Title: Frozen pipes
Post by: cia260895 on December 04, 2010, 09:34:29 PM
during this cold spell some of you might experience some of your pipes/taps freezing.
Should you be unfortunate to have this happen to you don't panic as it can be relatively easy to sort out.
First locate the main stop cock or isolating valve
Keep the water supply on with the taps turned on so you'll know when the freeze has defrosted
depending on the location of the freeze the best way to unfreeze the pipe/tap (as outside taps are the weakest point in the system) is to gently heat the area with a fan heater or hairdryer ,NEVER apply direct heat via a blow torch as the sudden increase in temperature can lead to a burst pipe or split fitting.

Flooding occurs when the frozen plug of water expands and ruptures the pipe/fitting,but until the plug defrosts the water remains inside the pipe so if you have an empty property isolate and drain the system.

 ;goodluck;
