The proposal

So, I'm now back playing SNG's again, for those that don't know, spent most of 2010 grinding them and did well playing 45's, I'm now playing 180's and have been doing good so far. I'm currently backed by James "MC" Atkin to play 180's but hope to be playing back on my own dime soon, he was happy for me to inc these in my schedule but other than Sunday's they rarely run so it would take a lot longer to ride out variance and thus could swing results pretty severely if I was to mix them in and run bad. So I am looking to sell 100% for a 50/50 split to play the $35 180's on Sundays. I would be proposing starting with $2k to play them and will play them every Sunday, playing everyone that runs for around 10 hours at peak time for at least the next three months and I won't leave whilst still in MU. The 35's are tough and I wouldn't have a huge edge in them but I do believe I do have an edge in them, I'm currently playing 3r/8/15's and I'm up around $6k from 3k games ( sharkscope has me closer to 7k but this is wrong due to how they work out the rebuys)


Variance

I'd just like to make a couple of points regarding variance in these. Currently the #1 player on the scope leaderboard for all 180 mans is down $4k over 2k games for these this year, now there's a few reasons why that could be but he's clearly a very good sng player and that's how he's done this year at them. On the otherhand, the biggest winner in these this year has made over 20k in just 1k games but has played 7k games at lower stakes making just over $1 a game and I wouldn't say he's one of the best regs in these games. I've put 2k as a starting amount, this equates to 57 games and since 200 bi downswings are fairly common in the lower stakes which are easier games, then it's certainly possible that we could need to reload multiple times.

Also, I will be mixing these in with my usual schedule and will be grinding 20-24 tables, something that I've done for a while and manage fine with but the odd misclick does happen.

So starting with $2k, selling 5% minimum...

I'd be looking to start this Sunday, I was going to specify a minimum of 2 months but next Sunday I think I'm playing mtt's for the anniversary and Sunday after is Xmas so made it 3 instead.

PS I've posted on 2+2 to find out average numbers for how many of these run weekdays and Sundays, I proposed just Sundays as they run more often but can inc for every session if more than a handful run as obv means can level out variance quicker.

Did another min cash, 13th, jammed co 8bbs 82hh, btn has JJ.

We ran pretty good in the early/mid stages and had a good few chances today, sadly very little went our way deep. Had 2 min cashes and an 8th, as well as that we lost a 20k pot just about to go to 8/1.6k with A5<<<<<QJ, comes K10xxA to bust 20th. The one we came 8th in was pretty brutal, we had AJ<<<<<<A3 comes 654J2 for 14k to give us a 36k stack near the bubble @600/1200, we then had AQ<<<<A5 for 29k pot @ 1/2k to give us over 50k, sigh at the A54 flop, two hands later we have AK<<<<QTdd for 17k pot this time to take us to 34k, so we could've quite easily had the abs world. We certianly dished out a few coolers of our own but as I say not a lot went our way deep, obv the 2 outer kinda sucked as well.

Nah, nothing to do with ICM. If we give the button a calling range of 9.2%, sb I know is a good reg so even if we give him a range of 23.7% and bb calling range of 19% then we should be jamming 81% of our range, which incs everything suited and basically only folding 2x, 3x, I'm jamming atc pretty much always, we effectively have 5bbs here so you just have to ship it in.

As George has pulled out now and he had invested $200 then that part of the mu is now wiped as he's choosen to leave. Anyone disagree with that ?

Think it's pretty simple Cos although I had to think about it for a bit.

It just gets wiped from total MU and lucky Ray gets to pocket it the same as he would in any MU deal. Well not pocket it but not have to pay it back.

Total MU at that stage would be $8000 (4 x investments).

Knock off my $600 and you're left with $7400 MU.

If someone else buys in next time total MU becomes $9400 with the new person having only $150 owed to them. Other investors will be owed the full % from the start.

When pigs start to fly Ray gets out of it that person just gets their $150 + their 7.5% of any profit.

The more people pull out and get replaced the better it is for Ray as he gets to pocket their investment as soon as he gets out of MU.

For example if ray was 1200 in makeup with u and needed 300 more from u and u'd had enough, I could give you a few hundo (that you wouldn't have otherwise got back). I benefit too (assuming ray clears makeup) and it's no different for ray to you having not sold your piece.

I'm with you make,  if the person  was in $500 of make up with me and wanted another $200 and I did not want to carry on, I would not want to just end it and the next person in line takes it, I would want to try sell it for $250 and the person buying it carrys on and the person is $500 in make up to that person

With Raymond's agreement you can sell privately with MU


Its another one that should have been specified at the start, but as it hasnt been you cant force Ray to owe a third party MU.

