Hi all.

Just caught an early hand. DC, very short stacked and on the big blind, has just won an extra few thousand. Crucial for him at this stage.

N Hussain limped under the gun. The small blind called. DC checked.

After checking a board of:

the river came  8d

small blind and DC checked again. N Hussain bet 3k.

DC dwelled before calling the 3k and leaving himself with 2k.

DC turns over  Ts 3h.

N Hussain shows a stonecold bluff  As 7c

DC creeping up gradually. Go the Colclough!!!

It appears that Big Shot Ian Fraser is a no-show with his short stack.  It's just not enough chips, just not enough money yatta yatta.  Apparently there was a big all-in yesterday (50k or so) with a similar reason behind it, "I don't want to come back tomorrow with x-few chips..."  Thanks to Junior for explaining the oddly empty seat.

Dave Clark just pushed all-in after Alan Davies had raised to 4.6k.

El Blondie gets all-in again (as expected), pushing in late position for the full 12k.  Luke Patten called from the small blind, and original raiser D. Sami goes into the tank before passing what he said was a big pair ("Right" says Tikay, who's turned up in 425 gear).  Dave shows  As Kc, and says, "nice hand" as Luke shows  Ac Kh.  So, with a raggy non-suit-threatening flop, no double but a bit of a raise absorbed.

On DC's table the following hand unfolded.

Harpit Gurnan flatcalls in earlyish position. Luke Patten raises to 6k from the button. Harpit calls.

The flop comes  5d Jd 6s

Harpit bets 6k. Patten reraises 20k.

Harpit thinks and thinks and thinks...

and thinks before passing.

He shows the  Jc.

Patten mucks without showing and Harpit is left to wonder if he folded the best hand.

Returning chip leader Alan Mclean (whom Greg describes as a pain in the neck, as he's been re-raising raisers with a vengeance) has just lost a near 150k pot to Anthony Nicholls (one of his re-raise targets) as he got it all-in preflop with pocket Nines against Anthony's AQ.

After some preflop action with Alan Davies, the flop comes:

Womble moves all-in from the small blind for 8.3k. Alan Davies quickly calls.

Johnathan Creek Alan Davies shows  As 8c, Womble casually flips over Ad Ah.

Womble survives and is back in business.

Anthony Nicholls is chip leader with 170k.

Most of his chips were prised  ::) away from Alan McLean.

And ANOTHER big pot for Dave - this time holding  5s 5h on a board which had not only a third  5d on it, but held a  Kd which kept his opponent calling with  Ks 5c all the way.  Jonathan Raab says "He's doubled, no, trebled, no, MORE than trebled since it started!"  His enthusiasm is infectious; I'm totally rooting for a big blonde comeback.

Another victim of Anthony Nicholls, Greg saw him limp into a pot ("not an unusual occurrence") and found  Ah 7h in the small blind.  He made it up, the bb checked, and the flop came A 2 Q.
This looked pretty good to Greg, who bet out 4k into a 5k pot, but he got raised by limper Anthony, whom he reasoned was unlikely to have a bigger Ace.  Therefore it all went in, and Anthony showed  Ac Jd, taking him out. 

"He's got big chips, he's pushing them around a bit.  Although he's raised, I think I've got the best hand, it's that simple." 

Anthony Nicholls: 208,000!  That certainly is big chips.

Shorcott, leaving DC as the only hat-wearer in the final four tables.  Fascinating tidbits, eh?  Micky now has about 100,000.  He'd raised in the small blind, and the young guy made a (big) move all-in.  Micky called "straight away" according to Mr. Hill with  2s 2h!  R. Shorcott held  Jh 9d and the deuces held. 

Blue Square Qualifier v Blue Square Qualifier hand has just occured.

Short-stacked Harprit Gurnam OUT -

He moved it in with  Kc Qc, and found raiser Luke Patten on  As Js.  The board came (non-suited) A 5 10 K 4 and by the turn it was all looking a bit like curtains.  And with that exit, they're down to three tables. 

We're now down to 3 tables after El Blondie's table split.

He's now sitting to Barney Boatman's left.

Two of the best players here are now in very close vacinity.

... but Jen and I reckon Dave and Barney are pretty good too.  :D

The two biggest names here are Darren Grosvenor and Anthony Nicholls.

We were wondering here (well, Tikay was posing one of his guessing game questions):  What time do y'all reckon the final table (nine-handed) will start?  I said 7:30 and they all laughed.

Anthony Nicholls is still chip leader.

