Title: Re: DTD Monte Carlo £250,000 GTD Final Day
Post by: TightEnd on April 17, 2011, 11:03:09 AM
so our final 20 for the Monte Carlo. Who are they?

Julian Thew     23     6     958000

EPT winner, Twice GUKPT winner and Nottingham's own, Julian came off the better from a several hour battle with Tobty Lewis yesterday that concluded with Julian knocking Toby out, moving to the head of the chip counts and staying there. One of the nicest men in poker, though that copybook was blotted when he dropped a swearword on a blonde thread recently. This lead to Poker Stars dropping him as a UK pro. Karma then bit, as the DOJ threw the book at Stars.

Sunny Chattha    21    8    869000

Another very friendly guy, GUKPT winner and part of the renowned and successful Hit Squad. Been off my radar for a year or so but is back with a bang here, having been a chip leader since early Day 2. Superb player, great instincts, and really interesting to watch.

Waheed Ashraf    22    2    859000

Winner of the inaugural DTD Monte Carlo at the back end of 2009, Nottingham Tournament legend Wadey has been playing superb stuff. This is by his own admission but seriously, he has. Would be a very popular winner, especially with the detritus of the Nottingham poker underworld, who have their nipping strategies in place already.

Nicolas Mclellan    23    8    689000

4th in the 2009 GUKPT Manchester, his local event.

Laurence Houghton    23    1    633000

Online major winner rivermanl has long threatened to translate that to the live scene and he has two GUKPT final tables, and here he is knocking on the door again. Railed by vociferous friends, and hasn't taken a backward step against the likes of Thew for several levels

Sunil Mistri    22    4    567000

Northampton's Sunny Mistri is co-owner of What's On Poker. Winner of the Aspers Northampton festival recently and his battles with Ashraf yesterday were superb

Michael Fisher    22    6    549000

Online qualifying regular DTD tournament player, mixing it with the big boys

Fraser Bellamy    22    7    468000

Winner of the last Monte Carlo event and a DTD Deepstack before that. On low live volume Fraser has a wonderful record of success.

James Reid    22    5    397000

Bedford's Jim Reid has been a fixture on the UK festival scene for many years. Aggressive, and this can tend to spewy but there were no signs of that yesterday as he played solid poker. A fixture on the highish cash games on Stars, a result today is certainly overdue

Richard Grace    23    7    395000

New Zealander, with an understated table style. Brilliant THM database entry. More flags than outside the UN.

Jen-yue Chiang    21    7    307000

Haven't heard him say a word at the table for three days. Going for a fourth day, a record in poker, of monastic verbal denial today.

Danny Ball    21    5    293000

Another friendly guy. Don't know Danny really, apart from him seeming to knock around with the likes of Perrins. On blonde as danny b.

Louise Duffy    21    1    272000

London based lady player who made the final two tables of GUKPT London. Google tell me "Ambition: To get a big result this year. Have already qualified for Ladbrokes poker cruise main event and European Ladies Championships in May, and am going to start trying to qualify for the EPT events. Qualified for the WSOP main event last year"

Richie Allen    23    3    265000

Brash and ballsy London cheeky chappie who was chip leader after 1b. In a lot of pots, talks through the rest of them

John Eames    21    3    258000

Successful online and a successful transition to a predominantly live player with 3rd i n EPT Copenhagen and an EPT Vienna side event winner. Consistent with a rocky reputation. Well overdue a huge live title as the talent is there for all to see

Scott Montgomery    22    1    227000

Canadian Scott travelled to Nottingham with partner Annette Obrestad who is playing the big game. WSOP Event 36 winner last year and 5th in the WSOP 2008 final table, knocked out by eventual winner Peter Eastgate. A Full Tilt Pro.

Thomas Macdonald    22    8    215000

Another Online success story, Tom from Leeds has never been at the head of affairs here but is in there fighting. Finalist at GUKPT Walsall last year and winner of GCBPT Leeds in 2009.

David Dean    23    5    206000

Dixie is a London tournament and cash game veteran. Tallest poker player you will ever meet, and with a big build, he towers over the table with a  physical presence. Gentle giant in person,a n aggressive terror on the table

Adam Wilkinson    21    6    183000

Festival staple fixture over many years, Adam was chip leader mid way through Day 2. GUKPT Newcastle finalist in 2007

Keiron Duncan    21    9    108000

Staying in the same bed and breakfast as me. £25 a night. Got to mind those expenses.