My #1 advice is to think of more eventualities before the start.  Currency vig/payment methods/buy-out/dates/exceptions/amount of discretion/volume/shoe size/buy-ins/in running amendments/etc.  Whilst 'planning is ghey' it doesn't half help..

I think the problem can be solved in 2 strokes.  Round 1, settle everyone that wants to be settled at this point so that everyone is a happy bunny.  Round 2, agree on the method going forward from today, if this is going to have any longevity.

So Round 1.  

When people stake on MU, the horse has the obligation to continue playing (otherwise MU wouldn't exist) and the backer has the obligation to continue reloading, up to the point prescribed in the agreement where the backer has the option to walk away.  Declining to reload relinquishes any further obligation on the horse; they walk free.

Most agreements will define in the initial agreement what rights the backer has with regard to selling MU on to a third party.  Otherwise it isn't fair on the horse if they enter into an agreement to be staked by Snow White and wake up one day to find out Snow White just sold you to the Driscoll Brothers (OFAH) and they want to have a chat!

In this case, people have already declined to reload, so where usually negotiations can be held to arrive at a fair price to trade MU, here it is a bit awkward, not least because there are multiple backers.

As a compromise and to expedite this to a workable eventuality, I would suggest that Ray gets first dibs on buying out stakers at 50%.  Ray could buy this for himself, or for his 'appointed agent'.  In this way, Ray gets some control over who gets to buy out initially, and stakers get a partial refund.  If Ray is unable/unwilling to take up his first dibs, then I would say at that point each staker is at liberty to sell on their MU to whoever they wish privately (within the confines of known Blondes seems reasonable) at a privately agreed price, and simply inform Ray of the name change on the %.

Round 2.

Whilst the 'patient is on the table' take this opportunity to define how it will work in the future.  My suggestion would be that in the first instance, the staker approaches Ray expressing an interest in selling out.  Ray gets first dibs on agreeing a price with them, or at least influencing who should be first in line to buy out. If they fail to agree terms, the staker gets the choice of continuing to reload, walking away, or selling on the MU to a third part (again, within the confines of known Blondes)  It obviously isn't fair to ask for a pause while that happens, so stakers should be starting to think about selling out during the 'last bullet' phase and not when the account is busto and Ray is looking to play.

Hope that is a fair solution to all parties.  Just for clarity, I will not be the appointed agent  ;D

I'm not looking to profit myself from being in make up and then people choosing to leave so it gets wiped, I don't mind people that want to leave choosing to sort what's best for themselves but I would rather they told me that's what they had done then me to continue to think one person has a % when in fact it's someone else. I was merely discussing theory of it. I know your intentions are always the best.

My thought was this. If x person wants to sell, I could benefit by buying their makeup at a discount. They benefit by getting an amount they otherwise wouldn't by selling and you're no worse off than if they didn't sell.

I'm not a stakeholder or investor in this, so not sure if my opinion is needed, welcome, or even counts.

But if an arbitrator were needed, it's fortunate that Simon Galloway has agreed to be the appointed Agent. He suffers from chronic poor taste, but has fine judgement in these matters.

It's also fortunate that few blondes are more trusted than Mondy, as this is, in truth, all a bit awkward, & tricky.

Here are some interesting bad beat spots from today...

We had AK<<<<99 for 26k @ 600/1200 with 19 left, 1010J was a decent start but no good, thought we'd pure bubbled but someone else shorter must've busted as we did a min, that was as good as it got.

Busted one in 25th, had 10bbs, shorty jams 4bbs we reship from sb with KQ, he has AA lol. Very next hand the hj jams with 15bbs, 12bbs effective, everyone but the bb is <8bbs and hj is a reg so range is pretty wide here, I flick it in with A6os, hj has A2, xx22x, gg.

Few other spots where we had chances: jammed 11bs from hj @ 300/600 with J10ss, sb finds KK, pretty heaven 10xxss flop to give us a shout but comes brick brick. Had 18bbs in another @ 200/400 utg+2 jams 10bbs we rejam 88 co finds JJ and has us covered, utg+2 had A9os, JJ holds. One other fun one, we jammed 5bbs from co @ 200/400 97os, binked against btns AA, very next hand AK<<<<<99 for 12k, sigh.

Other than that just few standard spots early on and a few beats.

