Title: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 09:24:24 AM
Today sees the South of England Championship at the Grosvenor in Southampton, sponsored by Blue Square.com.

We have received approval fom Grosvenor to do a Live Update, & Poker 425 will be there to cover the action.

You may have to be patient with the Live Updates, as I think I will be lacking my usual assistants. But somehow, we will get you Updates, but do just bear with us. Course, if I exit early, you will have them straight away.......

Action starts at 4pm.

Grosvenor Southampton have pulled out all the stops today - instead of the usual round self-deal tables, they have proper tables & dealers.

And Blue Square.com have donated a lovely prize of a Gents & a Ladies watch, valued at about 1,000, for the "bad beat prize".

Brian Johnson is here, & Debbie Rogers.

Prize Fund is 43k, & it's a whoppinhg 43% to 1st, 19% to 2nd, & 10% to 3rd - smells like a deal! Money goes down to 12th (430).

Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 04:39:45 PM
Alrightjack here.

Tikay is now playing. When he went to find his seat at the start of the comp he found it occupied by Debbie Rogers. Seat 9 table 6, or was it the other way round...easy mistake to make and Tikay got his seat after security had moved Debbie on.

Brian Johnson is out. El Blondie's TT versus Brian's KK.  T on river.

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 04:48:59 PM
And Tikay himself is now up to 11k from starting chips of 6k.

He has John Duthie and Ian Woodley on his table and is getting a ribbing over something or another...possibly to do with all in flush draw moves...

Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 05:47:32 PM

We are on a short break right now. My thanks to Alright Jack & Rhowena for helping with the Updates.

Simon Trumper has 8,500.

El Blondie 11,000.

tikay 9,500

We have lost 3 or 4 players.

More shortly. Please bear with us, we are short of Updaters, & i am "hemmed in" against the wall, so cant get out to update. We have 6 or 7 folks ready to help once they are out, thoiugh maybe I will beat them to it - I am playing a bit lairy today for some reason.

A couple of exits

John Duthie holding AK versus player x with KK

Lucy Rokach with Kings full of Aces beaten by Quad Kings!!

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 06:05:28 PM
Ok, so I lied about Lucy's exit.  No idea what the hand was...and before anyone asks, player x is the new mateyboy.

AJ

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 06:25:11 PM
Lucy's real exit hand was KK versus Kevin 'Lovejoy' O'Leary's 99s. Flop came 9 high and looked relatively safe for Lucy, until the betting finished and the cards got turned over....

AJ

Jac Arama is out.  A7 v A3. Player x caught his 3 on the river.

Sorry about lack of coverage, we have had discon problems here, but hopefully sorted now.

Break now for Buffet, & we are already down to 5 tables, we started with about 90 runners.

I am about to go & gather some chip counts, but I can tell you that Team Blonde is doing OK so far. Dave Colclough has 8k (we started with 6k) & tikay has 17k.

4 tables left.

Steve Bovis has just gone. James Browning gone too.

Tikay lost chips to a Joe Grech preflop reraise. Tikay put down. Joe showed the Ace of clubs.

Dave Penly, Stuart Nash, El Blondie, Bambos Xanthos all going strong.

Oh, table breaking, down to 3.

AJ

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 09:58:53 PM
Camel is out. Getting low stacked he raised with 77 only to be reraised by Derek Fry (last year's South of England Champ) with AA.  Pot commited Keith was forced to call and the rest as they say....c'est la vie.

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 10:24:50 PM
El Blondie loses a big pot to Kevin O'Leary.  Dave has AT on a flop of 4TJ. Kevin has KJ. The chips go in and the turn , another J leaves El Blondie drawing dead. Down to about 15-16K now.

Internet connection is poor in here, hence the lack of updates.  The staff are still in the tourney, so I'll have to do  ;)

AJ

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 10:34:46 PM
Tikay on the button. Its folded round to him so he goes all in for 10,800 and even shorter stacked Mrs Xanthos calls in the small blind for her remaining 4-5K. Tikay shows KQ. Mrs Xanthos shows A9. Flop comes KQ.....

Tikay up to abt 17k.

AJ

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 10:44:48 PM
Bambos doubles up with AK versus Bruce Bravery's JJ. K on flop, another on river just to rub it in. Big pot takes Bambos up to circa 50k...break soon so chip counts to follow...

