Title: **Technolog's blonde Walking Club**
Post by: Laxie on September 28, 2010, 08:11:55 PM
As the title suggests.  He's looking to shed a few and loves to go for long walks.  Willing to travel to special destinations for full days of it.  Wouldn't catch me doing it, but there ya go.

Anyone else out there into walking for miles to keep fit?  Give a shout here and ye can start a blonde walking club.

He'll be on in a bit to 'splain further as it's miles out of my league.

Happy walking folks!!!

Spare a thought for those Blonde members that have ruptured ligaments getting out of bed recently, I am sure they dream of joining a walking club.

When will these poker players learn to take it easy  ;whistle; rotflmfao

5 miles ffs? I was thinking a nice steady 15 or so.

Cows are fine. It's the ones with the bowls in a leather bag yer gorra watch. Had a contretemps with a fella the other day who didn't think I ought to be walking through his field. Which was interesting.

As yer picking up new walking partners on this gig, might be no harm to allow for beginners and start with a less frightening distance.  5 miles might not frighten them as much as...ohhhhhh, I dunno...walking across an entire county!

The 1066 country walk is a nice walk - http://www.walkingpages.co.uk/trails_paths/ldp1066walk.htm

Two walks really though, 25 km ish each though. Only one field with cows in though IIRC.

What I actually said to Dawn was 'do you know anyone on blonde who enjoys walking?'. I kid you not, this thread appeared 2 mins later. Marv.

Right, now I've been outted as a saddo (again), I'm going to be doing the Coast to Coast walk sometime next year. I imagine most of you have heard of it; it's around a 200 mile stroll from St Bees in the west to Robin Hood's Bay in the east, taking in the Lake District, Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors.

My erstwhile walking partner has already done it so I was thinking of doing it on my own. But, if there's one or two others interested it might make for good craic.

I was thinking of doing it in two weeks and three weekends, perhaps with one or two rest days thrown in along the way. That would make a daily average of about 14 miles. Would be stopping in b&bs, hostels etc.

I had next August pencilled in but might need to wait for season 5 APAT to be announced before a final decision.

Would be okay with a few pints along the way but wouldn't wanna be necking more than about 4 or 5 before a day's walking.

If there's any interest give me a shout on here or, if you don't want to be outted, PM me.

Cheers Dawn :)

You'll need training for that.  Wee walks with the likes of Claire work perfect in the run up...as long as ya swerve the moo cows.

Yer doing great Lads.  Carry on.

Yeah I'd be happy enough to do a tiddler. To make it worthwhile with the likely travelling involved though, might be nice to combine with a night out on the lash & a hotel/b&b?

Appreciated Jack,

Been poring over this site http://www.coast2coast.co.uk/ which can be used to plan walks/accommodation and the likes (for Mantis)

What's your thoughts on the occassional night under canvas? If I were doing this myself I'd have opted for 1 night in 3 taking accommodation and full shower/bath thingy. That said, am not sure what the rules are for pitching up in the area.

Still waiting on Red Dog chirping in  ;)

Although quite a bit away, can almost say for deffo I'd be in

The last time I camped <insert joke here> it was in a mate's back garden aged 13 (the night Elvis Presley died interestingly enough) but wtf I'm up for anything!

I've been thinking about doing a spot of wild camping actually so I'd be keen to give it a go. Unfortunately, unlike Scotland, you can't just pitch your tent anywhere (the exception being Exmoor I believe Dartmoor) and we'd need to either use campsites or get permission from land owners. Of course, if we are in the middle of nowhere, we could probably safely flout the rules and pitch up anywhere so long as we remove all trace. We've got enough time to get it arranged anyway.

As I say, I'm a complete novice when it comes to camping and you'll need to educate me - the tent peg mallet may come in handy here.

So me and Geo are tentatively (all subject to change) planning to do the Coast to Coast next August/September combining wild-camping & b&bs in a roughly 2 night to 1 ratio. If anyone else is interested we could perhaps manage 1 or at a maximum, 2 other companions. Anyone else interested?

