Title: Best Moment Of The WSOP So Far
Post by: NoflopsHomer on June 27, 2009, 12:21:16 AM
So every day they have a bracelet ceremony honouring those who have won events on the previous day.

Today they were honouring John Kabbaj, the traditional ceremony includes a playing of that person's national anthem.

So imagine to everyone's surprise when instead of the traditional God Save The Queen, from out of the microphones comes...

"God Save The Queen" by The Sex Pistols...

I'm a little shocked, but it becomes hilarious when ALL the players still stand quietly (and I'm talking about several hundred) in total respect to a punk anarchist anthem.

Fallout:

John Kabbaj didn't request this, he's getting a proper ceremony tomorrow. Apparently a few British players suggested it next time a Brit won a bracelet, about 10 days I jokingly suggested it to Nolan Dalla too (along with the Hendrix version of Star Spangled Banner) but I never thought they'd do it.

A few Brits are upset, Kabbaj rightly so, but a couple of others like John Shoreman didn't like it either.

Despite this, it's got to be one of the funniest things I've ever seen at a WSOP.

Awesome.

Slightly disappointed by the fact they'd stolen my move if I ever win a bracelet.

I was all ready to shush anyone who spoke during the song.

I would ask for Harry Belafonte's Jump In The Line.

Great stuff.
John has a cracking, dry sense of humour, and surely would have found it hilarious.
Not surprised Mr Shoreman found it distasteful.
Never met a more miserable man, lacking in any sense of humour, in all my life at a poker table.

I'm going to have "My Way" by Sid Vicious if I ever win one.

I bet Kabbage laughed his socks off.

The first thing I did after the ceremony was to ask John if he requested the song. He told me he had not. Had he requsted this  I would have said nothing. John was in shock. This was the pinicle of his poker life and it had been ruined. I knew he would say nothing. It was on johns behalf I made the protest. The ignorant wsop dierctors  actually thought this was a version of the national anthum. I have a sense of humour but this was just an insult to the British players. I spoke to john the next day and he confirmed  to me he was upset by what had happend. He played the 50,000 HORSE the day of the ceremony and he  said he was on tilt for 2 hours because of this.

So much for your reading abilities of how John would react. There hasn't been a Brit I have spoken to at the wsop who thought this wasn't in bad taste and felt bad and sorry for John

Thx for posting Jon and clearing things up

Did the WSOP directors give a reason for the change of anthem from when JP and Roland collected there bracelts.

I assume this wont be happening again in the future

Their first statement was that john requested it. John walked by and said he knew nothing about it. They then said "a few Brits  requested it" this I can beleive. I also beleive that they thought this was a version of the natinal  anthum. As I said, had john been aware of this or didn't have a problem I would have said nothing. But john was not aware and he did gave a problem , and so I said something.

Hard to believe the insular yanks would believe that was a genuine, alternative version of the national anthem...

If it was the Olympics I could see people getting upset but WSOP - get a grip.

I think its all pretty lame, who in the world apart from Hellmuth deems poker worthy of an awards ceremony with national anthems etc... good on them, maybe Richard Austin switched the CD's....

If it tilted Kabbaj, then I'll take that sort of tilt that gets you deep in a 50k HORSE anyday!!

I think the point that everyone is missing is John was not aware of the change.
Had he requested it then I say nothing, it's his ceremony.
But they changed the song because some other random Brits said it was a good idea (and they were just joking)
Do you think if some Americans suggested they play "fuck the USA" at the next American ceremony they would do it?
And if they did, do you think the bracelet winner would be happy and just say, ha ha good joke?
and what do you think the reaction of the crowd would be?
John was in shock, you could see it on his face, and he confirmed it afterwards that he was not happy about it.
This was an insult to John.
I know John pretty well and was sure he wouldn't complain. It is for all these reasons that I decided to say something.

I think the point you are missing is that you are making your friend out to be a pathetic whiny bitch over multiple poker forums.  It's more like character assasination than sticking up for a mate

Quote

then apparently at least he if not you understands that if you win 650K you do not start whinging about some stupid fucking song. you seem to be expecting us to be sympathetic ??? i honestly don't think anyone can be this stupid, secretly you don't like John and are cleverly doing this to slag him off right?

actually I think I am inclined to agree with Jon  & John here.

Big moment, first time you've won a braclet and ready to take centre stage, an position that many would like to emulate but only a few select few are ever likely to achieve, and its ruined by a joke like this, think I would be a tadge p*ssed off too.

Also the patriot in me, thinks that Jon is right to complain about his national anthem being made a mockery of, the yanks wouldn't stand for it, why should the brits. At the end of the day, its about a matter of personel pride in yourself and the country where your from.

good man for making a stand I say, does that make me an miserable old git too ?.

Absolute bullshit, i don't play poker for my country.

I had already decided if i was to win a bracelet that i didnt want them playing the national anthem was the most tilting thing ever having to stop in the middle of hands whilst everyone stood for the anthems.