AJ

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 10:54:13 PM

On break now, so here's some chip counts....

Mark Jones 64k

Bambos 43k

Joe Grech (he on FIRE...) 80k

Kevin "Lovejoy" O'Leary 40k

El Blondie 23k

Stuart Nash 44k

tikay 18k

18 runners left, 12 get paid. Blinds about to go 1k-2k.

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 29, 2005, 10:57:18 PM

Willie Tann 15k.

Dave Penly OUT, he clashed with El Blondie, who had TT against Penly's Q-9.

Internet connection very flaky here, we gonna move positions shortly to try & improve it.

Meanwhile, we have 13 runners left, & 12 get paid, so next out gets the Blue Square Bubble prize.

Willie Tann is OUT

Stuart Nash is OUT

tikay is OUT. Tikay (that's me, sigh.....) exited in 14th. I had 20k & made it 10k with QQ, but Matey Boy moved all-in, I could not pass now, & walked into the dreaded AA........

Then my partner in crime, El Blondie, busted out, so HE got the Blue Square.com Bubble prize.........

So 12 left now.......

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update

12 left on 2 tables, but it's NOT hand for hand. Some chip counts in a mo.......

10 left, 1 off the Final, currently playing 2 tables of 5..

Bambos has just gone in 11th place.

Kevin "Lovejoy" O'Leary 57k

Dave Capon 30k

Derek Fry 42k

Joe Grech 90k

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update

Oops, serious omission, I just noticed Tony Hit Man Hakki is still in, he has about 30k.

Dave Capon, who we told you about earlier (Local Lad, qualified for 10) has just doubled up against Lovejoy. Dave had AK, Lovejoy had A-T, & board came x-x-x-K-x. (So Quad X's???).

Dave Capon now up to 80k+.

Phil Cooklin netted 1,700 for 6th. I sat next to Phil for much of the evening, what a great guy & gent he is too. He's sad to bust out, but is still beaming from ear to ear.

5 left, blinds are 5k-10k, & with Mark Jones down to around 30k, expect action from him very soon......

If push came to shove, there would be a chip count at 04.30, but I fancy it will finish before then.

Well one has gone, Mr Brookshaw (sorry to be formal, don't know his first name) just perished, he faced up to Joe Grech's AK with AQ. They both hit their undercard, so we are down to 4 now.

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 30, 2005, 03:24:23 AM

And Mark Jones went next hand, with 9-T against Dave Capons A-8,, Dave catching his A. THREE left now, & now they ARE discussing business.....

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 30, 2005, 03:27:09 AM

And a deal is done. There is 31,900 to play for, split 19k, 8.5k, & 4.4k. They have now agreed that both the 2nd & 3rd will take 8k, & the winner 15,900. So they play on.......

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 30, 2005, 03:30:51 AM

WOW! Dave Capon moves all-in, Joe Grech says "I never won a pot by passing" & calls. Dave is dominated with K-J to Joe's A-J. Board comes a breathtaking 5-5-4-4-5 - split pot!

They both look relieved. Only Lovejoy, looking for a freeroll ladder, looks disappointed!

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 30, 2005, 03:33:04 AM

I can't see this lasting much longer. There is almost 32,000 in lovely 50 notes laid on the table, & the chips are moving fast & furious now.......

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 30, 2005, 03:36:53 AM

Joe is showboating now. On a flop of K-J-4, & with all three players in the pot, they check to Joe on the button, & he gives it the "see the flop, bet the flop" routine. Kevin passes quietly, Dave passes too & shows a J, & Joe shows 5-6.........

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 30, 2005, 03:40:20 AM

It looks to me like Kevin is waiting for Joe or Dave to bust out, before getting busy himself. He fancies the 15,900, & he'd rather go to war heads-up than against 2 players...... That's my read, anyway........

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 30, 2005, 03:44:20 AM

Oh no, now I have bokked Kevin now. He gets all-in against Dave Capon, Dave is in deep poo with 6-6, whilst Kevin looks happy with life with his T-T. But a 6 flopped, & Kevin has gone. 2 left, blinds 6k-12k. They play to the death.

More money talk now, it seems.......

Joe is chip leader, by about 350k to 200k, approx......

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 30, 2005, 03:46:19 AM

Right, the Deal (Version 3) is 10k each, & they play for the balance, which is 3,900. The deal had to be done away from the table - that's the rule here.......

