I think I'm missing somehting tho. Isn't accepting or declining the deal a simple matter of adding up all the possible prizes and dividing by the amount of prizes there are?

eg. the last offer today for £200 when there were two boxes of 10p and £500 left. Surely any offer under £250 should be declined. What's to think about?

Plus. Is there much skill in this game or is it just a case of guessing the right boxes?

Quite scary how brain dead some of them are... but amusing, the deal should nearly always be ingored from a value persective... but if its a coin flip between 50p and 250k and he offers you 100k ... are u gona risk it??  :)

The show is imported from Italy I think. Well, it's been on Italian TV for over a year. The english version is very tame in comparison. Last week a woman had 1 million euros in her box. She took a deal of 60k! Tonight someone turned down 30k with just 2 boxes left: 5 and 75k - he won 5 euros!

A dude on the UK version today whos been on there from the start I think 25 days, walked away with a magical 10 pence! (might of been 50pence)

the answer is actually yes, as one of the contestance went on the phone to him and spoke to him about a certain deal on the table.

I saw this when I put myself on 'gardening leave' last week.

The show is tremendous and needs to be given a prime time slot. I was instantly hooked. I don't normally like NE either, but I think that he is quite a good host on this.

go on admit it.. who was working out the pot odds?   lol    I found myself working out the odds of taking a 7k deal compared to winning 20k earlier..    I must get out more   :D

the pot odds are usually favourable. today for example the final coin flip was £8500 up to £20000. evens is obviously £17000 but if the alternative is taking home 1p I'm afraid I have to decline the spin. the only time I could see myself refusing the final deal is if I have two bankroll changing sums of money. say £75000 / £100000 you're likely to get offered £85000. if £75000 is worst case I think I'd take the coin flip. at the end of the day its £75k in your pocket and the other £10k at 5/2 on an even money shot. let 'em roll

How do you arrive at £17000? 50% chance of £1. 50% chance of £20000. Offer £8500. Real odds were £10000.50p on a coin flip? Or have I missed something?

there are two boxes, one has 1p (effectively nothing) in and the other £20k. you have £8500. if you were getting even money on your 50/50 shot you'd be getting £17000 wouldn't you? as it goes, the pay off is better than that.

you have to treat the bankers offer as your stake because you can take that without proceeding with the gamble.

You're being offered £8,500 when the true deal should be £10,000 (if u assume 1p is zero)

You have an offer of £8500 but how you get this to £17000 baffles me.

You have three outcomes:

Take £8500.

Refuse and open 1p box
Refuse and open £20000 box.

I guess the whole game depends on how wealthy you are and how desperate you are for the money.

That £300 offer at the start was a joke though.

Just a way of generating action. Not good TV if they accept early offer :)

if you were being offered £10k then there be no pot odds incentive to take the coin flip because you'd be getting evens. the offer is below that so if you gamble the £8500 your pay off is about 5/2

doubt it. amuses me when they talk about the banker reading the player or respect or tactics. The banker will be making an offer based on the number alone I would think.

surely it's easier just to divide 20k by 2?

look at it this way, if instead of a telephone offer they brought out the cash it'd be clearer what your dilema was. if they brought out a case with £8500 and said "would you like us to take that away in exchange for the contents of your box, which could be either 1p or £20k?"
you're gambling £8500 to win £20000 your profit if you gamble and win is £11500. as it's an even money shot a fair return on £8500 would be £17000 wouldn't it?

Its basically that old question that comes up from time to time. you're offered a 5/2 pay off on a coin flip but you have to gamble everything you have, do you take it? or 5/1 or 10/1 etc
if you could take your £8500 and break it into 10 lots of £850 and take as many 5/2 coin flips as you like I'd be there all day. one shot, give me the £8500 and find me a cash game.

Your pot odds or EV are just a case of adding the value of all the boxes together then dividing by how many boxes left. The joy of this game is that you get one shot and you are risking going home with very little when you could take something that will make a real difference to you. Of course earlier game the offer can be dependent on how many boxes you have either side of the offer therefore the chance of taking certain boxes out before the next offer and how this will affect the offer.

I know one of the guys (Madi) that has been on Deal or No Deal as he was on another TV show with me. He was finally picked after weeks of shows and was doing really well until they offerred him £28k for the box. Sadly the gambler in him said no deal and he ended up with £4k.

Today's episode is the first time I've seen the banker offer a good deal.

The remaining boxes contained 5k and 20k. Therefore, the average is 12.5k. Remarkably, the banker offered 13k.

