Title: BlueSq.com GUKPT Brighton: Day 1a
Post by: NoflopsHomer on January 14, 2009, 06:17:03 PM
Its a new dawn, its a new day....but before I go all Nina Simone on you, welcome to the first GUKPT of 2009 in freezing cold Brighton, but a place where hotels are super cheap at this time of year. :)

It was a long trek down from Leeds today for me, not helped by the fact that I had to sit next a small annoying child who decided he was going to poke me every few seconds while I was reading and then pull out my earphones when I was listening to music. His parents sat opposite me, smiling and laughing at the clear hilarity he was causing, until the child decided to take note of recent political activists and took off his shoe and threw it at his dad from point blank range. Suddenly, everything wasn't so funny for them, but at least this boy had finally made me laugh.

Anyway, the tournament won by Julian (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) Thew (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=225) last year and Dave (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=115) Smith (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=115) the year before, will start tomorrow from 2pm, so leave your requests here, but remember I'll doing this update solo so it will take longer than usual for me to respond to everything.

Finally, blondepoker is now on Twitter @ http://twitter.com/blondepoker so if you're on there, please follow us for links to news stories, cardroom promotions and live updates.

Btw, this is the coolest guitar work I've ever seen.

Did it hit him in the 'bouche'?

Just arrived. Not sure how many people are playing today yet, will check.

Last night I got to watch the bingo-y £100r PLO as Nick Gibson and Duba most have put in about £700 or £800 each...meanwhile Marc Goodwin got the no rebuy table, finished the end of the rebuy period with a 14k stack, chip leader of his table (starting stack 3k), which was of course below average when they went to the freezeout stage..I have no idea who ended up winning though.

There's about 160 players or so in total at the moment.

"There's a lot more young players than last year," said John (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1515) Eames (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1515). "It's probably going to be a lot tougher too."

Not many players around atm but spotted so far:

Albert (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1251) Sapiano (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1251)
Tony (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=772) Cascarino (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=772)
Dave Clarke
Stuart (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=420) Nash (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=420)

rofl @ this. obv turn bk up at casino @ like 5am and get the most degen game ever going.

1/2 table behind us grinding away, everytime they look back theres 6 of us getting it in for 2-300 each.

fkin quality.  trigg the nit of the year in the final hand. every1 ships it in dark, he refuses and wants to look first and finds A7red which holds for £1.1K.  [  ] justice was served.

No, I meant in terms of surroundings. A lot of people say it's not the nicest of places, and I was wondering if things had improved over the last year, a la Luton.

Hmmm, it's going to be hard for me to grab a sight over the next few days. I don't mind Brighton, I certainly prefer it to Luton, but neither are really my cup of tea.

Incidentally, still no nearer to starting, blessed with a lot of DTD tournaments recently, I've forgotten how slow sometimes these take to start.

Errr, it's not great. The tournament area is still seperated out into two areas making it awkward, but there's going to be about 100 runners today so I suspect one area should be broken quickly making everyhing easier. It's not the biggest casino tbh, but the way they've set it out this year is remarkable easier than Year 1 where they had everyone stuck in the middle and it was a nightmare.

Not a great start for Nick Gibson, he raises a 1,000 bet on the river of a Q-5-4-6-8 board to 3,500 and is duly called. Nick flips 5-5 for a flopped set but his opponent's average hand, Q-7 has rivered a straight to become the best and Gibson is already down half his stack.

Seems like an odd raise. I guess Nick thought his opponent was a bit of a station, probably didn't have the straight and could call on that board with just top pair.

I missed the action but Dave Colclough filled me in with the details that Stefan John Haffner is our first exit, getting it all-in on the river of a 4-6-8-6-9 board with 9-9 but running into Trinh Lam's 6-6 for a particularly nasty cooler. Especially when you've come all the way across from Norway...

Yes, after that hand Nick went to cool down as evidenced by this photo (that's his newspaper). Also note the official printed ID cards that all players get now which makes my job easier. :)

Also here is Kevin O'Leary and Richard Kellett.

