Title: Transfer Window - Deadline Day
Post by: kinboshi on January 31, 2011, 09:26:20 AM
Thought I'd start this thread so we can keep all the comings and goings in one thread (mainly).

Obviously lots of attention on Liverpool/Chelsea, but also Spurs very busy in trying to get some new signings.  Also rumours that every taxi driver in the country has picked up one player or another from an airport and is taking them to one of the clubs around the country.

Nottingham Forest's quest for a full-back is over. They have signed Paul Konchesky on loan from Liverpool.

Do wonder about the betting

Tim at Sky Bet:

Odds on Andy Carroll joining Liverpool slashed to 1/5 following a flurry of bets with Fernando Torres now 4/11 to leave. New Sky Sports customers can claim a completely free £5 bet - click here.

Comes in 10 mins after the £30m bid is rejected.

Not so stupidly of Sky Bet, you can't bet on him staying at Newcastle.  If £30m isn't enough to sell him, I can't see him going anywhere else, £30m is way too much.

@iainmacintosh If Carroll reaches potential, then £30m is fair. Sadly, it's more likely that he'll wind up in a hot tub full of Blue WKD with Kerry Katona.

Logic being he has scored goals at a good rate thi season, and played well, 6-8 more goals in the last 12-15 games from him keeps them in the Prem comforatble, thus making them a wedge.  I think.

...and with £25-30M, he's irreplaceable?  Of course, if they can't sign anyone in time, the money's useless - but if they can get someone in time he's worth what it costs to replace him?

For Liverpool it could be argued that he's worth £25M - we have Suarez (assuming that's done and dusted and Torres leaves as expected) and not much else to offer up front.  Liverpool need another quality forward in this transfer window.

sigh, such a waste. a real quality left midfielder going to yet another club to play left back where he's completerly ineffective. worst thing that could've happened to him getting capped as a defender

i know what you mean about value to newcastle  but surely with 30 points bagged and 15 games to go they will be fine? They have an OK team

Id sell in a heart beat for $30m - he is by no means a proven player of £30m category - he has really bad personality tendancies - seeems like more of a duncan ferguson than a wayne rooney imo

@danroan Torres is not a done deal. Not yet. I promise.

I still think it's a matter of when, rather than if though.

Thankfully, H&G aren't still the owners - if they were, the £50M (or whatever it is) would vanish into their pockets and Carlton Cole would be our target.

Torres deal done bar finalising image rights (@danroan - BBC).  £175K a week his reported salary.

He left Melwood in an Audi (I think they make cars, not helicopters).

Torres and Drogba up front - would not like to be a defender facing that pair.

Please let liverpool pay £35m for carrol!

Is there a likelihood that Liverpool are just trying to back to back these deals? Therefore there is a possibility Torres won't go if the carrol deal can't be agreed?

How long does a medical take?

Would a club buy an injured player and is that injury their risk?

Newcastle need to stay in the PL. Our league placing is good, and barring complete disaster we should be safe this season. But what about next season? We want to build a team. Yeah, £30m is obv a lot, but what's the point of selling your best players. Also, our squad is thin enough as it is. We'd really struggle if we got another couple of strikers injured.

I also like it in the sense that the "top 4" think they can just throw money around to get whoever they want. GTFO.

There can't be many bigger fans of Carroll's game than me, but that sort of money just can't be rejected. He'd have to be getting us into the CL single handedly to warrent rejecting that. Given his off field antics and this worrying thigh problem that only adds more weight to the decision. Think him handing in the request is, one, to speed it up but two; probably requested by the club to avoid the need to make a compensation payment and take some heat off them (not that I think there really can be any heat to put on for the decision).

It will be really interesting to see if he does go on to make the most of what he could have in front of him.

For us I hope that the money can be put back into the team wisely in the summer.

Worth considering the saving on wages with Carroll.  He's on £27K at Newcastle, so he'll be on a fair chunk more at Liverpool - but far less than Torres was.

Add to that he's only 22, and therefore has a resale value.

That said, it's a lot of cash!

God, please let me get the other side of that.

If he signs, will go straight into the team v Liverpool? Somehow think they would give a less high profile debut.

And even if he signs and plays, 6/4 is very skinny.

35m for Andy Carroll seems absolutely absurd.

But then swapping Torres for 2 younger quality strikers in Suarez and Carroll seems decent.

Maybe 28m would be okay.

Newcastle fans must be doing the conga up there.

They can stay up this year from here with Ameobi playing in his possie then in the summer they will have £35m!!! to build and massively improve like 4/5 areas of the team.

I know they will say yea but Ashley might not re-invest most of it, but with you doing so well and being established in the Prem by the summer i'm sure he will.

Well, as a Liverpool fan, this window has gone far better than I'd thought it would.  Resigned to losing Torres, it didn't look great.  Suarez softened the blow, but getting Carroll as well means we have more than one option up front - and both young so lots of potential to create a good partnership.

The fee seems huge, and I guess it is a gamble from the owners.  Makes a difference from the previous owners.

I love the Andy Reid signing by Holloway. Perfect replacement for Adam I reckon.

????

Totally different type of player...left winger for a CM.

That said it gives us better options for switching to 4-4-2; also if he can start dropping balls on Beatties head like he did with Bent/Jones at Sunderland last season (? or maybe year b4) then I'll be a happy man :-)

reid is one of the best I've ever seen in central midfield though will probs go on the left now if adam's staying

Looking like we have kept hold of Charlie. We'll sell at auction in the summer :-)

Made official now...my mate (works for the club) was texting me when all the SSN rubbish about taxi's was on and said he was in the same room!!!

I think they missed a beat with not selling Adam.  Not sure about the auction in the summer.  Won't he have 1 year left on his contract in the summer? (Not sure)
Can't see his value will be any higher in the summer, the bigger clubs will have a chance to scout out cheaper options elsewhere, no need for panic buys or to be held hostage over price.

Diouf gtfo finally.  I thought only Big Sam signed him.

Beattie has been pretty useless this season.  To be fair, he joined just before the 1st game of the season and apparently wasnt fit and got a couple of injuries, so he was never fully fit....but usually you can see glimpses from players not match fit that they will contribute when they are fit, Beattie showed absolutely nothing.  Comparable in uselessness to Franny Jeffers stint at Rangers.

FWIW I wouldn't have wanted us to sell Carroll for less than 30 million. 30mill was a tough decision, 35 I would have sold him as well. Interesting to hear that Carroll didn't seem to want to go but did want his contract renewed yesterday, the board said he had to wait until the summer so he asked to speak to Liverpool, this is according to Pardew. Carroll supposedly sent multiple txts to the editor of a fans magazine who Carroll is friends with, saying he's being pushed out and he's gutted to leave. The txts will be published in the magazine. Has it not been announced when he will do a press conference ? Interested to hear what he has to say about it all.

Yeah some extracts of emails from him have been discussed in the press. him saying he was forced out sounds like a PR excersise in the same way that Ashley saying that he wanted to leave is.

Carroll wanted more cash (after he'd just signed a new contract), Ashley realised they would never get such a ridic offer again...job done.

The rest is all spin from both parties.

I'm just saying what has been said by both parties. I think Carroll thought quadrupling his wages was too good an offer to refuse so left. I haven't thought about it long enough to have my own opinion yet. I don't blame Carroll for going though and I don't blame Ashley for selling.
