Cleveland to beat goldon state
steph curry is reported to still be out and without the dynamic point guard they are not the same team, cleveland been on very good form with rookie 1st pick irving being on fire!!

l.a clipper to beat utah jazz
clippers star chris paul is a doubt however. Chauncey Billups shifted to point guard in Paul's absence despite dealing with back tightness and finished with 20 points. Blake griffin and caron butler are playing awesome of late
utah have won there last few games but they have played mainly against week competition and all in all their squad is pretty weak

wern't the spreads thunder-2.5 and lakers-3.5
on 365 they give you a wide range of spreads...those u quoted were the standard 1.9.... i was being a bit nitty and took lakers -2.5 @ 1.76... lucky i did.. they drilled a 3 pointer with 8 seconds to give me the spread :)

It was a poor game both teams offense had an off night..lakers were 1/19 from the field for the whole 3rd qtr  !!

Half a point in the nba is worth about 5c so taking 1.76 -2.5 instead of 1.90 -3.5 is just giving money away really....correct price -2.5 shjould have been 1.83 if line is 3.5.

The big thing in nba at the mo is the late start to the season a few of the older teams have a few players struggling for fitness i took a position on celtics last week that saw me ball deep only to find out that an hour before the game Paul Pierce had done a one hour sprint on a treadmill and was treating the game as a warm up despite trailing for long spells in the game they did take the lead just after half time which allowed me to get out for no loss.  Its really important to try and find reliable team news and a position that could be profitable is backing against teams on the road back to back.

Lol yeah this season will be crushing for the vet teams like boston and the Spurs.  Theyre gonna take it slowly with the vets and give them time to get fit them rest them throughout the season because of the brutal schedule.  The good young teams will crush the regular season this year, the good vet teams will be looking just to stay in contention and make a late push for the 4-6 seed and then go for it in the playoffs.

This season especially, knowing who is and isnt fit on each team and comparing how many games each team has played recently will be huge.

Unders in NBA are mad to sweat as the culture of giving fouls away when you are behind late in games to stop the clock and get you the ball back happens in most games.

Chomps seeing as i've been looking at NBA for 1 week having never been into basketball at all and by my own admission no nothing about the NBA before then i am so far 18/34 picks for a small loss and missing by literally a point on a lot of the others. I'm doing my homework watching games and getting a feel for the spreads etc.. although i do this for fun i don't like to lose and considering i probably lay bets a week = to most peoples monthly wages i obv take it semi seriously.

Obv NBA seems to throw up some odd results.. example.. Miami Heat almost invincible at home..league highest scorers that achieved without 1 of their big 3 superstars and a clear 10 point favourite let Milwaukee come in who have lost 8/9 and get done by 11 points...go figure that form... watching the game even the commentators were surprised at the Heat's poor performance..

The thread is more to a reference point and to welcome any input from people who have knowledge of the NBA... ive found that I really enjoy the games and the action makes it that much more exciting..

Suffice to say coming on here and taking the piss isn't welcome... if you have nothing constructive to say please don't post..kthx

Title: Re: NBA Betting
Post by: redarmi on January 23, 2012, 08:00:43 PM
Of all the sports I have ever bet on or booked seriously basketball is the one I have struggled most to make pay.  I think part of it is that there simply isn't the masses of mug punters blindly betting the overhyped teams like in the NFL and because it isn't a sport I was brought up with the more fundamental handicapping is harder and I have had to teach myself.  Couple of things I have found useful though:

1. Team news is key and the UK bookies don't respond quick enough.  Players like Kobe, Lebron, Wade, Carmelo, Dwight Howard etc are worth 3 or 4 points to a team and if you get the news as it comes out you can beat the moves here (although probably not with the US books) but your accounts won't last long.  It is also worth looking at going under totals on this kind of news as that moves a tiny bit slower but is generally worth less (prob max 2.5 points).  As I mentioned before half a point is roughly worth 5c and, unlike the NFL/CFB they are all worth the same so if you can get 10/11 1.5 points off the general US line then it is pretty much worth betting blind.  13 or 13 years ago a couple of mates of mine that went on to make very significant amounts of money punting built their original banks by finding an Asian bookie that didn't move their lines in line with the US market.  It is no exaggeration to say they made decent six figure sums in a couple of years without knowing hardly anything about the sport.

