Title: And then there was one..... A Vegas Diary
Post by: George2Loose on June 23, 2010, 06:10:47 PM
I have decided to do a diary documenting my time in Vegas. I am now going (thank you mum and dad x).

There's many reasons why I want to do a diary- not least because this is probably a time in my life that I'll probably want to read back on someday. I know I've sounded very dramatic about things over the past few days but things will never quite be the same. It feels like the start of a new era. A fresh start. Whether this start will involve poker after this Vegas trip we will have to wait and see- one thing is for sure, I spose if I do leave the scene it will be a fitting way to end it.

I'll try and blog a little more about what the original plan was this year and what has happened to derail and ultimately make my 1st ever visit to Vegas very bittersweet.

Ok I'm going to go waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back and document this journey to where we are today.

Once upon a time Mr Bedi and Mrs Bedi..... ok maybe not that far back.....

Let's start with how I got into the pokers. I was part of the late night poker generation. I remember watching it and being abso fascinated by it even tho I had abso no idea what was going on (yeah yeah no change there then). I remember depositing like 20 bucks on poker room and losing it all playing God knows what. Think it was a no limit hold em cash game but I simply can't remember.

Fast forward about 2 months, I put 200$ on pacific poker after seeing an advert on tv. I still had no idea what I was doing, how to play properly. What's a dealer button What's position- A6? ALL IN (yeah yeh no change there then)

I actually started playing limit holdem obv not knowing the distinction between the 2! I was somehow and I have no idea how making money and got up to about 450$ in a week. I still had no idea about unlimited hold em or these things called tournaments.

I received an email from pacific poker saying they are running a 40$ 50k guarantee tourney on Saturday night. Say what? I registered for the tournament and don't ask me how WON the whole God Damn thing (yeh yeh no change there then ;) ) binking 9900$ which was HUGE! I would abso love to see a hand history of that tournament. I'm pretty sure in my early days I was over betting pots massive cos I remember people abusing me about it (don't tap the glass?). I cashed most of my winnings out and left around 1k in dollars on site. I then composed an email to the site asking them when the next tournament was running and they should try and run them more often lol. They directed me to the tournament lobby and so my life as an absolute tourney donko started to take shape......

Win the world :)

My parents have given me the money to be able to go. I did bink a seat but due to what's happened with Blatch and also running pretty bad online I won't be playing the main event unless some major binkage happens. I'll explain all of this later in the thread but keep the questions coming :)

I may use this as a Q&A too actually.

Can i take my laptop out there- will it work with an adaptor or do I have to purchase one out there?

Sorry if this sounds like a Paul Ho post

All you need is a plug adaptor. You will have to pay extra for internet access, whether that is a stand alone charge or in the compulsory rip off resort fee that every Vegas hotel has now.

Ha I asked the same question when I went over there, the laptop charger will be fine on US voltage. Well mine hasn't blown up in the roughly 3 months have spent in the US in the last couple of years.

Most hotels have a food court with a hot spot so if you want to get the odd day free of charge for just browsing.

The hotel internet room fees can be expensive

Fast forward to 2008. I'm playing a few local comps and doing well. Online is up and down. So much tougher than live. It's so funny looking back year on year how much my game as improved. I'm always eager to learn more about the game. Around this time I met Kev at gala Leicester and he introduced me to Paul and the infamous and now sadly disbanded best home game in leicester. Cracking bunch of lads who played there and of course the now famous Neil Blatchly. We were like any other home game- more about the banter then about the poker. We travelled to local comps together and considered ourselves to be the best local players about. Really really good times.

I hadn't really played any tournaments on the circuit at all. They just seemed out of reach. Me and Neil (sigh) headed down to play a 10r to the 500 gala tour at Notts. They had a promotion where if you played any satty you would get an entry into a free roll which guaranteed 5 seats. Me and blatch shoved first hand and headed down to dtd so we could play the free roll. I made a huge f up during the free roll and despite being 1/9 at the final didn't get a seat.

Sounds stupid but I had a strange feeling I was meant to play and binked it. It was obv huge- I even managed to beat a little known player named James Keys heads up and anyone who's anyone knows how BAD I am heads up (ask Tom Rutter). One stop later and Neil won the tour. Suddenly we were surrounded by publicity- was a great story for the "people's poker tour" but sadly it marked the beginning of the end of the homegame.... Neil and Paul fell out.

Ego's and envy went hand in hand. I'd like to point out this wasn't just down to Neil. At the time it felt like we'd outgrown the homegame. I'd like to think I my job and my family kept me grounded. Although it was just a small win in comparison to some it was easy to get carried away. Eventually the homegame broke up and all that was left was me, Kev and Neil......

go get em George.

