Title: Greekstein's Legends of Poker
Post by: StuartHopkin on November 10, 2009, 09:02:32 AM
Some of you may have noticed that Cos's avatar is changing week by week documenting the people who inspire him, teach him and in general are just general poker superstars.

I would like to suggest that he posts a photo and a short description of why Cos defines them as great on this thread.

So far we have

Week 1 - Chin Chai Koh aka Chinese Frankie
Week 2 - Waheed Ashraf aka Wadey aka 'Is that how you play ace king'
Week 3 - We will wait and see!

I'm not sure those two need a short description as to why they are on an all time greats list.It would be like being asked to explain why your list of top ten footballers features Maradona and Pele.

Ok well, week one's legend was Chinese Frankie who I did a lot of admiring this weekend at DTD.

Here he is in all his manly beauty. It's just a shame he's wearing a hat so we can't see the amazing new haircut.

Frankie earns his place amongst legends of the modern game because he is one of the funniest guys to share a table with. Not only does he have a rare talent for poker but he has mastered the art of not breathing which allows him  to talk continuously.

A few highlights of him at a cash table last night: Red Dog and Mitch were there witness. I also welcome any blondes to share Frankie stories.

Earlier on in the evening I tell him he's my hero. I proceed to tell him that I'm gonna contact Howard Lederer and Frankie will soon be on all our screens. Later in the night the man himself doesn't realise I'm at the adjacent table and starts telling Tom and his table about GreekStein is in discussions with Howard Lederer and he'll soon be a red pro!

Britney Spears comes on the TV and Frankie turns around and says to the table, 'Wow I can't believe she still got it'. Frankie soon silences the table's discussion of Britney when he says 'I would love to smell her'. His comments of what he'd do with a straw were particularly disturbing.

All hail.....Chinese Frankie.

I love Frankie. At the sky poker tour thingy at DTD he was sat playing cash, when a couple of the presenters came and sat at the next table with some of the punters to play a sit n go. Frankie offered 66/1 on michelle orpe winning. I said I'd have some of that and he quickly added 'maximum bet 1p'

At the APAT weekend at DTD in August I was sat next to Frankie in a cash game (my eardrums obviously bemoaned my seat selection).

Leigh and Des were trying to do a video interview about 6 feet away.

They sure didn't give up after about 5 takes after on each one the interviewee was drowned out by ''ERE WHAT YOU TWO DOING. CAN I BE ON TV?'

During a verbal battle with Red-Dog inwhich they had both been slating each other for the past 15 minutes...

Frankie: Tom you is so thick, is it, that you not know what UTG means, is it!?

Tom: Well do you know what RHM means??

Frankie: What is it.......is it?

Tom: Red Head Man (reference to Frankie using his mrs hair dye to cover his greys, leaving him with a red scalp)

Frankie: cue fake dry laughter Aha ha ha ha.......Shut up mr 118 before i cut off that silly moustache and make you Mr one-one-seven! IS IT!!!!!

My phone just began to vibrate on my desk. I unfold the cover and see the name 'Wadey' come up. I don't normally take calls at work but I can't reject the call from a man with such table presence. If you think Ivey has good eyes at the table, he aint got shit on Wadey.

I go into a meeting room expecting a conversation about the legends thread. 5 minutes later and a story about a particularly bad beat beat in £5/5 6-card PLO and I can't recall a mention of the thread, just how lucky Pete Conduit is.

Anyway, Wadey promised to join up so I won't fully explain the beat as Wadey will most likely wanna tell u himself but the legend should be along shortly.

Virginal post.

I have browsed Blonde on a daily basis for some time. I wont prevaricate. My lack of understanding and fear of ridicule has, until this point, prevented me from commenting on in depth poker issues.

However, having never even met, or previously heard of 'Chinese Frankie', I still feel suitably qualified to class the man as a legend. He has brightened up my day.

I look forward to 'getting more involved'.