Now that, ladies and gentlemen of the good ship blonde, is a line up of our dreams

Please join me at 2pm for the action

Fraser Bellamy has lost 200,000 or so to Mark Fisher, which I missed

Fisher then won a nice pot blind on blind against Jim Reid, raising the turn of 2-2-Q-4 and getting a fold

Jen Chiang has floated Danny Ball succcessfully, calling a turn bet on 9-9-J-Q with 8-7 and getting there on a 10 river

Richie Allen 3 bet shoves over Richard Grace, who folds

Grace 3 bets Thew and gets it through

Laurence Houghton has arrived

It's all go

Meanwhile in this event 19 left and the average stack is 40x bb

Quite cagey, and not many stacks under a lot of pressure

Estimated finish time is midnight! Level 28

Julian Wadey and Sunny C the chip leaders

Newly enamoured of chips Duncan raises to 25,000

Eames 125,000 on the button

Duncan folds

Eames has basically doubled up today to 500,000 without showing a hand

Wadey Ashraf 1,000,000. Every 5 minutes he asks me if he is the chip leader. Every 10 minutes his supporters ask me if he is the chip leader.

Laurence Houghton raises

Richie Allen shoves the button

Dixie Dean passes in the big blind saying "I think he is going to pass though, he's your mate"

Laurence calls  Jd Jh

Allen  Aspades Ts

Jacks hold and Richie Allen is out 19th

It kicks off after, with Allen asking me to post that Dean had accused he and Houghton of Collusion

Dean vehemently denies this, finger pointing, jabbing, TD stepping in

Anyway, down to 18 and money jump to £2,775

Fingers crossed for the boy Thew, Surely Stars loss(big imo) is someone elses gain.....

Come on Jules TID!!!

I hadn't realised that Stars dropped Julian.  Why did that happen?  He is a great guy and amazing ambassador for UK poker imho.

Terrible decision imo, Happened just before UKIPT Nottingham i think.

To be fair, they never "dropped him", he had a 1 year deal, it ran it's course, & it was not renewed. It had not exactly gone well for either party, but there was no bad blood.

Would love to see him get top 3 in this, but that goes for most of the Finalists, all of whom have had to make some well brave moves & calls, way beyond nits like me could ever dream of.

Been an absolutely terrific Event from the very off, & a great Update, too, I've been unable to tear myself away from it. Well done to the players, to Tighty, to DTD, & to the Live Update Sponsor, "www.mycardshark.com".

Some evening in prospect, too, & I won't be able to follow it, bugger.

Go on Sunny, take this baby down, playing well and running well, great combination. He's played once since the WSOP main event, Walsall coz it was the one he'd won two years earlier, which was Feb or Mar last year, so about 14 months, what diff.

Great updates Rich, got me through my nephew's christening on my iphone, now can follow at home all the way to the win!!

Louise Duffy 100,000 in the cut off

Tom McDOnald 280,000 on the button

Duffy calls

 Aspades 5s 3c

Duffy check

McDonald 200,000

Duffy dwell fold

Someone is going to have to shove the lot into McDonald's face soon (metaphorically), the merciless aggression appears to be a real pain to play against

nth level spot IMO. Is he cold 4b jamming because it can never be a bluff with his image? He obv knows he has to have AA/KK/QQ to jam there, maybe utilising. Table is very aggro so can get that through alot. Still a fold IMO, just adding that to discussion lol. Just depends what level you wanna look at it from

Before Nick McLellan went out did he lose a big pot or was it a succession of smaller pots. From the updates (quality updates they are) Nick had 2.7m and then a short while later pushed for 800k?

Chattha raises the button

Mcdonald calls big blind

flop  Qs Qh 2h

McDonald check calls 100,000

turn  7c

McDonald check calls 250,000

river  3d

McDonald check calls 500,000

The pot represents over half his stack

Chattha "ten high"

McDonald nonchalantly rolls over  Ac 9d to win the 1.9m chip pot with no pair!