He said he was after the win, not the money.

I asked him to give me the dosh when he won then.

Here's Womble checking out his hand.  Now that Howard Plant's arrived on his table it's a bit louder (although the Magician is pretty short, things like "I could be back in bed in an hour" are flying around).  There's also a bit of controversy as two stray 1,000 chips find their way into contention.  You'd think people nearing a final would keep a tight rein on their precious chips, but oh no.

Kevin Zarandi doubles up at Micky's expense now - he pushed with  Ah Kc and Micky's  8c 8h ended up losing him about 20,000 when the king came on the flop.

Average stack 58.9k.

Blinds are now 1k and 2k.

Dave Clark's preflop raise of 12k was just reraised by M Alden for another 20k.

Dave Colclough seemed to consider joining in the party, but he folded.

Dave Clark also mucked and Alden took the pot there and then.

15 minutes til the chip-counting opportunity provided by the break (oh goody!)  So you'll get some accuracy to go with the Stories Of the Moment (Anthony Nicholls has lots; Dave Colclough's stack multiplies seemingly exponentially; Micky Wernick doing well; Howard Plant, Tim Falla, Steve Wilsdon are short stacks etc.)

DC just informed me that he folded AK because he didn't know too much out M Alden, the reraiser.

Kevin Zarandi's streak continues as he doubles up off Alan Mclean in the following manner -

Alan re-raised Micky Wernick's under the gun raise to 26k, which Kevin just flat called on the button, despite the fact that that left him with just 15k behind.  That was enough of the hand for Micky, and he passed.  The flop came  Ac Qc 7d.  Check, check (curiouser and curiouser, I thought).  Then the blank-looking turn ( 9s) saw Alan put Kevin all in with his  Jd Js, and Kevin Zarandi call with his  Ks Kd!  The river was the  Tc and that's another double up for Kevin.

Current chip leader, Anthony Nicholls, has 252.5k.

I like this chap. He stacks his chips in nice easy-to-count piles.

Permanent short stack Howard Plant moved in in early position for 9,000.  It folded round (after some serious dwelling on the part of Dave Clark) to Dave, who re-raised all-in for 19,500.  So they were heads up with Dave's  8h 8c against Howard's  Ks Kh.  The board came  Ts 3d 9s 6c Ah, at which point Womble said, "Say thank you to Mr. Colclough - I was calling with my 9 10 if he didn't do that."

Very unlikely.

Alan Mclean bullies on the button with a 14k raise. Simon Millington in the small blind moves all in for another 50k. Alan chucks them quickly without any pomp or circumstance.

Alan now has precisely 223k. I know this because he told me "to save me from looking".

19 players left after the sudden demise of Dave Colclough, who having come back as quite definitely the shortest stack, outlasted a whole table in a chip collecting rush.  Now he's off to take some money off some students (or vice versa)...

With multiple interest in a preflop pot, Mahmoud Rauf committed the last of his chips, only to be called by Womble, Darren Grosvenor and Barny Boatman.  It was clear the checked-down board of  3c 2c Ks Tc 6s was not to his liking as he stood up, mucking his hand.  The pot went in the end to Barny with his  Kd 4c, and we have lost Mahmoud in 14th place.

Traynor doubles up with 8-5 on an 8-10-5 flop.

Alan McLean provided the action with K-T.

Turn and river provided no extra help.

It's close to bubble, just as slow as bubble proper... 13 players remaining.  But the main reason for the quietness is the fact that we three musketeers have decamped to a table right by the Final Table, behind a little bluesq promotional screenlet, where we can remain.  The £100 rebuy event is just about to start, and we were somewhat in the way, being positioned on one of the empty tables.  Well, it's not empty any more...

Womble re-raised Darren Grosvenor's 28k by about that again and got a reluctant call for his  Ad Ks from Darren's  Ac Qh.

Personally I would say no it does not affect it. There have been many many deals like that this year and in no cases has it affected the points.  In no way does it affect the competitiveness.  Its more of a saver. If anyone in authority decides it means minimum points, it will have to apply to all those previous tournaments and will devalue and make a mockery of the whole ranking system. I will fight the corner if it comes to it.

Ironside, I see it more of a redistrbution of the prize money than a deal. The ranking points are only for the top nine places and the places that benefit from the saver are all outside this.

i know most events have savers like this

but it effect the finishing spots as people are more likely to gamble to aquire chips if there is a saver in place which means that the bigger stacks cant steal as much and the shorter stacks are more likely to double up
any saver effects the way the event finishes but i think it would be wrong to freeze the points

when i asked about this earlier in year any savers done before the final table do not effect ranking points
if saver/deal is done on final table points are frozen

Personnally I think it definately affects the outcome of any tournament, short stacks are far more willing to gamble if they know they will get their money back or more.