If you like Chinese food, my favourite in the world is situated in Noodle Asia conveniently next to the Venetian card room :)

Fantastic recommedation Chili, I love this place.

George regarding internet. What I usually do is take my laptop and do write ups then put on memory stick along with photo's, every couple of days pop along to an internet cafe and post. Usually takes a few mins for about $5.

I am a fan of any food as you can imagine so look forward to dining in Vegas! Couple of questions:

1) I take it the dress code of casino's allow shorts, hoodies, trainers etc. What about clubs?

2) Exchanging dollars. Should I do this in Vegas. A couple of people tell me I can get a better rate abroad but I find that hard to believe. Is there any restrictions on the amount £/$ I can take over?

are you gonna stick a staking thread for some  tourneys (bellagio or wsop) up whilst ur in vegas??

pretty sure many ppl will be intrested.

I think, given that I was so close to Neil and some of the negativity I'm bound to face (I saw cdw's post- and I fully understand his point of view) it would be inappropriate for me to put a thread asking for backing. Ironically I was planning on putting up a staking thread the weekend just gone. I have sold some privately to some close friends on the circuit. I am very grateful for their support and really hope I can bink something to give them a nice return.

You can take more than 10k no problem, you just need to declare it on the way in. No problem if you do...............if you don't declare it they can take it off you.

And then there was 3.

Things had changed quite dramatically but I had my two best buds- Kev and Neil. We had always been close and continued to travel to tourneys together mainly APAT and Gala. I can't tell you how much fun we had touring. We took the piss like lads do and had a good time when out and about. Good times.

The home game had planned on going to Vegas last year during the series so me, Neil and Kev were determined to get out there. For one reason or another it didn't happen unfort and Neil ended up going out on his own. When he got back we came up with an idea to ensure it happened this year. Any tournament we played, rather then exchanging %'s we would put 25% in a group fund to be used to get to and play tourneys in Vegas. Again if we won a tournament with the funds used the pool would be replenished. It seemed like a great idea because I'm pretty tez and saving up.

Neil was the first to contribute a chunk when he came 4th at the Notts gala tour which Bramm took down. We had 1k in there fairly early. Kev was mainly min cashing local donkaments we were playing. I contribued the most (brag). I came 11th at the IPO (sigh), won the DTD deepstack, came 3rd in an online tilt tourney and then chopped a £100 tourney at gala. Shelley was pretty peeved to be honest! She said I was funding other poeple's trip. I pointed out to her that it could just as easily gone the other way- and besides I was happy as long as we got to go out there.

Neil held onto the funds. I have no idea where but I remember us asking him to put the share into the blonde fund. He was adamant he would be keeping it seperate which we couldn't understand why. Now we know. Here we go with some classic george2loose naivety. Kev and Neil had a joint account where they held onto the funds. Neil went to Miami and I thought nothing of the fact that Kev had the dough.

A week after Kev got back me and Neil received a message on facebook. Kev had used some of the funds to place bets on the horses and done the lot. I couldn't quite believe it- this money was to get me to Vegas and now it was gone.

Then there was two.... and we all know what happened to make it just me.

I met up with Kev and he was pretty upset. The difference here is I believe Kev made a genuine mistakke. The one good thing to come out of all this mess is that me and Kev have made our peace. Again people might think I'm being soft but I've never needed a mate so much before. Shelley has been brilliant through all this too but she didn't know Neil like me and Kev did (or thought). Kev has began paying me back in weekly installments and is getting as much money together as he can for me.

So my dream of going Vegas and winning big with my two best mates as turned into a sole expedition. Would be really nice if this story has a happy ending....

Hey George, looks like we'll be playing in same event (#54??).  I fly out on 29th and will be staying at Palazzo.  Seems mean to mention it given your recent financial shinanigins but this is courtesy of a prize package I won with 888.com for $5k.  I'll keep my eye open for you and hope to say hello and buy you a drink.  Good luck and have a great time.

Sorry, meant to add that Palazzo (part of Venetian) adds $17 per day for "resort fee" that covers internet, leisure centre, etc.  This is compulsory so worth checking with your hotel as you then won't need to worry about phaffing about in internet cafes and stuff.  Also some hotels have shuttles from the airport which can be a lot cheaper than a cab on your own.

Just been sent a confirmation of my seat and a list of FAQs (let me know if you want me to forward this to you).  They mention that you need a "Total Reward" card to play.  I presume this is their loyalty card and you can get one at the Rio.  Also don't forget you will need your passport to register for the tourney - it would be cr*p to have to queue up twice.  Gl, gl, gl.