For those wondering what Kevin is watching while he's not folding his hand every other minute...it's the second season of Dexter. He better not spoil it for me, I've only just started watching that season. >:(

another winner from notts this year? if the last 2 are anything to go by then yes.

obv i want Tony (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1339) Phillips (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1339) to win,but would love to see Dave (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=115) Smith (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=115) do well again if he makes the trip.
he has not been well and had a stay in hospital before christmas,so best wishes to him from me.

good luck also to Kevin (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=235) O'Leary (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=235),all the hitsquad boys, julian and Sam (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1429) Trickett (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1429),trigg and leknave

Tony Phillips has had a good start, I think he has about 17k. Looks like he has benefit from Albert Sapiano's aggressive calling style as the latter is down to about 3k.

Priyan De Mel raises to 200 after a limper from the button. Andy Greekfish reraises to 1,000 from the small blind. Priyan folds Ad Td face up, Greekfish gives a load of verbals before showing Kd Kh, or King of Red, King of Blue for Tikay. He then shouts, "I soooo knew I was getting paid if he had a big hand!!!!!!"

Interesting hand for Neil Blatchley, he bets 600 on a Tc 9d 5d and is facing a raise to 2,600. Clearly with a difficult decision, his opponent then pushes the rest of his stack in on top of the 2,000 raise telling Blatchley he can't force him out of the pot. So it now seems clear he's up against a drawing hand.

But Blatchley decides to give it up and gets show the Kd Jd for his trouble.

Albert Sapiano is OUT. Did he call or was he pushed?

Man down!

I missed the action but Dave (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=95) Colclough (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=95) filled me in with the details that Stefan John Haffner is our first exit, getting it all-in on the river of a 4-6-8-6-9 board with 9-9 but running into Trinh Lam's 6-6 for a particularly nasty cooler. Especially when you've come all the way across from Norway...

Ouch..

Apparently he's a Brighton local so it's not so bad.

Richard Kellett doubles up his short stack to about 4,600 just before the break with Jd Jh against Pippa Flanders' Tc Ts.

Sam Trickett, "I was loving playing the 6-handed, I won 2k without showing a hand, then the table became full ring and I've done all my chips, I should have passed Jacks in this one hand but paid off a turn bet..."

Is this him next to Neil Blatchley?

If so, he just lost a small pot on a 7-7-5-4-A board, his opponent showed A-3 on the river, he showed 5d and mucked.

Michael Greco and Ryan Fronda limp into a pot against the big blind.

Aspades 7h 9d

Checked to Greco who bets 400, Fronda quickly calls and the big blind folds.

5c

Greco now bets 1,000. Fronda gives him a cold stares and thinks for a minute, and just as think he's going to cause some action or at least allow us to see a river, he folds.

Tony Cascarino is out, pushing with Tc Td on an 8s 7s 3s flop but ran into Michael Moore's Qs 4s for the flopped flush.

James Fuller has knocked out Peter Wood.

Wood check/raised all-in on a Kh 3h 7d and Fuller called, as you would with 7h 6h. Wood showed Ahrt 2h and began to beg the dealer, "One time dealer, ace or heart, one time please? I knew he had nothing..."

2c

"Ace, two or heart. Come on?"

6s

Fuller's two pair is good. Peter is now firewood.

Bit of a nasty one for Lam Trinh. Neil Fox had limped and the small blind made up.

Kh Qh Th

Trinh bets 500, Fox calls, the small blind passes.

4c

Trinh bets 1,500. Fox calls again after some thought.

8s

And now Trinh quickly bets 3,000. Fox calls a third time. Trinh turns over 8h 5h for a flopped flush, Fox turns over 9h 7h for the marginally higher flush...

Could Fox have raised at any point here?

On a 5s Th 2h 6s board, Willie Tann sees his bet reraised all-in by Richard Kellett to the turn of 7,825 more. Tann really looks like he wants to make a hero call but relents and folds.

Time to put his face on milk cartons people. Or is he just paying tribute to the legend that was Vinnie Vinh's chair. I may get an interview with the chair during the break...