2. The Asian books now take the most money on NBA like they do on soccer and the moves happen there first so if you look at someone like www.sbo.com or www.ibcbet.com and see a big difference then it is probably worth following.

3. Pace of game is important and certain teams seem to be able to control the pace of the game so when a team that averages 210 points per game plays a team which averages 180 and the total is 195 if you can figure out which style will dominate then it is valuable info.

4. Scheduling is massive and will be more so this year.  Teams on road trips where they play 4 games in five nights on the road invariably can't play well the whole time and if they have to go through OT and play the following night it is very tough to play up to their power ratings.  Also teams that play the big teams, which this year are probably Boston, Miami and Lakers struggle to get up the game after especially if it is the next night and they have run the big team close.

5.  In general NBA is like the other American sports in that actual teams ability is less important in betting than the situations and motivational issues.

Hope this helps a bit but like I said I have always found it harder than other sports to make pay.  Oh and definitely trebles....please.

Portland makes the spread...

important lesson learnt..... when a superior team plays a weak team and gets way in front they stick their 2nd string in for say final qtr..which is logical i suppose..however the effect on points and spread is marked..

Last night both Thunder mainly..pulled their starters when cruising to the overs...2nd string then managed to go for about 2/15...same to a degree 76er's...This killed the overs when I was already counting them in  :(

Bulls had their starman Derrick rose back from injury and cruised to the overs and hornets come through for me for the 3rd time in a row.

Big shock of the night was the performance of the Magic.... woeful would be putting it mildly..they shot 24 % from the field this from a team that averages 45%... watching the game it was almost embarrassing as they missed shot after easy shot and turned over the ball some 25 times... ( around double average ) .

for a pro NBA team to score 56 points (especially one as talented as the Magic ) is nothing short of twilight zone and made an ordinary looking Celtics look worldbeaters. The Celtics themselves missed way to many shots but to their credit they played pressure defence very well. Celtics are desperate to get one of their stars Rondo back on the court to control the offense especially for 3 pointers and setup.

Magic go to Indiana tonight and are quoted as slight dogs..think i will hold off and see what kind of performance they put in after last night..it will either be the same or they will bounce straight back and put it on Indiana..although the Pacers def no pushover.  Magic host the Celtics in a rematch Thursday in Orlando.... may be an interesting rematch

So a marginal profit on the card as had the single for bigger money than the doubles and 4 fold...

bobcats got ahnialated lol

i run good..suns have won 14 straight v the raptors since 2001 winning by an average of 13 points..raptors have one of the worst records in the NBA..but last night was the night they decided to play like superstars and turn the Suns over....

Denver -4.5

Heat -6.5
bulls - 6.5

Heat -6.5
bulls - 6.5
denver 4.5

Hornets +15
Denver -4.5

Heat playing way below par and let a 10 point lead slip late letting the lowly pistons in to make it too close at the death. As a side note the Magic's chris Bosh is a truly awesome player, however James one of their other stars although obviousley an incredible talent is a hugely selfish player often taking a difficult shot himself rather than laying off to a team mate for the easy score. Seems incredibly arrogant but i suppose at 6 foot 8 and built like a brick shit house on a gazillion dollars a year you can afford to be...but he cost his team about 8 points last night through his play and me the spread...tosser !!

Bulls very disappointing at home with Rose back but Deng sidelined... Bulls seemed to be cruising at half time but run out of steam. Easy to see why Rose is last seasons MVP..incredible player !

So those two were pretty much locked as 11 point faves but despite me being nitty they failed to deliver a clean sweep.

Hornets hung around like a bad smell as expected even against the might of the thunders offense...5 times they have come through for me on a + bet and as i get a feel for the spreads these seem to be more of a better bet as most contests are very tight. Denver with their strong depth came steaming through the lamentable Kings as expected...had a late cheeky one on the clippers +5.5 that came through to perfection... So a tidy profit stopped from being a great night by two big faves not coming through.

Only 2 games tonight...