Total reward card for joining the casino - i.e. just make sure you've joined the casino in advance of needing to register

I haven't seen any evidence anywhere to contradict that Harrah's will do anything different with the forms to what they did 3 years ago - that is they will take you through the whole thing and do all the work for you - you just need to read and sign and date what they tell you to. i.e. not something to worry about

Total reward card is the loyalty card for all of Harrah's casino's as Bally's is part of that chain you should be able to pick one up there when you check in to save any queue at the Rio.

Tax form can wait till you bink and the cashier will do all the work for you at the Rio but expect to hang around for about 3/4 hour as Americans love paperwork. I don't think they understand why they are filling in like a million forms but boy do they tackle it with a bloody passion.

Can i take my laptop out there- will it work with an adaptor or do I have to purchase one out there?

Sorry if this sounds like a Paul Ho post

Not sure if anyone's mentioned this already, but the Venetian has free wi-fi in it's public areas.  Quite handy to know if you spend any time in their card room!

Depends on how much a nit you want to be but if you take a taxi from or to the airport. Tell the taxi driver to not take you on the interstate, as they do you for an extra $15 this way. Alternatively the pure nit way to do is to take an airport shuttle which take 2/3 times as long but is $12 round trip as opposed to $40/50.

No, the airport shuttle is only the 'semi pro nit' way

Taking a bus is the 'pro nit' way

walking is pure nit ldo

George people are lying to you, get a cab from the airport its $20 max to ballys, he has no need to go strip or interstate he can just take paradise then flamingo and boom your at the side entrance.

Player rewards card signup is right next to the player registration so no worries about that and the tax form will be done for you so don't worry about that.

Taxi from ballys to the Rio is ~$10 so not much to worry about there either.

I might have missed what day you fly out in this thread but can you let me know again, cheers.

I've read elsewhere that the free shuttle buses have been cut back drastically - if they don't increase them then you might want to avoid the big queue and long waits.

Hey George,

Enjoy Vegas. I stayed at Ballys for three weeks in November it's fine. The cash games there are pretty soft, espeically if there's a convention in town wear headphones though as the live acts are usually pretty tilting. It takes about 10-15 minutes to walk to the Venetian, in November it was fine to walk it, the weather in June/July perhaps not. There are a few restaurants underneath Ballys that are fine if unspectacular. It's connected to Paris and their buffet is pretty good and there's a burger/sports bar where Pairs and Ballys meet that is good. Also there's a convenience store situated in the hotel that sells sandwiches, cereal, milk, toliteries etc. I think there's a shuttle bus to the Rio (they're both Harrahs properties) and 'm sure you've looked at a map of the strip, but it's easy to get to Caesars, Bellagio and of course O'Sheas for Beer Pong.

Have a fun trip mate.

G2L proves the adage, "cometh the hour, cometh the man". Proper class act him.

Looking back serves no good purpose, & making two disasters out of one makes no sense. Or in G2L's case, three out of two.

As everyone else has said, run well in Vegas, man. Karma is waiting for you.

Gl in vegas george.

You won't mind ballys, its kinda a mid stake hotel, not a venetian but no imperial neither, and its location actually means the hotel is reasonably quiet at times, esp compared to others.

In regards to the taxis from the airport they will def try and interstate it when they hear yr accent, its only another $15, so it all depends if u can be arsed to moan.

I used to but it tilted me so hard i just found it +ev to lose a tenner and chill.

Hope u bink large out here, think yr game will be suited to it, i fly back on the 29th so as the value leaves the class arrives!

Glglgl matey.

So I'm packed and ready to go. Can't sleep obv and am hoping to sleep for most of the journey. Is a bit weird travelling on my own and am feeling a little scared but am sure I'll be fine once on flight and once I land. Hoping I make it for a Trickett final table appearance but not sure whether i will make it in time.

They have internet access where you have to swipe the plastic in most hotel lobbies George.

IIRC it's around $1 per minute, a bit expensive but we're worth it :)

Bumped into George yesterday on Day 1A of #54. Over 200 tables and we are virtually next door to each other.  Only chance for a quick hello but he said his luck hadn't been great so far.  He made the first break but then I looked up and he was gone.  They very rarely move anyone as they are virtually continually breaking tables due to the carnage so I presume he went out.  Hope I'm wrong.  Was nice to meet you George and perhaps see you again on the circuit.

OK guys- big update. I'm typing from my  Vegas buddies John Spinks and JP's room who have room net access AND laptops which aren't broken- MBN.