Its not difficult to see that James has spent the last two weeks in the Bahamas - what a tan lol

Good news for all you Ian Frazer fans.

Frazer check/calls a bet on the 7d Tc 8c flop of 1,500 before calling another 2,000 on the 4h turn before the river Ts went check-check. His opponent, Matt Perrins showed a counterfeited two pair, 8d 7h which had been rivered by the Queens belonging to Frzazer.

On the table next door, Ryan Fronda gets a cheeky value bet on the river of a 8d 4h 4c 9d 6d. On the end he bets 1,000 which is called and turns over 6h 5h which is good.

Richard Kellett claims another scalp.

Willie Tann raises on the cutoff to 4,100 with 3,000 behind. Kellett sets him in from the button. Tann calls with 4d 4s, Kellett shows 9c 9s and the board brings no surprises.

Fuad Serhan also gone. A-K vs the Tens of Simon Randall.

Glenn Martin has trebled up. He was all-in preflop against Daniel Toffel and Jim Reid.

Both checked the 7c Aspades Qd flop before Reid bet 3,800 on the 7h turn after Toffel had checked. The latter made the call though and checked the river Td to Reid who thought long and hard before checking.

"Have you got a seven Jim?" said Martin.

"Nope," replied Reid.

"Well, I guess I've won then," came the short stack's assumption as he turned over Ac Qs. Toffel then turned over Ad Th for the side pot when Reid mucked.

The last hand before the break sees a sparring match between Ian Frazer and a short-stacked Sam Trickett, the latter pushing on the turn of a Jd 6s 9d 9s. Frazer thinks long and hard but folds.

60 left. 3 levels to go.

Stuart Nash and Simon Randall are out.

Ian Frazer and Sam Trickett continue to spar. Trickett raises to 1,600 and Frazer calls in the big blind.

3c 7c 4h

Frazer checks, Trickett bets 2,300. Frazer calls.

Kh

Frazer checks again, Trickett bets 3,200, Frazer quickly announces all-in, Trickett instantly folds.

Frazer lost most of his stack soon after though, running Qd Qs into Keir Ratcliff's Ahrt Aspades for what was probably a 40k pot after they got it all-in preflop and the board ran out 8d 7s Tc 3s Kd.

Mickey Wernick has trebled up and Dave Barnes has been eliminated as Tony Adderley raised preflop, Barnes and Wernick both pushed their short stacks in and Adderley called the small additional amount.

Barnes: Ac Jd

Wernick: Ad Qh

Adderley ("Oh dear"): Qc Jc

A 3c 9d 6d 5s 3h board helped no-one to almost treble the Worm up.

Richard (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2835) Kellett (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2835) is out. First he lost a huge pot with Ac Js vs the 8c 8d of Dinh Doat Le for around 40,000 after all the money went in on the turn of a 8d Ad 3c 7s Kd board.

A couple of hands later he pushed blind for about 7.3k from UTG. Le called behind him and everyone else folded.

Le turned over Ad Qc

Kellet, "I haven't looked!" turns over 3s....2d. "Well I'm only a 60/40..."

Of course as soon as you say that, the flop comes out Jh Tc Kd and Kellett is drawing to runner-runner tie...which invariably doesn't come with a 5h turn and 8s river instead.

Tony (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1339) Phillips (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=1339) -- 30k

I can't see Adam Vinson though, I think he's out.

Rory Campbell, Ramsey Ajram and Marc Goodwin. The former two are both doing rather well and are amongst the chip leaders. (I'm sure Campbell looks like Kris Kuykendall who finalled Monte Carlo)

Not so good for the Hitsquadders. None of the three have managed to amass a big stack so far today.

Andy Greekfish who has already told everyone how unlucky he is today at races, (to be fair to him I've seen him lose two sizeable pots with coinflips) gets it all-in against Steve Littlejohn 2d 2c vs Ac Ks. Immediately Littlejohn catches best on the 4d Aspades 6s 5c 8s board.

"Just can't win a race..."

Therefore he's now OUT.