I think he did that as she was coming across as a "no dealer" and he was worried that she'd open the box (which was £20K)...this programme is taking over my life :D

I saw this for the first time yesterday - i didn't get it initially - Noel was going on about balancing either side and i thought that if too many large ones fell off the right the whole thing would collapse. realised I am over complicating a very simple game - which is very addicitive!

I have it all planned out when I get on (Because I must get on) I'll start on far left and simply go left to right. and I'm getting pretty good at guessing the bankers offers. I'll use that to try and get them up.

Deal of no deal?

No deal, firstly your box is worth around 33k in principle.

Secondly, once you take away the next there are about 5 times out of 8 that your box will double in value and 3 times out of 8 your box will halve in value. Much more to be gained than lost. £17k is not really a life changing amount for most people and the risk that you'll pick the 250k and the 15k box in your 3 picks is so slim that it's well worth the risk.

I saw an episode the other day when the guy comes on and the first thing he says is that he's not a gambler. Is there a worse thing to say on that program? He just opened the flood gates to some pissy offers from the banker.

17k is a lot of money to a lot of people tho. You telling me you wouldn't be tempted?

Cracking game today, the 30k deal was impossible to turn down IMO

The bare maths say your box is worth 50k and so deal would lose you 20k. For me though if I were to gamble here....

2 times out of 5 you'll get a deal of 100k+ so make about 70k (assuming I'd take that deal)
3 times out 5 you'll get hee-haw and lose about 30K

(2*70 + 3*-30)divided by 5 = 10k

So it's 10k in EV I'd be giving up rather than 20k. I could live with giving that up for a guaranteed 30K so would do this deal.

I see life as a great big poker tournament and avoid huge scale marginal gambles ala bird in the hand styl-e.

Don't be fooled into thinking he'd have ben offered £110K after the next 3 boxes as he had thought the £250K box was elsewhere and would have picked it if he'd carried on after the £30K deal. This is the part where the show goes down as they quite clearly don't "carry on picking the numbers they would've done"

Although it's not a great deal, I don't think there's too many folk who can afford to turn down 30k, especially on just a 1 in 5 shot.

I loved his little grid showing the blue and red boxes over 20+ shows. Reminded me of the punters at the roulette wheel with their pens marking off the numbers hit and making their bets on that "information" :D

I think his system fell down because he noted what each person (or replacement person) had in there box, where I believe he should have noted each box number instead. That would have been are much more sure system.  :D

This show has been here in France for 2 years , the boxes range from one cent , a shoe up to €500,000 , the banker definitely knows what is in the box , very rarely do people change their box , here every two boxes the banker makes an offer of money or the option to change their box , they use the theme from gladiator in the background , the contestants often get very emotional and when there are only two boxes left they all link arms .

Whatever is won is shared with a viewer who has called in which is how they make the money , hence it is possible to win one shoe as happened this week .

I will checkout the UK version when i get home on the 5th and let you know how it compares , i enjoy the French version as you dont have to understand what is being said to get involved .

Hmm, I remember reading a Slkansky analysis of this situation. I think he said you should always switch and proved why mathematically. I trust Sklansky's maths so I'm switching but I couldn't understand the reasoning at the time and I can't remember where I read it....

with the goats you should always swap, this doubles your chance of winning.
not the same with Edmonds' boxes those as these are random and nooneknows what is where so it's a 50/50 call whether to switch

don't know if they choose them themselves, I've never seen the start, but don't see that it matters.

with the goat example it's the hosts knowledge that makes it right to swap, it takes away the random element.

but if you have just 2 boxes and noone knows what is in each one it must be 50/50.

I think

1 time in 3 you will choose the door with the car and therefore it is correct to stick with your choice.

2 times in 3 you choose a door with a goat leaving 1 car and 1 goat. the host knows which is which so shows you the goat leaving a car behind the other door so it is correct to change your choice.

so only 1/3 of the time is it correct to stick with your choice

In a way I think he is better off being remembered as the first to win 1p, rather than just taking £100 home. Something to tell the grandchildren about and all that.
Don't really blame him for decisions made as offers weren't great and the only good one was early in the game when big numbers were still there to be won. Just had a bad run & at least he hadn't turned down a massive sum only to crash and burn.

yeah, bad deal. even if worst case scenario she took the 250k, 100k and 75k she'd still have the 10k and 50 k on the board and been offered 14k ish which she'd obviously have to take. as it was the 42k would have been the deal to go for. I dont think if she'd got that far she could risk going on.