Ali 'Bag of Bollox' Ahmed with the goods, he truly is the king of bink.........

All joking aside and on a personal note, I really have a lot of time for Ali, he is a good guy and I always have a good bit of banter with him at the table.

Nice words about Ali too, I agree with you.  I don't think i smile as much at the table as when he is on it.

As it is only right, I shall now be doing a write up of the honourable Waheeeeeeeeed Ashraf: Our legend of week 2.

More commonly known as Wadey, I first met our hero when I was a reg at Nottingham's Gala casino. Wadey was as much of a presence in the card room as he was blasting at the blackjack or roulette tables. Often so loud and animated he could be heard simultaneously at gala casino in Leicester.

Wadey definitely makes himself known at the table, with his big wide eyes that put Phil Ivey's table stares to shame.

He isn't a shy man and has been known to answer a call from a double glazing salesman which went on for 38 minutes 53 seconds. The double glazing man only managing to utter the words 'Is that Mr Ashraf' before Wadey told him 3 months worth of bad beats.

Wadey believes Dealers Choice is a 100% luck game.

When not playing tournaments you can find Wadey in the Dealer's Choice Game at DTD.

Be careful not to sit on his immediate right or left as you will end up with severe bruising on your arm and shoulder as Wadey proceeds to nudge and tap you throughout the evening to point out how bad someone is playing their hand or what a brutal 1 outer turn card that is for him.

Anyway hopefully he'll join blonde an give us a few words.

Here are some pics.

Our legend of week 3, by popular request was Ali 'Bag of Bollocks' Ahmed.

With a thick asian accent Ali is always a pleasure to share a table with.

As his nickname suggests, Ali plays any two cards. Never sour in defeat but always happy in victory he's just a comedy guy.

Even though I've shared a table with him loads of times I've never shared any convo to get behind the legend that is Bag of Bollocks.

If anyone wants to share any Ali stories, speak now or forever hold your peace.

Week 4's legend - who I feel will be a popular one on here - will be up tomorrow.

Dunno whether it was true or not, but I read an article about said 'Morris' from Stanleys Derby, shortly after I played with him.

I think it was written by Carl 'The Dean' Sampson so bear in mind the article shouldn't hold too much weight, but it was all about how 'The Dean' was set up to go to a bent poker game by Morris at 'Pitbull Pete's'.

I have seen Morris from Derby at DTD a couple of times in the last month or so and the man is a perfect gentleman. He's in his early eighties now but still bright as a button and with his ready wit and good humour a pleasure to spend any time with. I will lay anyone a bag of sand to an Alan Whicker that he has ever been involved in any kind of crooked poker game, it's just not in the man's character, he's a diamond.

Legend of week 5 - Dave Smith

For a man Dave's age (and I hope he won't mind me saying that), Mr Smith is naturally unlikely to have the technical game of Alex Martin for example but his results probably exceed those of 99% of players his age in England.

Dave is always a perfect gentleman at the table and always good fun too.

The Dave Smith story that sticks out most in my head was when I was sat next to Dave playing Blackjack in Gala Notts. Dave wasn't playing nosebleeds but £50/hand sort of thing and the dealer was just brushing past him, assuming on 17 he wouldnt want a card etc. It wasn't so much playing for the table, but autoplaying for the dealer.

Anyway, Dave politely tells the dealer he'd like to be asked every time it was his turn. The dealer continues to go along as before and Dave is visibly a little irritated. Dave has two picture cards, against the dealer's picture on the end box. As the dealer brushes past Dave as if to draw for their own hand Dave quickly interjects.

"You have 20 sir"
"Yes I know that. But I'd like a card"
*Table looks at Dave as if he's gone crazy but proving the point was obviously more important to him*
"Are you sure sir?"
"Card pls..."

Over rolls the ace of hearts...stopping the dealer from getting blackjack and making them subsequently bust.