Have Celtics +11

added to a double over 172.5

In Orlando and after good win in Indiana the magic seem to be firing again..with a days rest expect a good performance in the return v the Celtics... the Celtics themselves haven't played since the easy victory over the magic on Monday so should be well rested for the visit to Florida. Starman Rondo is a possible starter ....

So I have the Celtic as a nitty +11 in which should be a close encounter.... famous last words...

Nice single and double last night on the improving Celtics as their Veterans begin to find some fitness.... didn't look good early on as the magic raced to a 29 point lead and Boston seemed reluctant to go to the post..preferring to shoot long distance.
Clawback began late in the 2nd qtr and continued all the way through the 2nd half as the Celtics played some of the best defense witnessed so far in this shortened season. the Magic got called on a couple of technicals ( basically yellow cards that result in a free shot ) mainly for abusing the refs as they became more and more frustrated.

Called the overs nicely to as Celtics run out 91- 83 winners :)

Yep possibly..still getting my head around NBA...the college scene from the outside looks mucho complicated with the divisons and the ranking and the politics involved.... you got to love college football/basketball etc..... the big coaches on multi million dollar deals.

A good card ... 1 result from a clean sweep...had a toss up between Denver -10.5 and warriors +6.5..obv went the for the wrong one but pleasing nights work . New Orleans fast becoming my favourite team like my beloved saints in NFL..  They been threatening to turn in a good result and as redarmi alluded to earlier amount of games and tiredness can be a big factor. The magic I think suffered from this . Also Toronto had their star italian back the last 2 games which they win..his a deadly 3point shooter.. I noticed he reagravates the injury and misses last night... Toronto. Tumble to usual heavy loss..his out for a while so I expect Toronto to suffer accordingly

Finally Pulled off a clean sweep..... really liked the line on the points for Bulls v Philly.... although 2 good defensive teams they are also very good offensively and the Bulls hadn't been involved in a game with that low points in around 12 games.... both teams roared off to a blistering start and by the half it was feet up and cigar time..however philly's defence stiffened and it took the Bulls 5 minutes of the 3rd qtr to score their first field goal... caused a slight sweat but came through in the end.

La Clippers totally transformed with the return of Chris Paul.... and have scored huge points with him back...the Jazz also capable of putting up numbers so the overs looked nice.

portland routing the woeful bobcats was pretty much a given... and the Bucks are a very good team with Jennings and co and even against the might of the heat 10 points is huge...as it happens they go on to pull off a great victory... was a little concerned that the Celtics might let a big lead slip again but they powered home against the raptors who away from home + star Italian out = bad news.

As we go on and learn it seems home court is a big advantage and as Redarmi alluded to schedule, on the road and back to back games takes its toll physically.

Watching some of these guys is breathtaking considering they can be around 6'10 and 19 stone their athleticism is astonishing.

As a side note I have signed up to the NBA TV stream...gives you every game live streamed in HD..you can watch 4 at a time and replay every singel game in full + all the stats etc etc... to say the least it is superb !!!

Clippers, Denver looks like another points bloodbath as the two powerhouse offenses go at it again. Clipper resurgent with Chris Paul back from injury and scoring for fun.Denver having trouble defending and looking to win by just putting + 100 scores up...Clippers can match them easily...

Bulls look to have Deng back in the team, harnessed once again with the deadly MVP Rose.. Bulls a little off last couple of games but with the Deng boost should have plenty for the knicks whose only boast lately is drubbing one of the leagues worst..apart from that they have been hugely disappointing even at the garden as the crowd will be on their back early if things don't start well.... sports superstar in the big Apple? no thanks.

Blazers look to take a tight one over the Kings as do the in form Hawks over the up and down grizzilies...

