Best tip I can give anyone for Cheltenham is to buy "Weatherbys Cheltenham Festival Betting Guide" by Paul Jones

Absolutely incredible piece of work, usually available in mid February, worth 100 times more than the tenner or so it costs.

Eager beaver, I usually construct the Cheltenham 2010, 2011, thread around mid to late Feb when I start to get really excited.

Seems a long way away still.  :'(

Dynaste w/o Big Bucks in the Cleeve Hurdle tomorrow @ 5/2 is a bet. My people tell me that Pipe plans to hold it up this time round and challenge Big Bucks late. I don't by any means think he will beat the Champ but those tactics should see him reverse the form from the previous race with Five Dream and come 2nd. Mourad been off his game all season, has something to prove.

this is a cracking bet if they decide to go for 2nd place and don't try to mess with BB again. Pipe says they'll definitely hold it up today and be less positive (RP is out early tonight )

Cheers, well done.

V happy with that. They held it up as much as they could and got Big Bucks in trouble although you never really thought the winner was in doubt. Good effort.

25/1 Midnight Chase ew for the Gold Cup with Ladbrokes (nr no bet)

Loves Cheltenham, game as the come, just produced his best ever run.

Got to be some slight niggling doubts about the top 2 in the market.

Win only it's a good bet, each way, with the race very likely to cut up to just a handful of runners, it's fantastic.

He'll be 12/1 on the day of the race.

Hurricanefly out tomorrow, currently 15/8 for the champion hurdle. A weak race this year, maybe not any value now but hard to find anything to oppose him. Any each way thoughts on the race.

I currently have the following...

Albert Bartlett
Sea of Thunder 1pt ew @ 20s -- was going like a train when falling at the last over C&D in December, with the subsequent 1st and 2nd both having won since. Only 5th in reappearance at Leopardstown but not sure if the ground or the trip really to liking that day - put in a clear round of jumping and was eased up well before the line. C&D form counts for a lot imo, and with Boston Bob and Fingal Bay likely headed to other races would expect this to shorten up to around the 12/1 mark.

Triumph Hurdle
Dildar 2pt Win @ 12s -- Punted this (like I'm sure many others) in advance of today's race at Taunton - noises from the yard and in particular Dan Skelton very bullish indeed. Would need to show a lot of improvement on today's run to even make the frame at the festival, but I'm holding onto the hope that he'll come on for the run and his jumping will be sharper in the future (absolute must for the Triumph). On the flat he ran to a few lengths of Pour Moi, so he's not short of a turn of foot. Ruby seemed positive about the horse after today's ride.

Supreme
Darlan 1pt ew @ 20s -- Nicked the 20s from Billy Hills in the minutes proceeding his oh-so-easy win over the previously highly regarded Jump City. The horse is four from four, and though he might not have met stiff competition yet I feel he has a lot more in the tank than we've seen - certainly the nature of his win last out would suggest so. Price movements will be largely dependent on if/when he runs in the next couple of weeks. Has an entry at Newbury on 11th Feb where he'd be running against Zarkandar which would be an interesting yardstick, though believe Henderson thinks he's been 3lb overdone in the weights by the handicapper so might not run him there.

Ryanair
Medermit 1pt ew @ 20s -- Alan King's seem to be going well at the moment, and this horse has plenty of experience round Cheltenham. I saw him get done by Quantitativeeasing in the big December handicap. Let's not forget he had 11-5 on his back that day and beat Calgary Bay (10-7) about 12 lengths...Since then Calgary Bay is 2/2.

Gold Cup
Grands Crus 1pt ew @ 8s (NRNB) -- I love the horse to bits, and part of me hopes he doesn't yet go for the Gold Cup. This said, more than happy to be on him NRNB. He clocked a time c3secs quicker than Kauto over the same distance and fences at Kempton on Boxing Day, without being overly extended. Just think he has a massive engine and jumps nicely. Very classy horse. Proven at Cheltenham and will win whatever race he runs in imo.

Hills have 33/1 on all 4 champion races being won by the current champions at Chelters.