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 30, 2005, 03:50:36 AM

The last two, Joe Grech, & Dave Capon, are sparring heads-up now. Dave, the young, inexperienced lad, against the wily old pro. Hard to predict who will win - young Dave has been in a few bad spots tonight, but got out of it each time.

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on May 30, 2005, 04:05:04 AM

But he chances his arm once more by calling with 4-4 after Joe set him all-in with A-9 suited. An A flopped, & it's all over. Our winner is Joe Grech, & our worthy runner-up is Dave Capon.

So it's Joe Grech who is the Grosvenor Southampton Blue Square.com South of England Champion. Well done Joe!

And a special thanks from blonde to everyone at Rank, Grosvenor, Blue Square, & especially all the staff here at Grosvenor Southampton, who have been friendly, helpful & accommodating to us throughout.

The comp went like clockwork, & the structure & clock were just about spot-on, the buffet was excellent, & the valets were just great.

And an extra thank you to Jonathan Rabb, who assisted us during "staff shortages" tonight, due to tikay going all the way (but no further) to the Supe-Duper Bubble yet again.

A perfect day. Well, almost.....!

Goodnight all.....

HI there, nice to read the updates here.  Thanks for not calling me a total muppet, as i know sucked out loads on the final table.  I have a lot to learn!!
Jo was excellent, well done to him.  I had to go all in with the 44 - thought it would be a 50-50 and no way i could out-play him heads up.

Well done to everyone who played.

David

Hi David (Capon), I most certainly would not call you a muppet, you did just great. And you read the situation - that Joe would clearly outplay you if you tried to play down the streets - very well & combatted it superbly. If your 44 held up, it was almost all over.

And don't underestimate the scale of the task you faced. Joe is World-Class - truly - he just, in effect, won a serious comp in America for almost $400,000, & has won comps all over Europe, he is top drawer. So a great performance by you.

When will it be on TV? Wednesday night, for 7 nights running, 11pm, Channel 425.

I do feel I need to apologise for the sparcity of, & delay in, last night's Live Updates. My internet connection (mine, not the Casinos) was so flaky it drove us all mad.

And special thanks to Aklright Jack, without whom we would have had nothing at all until there were 13 left.

Thanks for the kind words Tikay :) Was it you who gave me the blonde poker card with a couple of tables to go?

To do well in these tourneys you certainly do need a lot of luck, and i got that without a doubt. The worst thing about how I played was that I lost my cool on the final table. I let my emotions take over, especially on the big pots where I sucked out. I should have stayed seated and calm. Well there is always next time. Any one know a site of listings of kool tourneys like this one?

One observation I did make before the final table, meaning no disrespect to other people was that many of the pros were playing a lot of hands, and trying to jackal the pots. I know that my post flop play would be no where near their skill levels but sometimes they did walk into situations that I myself would prefer not to get into. I hate to swing in chip amounts, and I saw lots of people doing it. I thought that Williie Tann was a prime example; i really did not want to clash with him as I thought he is the kind of player who would follow through with continuation bets, perhaps with his whole stack. If I clashed with him and lost i knew that i would lose all Folding equity. I much prefer to sit back and play my top hands, so that people know that if they come in against me it is going to be against all my chip stack, and a strong hand. Saying that i had good banter with Willie and enjoyed playing with him. He seems to be a very nice guy.

Another example I noticed was perhaps camel (only guessing this was your name because the report talks about someone losing 77 to AA. The large guy?) Well anyway he had a lot of balls. He must have sensed weakness in my preflop raise and pushed all in. I just did not feel that he had a top pair, so after a while i called with JJ and he showed A8s. He hit his A and took half my stack (stack size being another consideration in calling). Personally I would not make this move from middle position with others still to act, especially seeing as i wasn't playing many hands. The hand which he went out on there was a raise in early position from a seemingly tight player (derek??). He re raised with 77 and then called another re raise. Just wondering if you are reading this, did you have a special read? I would fold 77 without hesitation to an early raise. What i hated about his re raise was that it showed weakness. It made him pot comitted and i read it as 'i don't like my hand that much but want to steal' - he had no folding equity if re raised. I thought that he should have been a lot more assertive. If he gets reraised his whole stack has to go in anyway. If I thought the other player was weak I would push my whole stack in and put the pressure on him to make a decision. There is nothing worse than when betting impetus keeps on changing hands and you don't know where you are (even more crucial in post flop play). I find that a lot of players justify moving in with low pairs, justifying it by, 'i thought he had AK- giving a 50:50'. That is probably the best case scenario, and to be honest you are going to lose with it more often seeing as you walk into higher pocket pairs more often than not.