The suns game broke the back of this card as they performed over expectation and went points loopy in the first half only to be dragged back and overtaken..at one point i almost salvaged the -5.5  but evergreen nash came on with a couple of minutes left to help the suns snatch it. A big bet on the single for the thunder helped make it a small loss...was always going to be a points bloodbath that one

ok the single i really like is the Bulls over 180.5..... rose although a little sore will play alongside Deng and co..although Hornets missing a couple of starters should still help the score up enough to bring it home with the Bulls racking up a decent amount .

double in the bulls game...double Heat -2.5..although they played last night this away game almost a local jaunt..orlando misfiring... depends which one will turn up as to how it goes..have to favour the heat though but if the magic game face turns up we could be in a spot of bother.hooked them up with denver under 200..injuries have hurt Denver and their scoring..Dallas D is tough together with an offense that struggles i like a non big score ..doh !

the 5 fold..bulls overs in..like the knicks unders..stoudamire and anthony both out ...new chinese phenom had 2 great last games but can he keep it up..wizards will struggle as usual but may pull off a close 90-87 type win..as said like the heat ftw...76's.. at home and rested look good but Spurs always dangerous... clippers even without billups i like against the struggling Cav's..LOLZ famous last word there..so here we go..

bulls over 180.5

bulls-7.5
bulls over 180.5

Heat -2.5

Wasn't much on so decided to watch this and actually finding it quite enjoyable. Don't know anything about the game, but to my novice eyes it appears that overs has been quite unlucky so far....

Loads of rebounds and missed 3pt attempts coupled with numerous free throw misses too and the commentators are attributing it to the ball being lighter at altitude?

yea were under par at the minute but been pretty unlucky as you say and there is still a full half left, need 116 which is attainable but they both need to heat up. Both teams seem to be taking alot of 3pters, which I didn't really expect tbh. Should be a good second half, both very good teams. Denver very hard to play at home due to the altitude but Clippers have won their last 17 games so if anyone can beat them they can.

Title: Re: NBA Betting
Post by: TL900 on January 02, 2013, 04:02:08 AM
Free throwing has been abysmal. Most teams shoot 75-85% on average. Clippers are shooting 50% and Nuggets 47%, add to that Clippers 40% field goals and 19% 3pters and thats why this game isn't going over.

I think its awesome, feel like I dont have any need for the games to be on Sky or ESPN.  Only good thing would be the halftime shows.

The NBA cares ads are pretty tilting though, makes me not wanna watch the games live and wait till they produce the full games with no stoppages

Yea it is amazing ofc.

I swear, I saw Manu Ginobli NBA Cares ad atleast 25 times during one game last week. Pretty tilting :D

I watched some of the first match, saw Knicks go 18-8 up and then Boston went on a bit of a tear. I woke up an hour or so later, saw they were behind and went back to sleep :D

Title: Re: NBA Betting

yeah, this pretty much tells the whole story.

http://scores.espn.go.com/nba/boxscore?gameId=400278225

Carmelo had 38 of the Knicks 108 total attempts and he only scored from 10 of them. Just a bad day at the office from him by the looks of it, he has been amazing all year and the Celtics really aren't very good, pretty big win for them though. This shows why NYK can't win the title, they are just too reliant on Carmelo showing up day in day out.

Such a weird night on the whole card with Wizards,Celtics,Hornets beating Thunder,Knicks and Spurs. The magic even took Blazers to OT and they are horrible on the road, they eventually lost though.

Probably going to bet very big on the Rockets tonight vs the Lakers if the line is anything under 6 and probably the over if its less than 210 :D Should be a shit ton of points in that game, would recommend watching that tonight if you watch any game.

Not sure how many games Amare has been back for but he is messing with the chemistry they had. Too many cooks IMO. Tbf, it was the same last season when Amare, Chandler and Lin were crushing then Carmelo came back and ruined it

Looks like they've screwed down on this game, bwin opened -5.5, but soon got rid of that.

The points line there was 214.5, soon shifted to 220 and everyone around the 218/9 mark now.

lollllllllll 221 the line is now. That is just an absurd number. I think i will prob bet a little on the under but ima wait a little while to see if it shifts up anymore. -8 is pretty annoying. Woulda snapped up -5.5 if i saw it. Lakers have gasol and howard both injured and one of the worst benches in the nba. They are also just playing awful in general even when those 2 werent injured.

I don't like either side particularly. 221 is just such a large number, 1 bad stretch of 5-6 mins and its dead, makes me want to bet a little on the under. Also the fact that Dwight and Pau aren't playing means the Lakers have less good shooters and they also won't get as many FT's with no Dwight to hack so it won't stop the clock as often. 215/216 I would defo be on the over fwiw

Title: Re: NBA Betting

Line up to 224 with some books and 223 with most and still rising. Ima try hold out as long as possible. Gona bet 2x at U224 at worst.