Share your Dave Smith stories...

Dave is a great guy - such a character

I have played with him many times and recently at the DTD 300 in Nov for 6 hours with him to my immediate let. He is a pleasure to share a poker table with.

I dont think Dave will mind me saying (as we spoke candidly about it), he wont be getting better. Not withstanding this he is following some pioneering treatment which will hopefully extend his life as much as possible - providing he is still enjoying it - which he very much was 5 weeks ago.

Let the thread continue with great Dave stories thou - i just thought it right to keep the comments on track with regards best wishes.

Dave - you are a gentleman and a legend.

The legends of poker took a short break but is now back for its final few weeks.

This weeks legend is not known very well to me. In fact, I only shared a table with him for the first time this weekend but I'm pretty sure he still gains legendary status amongst most. He's so much of a legend that it's even in his nickname.

Taken from Wikipedia....

Michael (Mickey) D. Wernick (born 2 July 1944 in Wolverhampton) is an English retired bookmaker and professional poker player from Birmingham.

Whilst growing up, Wernick was a keen amateur boxer and won the Midlands Area Amateur title. He has also met Sugar Ray Robinson and Mohammed Ali.

Wernick formed a poker club in 1970 with his father Solly. He was a mainstay of the British poker scene, who eventually began traveling to the World Series of Poker. He has since cashed on 6 occasions, in no limit hold'em, razz and lowball events. In the 1986 WSOP he finished 2nd in an Omaha event. (1)

Wernick made the quarter-finals of the 2003 World Heads-Up Poker Championship, losing to eventual winner "Miami" John Cernuto.

Wernick was ranked the #1 player across all poker variants in Europe for 2005 (1). This led to his induction into Bruce "Elvis Senior" Atkinson's European Poker Players Hall of Fame as its 8th inductee, making him the oldest inductee to date.

Wernick finished on the television bubble of the European Poker Tour event in Deauville.

As of 2008, his total live tournament winnings exceed $860,000.[1]

Finally a Youtube interview with the man himself, being given sympathy by a blonde hero....

On reflection, yes, I agree. There's a fine line between the two at times.

Somehow, I don't see any of the resident blonde Grimmers making it into Cos's series, tongue-in-cheek or not.

I like Mickey. Don't know a lot about the nipping/borrowing but I do know he's unfailingly polite and has shown blonde some unexpected kindnesses.

Back in 2007, I think it was 2007, Mickey was in great form and playing every ranking event under the sun in his attempt to win the Player of the Year which was then sponsored by Mansion and came with a £20,000 prize. blonde's updates followed Mickey and Pascal Perrault, with whom Mickey was battling for the POTY crown, to every event, it of course being a time when blonde was updating everything it could.

The POTY chase came down to the Luton Christmas Cracker, old Luton, and I was updating it. This was pre GUKPT so regional festivals were the live games of the day and anybody who was everybody on the circuit was turning up to play it

In the main event both Mickey and Pascal made the final two tables and it was tense. In the end Mickey won the event, and Player of the Year and left the blonde updaters a tip for "a drink", way beyond the amount needed to buy a drink.

I remember that event fondly.

In 2009, as far as I am aware Mickey's form has been dreadful and his mood "darker". You can see the pressure on his face at events.

In the year he won the Player of the Year though, his form was good but his play (including some incredible passes that not many players make) was right up there.

Mickey Wernick IS a legend ...

Vegas when Lawrence Gosney won his bracelet ... we were having a celebration in the round bar at the Rio and Mickey generously offers to get the cigars in .... 5 mins later there are about 10 of us smoking the biggest cigars ever, and Mickey picking up a massive bill !!

Also whenever Mickey scoops a live comp which is being updated, he ALWAYS drops the updaters a drink.

Top man Mickey Wernick.

top fella, always has time for everyone (especially if he has a particularly 'interesting' bad beat story to tell).  looks fucking miserable at all times but its just his way... very drole!

