level Eight... he's on the immediate left of Long Zhang who just keeps increasing his stack - except for these situations.  Zhang is raising to 2,400 preflop pretty regularly, but just as regularly Akenhead is flatting and seeing what happens.  Must be annoying, especially, say, if you check all the way down until the board comes 9h Jd Aspades Jh 3s and then check-call Akenhead's river 6,000 only to be shown 3c 3h.

Or when you are similarly cagey, raising pre, making one bet and then checking out a board of Aspades Td Ad 4h 8c, betting 2,400 on the river having in all probability slowplayed something fairly nice, getting raised to 10k and making the call, seeing Akenhead's 8s 8d for another rivered house.  The picture says it all.

Just to hark back a moment to the earlier dispute concerning Haircut Of The Day.

Davood Mehrmand's hair clearly has the edge. His hair is so well cultivated that it has grown an intelligence and life force of its own.

Tired of merely sitting atop Davood's head, it wants to break out and start off its own fledgling poker career. It plans to carve out a bankroll by playing small freerolls, perhaps supplementing its income by working as a wig or a stand in double for David Hasselhoff's chest hair for a while.

Then one day, after making a success as a poker player, it wants to have a small family of its very own and settle down.

So many plans, so little time!

First though it has to escape Davood, and it's proven harder than you'd think. Here it is making a break for freedom, unsuccessfully this time...

Fly Davood's hair, Fly!

The Continuing Saga of James the Akenhead

A story for children young and old.

When I wandered over, Akenhead was right back up to almost 60k after all of that stuff that Jen said, plus I saw him rake in a nice pot when he turned over A-T on the river of an ace-high board and Panicos Ellinas just mucked.

So, on around 60k, he found himself in a hand. I believe that Long Zhang had raised from the cutoff and Akenhead had called from the button, when David Lloyd pushed all in from the small blind for another 18k or so. Zhang passed but Akenhead counted out the call, and they were on their backs.

Lloyd: Jh 8h
Akenhead: Ahrt Qh
Zhang: "Oh no, I was ahead!"

Board: 3c Qs 4d 8c 7s

Thus we lose Mr David Lloyd, and James Akenhead has just pipped his neighbour Long Zhang to take the chip lead.

In the closing moments of Level Eight, Steve Jelinek busts in one of the biggest ...

Having earlier in the level doubled through with AA vs QQ aip, he had a pretty healthy 45k or so when he got involved with an early position raising Tony Cascarino.  It all went in preflop, Jelinek holding A-K off and Cascarino's Kc Kd making a set by the river for good measure.  The fact that Jelinek was eliminated says something about Cascarino's stack - he's got to be the last minute chip leader thanks to that boost of chips.

Cascarino may just have him by a whisker though with 93,000 at the break following level 8.

Moorman I hear you say Ms Winehouse?

Well, he currently has 50,000 though he's not 100% happy with his lot.

"I should have a lot more but I lost a race...standard" he tells me. "You can tell it's live because I lose races!"

Other counts:-

Dan Carter - 42k
Stu Rutter - 30k.

Stu has been amazed at how hard his table has been, packed with quality players.

"It's been so tough! Just as the small bit of value of the table gets busted, along come Surinder Sunar and Richard Gryko and Ben Vinson. Neverends!"

Iwan Jones is OUT, the victim of the legend that is Mclovin.

He openshoved from the small blind for 12,675 and his Ad Qc was well ahead when Mclovin called with Ac 9s, but oh, the cruelty.

Board: Ahrt 7c Th 6s 8c

And Gary is Mclovin' that, because he makes a straight and Jones bangs the table in frustration before wandering off.

The Clarkatroid had better charge up his rocket boosters because he's on just 11,675 and apparently open-shoving almost every other hand. No callers yet, but it's bound to happen if he carries on like that.

Praz Bansi Busts - after four limpers on his big blind, critically-stacked Praz made the move, all in preflop.  The first limper, utg Kim Wittendorf, reraised all in over the top and flipped Aspades Qc vs. Bansi's Th Jd.  6d 5d 2h flop, then a flushy Ad, but the 6s river sent him to the rail in 32nd place (of Day 1a, which means not much, actually).

No sooner than Mclovin had knocked out Iwan Jones, he lost all those chips back and more at the hands of sometime chip leader James Akenhead.

I just caught the very end of the hand, but it was enough to see Mclovin bet out 5.5k with the board reading 7h 5h 2s Jh 4s. Akenhead made it 12k and Mclovin appeared to make some brief mental calculations before calling -- and mucking when Akenhead turned over Jd Js for his one millionth set today (approximate set count only).

Around 20k had found its way into the pot by the river of the 3d Qs Ac 9d 4d board in a blind-on-blind encounter gone mad, and on that river, Javed Abrahams bet out 12k, leaving himself just 7k or so behind. Dan Carter, alternately perplexed and amused, disappeared into the tank for long enough for whole hands to happen on neighbouring tables, before eventually saying something to the effect that he thought he was beaten, and folding. An only slightly smug Abrahams showed Js Ts for nothing beyond a turned straight draw that came to nothing. Ouch.

Kuljinder Sidhu has had a rollercoaster of a final level, on the upswing at the moment after doubling through Tony Cascarino with an A-8 vs. A-5 blind vs. blind all-in preflop hand.  Prior to this, however, Moorman put him in a sticky situation after calling preflop on the button, calling his flop bet on the Ahrt Js 7c board, and then raising his 7,500 turn bet (on the Td) all in.  With under 10k remaining, Sidhu made a very unhappy-looking fold, and proceeded to walk the felt tightrope for about 20 minutes prior to doubling.