So a succession of small/medium pots

When I was sat next to JP Kelly in Manchester (brag) he told me Tom is one of the best players he knows. He just cba to usually travel anywhere (think Toby, JP and Tom have a house together)
many of the interviews perrins cody lewis eames et al mention tom as a guy who they rate highly. started out at naps in hull and i dont think thet realised what hit em. danny rudd came through this cardroom in £5 £10 re buys too

i don't remember Tom playing there too?  ;carlocitrone;

awesome reporting from what seemed a cracking final.

Looks like the best 3 players made the final 3.

I know he's a hero to many so am prepared for a bit of flamage, but am I the only one who think that Julian sold himself a bit short with that deal??

Or has he been round the block so long that his ego is strong enough to take a hit on the ICM chop?

Top dealing from Tom though

he has no edge
he was only CL due to the last elimination
def not - most sensible deal ive seen in a long time

It's all been said, many times, but I feel I must say it again - what an impressive Updating marathon by Tighty. Solo, too, which many Updaters say can't be done, but our man delivered.

Good balance, too, between colour, & hands, with plenty of both, leaning towards colour, as most blondes readers prefer that, which was as good as I've ever seen.

The "Round with Tighty" featuring Cos was one of the best Posts ever on blonde, requiring penetrating observational skills & the ability to write it up just so, not piss-taking, but deffo full of gentle rub, which I'm sure Cos would have enjoyed, such was it's quality & humour.

The blondes kept it mostly cool, too, credit to them, to do otherwise would have been an insult to Tighty.

Finally, big thanks to the people who financed the Update, "www.mycardshark.com", if the blondes now walk the walk, maybe we can get them to do it again in the future.

Oh, & well done Thewy. Like. Plus some.

Nottingham’s own legend Julian Thew takes the Monte Carlo title as he wins the £291,000 event!

Outside the traditional slot of December, our third £1000 Monte Carlo Event comes to a close. Simon Trumper reports on the weekend’s success.

With a guaranteed £250,000 prizepool, £50K higher than that in December, we finally ended up with 291 players, which produced a £90,000 first prize. As usual, our Monte Carlo attracted some fine tournament poker players, some of which included James "Flushy" Dempsey, Stuart Fox, James Mitchell, Toby Lewis, Jack Ellwood, Jake Cody, Jon Kalmar, Julian Thew and Devilfish.

104 players started Day 1A and 187 Day 1B. After 10 1-hour levels in both, 107 returned for Day 2, playing down to the last 20, who then returned for the final on Sunday.  Players on Day 3 included local champion (and chip leader) Julian Thew, winner of 2 GUKPT's and an EPT. Also still in play were both previous Monte Carlo winners Waheed Ashraf and Fraser Bellamy.

Incredibly, by the time we reached the final 9 both previous champions were still in with a chance of achieving their second title. Sadly it wasn't to be Fraser’s. His run of four finals four wins, came to an end after flopping a set and getting outdrawn. Fraser finished in 8th adding £6939 to his bankroll. Waheed only managed one spot better, running into a very unlucky flop. His QQ was up against AQ that flopped an A. By the time we got to the final 3, the chip counts were 1,900,000 for Sunny Chatta, 2,900,000 Tom Mcdonald and 3,900,000 for Julian Thew. A deal was agreed giving Julian £62,547 and the trophy and title, with £60,000 for Tom and £52,000 for Sunny. Congratulations to three great players!

Running throughout the Monte Carlo was the Party Poker 48-hour Big Cash Game. It started 8pm on Friday with a line up including Sam Trickett, Jennifer Tilly, Neil Channing, Annette Obrestad, Bruno Fitoussi, Devilfish and Tony G, and ended with Devilfish, Trickett and Channing returning after some sleep to join the likes of Andrew Feldman, Roland De Wolfe and Mike Matusow. The game attracted big audiences both live and via online streaming, and helped to create an immense atmosphere in the club.

In case it’d slipped our minds on why Dusk Till Dawn is recognised as one of the top card rooms in the world, on Sunday, the club breezed 3 tournaments simultaneously, as well as 14 cash games, reminding us all what a phenomenal poker facility we have. Well done to all the team at the club who contributed in putting on an astounding show of poker.

Next up is our €80,000 guaranteed Grand Prix III event in May. The event is guaranteed at 1,600 entrants, and is set to break the record once more for the biggest UK poker tournament of all time.