(i don't mean to offend anyones play, just hope to start a discussion, and this is my two cents)

Take care,

David

Nice post David. I am on a train right now, so hard to reply in a manner that does justice to your post, but I will reply later. And yes, it WAS me that gave you the blondepoker card. I think we found ourselves sat together in the semi, just before my QQ ran into AA....

I saw your interview today when we recorded the Poker 425 show - you came across just great! Try & watch it, 11pm tonight & every night for 7 days.

i thought i remembered your face from the pic.  I think you sat down on my right, and I asked you very nicely not to steal my blinds when you sat down. Can't remember if u did ot not though, but u were busted pretty quickly vs that AA :(  I am sure it was rigged!!!  I think you should phone up and complain about their random card generator being flawed and stealing your money!!

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update

Correct, you got me! I sat to your immediate right, saw your tidy stack, & said "ooh, are they all yours?", & you replied, "Yes, & dont try stealing them, because I won't stand for it"......

So I made a mental note to attack them. And then I found that damn QQ, & the rest is history........

Tell you what, the Southampton lads are a really friendly bunch, & I made a whole load of new mates. Great stuff, can't wait to come back.

yeah, a good bunch of people down here.

Found someone with sky in the end. The programme really did make us laugh!! that wig!!

In my above post, with regards to the A8s and the 77 person, it was the guy who u interviewed who had won a hell of a lot!!
What is his name?

When is this gutshot comp?  I might have to go to it :)

Title: Re: Southampton Live Update
Post by: tikay on June 02, 2005, 12:01:20 AM
"the guy we interviewed who had won a lot" - I think you are referring to Steve Bovis, who we profiled tonight. As I said on the prog, I can't figure Steve's game. RR-ing with A-8 aint a play I can make, though maybe he felt he could get you off your hand, & he was hoping you'd pass. In a comp at Luton - NOT the one he won - he did exactly the same thing with A-9 against Maqmood, from Derby. Maqmood had KK, & Steve caught his A. I just can't make those plays, but the guy has won a fortune this year, so who's to say he's doing it wrong?

The other guy that fits your description in your excellent post was in fact Keith Hawkins, aka "The Camel", & he was at Southampton on Sunday, & I think he exited with 77, but that was a desperation play after his stack had been decimated. He has a helluva game, & RR's with all sorts of middling hands, but that's his game, he tries to push folks off hands by sheer aggression. Now he is a class player, believe me.

The Gutshot comp is Thursday of next week, & is a 200 jobbie. I do hope you play a few more big comps, because I really believe you think about the game deeply, especially, if this does not sound condescending, for one who has only played for a few months. If you do, I'd be delighted to "mark your card" as to who is who.

That wig? Surreal, just surreal. Or, as I said tonight, "fascinating"........

First i should apologise to the camel, i got no idea how he went out.  It was how Steve Bovis went out on my table 77 vs AA.
I would say that Steves moves are definitely -EV with Ace high.  In the long run it will hurt his tournament game  seeing as he is 69% underdog with only the one overcard.  The only way i can think it wise is if he is a huge stack, when it is his job to suck out or he has pot odds.  i don't think A9 is a strong enough to even play let alone re raise with. I would even generally fold AQ to a raise?  Is this tight/weak?

I think i may try to go to gut shot this sat and sunday as well, just to practice.  I heard that william hill are adding 5 grand to the pot? Nice :)  It would be nice to figure out who is who.  No offence but i have never heard who any of u were before sunday.....

Well your views & mine on A-9 & the like are very similar!

Gutshot on Thursday of next week? Yes, Willaim Hill ARE adding 5k to the pot.

And if you do play the Gutshot/William Hill 200, I will spend half an hour pointing out the "faces" to you, & I will get a few of my buds to do the same for you. The poker boys really are, on the whole, very friendly & helpful, as you will see.

By the way, Poker 425 wll be there - so make the Final, & get some more exposure!