Monday

The flight was pretty horrendous into Vegas- usually I sleep whenever I travel but turbulence and sitting in them middle seat in them middle isle gg'ed that. I land and queue up at immigration. I have only been to the US once before when me and the family went to Florida- the immigration officer informs me there's something up with my fingerprints so I end up waiting in the immigration office for 30 mins while everyone else leaves. I get a cab to my hotel and queue up for another 30 mins to check in. Travelling really does suck!

I snap get a cab to the rio after putting all my stuff in my room and play a 275$ 1 table satty which is a winner takes all but usually deals are done heads up. I lose a huge race 3 handed AQ vs 10 10 and effectivley bubble. Not the dream start I wanted! I play a 100$ donkament and lose when I squeeze 10 2 after a raise and two callers. I get SNAPPED by QJ and make my way back to the hotel for some sleep with a plan to play the 550$ tournament at the Venetian the next day.

Tuesday

Arrive at around 11.30 and buy in for the 550. My table is quite solid and I play a few hands early- nothing major happening until 100/200/25. Europeon oldish guy opens cut off to 550. i decide to 3 bet KQ off to 1600, my opponent flats. The flop comes K 10 3. Check check. 10 on the turn. Another check and I bet 2k he calls. A queen on the river and now he decides to lead for 4100. I sigh call and he turns over pocket queens. Nice one outer. I grind for the next two levels before squeezing sixes in the small blind for 20 bigs against a hijack open and a button call. Hijack has AQ and a Q on the turn sees me walking away from the table quite frustrated. I grind some cash at Ballys in the evening and lose another 600. I didn't play particularly well tbh- 1/2 tends to be very tight and I was probably guilty of playing too many pots.

Wednesday

First winning day on the trip- I played cash pretty much all day at the Venetian, 1/2 whilst JP and Spinks grinded 5/10. I made 750$ and played the best I have all trip. I also ran pretty well which also helps. Was nice to be getting some cards and hittng some flops. I had already bought in for the 1k tomorrow and couldn't wait for my first WSOP event!

Thursday

Get to the Rio about 11 and rail and eat some dinner whilst I'm waiting for the tourney to start. I'm feeling really good aftr the cash game yesterday. Lots of people complaining about the 3k stack but I quite like the structure. I get up to 6k at the first break. Playing really well and getting some pretty good starting hands. We come back after the break at 50/100 when the following hand occurs.

Cut off min raises to 200 and the button flats playing about 3.5k. I flat wit sixes and the big bind playing 5k now makes it 700. C/o folds, button flats so I decide to peel. Flop is 6,7,10 all spades. I lead for 1300, big blind shoves and button calls all in. Big blind has Kings with the Ks, button as AQ with the As. Cue the spade on the river and I'm down to dust. Get it in with 10 bigs with AQ vs 99 and again I'm out of another tourney.

I played the 340$ at the venetian today. Lost with AQdd on a Jd 10 6d board to 78 off when an off suit 7 hits the river. I then get it in with 20 bigs with two black kings vs two red queens. The flop is all clubs but the queen of spades on the river sums up my trip so far.

My bankroll is pretty battered right now and I'm running out of time to play the main event..... I'm going to play a super sat probably tomorrow so fingers crossed things change! On the plus side my dad and brother fly in today for a week so at least I'll have some drinks and good times with them.

next update hopefully a little sooner!

Nice update - and urg on the cards! I know you will be busting to play the main, but honestly if you dont you should really make the most of vegas and things it has to offer - especially the grand canyon - a 1/2 day trip is 1 buy in of 1-2 and so much more life equity!

I sincerely hope you bink a main seat

Today has officially been the greatest day of the trip so far.

After shipping the main event seat in the early hours Shelkley calls to wwake me aty 12.30. It's tough being away and I'm missing her and the kids like mad so we tuck each other in every night and speak every morning.

My Dad and bro arrived yesterday and have left to go shopping so I hook up with JP and Spinks for lunch. Allyou can eat at the mirage- nice life! We then spend the afternoon playing Chinese poker and PLO flips- JP runs the best.

The three of us meet up with my Dad and brother and all of us decide to play the 100$ donkament at the venentian for some light relief. The comp is a big buy in for my bro and my dad so they're taking it deadly seriously. JP and Spinks sure make the antes and I am playing loose and aggro for a chanbge. The run good has started- I won with 72 vs AK, 94 vs AQ, and virtually every flip. However I make an overplay on the bubble and end up min cashing for 250$- my first vegas cash in an mtt. Weeeeee!

However my Dad is the greatest- he chops the comp for a cool 3.4k!!!! He rran the final table- and played awesome- maybe there's a poker gene in the family???

