The GUKPT is back, and so are the blonde live updates. Temporarily maybe, but we'll see


The GUKPT Manchester Main Event starts tomorrow and kicks off the 2011 GUKPT Series

It is a £1000+70 NLHE with 15,000 starting chips and a One hour clock, played over two starting days and four days total

Two years ago, in one of the more famous blonde updates on the site, the event was won by the Moorman that can play live poker, Simon Moorman. Father of Chris, and bought into the event as a birthday present by his son.

Last year blonde was not at the event, and it was won by local player Kuljinder Sidhu who beat Chris Brammer to the title

Play begins at midday Thursday

Updating at Manchester will be myself for Thursday and part of Friday and Caroline "mouth" Cove for all four days

I don't know Caroline very well, but this update is only taking place because she has volunteered to do it. For that, thank you to her very much. Obviously we can't do updates like this relying on people's goodwill for too long, but as I said above we'd like updates on the site so we'll do this and see how it goes.

The GUKPT itself has undergone a bit of a facelift for 2011

Barry "DaveShoelace" Carter critiqued the changes on UK Poker news when they were announced

"....which featured a variety of new added value promotions, the removal of their end of year Champion of Champions event and most notably less legs of the tour. Last year the PokerStars UKIPT arrived on the scene and captured the attention of the UK market, no doubt leaving the GUKPT with a lot to think about, so how have they responded?

New Champion of Champions Tournaments
At first I didn’t like this, because I see the Champion of Champions event as a huge event on the UK calendar, but the last two years it hasn't quite lived up to that, it hasn't been as special as I made it in my head. So I don’t mind this now and could imagine there will be some value in the form of some of the bigger players might not even bother to play.

Wild card entries:
I love this idea, great extra value for those of us who have no chance of taking down a GUKPT event the proper way and will no doubt be very popular. The only criticism is that this innovation would have been way more exciting had the Champion of Champions event stuck to the original end of the year format.

Bumper GUKPT Leaderboard:
Another reason for the pros to stick with the tour, there seemed to be much more interest in the leader board last year than the Champions event, so a natural progression in my opinion.

Shoal Survivor:
Finally. One of the major criticisms of the tour was that it didn’t capture the online qualifier market as well as they could have. You only had to look at the PokerStars UK & Ireland Poker Tour to see how important this is. There probably needs to be even more involvement with online qualifiers, but this is a step in the right direction.

Grosvenor Poker League & Sharky Giveaways:
Good to see £100,000 being on the table for the live poker regulars of the G Casinos and generally more of a shift to encourage live poker. The last few years the GUKPT main events have been incredibly tough and pro saturated, hopefully this will balance them a little and get more locals involved.

Less Legs:
Some people are pointing to this as a sign the tour is suffering at the hands of PokerStars and a saturated live poker market, I just think it makes sense. There are so many live events in the UK now, which is fantastic for the industry and players in general, and the GUKPT needed to reduce their schedule to make the events they do have special again.

All in all, the GUKPT seems to have had a major facelift and they are taking a risk by changing the format as much as they have, but it’s a necessary risk. Previously you could argue that the added value was very pro heavy, but this seems like a balanced mix of added value for professionals, live player and online qualifiers alike, which is exactly what they need to do if they want to try and reassert themselves as the poker tour in the UK.

First man down on table 2, S. Hussain, lost with aces to Will Fry who hit trip 2s.

Andy Bradshaw has just sat down as an alternate on the same table, so when I heard "lost one" I assumed it was Andy, but no, he's still there.

 Andy got in a hand with Will Fry while I was at the table, lots of raising on a raggy flop and turn, board paired on river and Will took it down with a 3/4 pot bet. Then showed Ace high, which was actually the winning hand, knowing Andy's usual range.

Players on a 30 minute break.  Should give the guys time to sort their tech problems.

Another one gone, Paul rayner with AJ on a J high board. Lost to J3 held by James Reid in early position. Not sure what actually went on but clearly the best hand won.


Break time now, half an hour.

70 players in total so far today, 67 left, Blinds up 100/200 25 ante next level.

Tighty has lost the will to live.

This looking unlikely. For some reason the connection can only be picked up by 50% of the laptops here, which is great for me as I am one of the chosen few. GUKPT bloggers are crying.

Tighty says GUKPT has moved into 2011 at the forefront of media reporting which represents clear progress from the days of abacuses and carrier pigeons. Possibly.

So I've already mentioned the odd atmosphere today. We're up to 70 runners as level 4  starts, with alternates allowed for another hour


The casino is somnolent. The players are comtaose


The make up of the field is also interesting. With the Aussie Millions taking away a number of the young bucks and the EPT a load of the top end of the buy in market today's field is like a festival event from 2006. Long term live Pros, and locals.

I gather Jake Cody is playing tomorrow though. Sadly for him he has missed sharing a table with Andy Bradshaw. Until Saturday.

And now they've extended the alternates for another level ?

But are still being blinded down.  How is this going down with the players Rich ?  How many dead stacks are there ?

Spoke to Zac the TD, and it is a new thing this year.

"When its busy its better to put the stacks in at the start, rather than the old way where you can come in after 50 minutes and post a small and big blind and only lose 75 chips. If the alternates do not show up, the stacks are then removed from play"

Only its not busy today, but lets give it time under different conditions.

To be fair not many complaints from the players, Karl apart. Probably because a lot of these won't be thinking about it

Most of the tables seem to have stopped playing around 1pm today.

Only a handful of players involved in flops, mainly on Will Fry and Jeff Kimber's table.

Harry Zammits table seems to be limping in to a load of flops mainly being taken down in turn by two chinese lads. One of them, Le Cong mistakenly seems to think the Tv camera is pointed at him. Currently playing around one hand to every 94 on other tables.

Yesterday Karl Mchappymeal was playing 3 handed for ages due to the alternate stacks being in play, sans players. Andy Brads tilted from the moment he sat down when he bought in as alternate to find he'd lost a chunk instead of the customary small & big blind.

Today, less alternate stacks in play, and when the alternates buy in they now post a small & big blind only, regardless of what time they come in.

Obviously it's good for today's players, but is it fair on yesterday's runners?

Have dinner ready. Plan ahead, even the night before, to have a delicious meal ready on time for his return. James Williams just shoved his 17k in with AK and was called by QQ, didnt improve, now getting a pep talk from Tikay.


Kristian Thornley was looking like chip leader with about 90k, but Redmond Lee has just doubled up with a set of 5s to give him now nearly 90k as well.

55 players left now, av chips 37k, probably not much more than half an hour's play left now, by the time they draw the card fro how many hands to finish.

Went to take a pic of Jake Cody after his double up from Trigg before the break, only to see an empty seat. He's busted - called a shove for 20k + from the SB after raising with a9, sb had 9 10 and hit a 10 on river, then got the remainder in with 99 v JJ and didnt improve.

Cougar totty count dropped dramatically since Williams & cody have busted.