The situation with deals and savers is almost impossible to police, I think they allot the points to who has the most chips, etc, ect.

It's pretty much ground to a halt here, with no stacks so short their all-in moves are imminent. 

As far as showdowns, there's been a Barny vs. Dave Clark one, on a  5h 4c Ah 6s 5c board.  It had all quietly been checked, and then Barny bet out 20k from the big blind on the river.  Dave eventually called with  9s 9c, but Barny had been sitting on  Ac Qd and congratulated him for having checked it twice previously...  That puts Dave on one of the shorter stacks, but at 80,000 he's not desperate.  The blinds are 4,000 - 8,000, however, with a rise to 5,000 - 10,000 in ten minutes.

what is clear is that for next year the ranking rules need to more clearly define what kind of deal affects the points and what does not. The essence of the rankings is about continued competitiveness right to the end. This certainly makes no difference at all from the point at which they get down to the last nine.

The final table shortest stack found an Ace, and went for it.   Ac 8c to be precise, which found an over the top all-in from Darren Grosvenor with his  Js Jc.  They spiked the  Jh but there was never a dangerous card for him, and our first final table casualty has occurred.  Down to 8, and the short stacks are now Dave Barnes and then Ian Woodley. 

The blinds are 5,000 - 10,000 so there's quite a bit there to steal.  Back to tableside (where are the announcements Dani? :)    )

On a flop of  4h 7c Jh he was heads up against Paul Traynor, and checked, raising all in to Paul's 45k bet.  A great big pause, before Paul folded, showing the  Js.  Barny says, "I promise you you've made a good pass - but it was close."

Anthony Nicholls raises 30k. Barney, on the button reraises 65k and Anthony passes.

Barney's at it again!

It was battle of the blinds with Dave Barnes (small blind) holding Kc Th and Barney Boatman playing Jh 3h.

All the money went in on the turn, Barnes being the lower of the two stacks.

The board was:

Things looked bleak for Barnes until the dealer popped out the Qh on the river to give Barnes the nut straight.

Barney's face went slightly sour...

Luke Patten wins a rather needed pot, after raising preflop and getting a call from Dave Barnes.  When it was checked to him he went all-in for around 80,000, which was about the size of the pot.  Dave passed and Luke now has a bit of breathing space - although not much; with the blinds at 6k - 12k 100,000 doesn't look as much as it did three hours ago.

Pascal claims that there is only 1 French player left in the comp.

Tikay informs him that there are NO French players remaining.

Pascal proves us all wrong by revealing the 10 percent he has with Barney.

10 percent of £66,000 isn't the worst of cuts.

Barny seems to have woken up now and looks more relaxed than the other final tablists.  It could just be because he's sitting a bit slouchy.  But for the second time in about 20 minutes he's come over the top of a preflop raiser ALL-IN (no half measures) pushing him off a 100k pot.  His two pushoffs have been Stephen Wilsdon and just now Dave Barnes.  The latter hand was especially interesting considering all the talk while the call was being considered and rejected.  Dave folded showing the  As, and gave Barny the old, "show the bluff, it's good for the game" line, getting to see the  Kd! 

It will all be clear on the DVD which is the purpose of all this filming (a little more low key and less hassle-y than the usual film set type final, how relaxing).  Oh the wonder of hole card cameras.

Luke Patten OUT in 7th

Luke moved in on the cutoff with  As  6h and found a caller (well, a re-raise-all-inner) in Darren Grosvenor, whose  Kh Th hit two pairs over the course of the board's emergence.  It was a case of two shortish stacks combining after a battle so that one of them had a playable stack, and it was Darren.  Luke wins £5,800.

Seconds later (you can just see Rhowena's eyes light up) another HUGE pot developed - snoopy has the details...

The game has slowed to a crawl here. Nobody seems `to want to take control of the table. Methinks it will burst into life soon, when we least expect it. 

Big hand news now though - Anthony limps utg, small blind Paul Traynor calls, and big blind Darren Grosvenor raises 60k.  Anthony immediately re-raises to 150k and gets a fold from Paul and an all-in from Darren.  Quick as a flash - "I call."  He shows  Kh Kd.  Darren shows  Ah Kc.
The flop:  9d Td Jh.  Anthony says to Barny: "You passed a pair of Aces, yeah?"
Turn:  As
River:  9s

And that's the beginning of the end for Anthony Nicholls, as snoopy will inform you.