Today has officially been the greatest day of the trip so far.

After shipping the main event seat in the early hours Shelkley calls to wwake me aty 12.30. It's tough being away and I'm missing her and the kids like mad so we tuck each other in every night and speak every morning.

My Dad and bro arrived yesterday and have left to go shopping so I hook up with JP and Spinks for lunch. Allyou can eat at the mirage- nice life! We then spend the afternoon playing Chinese poker and PLO flips- JP runs the best.

How long has your old man played George? Did you get him into it?

I recently taught my mum to play, she is a bit of a sicko now and plays every day, its quite scary.

My Dad is a traditional card player- probably played draw or something so knows the basics well. He has a very good poker instinct- watching the final was a pleasure!

Meeting them in 20 mins and then heading down to the Rio- doesn't seem real- very nervous. Day 2 one time pls!!!

OMG what a day- can't ever make things easy for myself. Got to 45k in no time (think tikay has reported the hand in another thread) but did a stupid bluff and folded for my life on the river. Was down to 7k so am delighted to be going through with 28k

My table was ridic tough considering the standard on the trip so far- here's to a better seat draw on Saturday! Gonna chioll for the next few days and see a few sights with as little poker as possible although may play at the Aria tomorrow- they have a 6 max PLO turbo running at 12!

Right. In the tank with Bedi. I think I played this hand like a retard and I'm sure you'll agree.

I'm 3rd to act and have a stack of 21k. We're playing 9 handed and I look down at  Ahrt 9h. I open to 700 at 150/300- I think this was my first mistake- the table was so tough I should have just mucked.

Mid position who is crazy aggro and guy who 3 bet 7s against me early (who has also rebuilt his stack) peels, small blind peels.

Board comes down  9s 6h 3d

Sb checks- I bet 1500. Mid position peels. Small blind now makes it 3800. I call- again this is a bad call- he's never checking the turn and with my stack I'm just asking for trouble. MP folds (he says later he had queens which I don't believe cos he was 3 betting for fun)

Turn is the  Kh. So now I have middle pair with the nut flush draw. SB bets 5.5k. I call.

River is  Kc. He now bets 12k. I have 12.5 left. His hand feels like a set/98 on the flop. The boiard is so dry I'm wondering whether he would raise the flop or try and get some value on later streets. J10 keeps running thru my mind and I tank so hard- longest I have ever taken over a decision in poker and eventually decide that with 40 bigs I can grind it back. I am still not sure whether it was the right muck. Later he tells me he had a set of 9s..... hmmmmmmmmmmm

I probably play it the same as you down all the streets George.  Any other comp, I think I call the river, but in the wsop ME I probably do the same as you - sigh fold like a girl and grind.

edit: just re-read the hand again - hadn't picked up that the sb had checked raised the flop. probably fold at that point, but otherwise the same.

Post by: BulldozerD on July 07, 2010, 06:47:13 PM
i'm not liking the flop raise by SB after a c/bet and a caller in between, looks really strong to me and looks like its begging for value on a dry board. Probably fold flop due to guy still behind me and bad relative position on future streets

That just sounds like one of those hands where the little voice in your head is telling you that you shouldn't be doing this every step of the way but you just kinda get hooked in.

I can now understand how hard it was to talk yourself out of going all the way with it.

SB's c/r looks like it wants a caller. So does his turn bet - he def has a set here.

Took Woodsey's advice and played some dice yesterday and if I go broke I blame him. It's a pretty saddictive game and I can see why poker degens are attracted to it. My first roll was obv the roll of my life. I didn't crap out for 40 mins and there must have been 3k on the layout on a 5$ min table. I made around 500$ and some guy walked away with 3.5 after starting with 200.

Going to see a show at the bellagio tonight and madam tussauds this afternoon

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Dont feel low buddy. I know that missing family is super tough, but remember that they all want you to be there enjoying this life experience!

Definately time to take a day off the gambling/poker. I really recommend a half day trip to the grand canyon by helicpoter. You have alll been binking, just splash out - i think its about $350 each from memory. I went with Sundance and they were pretty good!

For food pleasures - i recommend the Earl of Sanwich @ planet hollywod for a quick bite.

Go to the top of the eiffel tower at night and watch the bellagio fountains

hope the blues clear soon dude

Enjoy

something I do every time I go is the helicopter night flight over the strip - it never gets old , will cost you about $70 and they will put you in with other tourists if ur on your own.

your in the air for around 15 mins ( i think - feels like 5 mins tho) , but the view of the strip at night is breathtaking.

I also recommend sundance if you decide to do the canyon.

I wish you the very best of luck at the tables