When smoking was allowed in the casinos but not at the table he would constantly be walking back and forth between the rail and the table, often falling foul of the rule of having to be seated to play a hand.  It often provoked many funny scenes of a slighlty unfit old fella running for his hand just as the dealer scooped it!

don't be fooled by his 'tighter than an otter's pocket' image either... he has a few moves!

deserved UK legend status IMO

Legend of week 7 - Vaidas 'Vargas' Siriunas

This man below is such a funny guy to share a table with. He has plenty of gamble in him and even though he might look like an assassin from Eastern Europe he's a very friendly guy.

Relatively new to poker Vargas used to be a complete fish but genuinely seems to absolutely LOVE poker and has improved a LOT in the last few months.

Anyone who knows Chinese Frankie will know how awesome it is when Frankie says 'Is it'. Vargas has a similar thing where he ends most sentences with 'You know'.

Hopefully blonde member Mitch can share some stories about Mr Vargas, as I believe Mitch is staking him atm but anyone else is also free to share any comedy hands they've played with him or any Vargas stories!

Good choice Greeky. Vargas is a Leicester legend and I had heard many a tale of the mad Russian playing cash at our local gala.

Believe me if you think he's crazy now you should have seen him when he first played. He used to lose about 1500 quid a night which he felt was a winner cos he used to do 6k a night on roulette.

He plays blind when he goes on tilt which can sometimes be very costly!

Great choice.  Had heard all about him before I played poker with him, and all was true!!  First experience was his all-in call on the 37TK board to my re-raise on the turn saying "I need a 4, but I call".  He got there :D.

But he does it all with a smile, and is a lovely bloke.

Bst outdraw I witnessed was against Kev at gala.

Vargas had checked his straddle with 34. Kev had limped on the button with  Jd Td multi way

Flop is  Jh  7d 8d

Checked to Kev on the button who bets. Vargas SHOVES Kev calls off his last 200 or so. Pot is abut 650 quid.

Turn and river and off suit 3 and 4. Scoooop for Vargas

Thanks to Vargas and another local legend Nobby, we also saw a few pots which were straddled to 128 quid!!!!

F YOUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU!

Yeah the guy is a ledge! True that he used to do his bollox, but recently has deff improved and is a pretty dangerous player to have at your table when deep in a cash game.

Off the top of my head i cant report any hands that are not gonna make me cry or go on life tilt! Just the general...

"So this wanker raises with the dolly, you know, so i call with 79, you know fuck it, maybe he has ace king?!, flop comesa down 8 5 Q, you know, RAINBOWS, so i have GUNSHOT (lol) he shoves all in, so i think, you know could be bluffs, so i say fuck it, you got it i pay you ya'know. We flip the cards and he have top set the bastard. Turn comes 2 river comes 6, i scoop THE F'King lot" Sick you know"

Titaniunbean will have some stories from his first few visits to DTD. Think he made a habbit of snapping him wih bottom pair etc for stacks on many occasions.

My fave Vargas hand ws down gala playing 1/2 when he had been playing a few weeks.

Myself and Nobby had got to know Vargas a little and welcome him down to the game.  For those who dont know Nobby is a massive gambler and will gamble with anyone but is truely the nicest guy in the World.  Nobby has just given Vargas a spin when he shipped all in pre for 300 with 9 10.  So the action next hand: -

UTG opens to 12, I 3 bet to 40, Nobby ships 280, Vargas looks and his cards and snaps, everyone folds.

So 620 pot with Vargas and Nobby AIPF.  Board runs outs A,K,8,2,10.

Vargas "I think its yours"
Nobby "ha ha, no you win"
Vargas "I have one pair, you must win"
Nobby "I have 5 high" and flips 54
Vargas "I did have 5 high but hit my 2" and flips 52

Was so com

Vargas "I just wanted to give him a spin like he gave me"

Amazing legend. Top top guy.