Some final table action. It's all very serious. Well, I guess there's a small matter of a few bucks involved now.

Flop The Nuts News Now:

Darren Grosvenor held  Ac Js which looked rather nice on the  Ks Qs Tc flop.  Even better was when Paul Traynor went all-in with him holding  Qh Jh.
Turn:  9h
River:  As  for a chop! 

Tikay reports the chips are now "still about even" after that bit of excitement.

Anthony Nicholls the 4th place finisher - winning £14,000 -

Nicholls = 6s 6d
Boatman = Qc Jh

Nicholls was the short stack after his pocket kings were crushed earlier, and it was cheap for Boatman to call.

Board = 9d Qh 8d 5c 9h

Nicholls sensed this was his swan song and he waved goodbye before the flop.

Clearly devestated, Nicholls leaves the table to a well deserved round of applause and a dreadful interview with Tikay.   

To be more precise, they are 650k (Barny) and 500k apiece the other two - Paul Traynor and Darren Grosvenor.  Barny just took down a smallish pot (although with 5k the only denomination still in circulation, and 30k in blinds in every hand, no pot is tiny) so has extended his slight lead.

I caught the end of a big hand between Barny and Darren: The board looked like:  5d 7s Js Qc Kc.  Darren bet out 50k, and Barny raised a further 150k (about half of Darren's remaining chips).  He had a good long think (not unusual) but this time had a decision we all got to see the thinking behind:  He eventually called showing  Ks 2s.

Barny said, "I put you on a busted flush draw" and showed his  7h 9h, which lost him a tidy sum.  Well, he was half right...

Still 20 more minutes at the 10k - 20k blind level.  To be honest, I thought this one might have finished them off, but there have been quite a few cagey call'n'check kind of pots played where we get to see all the cards but no one wants to bet, and someone wins their own blind and a call's worth at the end.  I think they're going to have to do some serious editing for this DVD of theirs...  Not that it isn't fun to watch, they are clearly taking it all very seriously and a small but persistent crowd of spectators has gathered whose secondary role is to gently push me out of the way.  I'm going behind the screen.

Ta scottm!  We are getting a regular fix of sugar from the dessert menu... and there are three of us (I silently cheer snoopy's energy reservoir, which is seemingly bottomless, although he's actually sitting down now instead of hovering round the table).  It's easier when six eyes are kept on a table.  Ten now that Tikay's joined us.

All the money went in on a flop of 9c Jc 8h.

Grosvenor, who was sitting on the button, called an all-in raise from Traynor.

But Grosvenor tosses over Tc Qc for the straight.

We're now heads up with Grosvenor chip leader.

And just like that, it's over!  Darren Grosvenor is the Midlands Masters Champion, winning £66,000!

Having just gone all-in with his 5 times chip lead, making Barny pass four hands in a row, Barny took the initiative on the button with  Td 3h.  But Darren Grosvenor found  As Qs!

The board came a very final  6s Qh Ah Qd Jh and Barny Boatman finishes in 2nd place, for £34,600.

Congratulations to them both, and everyone who's played through this lengthy Day Two of the £1500 event.

In Paul Traynor's case he bought in for $30 dollars.  He won a $10 sat, rebuying twice into a $100 super sat in which he didn't rebuy.  So he has spun £17 or thereabouts into £19,000!!

And well done to Jen and Snoops for doing so well on the stamina front :D

A big thank you to Dani, Zak and all the staff who made this such a successful comp.

And a massive thumbs up to the local hero, Darren Grosvenor, whose pockets are now slightly heavier than they were when he arrived.

Kings get cracked, as do Aces. That's poker. But I thought you played Marvellous Simon.

Simon was on my opening (well, only...) table, which was serioiusly lairy. A Johnson was running amok, betting bottom pair & getting away with it, & just as we sussed him, he got moved, doh! And Robert Binelli was playing a very odd game - for him - raising in the first level with K-3, calling with 7-2, da de da de da. Darren Grosvenor was on it to, having a torrid time, never won one hand. Ian Woodley, thieving as usual, and Iwan Jones. Tough table.

But Simon just sat there very quietly, & making a raise maybe once evey 2 orbits. Such was his table image, that I don't think he ever got a caller. Great effort Simon, well done.