Jeff Duvall has been the only one to seriously dent James Akenhead's stack in the last two hours.  He got a full double up from his young neighbour, raising his stack over the very-healthy 80k mark and dropping Akenhead to 40k.  I am not entirely sure about the details but one of them flopped a flush draw, one had a made hand and it all went in on the flop.

Chris (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=69) Moorman (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=69) - 80k.

Up and down all day this boy.

"Whose eye did you stick it in now then Chris?"

"I stuck it in Praz's eye a little bit. He raised, there was a flat call and I squeezed with A-2 (It was probably good anyway!) They both folded and I flashed them the deuce. I don't think he was too happy but I'll tell him later what I had!"

Meanwhile a series of "Ooooohs!" and "Aaaaaaahs!" was heard emanating from table Akenhead / Zhang where Zhang and Mike (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=287) Ellis (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=287) where both staring at a board of T-6-T-Q-K.

The reason for the dramatic cries became apparent as Zhang had K-K in front of him , having watched his hand get drawn out on the turn by Mike (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=287) Ellis (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=287)' Q-Q, only for Zhang to re-take the lead on the King river.

"That sums up poker in one hand!" someone at the table was heard observing.

So last year's champion Mike (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=287) Ellis (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=287) is a late casualty of the day whilst Zhang's sun is rising, up to 80k or so again.

Also going well with 80k or so is Jeff Duval...

Dan (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=86) Carter (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=86) - he's nothing if not brutally honest.  "Did you see the hand I just got pwned in?" he asked, before cheerfully relating a blind on blind hand against Javed (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1258) Abrahams (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1258).  Abrahams limped, Carter raised with his Qs 9c; call.
Flop: A-Q-4.  This was checked.
Turn: 9  This brought a second diamond and two pair for Carter.  Abrahams check-raised him (2k to 6k), however, and Carter opted to flat call.
River: 3d  Now Abrahams bet out 12k, and, "although usually I just call in these situations, I actually folded.  And he showed me T-J for a turned straight draw!"

That well-timed bluff has left Mr. Carter with around 34k, but he's still cheerful, bless.

Just to hark back a moment to the earlier dispute concerning Haircut Of The Day.

Davood (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=124) Mehrmand (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=124)'s hair clearly has the edge.

Iwan Jones is having a very bad day. Having exited the main event and gone straight over to the next table (Table Goodwin Plays Chinese Poker, where quite a field are battling it out for supremacy), he's still getting unlucky. "Fucking hell, can't I just win once?"

Meanwhile Adam Clark has upped and left after shoving his Td Ts into the Jc Jd of Tim Flanders, the 9c 2s Qs 5d Qc board of little use to him.

"There were only 15 minutes left," he justified cheerfully to a buddy at the rail, "I just thought, fuck it..."

Keep Your Hair On Davood!

While Davood's barnet plots escape from the cranium of one of the wackiest players on the circuit, its owner Davood's fortunes have not been going too well.

Seeing a flop of Ad Kd Jd, his opponent bet out 2,000. Davood with only 11k back or so ummed and ahhhed and interrogated the player.

"You have some of that? You probably have a ROYAL FLUSH!" spat Davood as he stared menacingly into the eyes of his foe.

"Ha! I don't have a royal but I've got a lot of that" retorted his nemesis, wiping spittle from his glasses but refusing to wither under the feral glance of Mehrmand.

Eventually after much staring and posturing, Davood folded and was shown 5s 3c for his troubles.

"Did you say you had a lot of that!" laughed someone at the table.

"Well....I'm colourblind!"

Davood remained quiet, though supersonic strains could be heard by nearby dogs as the simmering rage beneath the surface threatened to burst out.

What's Moorman been up to?

Yes he's been putting things into eyes again. This time it was Kuljinder Sidhu who was the man to suffer.

After watching Chris raise to 2.8k from early position he shoved all-in for about another 4k, the big blind called and Chris also called.

The flop fell Jh Qs 3d.

Chris check, BB check.

TURN: 9h

Chris 6k, BB call.

RIVER: 9d

At this point Sidhu must have been leaping up and down having hit rivered trips with 9-8, but when Chris 13k river bet wasn't called, he showed Ks Ts much to Sidhu's disgust and another big pot was raked in by the Moomin.

I told you to watch out for him!

"He's hitting everything!" said Tony 'I've just won a GUKPT and I'm probably chip leader in the Grand Final' Cascarino.

"And he has ridiculous hair" said Davood Mehrmand.

Meanwhile Chris just swept up a pot that will have moved him close to the chip lead. MBSFN!

And that about wraps things up for the day with around 22 or 23 players left in contention. We'll receive official confirmation of the exact counts from Jon Raab shortly but it looks like Chris (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=69) Moorman (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=69) is the chip leader with over 100k.

Wow, what an exciting day with most of the day's entrants licking their wounds on the rail while a select few remain poised for the final run-in.

We'll put up those counts when we have them but for now from myself, Ms Mason and Ms Immanuel it's ta-ta. Thanks for following and for the comments and requests. It keeps us sane!

Join us tomorrow for Day 1b which if today was anything to go by, should be a cracker.