Had a few sessions when I first encountered him at DTD where we basically played the special 1/2/12 HU game  ;gobsmacked;

Literally 7 seats of limp folding ignorance vargas raising to 12 every hand OR calling anywhere between 10-20 like it's a post hole card ante. The table would just fold and let us play heads up together.

It got to the point where I would just isolate reshove over his raise with Ax for values. Had about 5 limps to him on the btn he makes it 12, I jam 230!! for value with AT green. I get super snapped and am thinking hmmmm wat it do. when the announcement of......

I have king.............

He had only looked at one, K3o no good sir (how did I hold I know!)

OH and of course who could forget when playing no limit holdem with vargas hand rankings change, you just have to beat 'two pair' by the river because vargas never has less.

It's so true that all you have to do is give him some action and he will return the favour!! Considering he stacks off with less than 0% equity sometimes it was funny to see the other day when a 'nitty' player c/r him so small to a size where you couldn't imagine him folding he folded TP, I REPEAT TOP PAIR!!! Then said if you EVER called me or gambled i'd be so quickly in with this!! Watching the other guy muck a set made me feel really good rotflmfao

Legend of week 7 - Vaidas 'Vargas' Siriunas
Hopefully blonde member Mitch can share some stories about Mr Vargas, as I believe Mitch is staking him atm but anyone else is also free to share any comedy hands they've played with him or any Vargas stories!

Think he made a habbit of snapping him wih bottom pair etc for stacks on many occasions.

ahahah brilliant

A worthy addition to the legends of poker Coslington.

The Big Charra

Pete Charalambous, a legend of the live poker scene and newish member on blonde 'SKGV' was coined the 'Big Charra' mainly by himself.

Luckily for anyone who plays live poker, Pete has given up playing online and can now be found mainly at the Vic and Dusk Til Dawn. Not luckily for your profits might I add, but it's worth doing your bollocks just to share a table with him.

Share your Pete stories and anecdotes here...

just been re reading the thread and had me in stitches. Two peeps who fulfill the criteria from cardiff are our very own james "sofaking",,,,,,,,,,,,, fisher- once played with never forgotten. magic tricks, stories from his boxing career, and endless mind games to induce a call when he has hit his gutshot. At the other end of the spectrum is sabah "the doc" Aris- a true gent and series final tableist ( is this a word?. his self proclaimed job ( well he is retired) is international lawyer.... which he happilly told a floor manager in vegas when a dealer was giving gip to his (fairly young looking) son at the blackjack table- the manager backed off aty a rate of knots. He is the only man I know who can fold his hand with less than a bb left and still quadruple up,make the final table and then negotiate " something for 9th" from a 40 man field- a legend- just ask tikay about these two.......

Today's legend is the youngest amongst our 'legends' group and you won't hear him above everyone else when you enter a cardroom. (You might see him over them though).

I doubt anyone could say a single bad word about the guy and he ridic owned Rooks 3-handed in a £300 final at DTD. Impressive poker resume, impressive guy....

I give you, Pete Linton's body double, James Keys....

He leaves dirty pans in the sink all of the time. Wanker.

Anyway having said that I could tell you many legendary Keys' stories. During some harder times at university, Keys and another friend pooled their money together and realised they had a grand total of around £6 between them in the world. Naturally they headed for a blowout in McDonalds but somewhere en route stopped off at a pub and spent all of their money in the world on 2 pints each. [  ] They ate well that night.

Legend.

Poker is running out of legends unfortunately so this thread hasn't been updated in a while but we have a new one today.....

Why is he a legend / comical Dubai stories?

1) Was skimming off the side of a cruise ship around caribbean. Problem is there aren't usually many stones on cruise ships. Np if you're Dubai, just use $100 chips.

2) 'when it comes to online mtts he's the schnizzles' - binked this for $600k. http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=49511.15

3) Wears these (not even as a joke or as a prop he lost with his mrs)...