Coral just lolling about leaving their line at 220.5, still think I'm gona hold out for the higher numbers to bet the under. Just the lack of Lakers shooters and the chances of having a bad 5-6 minutes makes betting O220 just seem so unappealing

U223.5 Lakers/Rockets (2x)

Milwaukee Bucks -5.5 (3x) William Hill

yeah, this is the worrying thing :D

They are both scoring very high % from 3's so were by no means dead yet. That 2nd Q could have been alot lower though which would have helped.

Is anyone going to the O2 on Thursday to watch the Pistons v Knicks?

Sky are covering it, (Live, Sky Sports, Thursday eveningt) & here at the Osterley Campus today & all this week, they have erected a big "Sky Sports NBA Centre" with a Basketball Court & all sorts in it.

John Starks, Bill Laimbeer & John Amaechi are all here, too. Hands up who knows who any of those three are......

I'm going Teeks. I know all three. In fact, I got my first job as a journalist thanks to one of them. I went for an interview, straight out of uni, at 'Slam Dunk' magazine, and one of their questions was who is your favourite player and why. I've never been much of a glory hunter, and I can't imagine what it's like to be a physical freak like Michael Jordan, so I said Bill Laimbeer, who was basically a great big lump of a whitey who used to foul, try and wind up the opposition star, play dirty, just rebound and block and do nothing much offensively, coz if I got to the NBA that's how I'd play. I asked later, and they said they had had 20 kids say Michael Jordan and loved my answer so much I was in.

I met John Amaechi too, we went to New York and decided to coincide it with when Orlando played at New York so we could see Meech play, the only (real) Brit to play in the NBA at the time. At the end of the game, and fuelled by lager, we stumbled down past security to try and speak to him, he had come back out after the game to chat to a couple of people. He started asking us if we were the guys who had been posting on his website telling him we were coming to watch and make sure he played well (to put it politely), security presumed we were mates and we ended up on the court with him!

Starks is an all-time great New York Knick, the games between his side and Jordan in his pomp with the Bulls are legendary. I like the line-up!

Their bench has always been v poor, but they have some injuries to steve blake and jordan hill which has made it wafer thin. No-one really understands why they are so bad. They just dont seem to have any chemistry, they are a team of allatars and just cant get anything going. This was the year lakers were supposed to be back to dominance, they were 2nd favourites to win it all just behind miami. Rumours are flying that they're gona trade howard but i really dont think he is the problem.

Watch quite a lot of NBA but never seem to catch the lakers. What is it that makes them so bad this year? Did they spend so much on Howard that the salary cap means the depth is shite, or are they just not playing well together?

Where to start where to start.

Gasol, his knees are done and he has lingering injuries so he has lost a lot of his explosiveness and speed which is affecting offense and defence.
Gasol+ Howard - on offence they do a run a good pick and roll and Gasols inside passing for Howard is pretty good but when they are both on the floor the Lakers transition defence is horrible.  I think its bottom 5 in the NBA when they are both on the floor so team are just pushing the ball up the floor quickly when both players are on the floor.
Nash - Great pg, great shooter, great passer, can run the offence but his defence has never been good so the Lakers are getting killed defensively by good guards.  Kobe has been guarding the PGs recently but the extra effort it takes to guard a good PG means Kobe is getting worn out faster in games and his scoring and efficiency is down.  When they play teams with a good guard combo and nash is forced to guard someone good they just get crushed
Kobe - as mentioned, is having to guard PGs since Nash cant guard anyone, its wearing him down so his scoring is down, fg % is down and he is still just throwing up shots without caring.  Howard has been complaining in public that Kobe is taking too many shots and not putting the ball inside (to him) enough
The bench - Not got enough off the bench, so many poor role players.  Even the 2 guys you would expect to be half decent, Jamison and Duhon have been bad so it means going with the starters for longer than they would like to.  A few weeks ago they had Howard and Gasol injured for a few games and had to bring in guys from the D-league to start and sit on the bench and they had to rely on Kobe, nash and World Peace just trying to score as many as they could between them and forcing teams into shootouts.  It didnt work out well for them.