LOL - ok, maybe so. Your probably right, its all gone out of proportion, and most obviously very funny to those who set it up, but if it was me on the centre stage, then it would have bothered me too. I don't know either of these gents personally but I do agree with their opinion.

Well said Flushy. In the half-dozen or so WSOP jobbies I played this year, a lot of players were delaying coming back from the break by five minutes in order to miss the award ceremony.
This is poker, an individual and totally selfish pursuit. It's not a sport. National anthems are out of place.
So a few Brits had a pissed-up wind-up moment and thought 'I wonder if we could get this hilarious jape through'.
They did. LOL.
If this had happened to the Yanks, you're right, there would have been uproar. But this is why we laugh at them. They are horrendously insular with this sort of thing.
You're not so much making yourself look insular here as a whinging Brit abroad.

moderated, for the time being anyway

feck, i was selling tickets for saturday... know how jacko's promoters feel now.

nah, likely to be the biggest disappointment since The Tightend and British Gas smiled politely at eachother and exchanged pleasantaries at Luton last week.

Apologies to those who thought we were actually threatening and swearing at each other.

To prove that we are such good friends, the next time I come up to DTD myself, Evilpie and the Clown will be spending a ridiculous amount of time in Senoritas. I'm not sure quite why this will mean we are good friends but damn it will be fun.

I sense a cover-up here, and I demand a cage-fight at least.

Trigg has already taken about £1K's worth of bets besides.

While I love the joke, he does look totally bemused at first & then gives what looks like a 'not happy but better smile' smile later.

Great gag, possibly wrong victim? I can imagine if it had been JP he'd have been pogoing about the stage.

BTW My 'alternative anthem would be this one:

Why wouldn't you like that? You've got what is probably the only interesting awards ceremony from the entire wsop!

Thousands of people have attended the hundreds of days of the wsop over the last few years.
It is so fccking boring that only 2 funny things have happened in all that time and quite a few players don't even find them funny lol.
1) When Hellmuth turns up for his start of the main event (let's hope he has something decent lined up this year) and
2) They put a punk song on instead of a national anthem.

Anyway back to being miserable I actually find it very offensive to have to listen to national anthems on returning from the first break at wsop events.
I mean seriously wtf. I, like most sane minded individuals spend most of my life trying to avoid all things patriotic and poker is 0% about nationality. You could tell how bored shiiitless Pollack and the touney director have been over the last few weeks as they boogied to the sex pistols lol.

You could request the catchy tune by Exploited called F**k The USA
Lyrics are.....

There really is nothing nice about USA
You go to the hospital you have to pay
The dollar is the language that they all speak
they don't really bother about the radiation leak

F**K THE USA

They keep their secrets undercover
the rich don't bother about those that suffer
this ain't the land of milk and honey
cause all they want is money money money

F**K THE USA

Nuclear bombs are f**k all new
you'd better start running when they drop on you
run into a shelter, play hide and seek
cause when you die your body reeks

F**K THE USA

There really is nothing nice about USA
You go to the hospital you have to pay
The dollar is the language that they all speak
they don't really bother about the radiation leak

Available as a ringtone from the http://www.lyricsdownload.com/exploited-fuck-the-usa-lyrics.html (http://www.lyricsdownload.com/exploited-fuck-the-usa-lyrics.html). If anyone fancies it whilst in Vegas :)

I also agree that the whole 'Olympics' style bracelet ceremony is totally pointless and cringeworthy. However, having spoken to John since his return he did confirm he knew nothing about it and was upset by the situation, saying it put him on tilt during the H.O.R.S.E event. Fair enough if a player had requested it, but to spring it on him was wrong, regardless of whether you think the whole thing is a load of poppycock.

In the unlikely event that I was in such a position, I would have requested that they play Woody Guthrie by Alabama 3. Here are the lyrics:

Another psychopath in Iowa, loadin' up another round, while the NRA in Columbine hunt Marylin Manson down, powder in the Pentagon, cruel letters in the mail, some KKK white supremicist, cookin' up a dose of race hate.

I don't need no country, i don't fly no flag
I cut no slack for the union jack, stars and stripes have got me jet-lagged (x2)
ahhhhh no flag
no flag, no flag

A baby in Afgahnistan, cryin for his mama now. While the BNP scare refugees in the alleyway's of oldham town, hypocrites in downing street pouring petrol on the flame. Satpal cries, asks paddy, why do we always get the blame?

I don't need no country, i don't fly no flag
I cut no slack for the union jack, stars and stripes have got me jet-lagged (x2)
ahhhhh no flag
no flag, no flag

I'll sing a song for the asylum seeker, for the frightened baby on some foreign beach, i'll bang a gong, and pray they reach a safe harbour. Some mother in Jakarka, she lays down her weary head, in some free-trade zone compound, where they work you till you're dead, hunger stalks the factory floor, famine and disease...seen the multi-nationals walkin' hand in hand, were gauny trounce these enemys, i'll tell ya now....

I don't need no country, i don't fly no flag
I cut no slack for the union jack, stars and stripes have got me jet-lagged (x4)
ahhhhh no flag
no flag, no flag
I don't need no country, I don't fly no flag