4) My source tells me that Mr Dubai walked into the International the other night at about 5am, wanting to play a 2/5 Omaha game. With no interest he proposes hold em. Still nothing. Dubai now proposes 2/5 hold em, and he'll be paying everyone's blinds! Game fills. Dubai also agrees to pay for a cab home and drinks for anyone he busts.

Anyway, he's the new legend of the thread. Dubai stories please!

This next entrant may be one of the nicest, if not THE nicest and most pleasant man I've ever shared a table with. His nickname of 'The Gentleman' is no freak coincidence.

He is literally the consumate professional.

In 1998, he was in the final 7 of the WSOP main event and got it all in 3 way pre flop. Ben had Aces, Jan Lundberg has 1010 and Scotty overcalled the two shoves with AQdd. The flop came Q high with 2 diamonds and the river made Scotty a flush and was probably the hand that made him $1m richer and consequently world champion.

Someone who was standing sweating the table at the time said to me, 'Most people I know would have stormed off or thrown themselves off a building. Ben shook everyone's hand, wished them well and went home'.

Kinda sums him up. I don't expect tons of people to have stories about Ben but since he basically defines legend where poker is concerned he has more than earnt a place ITT.

Excellent choice. The interview below was recorded last week in Vegas.

The may he has mentored the basic disciplines of bankroll management & hourly win rates into his lad impresses, too.

One of my favourite poker people of all time, an absolute gentleman.

Despite being an old man with no hair, this guy is loved by the old and new school of UK poker players.

One of the greatest people I've met in poker and unfortunately I've only ever had the pleasure of Shaun's company about 3 times but I consider him a good friend. I'm sure many many blondes echo these thoughts.

A true gambler, he's earnt his place in this thread. Wp Shaun Conning, aka Claypole.

Known Shaun about 20 years, since the days when I was carting a beer crate around a snooker table whilst playing 'best of 3 for a tenner and the light' :D

Great guy, and definitely a legend!

UGGBOOTS.JPEG

4) My source tells me that Mr Dubai walked into the International the other night at about 5am, wanting to play a 2/5 Omaha game. With no interest he proposes hold em. Still nothing. Dubai now proposes 2/5 hold em, and he'll be paying everyone's blinds! Game fills. Dubai also agrees to pay for a cab home and drinks for anyone he busts.

Anyway, he's the new legend of the thread. Dubai stories please!

I feel like here is the best place to ask about the epic misclick/wcoop win. Anyone feel like answering or perhaps the man himself?

Dont think anyone could ever meet Shaun and not like him. Have played with him once in the 500 deepstack (busted his first bullet with KK<QQ vs me lol). Always has time for a chat, always has time to listen.

Good choice!

Agree with the claypole inclusion.

I do a fair bit of financial stuff with him, & he is as good as gold, & I don't have to worry, I know he'll treat me fairly, keep me informed, & pay me promptly. (Well I assume he would, if he ever won anything).

He had a rough ride in Vegas this year, having sold a big package, & bricked every event - until the WSOP Main, where he at last got a run going, & binked a very nice cash, which got us all out of it. I can't even begin to imagine what it must do to your head when you blank Tourney after Tourney on a package, but he kept at it, & got there in the end, shades of Chris Brammer last year. blonde has discussions about every aspect of poker, with the exception of the psychological side, what the game can do to our head, but Shaun passed the test that few others ever could.

He's a mug punter though, a proper ice cream.

Top bloke.

More Frankie gold from last night....

IS IT!!!!!

Was browsing this and quoted this . Still laughing with tears .

Ben Roberts is the nicest man you could ever share a table with. He literally class just pours out of him.

He also has the nicest collection of jumpers you've ever seen, they look like they've been woven from the mane's of baby unicorns.

The first man in this thread and absolutely the most deserving of the #1 spot.

We will miss you Frankie <3