It's the profit that should be shipped to stakers and leave the $4k stake to be played with. Possibly send back $2k but then it just means sending money backwards and forwards forever.

Matt, If we did this we would almost certainly at some point go broke again. I thought I had posted this itt but maybe I didn't but we should aim to reach a 7k roll which would give us 200 bi's and then ship any profits above that figure and although we could still have a 200bi downswing it gives us a solid basis to play from. However, if everyone wants to take there profit from the current balance then we can do that but as I say I think we should aim to get to 7k and then take a profit after that.

Going broke isn't an issue. That's the idea of being in make up. If you need another top up then it's our responsibility to top you up.

What do you do if you reach $7k? Do you then set that as the new make up figure and say that $1500 of the money's yours?

What if you get to $7k then drop down to $4k and decide to call it a day? Do you owe the stakers the $1500 that was theirs? Do the stakers owe you the $1500 that was yours?

To be honest I want to take any profit out on a daily basis or at least have it noted so that we know how much of the current roll is owed to stakers and yourself.

Saying we should get to $7k then take a profit is silly. We're in profit at $4001. Why do we to be $3k in profit before we say we're in profit?

My opinion is to take the profit out immediately. If everyone disagrees that's absolutely fine, I'll just pull out.

You just need them to buy the MU. If they aren't prepared to buy it they don't get in.

How much they pay for it will be determined by simple supply and demand.

If nobody is prepared to pay anything for it then a new investor gets it for free. If somebody is prepared to pay 10% then they move to the front of the queue.

I said 50% just because it's a nice even and I think fair figure.

You've got a list of people who want in. Marky is prepared to sell his share for 50% of it's value so see if the first person on the list is prepared to pay it. If not then move to the next person.

Alex may want more than 50% so it may go further down the list. If he pushes it though he may end up having to give it away for nothing.

You may get people prepared to pay more for it though in which case it would only be fair to let the seller sell to them.

Surely unless makeup is bought privately it makes sense for you to buy it all Ray and then re-sell?

it's not down to ray to buy makeup. if a backer pulls out and can't sell the makeup privately then it should be written off surely?

Makeup is for sale, and only if no buyers is the player allowed to take it. So Matt already offered 50% for it, so he first in line

If a backer quits they lose make up. If, instead, a backer finds someone to take their place and they strike a deal between them and the stakee is happy then happy days. Isn't that the normal way of it ?

You enter a staking deal knowing you can lose. If you can't fund it then tough you shouldn't gamble if you can't afford it. Other people are affected not just stakee and staker x who is messing about. Staker x needs to deal with there side efficiently. Stakee needs to play what they said or communicate well if there is an issue.

It's only getting complicated because Ray is trying to be everybodies friend. Doesn't work in business. You agree a deal and you stick to it (within reason). Everyone knew there was potential reloading and also they could walk away. Did anyone really think they'd get losses back if they jumped ship in a downswing ?

However as it seems nobody else is interested at the minute I'll take the last 5%, happy to pay the same as Matt offered for your mu Alex, also happy if Matt wants to take the mu and I just take the 5% then Matt continues to spoon feed me going forward for how to manage that in the easiest way then I'm fine with that as well, just woteva's easy/fair.

You have to sell the make up otherwise you get a situation where people are due payouts at different stages.

If someone buys in today with no make up and Ray wins a bit tomorrow then they are due a payout but nobody else is. Ray is also due a payout off their bit but not everyone else's until he's made a few k more.

If there was only one backer it wouldn't be a problem but as there are several they all need to be kept at the same stage of investment.

If not it'll be an absolute nightmare to work out who gets paid and when.

So explain what happens in this situation:

New staker comes in to the mix for 5% and sends Ray $100 for his share.

Existing stakers send a total of $1900 to Ray as well meaning that they are now owed $5900.

On day one of the new stake Ray binks 3 comps and wins $4000

How are you planning on divvying that up?

Existing stakers get their initial 2 investments back but Ray is still in the hole to them for $1900

New staker has a 5% share of $4k owing to him as far as he is concerned which is $200. Obviously Ray gets 50% of this as well because that's how the profits are split.

Unfortunately now though there's only $3800 left to split between the original stakers so they actually don't get their original stake back because even though it appeared as though it was there it actually wasn't.

I'm sure it could be worked out but it's complicated and much easier to sell MU and maintain everybody at the same level.

Basically if Ray writes the MU off then he has to treat everybody as individual stakers.

The original list of people have 95% of his action at the original agreement.

New staker would have 5% of action.

Every day Ray has to split his P/L between the 2 groups and keep them separate.