Recently they have started with Earl Clark in place of Gasol to balance the 2nd unit and to break up the Gasol/Howard combo but Gasol quickly slammed the move and said he has never been a role player and didnt want to start now.  He looks a pretty good favourite to be traded before the deadline.  I imagine they try to trade him for a backup big guy and a defensive guard

Also imo I just dont think D'Antoni is a good coach, he had a great team for the 7 seconds or less offence in Pheonix that did really well and was great to watch.  I dont think he can coaches any other style very well and he doesnt have the players that can run teams off the floor

Sound like a broken record but anyone fancy betting against lakers again tonight? Im def betting thunder -4 vs them on sunday. Jazz are kinda rubbish on the road though, but it is the lakers......

Swerved the Jazz thankfully.

How good is kyrie irving? Jesus christ. Kid is gona be unbelievable in a couple of years.

Clippers play blazers twice in the next 2 days. The early lines are Blazers -2 in Portland and Clippers -9 in LA. 11pt difference seems a bit crazy no? I think theres a bet there somewhere just not sure what it is.

Pounding OKC -4 vs Lakers on sunday.

I only read the write up on the website, can imagine it was pretty tilting to watch... Starting to get into the NBA though, definitely some great sweats and it's even more tilting than NFL because it's so fast!

Got houses there, so obviously on the shortlist.

Could be one of a few teams, from watching all the US sports shows.

Makes no sense in the slightest for Lebron to go to LA for numerous reasons.  The only one would be money and he has more money than he can ever spend.  He wants titles now.  He aint getting no title next year or any year in LA.  Period.

Yeah, I don't disagree, and just passing what the pundits have been saying. They don't think the Lakers could put together a team to challenge, so very unlikely. From the shows I've watched, they think that Philadelphia is the most likely, or a chance of Houston which would mean switching conferences, obv.

Id love to see him at the 76ers next year and revive the old Celtics/76ers rivalry from the 80s.  Would be awesome.  The blend of their youth and his power/experience would be awesome to watch.  He would fit into their squad perfectly talent wise as well.  Not a big commute to Ohio to uproot his family.  Easy conference still in the East compared to the tougher west.  Ticks all the boxes.

If Jimmy Butler goes to the Heat (-110 fav) what price would that make the Heat for the season?

Eastern - 18/1?
Champ - 80/1?

However unlikely, Unibet 300/1 outright can’t be terrible, right?

Whatt are they giving up to get him though?  It's a two way thing they don't just acquire him and give up nothing in return.  This report doesn't make it sound like any team is getting him on the cheap.

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/blog/2018/oct/06/farewell-to-father-of-british-basketball-who-discovered-luol-deng

Anyone who follows British basketball and/or played it at national level will have heard of Jimmy.  Every time you played against one of his Brixton teams, as i did as a junior or senior, you had a tough tough night.  He fired up his teams to play so hard and physical.  He was Mr Brixton for decades and must have saved so many kids from a different life over the years.  A trip to the Brixton leisure centre was always the toughest away game of any season.  Guys like this are the real legends of sport.

I will always remember him for finding and coaching the Baker twins (Stedroy and Ronnie) who were both 5'7'' and told they were too small to ever play basketball.  I remember going to watch my first ever national league game as a kid and my local team were playing Brixton in the late 1980s and these two teenage brothers were just insane to watch.  Rapid as you like up and down the court and great ball handlers.  Ronnie was the better of the two and ended up playing at the highest level in England, most capped English player ever and played in the EuroLeague for London Towers.  Stedroy never quite hit the same heights (pardon the pun) but these two lads got me hooked on basketball seeing them so close up.

RIP Jimmy

Great start for Lebron real shame his team have recruited some of the most god awful three point shooters to surround him with.  They were 0-15 from downtown last night before they connected on one.  Good luck competing in the west like that.

Just the 14 three pointers (all time NBA record for a game) for Klay and 52 points in just over a half of basketbal (27 minutes)l. This warriors team is truly scary offensively.