Also gone, Sunny Chattha, Sam Trickett and James Akenhead. All are now aboard the 11pm train to Bustoville.

Mike Ellis -- 42k

Jon Omara has knocked out Jake Cody (Wasn't Cody the bloke from Final Fight?) with A-K vs A-J all-in preflop.

I'm afraid that's going to count as a partial bok. Martyn Frey just exited with Q-Q vs A-T and didn't look too happy.

Paul Lammas is on about 30k, sitting next to the guy who cannot lose a single TV table ever.

Jack Powell has managed a nice act of binkage.

After Steve Littlejohn led out for 2k on a 3h 3s Jh, Powell decided to just flat-call. The Kh appeared on the turn and Littlejohn checked, Powell bet 5k and Littlejohn moved in, after counting his chips and seeing the size of the pot Powell made the call for most of his stack with Ahrt Qc, needing an Ace, Ten or heart to win against Littlejohn's Kc Jc. The river was in fact two of the three, coming the Th to make flush and straight, eliminating Littlejohn.

More chips for Jack Powell, Glenn Martin moved all-in for 9.2k UTG with Ahrt KD and Powell made the call from the big blind with 7h 7s. The flip favoured the big stack coming 3d 5c 6s Jh 6d.

39 left.

Odd side point. There's no out and out chip leader really at the moment. There's kind of a threeway tie between Jack Powell, Jon Omara and Bernard Litman, who all have about 55k at the moment.

Michael Moore goes out with the last hand before the final break. Priyan De Mel asks him why he wants to play such a big flop when Moore makes a big push pre, Priyan calls with Ahrt Kd, Moore shows Ks Kh.

Priyan, "So that's why you wanted to play a big pot."

Ts 3s 9c 2c Ad...

"YEEEEEEEEESSS" shouts Priyan before apologising to Moore for being so loud. It was a big pot though, that puts De Mel among the chip leaders.

(Please feel free to create your own hilarious 'Less is Moore' type headlines about the above story, I really need the toilet and do not have time at the moment)

Players on a short break.

Say "Hi from Oz" to them +Gibbo, DC, Parker, The Hitsqad, Jerome, Mark Mcluskey, Ryan, and anyone who owes me money.
lol

i think your secret weapon is one of the chip leaders....mbn to be in Oz

Ramsey Ajram is the chip leader with almost 80k and is coincidentally sitting next to Tony Phillips.

Dominic Kay is out, he pushed on a K-8-6 board with A-8 but got called by Daniel Toffel's A-K. No snowman spikage.

Mickey Wernick doubles up through Pippa Flanders.

With the board reading 7s 7h 8h Aspades Ks, Wernick moved in for his last few thousand into a largish pot. Pippa Flanders eventually made the call with Aspades Jc, Wernick turned over Ahrt 8c for the dead man's hand just pipping her with a slightly better two pair to push him over the 20k mark.

Stephen Eames is out, Kh Th in to Dinh Doat Le's Ahrt Qc.

Cuong (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2662) Tran (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=2662) doubled through Jim (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=599) Reid (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=599), Jim had raised preflop to 3,600. Tran made it 10k from the small blind and Jim set him. Tran didn't really have enough to pass and called with Ks Qh. Reid showed Aspades Jc.

Ahrt 9h 3h 6h Td

Gavin Ball is out. Threes into Bernard (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=48) Litman (http://www.blondepoker.com/blondepedia/blondepedia_view_player.php?player_id=48)'s Tens.

Kjetil Naess has knocked out Pete Charalambous with A-3 vs Q-2. No help for either player.

Rory Campbell is OUT. No details, I'm afraid.

Ian 'The Raiser' Frazer just cut himself. He put Pippa Flanders all-in on a J-6-5 flop with 9-9 but she made the call with K-J which held to double. Frazer as a result is down to about 35k, Flanders P, as oppposed to Flanders T, is up to perhaps about 40k.

Jim Reid has gone.

I'm off to get some sleep. Lovely delicious sleep.

Day 1b will start tomorrow from 2pm, where we're expecting around 140 - 150 more players for this event. I'll be here from just before 2pm.
