Title: Genting go Fox Hunting
Post by: tikay on November 23, 2011, 12:24:40 PM
Pres Release in "igamingbusiness" reads.....

"......Casino operator Genting UK has announced that it has purchased the Fox Poker Club in London for an undisclosed sum and will add it to its Genting Casinos portfolio of venues that includes the Circus, Maxims and Mint brands.

Genting UK is a subsidiary of Genting Malaysia, which is itself owned by leisure and hospitality giant Genting Berhad, and operates 45 casinos throughout Great Britain and recently signed a two-year sponsorship agreement with English Premier League soccer team Aston Villa.

The Fox Poker Club is London’s only fully licensed and dedicated poker club and was founded by Chris North and Ian Hogg in 2005.

“It was always a dream of mine to open a poker club in London and, although it’s been a real challenge with delayed openings and not getting our 24-hour licence until July of this year, I’m extremely proud of what we’ve achieved,” said North, Managing Director for the Fox Poker Club.

“The Club is in a great position to continue growing and we are very pleased that it is passing to such good hands. We wish the Club and Genting all the success in the future.”

The Fox Poker Club was granted a full UK casino licence in 2008 before opening its doors in September of 2010 after securing funding of around one million dollars. The venue now employs approximately 80 staff and has managed to acquire in excess of 20,000 members in just over twelve months.

“We always knew there was a market for a poker club in the heart of London and it’s been a wonderful project to have been involved in,” said Hogg, Chairman for the Fox Poker Club.

“I’m immensely satisfied to see the Fox Poker Club develop into one of London’s best venues and I’ll be back to play games on a regular basis.......”

I thought it only opened recently. It's been there for six years?

Oh sorry, did I break your concentration?

The Fox Poker PR splurge, AND the Website states......

The Fox Poker Club has been open since September 2010

It also says in the PR splurge......

The Fox Poker Club was granted a full UK casino licence in 2008 before opening its doors in September of 2010

You pay your money & you take your choice.....

they're reallly making a go for it, aren't they?

the one area I'd like to see them try and shake things up in is their use of the iPoker skin. been playing the odd tournie on there for the GUKPT and its horrible stuff.

but doubt that will ever happen.

Priorities for the place...

1. Change colour scheme and make place feel less crowded. Not sure how they can do this because they do ahve limited space but often it comes across a bit oppressive.

2. Better food. Most of the food is inedible, small portions and whenever I go there I eat before hand.

3. remove membership fee. They said they did this because they didn't want people coming in off the street who wanted a few beers after the pub was shut. Why ever not?

4. better dealers. They are gettign better but still below standards of other places.

5. Friendlier staff. Some of the staff really need to pretend they want you there.

6. a weekly comp with a buy in bigger than 55quid.

really? that's a lol funny justification considering you only have to pay the membership to play poker. anyone with id can go in on a free guest membership and drink but not play

Just to say I have passed this feedback on to the people that matter and will do so with any further feedback that anyone has

All poker related 'wants' are largely academic given the purchase is presumably for the casino/gaming licence rather than the club's financial viability as a poker venue?

There are already alot of Casinos in the central London area (quite a few owned by Genting), and the new (huge!) Hippodrome Casino, which is just around the corner, is opening in March.
The Fox floor space is relatively small to convert into a pure casino, so I would have thought( hoped!) they would continue as they are now with majority of the space poker and the minority casino tables?

I doubt they'd be interested after opening the new Genting casino in Derby so close to DTD.

The membership fee is the nut-low idea in a casino of all time.

Are Genting emerging as real competition to Dtd? New venues, online site and a tour with the  backing of a company worth $ billions. I support  Rob and Dtd  but am even havingy head turned by a company that also seems to be looking out for poker players.

If you have sampled some of their Venues, you'd know the answer to that.....and you have....and you do. ;)

I am fully supportive of Genting's promotions, & support of Live Poker, but they do not represent a threat to DTD. Different markets, different strokes, different folks.

I also doubt they are charging a 3% deduction from Prize Pools on their new Tour, as UKIPT do, I believe.

It's all good for poker. Been limiting the live tourneys to a couple a month whilst being a stay at home dad but now that ones at school and the twins are at nursery and school from September the wife wants me from under her feet and playing full time again.  So much choice which is great. :)

There is one very specific way in which the Fox is better than DTD.

Jilly deals there now.

yeah, their monthly 300 is in direct competition with the dtd monthly to keep london players local.

I am a Dtd 300 reg as is easy to get seats and 100k gtd is awesome. Can't see anyone else coming near to this prize but I can see overlay at Dtd that could bring the pool down to 80k again.
Simple things make a massive difference to mid priced comPs that attract recreational players. When Dtd Put on a £300 deepstack mid month last year it flopped because not many recreational players could find the £300 buy in mid month. Most get paid end of the month so have the readies to buy in but like most muggles, two weeks after pay day they are skint and counting the hours down till next payday.

This makes me a little sceptical about genting getting the numbers to some of their events particually as some of their target market will not want to be taking thurs or fri off work to play mid month.

Good luck to them tho and I will defo be checking their tour out

Genting starting to make a real push.  Clever business plan TBH, get everything set up quietly and then surge their branding into the market when everything is set.  I haven't been to Fox yet but I think I'll keep my eye on it with interest.  At the moment I'm just hopeful for a good cardroom at the new Aspers in Stratford.  A lot more chance of occasional players rocking up full of fizzy drinks and confidence.  That place better be good or I will be sad.
