Title: Braking with your left foot
Post by: MahoganyVic on January 03, 2012, 11:24:40 PM
Have heard about this being impossible for a while, but was having none of it.

Remembered about it today while taking the mrs to work. Doddling along at 20mph so thought what harm could I do.... if it wasnt for seatbelt i'd have sent us both crashing through the windscreen. Luckily we were both wearing them, so only have whiplash and a deaf left ear from her screaming. Thankfully the driver behind had quick reactions too, was close to being a pile up.

Anyway, why is this not possible? I barely brushed it with the leftie.

Please be responsible and don't try doing this with children in the car or on busy roads!

I think rally drivers do it for control around some corners mate, its just a case of getting used to it as anything.

Lol. Of course it's not impossible. It's just because you're not used to it.

Do it all the time and you'll be fine.

You may think you barely brushed it but you actually did a similar motion to when you depress your clutch hence why you nearly killed everyone.

So I wondered  what would happen if I braked whilst the throttle was on

I shit my self

Luckily I had no one in my car and roads was clear

I once broke my left foot, so I had to do everything with my right foot.

Why would this not be possible?

I always used to do this and then got told off by my driving instructor when I had to get my British license as he said "You have to use your right foot to break"...lol.

It's a definite skill. No advantage whatsoever to implement it with a road car tho.

I brake with my left foot in my fwd rallycar, but I do have the advantage of a dog engagement gearbox. Not only does it save time by not having a time gap inbetween throttling and braking,  it also enables you to alter the attitude of the car without having to steer. It's pretty fun to come into a corner backwards.
It took me a fair bit of time to perfect it even though I have years of experience racing karts, so god knows how hard it is for a fish!

You must have some skills! Tried it a few more times in an empty car park and couldnt manage it, given up now before I cause some damage.

Interesting about it being used by rally drivers. Guessing they are lunatics anyway though, so emergency stops while learning it are prob nothing!

i drive an automatic so it makes sense to break with your left foot and find it strange to have to use my right foot if i jump in someone elses car