Not a great offer, but a justifiable one considering he had no safety net, I would have accepted that offer through gritted teeth, but accepted all the same.

Such a low offer makes me wonder if what Aces said about the French version is true here. That the banker knows what is in each box.

I just think the guy looked so relieved that he hadn't knocked out the £250 k that he would have dealt at anything apart from a silly figure. Spooky how he skipped the number 9 box and then went back at the end to find the £250k there. Mind you if the really knew what he was doing he would have done no deal and kept the box till the end.

my understanding is that we're quite strict over here about what Noel says at the begining. if he says banker doesn't know and there's an independant adjudicator I think it has to be straight up.

If he knew what was in the box he wouldn't have offered £20K

     i dont mind the title of the thread been changed , im still hooked on the program but noel edmond annoying the hell out of me. He trys to talk all the contestents into taking rediculously low offers and at the same time advocating hes on the contestants side. On one show this week he talked a girl into taking 26k when the true value was 45k+ ( a second hand car dealer couldnt have done a better job of talking her into it) then when they continued and the next offer was 70k+ told her how shed made a big mistake dealing to soon.

no, the EV based on the money left was about £2800. The fact that her box was the one containing £5k is irrelevant

I think what saphire means with 5 boxes to go the amounts add up to about 26k (20k, 5k and the little ones) there the EV is 26 000/5 which £5200. Instead of £4000. I still think its a good deal not far off EV for this show and you have to take into account the risk factor and how much 4k makes a difference to the average person in the street.

she took out all but 3 of the lefthand side of the board and I think only 1 from the right. She got the highest ever 1st, 2nd and 3rd offers. I switched on for the 3rd offer when nun posted, this was about 30k. she then proceeded to take out the top 3 boxes 1 after the other, ended up with 10k and something very low (maybe a tenner, not sure) took the 4k offer and had 10k in her box.

you cant risk 14k if worst case scenario is £1. there's no wat I'd take the £28k he was offered because you're worst case would be the £1 and £10k left which would be an offer of about £3k, which I'd take. your goal has to be get down to an acceptable figure and a dream figure then take your shot. for example if your lat two boxes are £10k and £100k the box is worth £55k so your offer will be about £40k. I say no deal there and mnetally accept the £10k. if it's £1 and £100k and I'm offered only £25k I deal because the £1 is unthinkable.

He rejects the offer then takes out the 250k and 100k in the next round. rejects next offer get down to two boxes 10k 20k has an offer of 15k rejects it again, phone rings and gets the option to switch boxes, he has the two boxes placed together and asks everyone to really send him all there positive thoughts- energy  he then decides to swop boxes and ends up with the smaller box 10k LOL

you know what i hate about this program is the constant "playing a good game" and the "banker is scared of you"

Tough call today, although  ...I WOULD HAVE DEALT !!!   30k makes a big difference, and i couldnt afford to end up with 10k ....  losing 20k would hurt real bad ....   remember the 30k is real money and i spose (like i keep saying) it all depends on what a difference to your life that the deal offers.

i'd not deal in that situation and swopped the box,   only offered £20k more, although could be £90 k more

and £10k is not bad ;)

Tighty, say you won £30k in a tournament and I asked if you wanted to flip a coin for £20k of it to win an additional £70k and you had 1 go what would you say?

At the end of the day this is a pure gamble and a one off shot. £30k tax free is a lot of money but personally I probably would gamble for the £100k in my current situation but I would always urge most people to deal in that spot. I'm with Kev on this one.

All through the show he was gettign offers at £6100 and every round he would take out a big number and the offer stayed the same. He finally gets left with two boxes 1p and £35,000 and he is offerred £7100.
He is clearly on adrenalin and bouncing around and no doubt he will call no deal. Noel tries to calm him down but no chance and the guy goes no deal. He also declines the offer to swap the box.

yes it started back yesterday after a summer break, still the same remaining players too.

so to sum up for the ones that missed it, yesterday was a Scottish bird, canr remember her name i think it was Isabelle or summit, anyway...

with 8 boxes left including 75,000 and 100,000 she was offered 12,500 - No Deal

she then took out 2 blues and the 75,000

so with 5 boxes left (3 blues, 3,000, and 100,000) she was offered a measly 7,000! - again she No Dealed!

she then took out the 100,000 then the 3,000 then the highest blue £750, leaving £10 and £500

she klnocked back £300 and won £500.

great courage but shite ending!