If he wins $1000 then $950 goes towards group 1's MU and $50 gets split between him and the new person,.

It's not too bad when there's one new person but he could end up with loads of people with different MU all at different levels.

It's up to him to decide what he wants though but if he doesn't get a taker then Ray should take it himself and Alex gets nothing.

If at a later date someone wants in then they can buy the MU off Ray at a more reasonable rate.

I want to get back playing these so don't mind giving Alex 1/2 the mu back to get it sorted when I'm very confident of getting out so will profit from it anyway. As I've already said though, I don't like profiting from the fact I've lost people's money so will give the $50 to updates as well when I do get out, kinda feel like it's a bit harsh on George that he didn't have the same option but not really sure how to resolve that now, sorry mate.

I've come up with a way to make this a bit easier.

I'm going to ship George $60 for his old make-up. I know he willingly dropped out, but if I'm buying Alex's make-up off him (which I am), then this way everyone is in for the full $4k make-up. Also means Monda isn't benefiting from people dropping out.

It bumps my percentage from 10% to 15%.

Have already shipped Monda $100 for the next bullet.

I'd echo this.  I did a bit of back of the envelope stats, and I think the chance of your results for a breakeven player is probably less than 5% over the 470 games you have played.  If you are profitable, it should be even lower. 

I know I have nothing to do with this staking, but if this happened to me, I'd be at least stopping to reassess.

I think I get psychological blocks sometimes with particular tournaments when on a bad streak.  Sometimes just taking a breather from that particular tournament and hittting them fresh can make a difference.

how did you work this out? I have no history with sng's whatsoever but I can't imagine that less than 1 in 20 times and breakeven player will lose 170buyins in 470 games. Seems like it should happen way more frequently given the nature of these things.

I just did a quick sharkscope, and he got 34 top 10 % finishes in 470 games.  This should be a binomial distribution with probability 10%, so he should be getting 47 on average if he is average (I used break even incorrectly). 

Standard deviation is 6.5 or so (hopefully).  Hence he is 2 standard deviations away from average.  Approximating this to normal, which should be ok over this sample is just about spot on a 95% confidence interval.   You have a 1 in 20 chance of been more than 2 standard deviations either way.   Looking at negative 2 standard deviations down only it is around 1 in 40.

I don't know if these are a lot tougher than the $15 ones, but whatever the reason for the downswing I'd take a break if I saw this in my results.

Obv it sucks that we have ran shit from the start, but it is standard (think I just say really a lot). I'd expect to have a few of them over the period of a year in my games. I can assure backers that I don't have a "physchological block" in these games nor is the standard between 35's and 15's so different that I'd be a proven winner in one but a losing player in the other.

We where in profit at the start of the year so since then I have played 291 games, made 12 finals finishing : 3,3,5,5,5,5,6,6,7,7,9,9 this is why we are doing shit not because I can't beat the games.

As I've already said, I've ran terrible on finals whether it be AA<<<<<KK for close to 1/2 the chips in play to then lose a flip to bust 5th or me jamming in really std spots and being crushed. I'm obv not a huge noob that would play $35 finals different to my other games, I play every game dependant on who is on my tables, some of the finals for 35's have been really soft, doesn't matter if you get coolered though.

Also just to add, as far as re-assessing things my side, I go through wiz before every session so I'm constantly assessing what I'm doing.

Doobs you're gonna have to excuse me if I make a big mistake here as I'm slightly dyslexic with numbers.

If he should have made 47 finals, and he's made 34, he is making 72% of the finals he should be, which seems like a completely standard "EV" of finals swing, so lets say the two outcomes would be final or not final, his EV of finals would be 47 but he is in fact on 34 over a very small sample - would have been equally as unlikely for him to make 60 finals? that would have been the reverse swing.

So consider now the play on the actual final where the money is won/lost, the average stack for the final is 30,000, so sposing everyone 1 in 10 times he finals with a 30,000 stack what would his average finishing position be if he had say a 5% Edge? it would be $601.86? (all nine payouts/9*1.05)? is this right or am i being a complete moron? lol

but the sample of finals is so small there is no way to be anywhere near true expectation?

I guess the point i'm arguing is that whereas the maths to come up with the 5% figure is DEFO right (you know way better than me) that doesn't go anyway to explaining the $EV gap - say a flip for 100,000 pot 4handed, with equity of about $1300, that's a 10buyin EV swing right there, I can't see how it connects relevance of a 170buying downswing. Although I'd like to see it because it's very interesting.
