Title: Sandwich thread
Post by: thetank on March 10, 2009, 04:47:05 PM
The sandwich is a food poker players should have something of a connection with.

It was invented, after all, by that chap who was so engrossed in a card game that he didn't want to stop for dinner. The foodstuff of degenerates!

I've been experimenting with different combinations recently, with mixed success.

I'm currently a fan of corn beef and coleslaw on a chesse topped roll. Wondered if anyone else wanted to share their favourites?

(I'm missing more than I'm hitting in my experimentation, need guidance in formulating the ultimate degen snack)

Good idea for a thread Dewi!

Many favourites here, off to ponder the primus inter pares.

Not massive on them as an everday lunch item, but i did have a nice gammon and branston pickle one last night, on a granary roll as a snack...

Strong Cheddar with coleslaw is a particular fancy of mine but, when I have the stomach for it, I will go for fresh crusty granary bread spread with butter and lots English mustard containing hot crispy smoked bacon and thick cut raw onions. It helps to clear the sinuses :)

Any fav sandwich of mine would be made using french stick apart from that: ham n grated cheese, turkey & stuffing or bacon and sausage all work as well for me

I am a huge admirer of the sandwich.

A preference of mine is to take whatever you might have as a proper meal - and just stick it in a sandwich.

A bakery near where I used to work encouraged me with this, around Christmas they did a Christmas Dinner Sandwich.

Unlike some bakeries that wimp out and just give this name to a Turkey and Cranberry sandwich, this one did it properly.

Turkey, Cranberry Sauce, Roast Parsnip, Roast Potatoes, Peas and Gravy - awesome sandwich.

Admittedly it's probably a bit early in the thread for an adjunct, but over the last couple of days I have rediscovered the joy of pop tarts (which are a kind of sandwich), after a hiatus of many years.

Do they still make the apple ones - I can only find strawberry and chocolate.

Oh, do rolls count?

Och aye, it all counts.

Whoa, hold up. This is England.

A sandwich has to, & can only, consist of "filling" sandwiched between bread, cut from loaves.

Rolls, cobs, baps, french farty nonsense, etc, can NOT be part of a Sandwich.

Not exactly fast food but I have been cooking an oxtail and bean casserole whilst watching Cheltenham today.

I started cooking it at around 12.30pm and it will be ready for about 6.30pm.  ::)

I do know that one of Red-dog's favourite sarnies is a cheese and beetroot creation.

Roast Chicken, red Leicester cheese, corned beef, pepper on fresh thick cut white bread

Importantly three slices for triple decker effect, allowing for two combinations on top and bottom layer. Crucial this, must be triple decker

Secondly, smoked salmon and cream cheese with lemon and pepper on a bagel, topped with poppy seeds, the bagel gently grilled for 93 seconds prior to filling

my grandfather, who I never knew as he died when my mother was young, used to eat a sandwich containing a frys cream chocolate bar.

my own favourite is when I am in the US - and can indulge in a proper "reuben" sandwich.

at lunchtime there I had a nice sandwich, rare roast beef and about half a ton of english mustard. the tears were stillstreaming down my face as wichita lineman romped to victory....

Roast beef and horseradish is my current lunchtime fave, as I'm supposedly on a diet and it's reasonably low calorie.

Previous to that I had mature cheddar, ham (got to be decent ham) and Branston (small chunk) pretty much every weekday for 18 months. Although the sainsburys red onion chutney is very nice in this combo as well.

Proper bread ideally, but given I can only realistically buy once a week, the Hovis Best of Both is pretty nice, and a nod to health there too :).

1. Pot noodles must be the most nutritionally deficient 'food' in the world. Seriously, the stuff I remove from peoples bottoms probably has more minerals and vitamins in it than that rubbish.

2. Best 'sandwich' in the world is small pieces of chicken cooked in the wok, mayonnaise spread on a wrap, salad including tomatoes and possibly cheese on the wrap and hot chicken on top. All rolled up and eaten for lunch. Takes only a few minutes and it's yummy.

My favourite is a few slices off the roast beef while it's still warm on white bread with lots of butter and a wee bit of the gravy also still slightly warm.

I even leave a wee bit of room for the sandwich when eating the roast dinner, and there's no need for desert when that's waiting for me.

I call this creation:

The Carrot Sandwich

Conceived in a moment of Saturday night, Tesco's-shut desperation out of pretty much everything in my fridge, it actually turned out astoundingly well and has become a firm favourite in times of not having enough money to order out.

Take one flour tortilla. Spread it thinly with hummus. Squash a quarter of an avocado on to it. Top with grated carrot, grated cheese, any stray bits of vegetable you might have (cucumber, lettuce, red onion, tomato all good), natural yoghurt or sour cream, Thai sweet chilli sauce, a liberal quantity of Crystal brand Louisiana hot sauce and a more modest quantity of original Encona hot sauce. Roll it up and eat. Also works well with regular bread.

Please reserve judgment until you've tried one. Taste sensation.  :)up

:)up

Why didn't you let me go on suspecting that you were mental instead of proving it beyond all doubt?

Subway: Meatball with cheese red onion and lettuce, topped with south west sauce all mixed in

The local curry roll shop has to be the best, its just traditional indian chicken curry wrapped up in a plain naan THE BEST!!!

My own: Anything I can knock together in the toastie maker, chicken tikka and cheese is a new one of late.

oh and the full english stottie can't be beaten either.

:D