Doesn't seem to be much other interest on here for a walk (surprisingly ;D). I'll put a post on the APAT forum to see if anyone wants to join us.

Generally liking this Geo.

I deffo want to stop with Doreen - heard great reports from a mate who's been.

I was thinking meet on a Friday too (I can finish early from work and get a train and be in St Bees for about 7pm).

I'd like to have a day off in the middle - perhaps Richmond so there'd be something to do? How do you feel about this? We'd be able to have a few the night we arrive in Richmond and when we finish :)

Either finish walking on Saturday & travel back Sunday or, if the Monday is a Bank Holiday (or I've got enough holiday), finish walking Sunday travel back Monday (although trains might be problematic on a Bank Holiday).

That would be either 14, 15 or 16 days walking depending when we finish and whether we take a 1 day break.

Have played about with it, giving us a two night stopover at Richmond. I marked in Doreens Place at Keld but can you find out the name of the place?

The Old School at Danby Wiske has a lot of really good reviews and is run by someone called Doreen. Need to check if this is her place as I would be removing Daby Wiske as a stop over if taking a 2 day break at Richmond.

PM me your email addy and we can pass the sheet back n forth with any amendments/suggestions.

Geo

BTW, I've booked this period off already as it's usually a difficult time for us to get hols, but I do have a wee bit leeway.

Now is your Luton piss-up a closed shop?

No, you'd be very welcome.  Stick  your name down here and that'll have the added bonus of bumping it back on to the front page ;D

Make it cycling instead of walking, 3 days instead of a fortnight, and I'm in.

Off for a stroll from home to Bradgate Park and back tomorrow. I might treat myself to a coffee at the Tea Room at Newtown Linford. Should be about 18 miles. If the forecast is right, it ought to be quite pleasant.

Back for some Heineken Cup rugby then the APAT league game.

Tom, would you like to join the Notts team? It'd be great to have you.

I'm at DTD tomorrow  ;cheerleader;

I'm planning to do this is the spring....

I'm a bit worried about the navigating though.

That looks like a tester. Are you doing it on your own or with your good lady? Do you think you'll do it in 12 hours or less?

I'm not great at navigating - I can read a map well enough to follow a footpath (in Leicestershire which must be one of the best counties for way-marking footpaths). I have a GPS I use to tell me the mileage and if I'm in doubt, it tells me where I am to the nearest few metres.

I'm hoping Geo's going to teach me the art when we're trekking across the north of England next year.

Actually, I know the 'mechanics' of it, but until I actually see it applied in a practical situation, I'm struggling to 'get it'.

Oh, and if you're back from DTD before 8pm it'd be great to have you join us :) (God loves a tryer). The info you need is in the links in my signature.

But good luck at Nottingham.

I'm doing it with my son-in -law and my nephew.

I have the body of a Greek God, and I'm as wick as a woodlouse, but they have a tendency to become a bit porky if they don't have anything to train for.

Last year we did a 100 mile bike ride, and my nephew ate 20+ bread rolls with various fillings along the way.

That was a toughy!

I think my fitness level has dropped a tad from what it was.

I set off just before 9 and got to Bradgate Park about 2 hours later. I headed off up the park hill and made it to the war memorial without stopping.

I only stopped then because I was hoping to get some photos of the memorial. Unfortunately it looks like my new camera has got to be returned as, more often than not, it had a purple cast straight from switch-on. Occasionally it would switch on and be fine - I got a few photos but not many.

It's a lovely park with views over the city. It's populated with deer - I manage to get a pic of a stag chewing the cud (if deer do such a thing!?). The only problem is that half of Leicestershire rock up there at the weekend!

I got there about half an hour too early. The mist & clouds cleared away and the views improved accordingly.

When I got back down, I treated myself to a large latte in the tea rooms, whilst managing to resist temptation in the form of some spectacular looking cakeage!

The sun was out for the whole of the return leg and was surprisingly warm.

I got back home just before 3, making the 17½ mile trip in a fraction over 6 hours.