Big Bucks for World Hurdle
Hurricane Fly for Champion Hurdle
Sizing Europe for Champion Chase
Long Run for Gold Cup

worth a punt?

An acca at best current oddschecker prices is 30/1 so it really depends if you fancy them or not.....not much value in my book in those individual prices especially this far out when something may happen to one or more fo them.  I assume it isn't NR = no bet

It seems a fair price but it was 66/1 before Hurricane Fly's run last week (in which he was 4/5). I wish I had some 66s now.

Which option is best here plz ? Dynaste in WH, 12/1 e/w on fred, 3.5 tbp on betfair or w/o big bucks 6.4 ? I was thinking since Big Bucks is nailed on it's better to back him in the tbp market than e/w ?

Never done a Lucky 15 before lol, have put those 4 selections in, £1 lucky 15 ew costs £30 and returns £9473.88 ? Is that correct ? Obv I know we don't expect all four to win and are looking to bink places. Have I worked it out right that if all four just placed I'd get just under £200 back ?

It never hit me that you were related to Richard. He is some judge. I used to work opposite him for a while.

The reason I asked is Shinners is doing the Knaresborough preview again this year and I fancied going but I have realised it's the first day on the Masters so can't make it.

Don't get on it at this stage Monda, Colm Murphy commented today that Voler La Vedette will go for the World Hurdle rather than the Mares.

I'm not totally enthused about the chances of Binocular either although its a game of opinions.

Lastly, despite being a big Dynaste fan I think that the w/o Big Bucks market is looking pretty competitive with the Irish looking determined to come over and have a go at Big Bucks, running Voler La Vedette (as above), So Young and Mikael D'Haguenet so I might even give that a swerve for the time being.

Patience Raymondo.

Your place returns for all 4 winners would be £155.37(1/5th) and £252.50(1/4).

Loving this bet now.

Long Run isn't in the same form he was in last season (not impossible he comes good on the big day of course). Beating Burton Port half a length (probably should have lost if Gerraghty had been more positive on BP) giving 10 pounds simply isn't good enough to win a Gold Cup in most years.

It's more than possible that all the form with Kauto Star this season is dubious.

Hope Grand Crus stays away frm this race!

Long Run out to 5/2 after that. Think Burton would have beaten Long run if they were different stables. Still no one knows for sure about Grand Crus. Get on Montbazon in next.

Title: Re: The HORNERIS Cheltenham 2012 Guide
Post by: edgascoigne on February 24, 2012, 10:15:25 AM

Have added the following:

Supreme
Steps to Freedom 2pt Win @ 9s - Heard this is highly fancied at home (which you would expect for something at the head of a highly competitive market). Had a number of the leading Supreme contenders easily beaten in the Aintree bumper (where he gave Montbazon 6lbs). Has been off the track for a few months but I have no doubt Jessie Harington will have him 'match fit' on the day. She's swerving the blow he was due to have at Dundalk, wouldn't be surprised if they are keeping under wraps in advance of an opening day gamble.

On the other runners things seem to be shaping nicely in the most part (touch wood) but +EV is only theoretical and worth a lot less than cash in one's pocket. Medermit has been tipped up by Pricewise and the Timeform Jury which has led to the price falling to c8/1 and the Albert Bartlett is cutting up (Boston Bob's target remains tbc) with Sea of Thunder now 10/1. Darlan fell at Newbury in the big handicap hurdle but, assuming he's come out of that ok I'm relatively bullish. McCoy chose to ride Darlan over Get me Out of Here, which finished second to Zarkandar off level weights. Darlan was tanking when it fell and, assuming it found a bit when asked, would, by the logic of AP's choice, been right up there getting just 5lbs from Zarkandar.

Grands Crus - Pipe keeping cards close to chest but think 8/1 NRNB remains a fair bet. Dildar - runs tomorrow in the Adonis where we'll have everything crossed he can come on for his last run and mix it with a number of other smart Triumph entries.

Best of luck to all,

Ed

i have colour squadron and midnight game in the supreme. In its last race squadron fell when it had got the better of vulcanite, but seemed to not want to get to the front too soon and whether it would have beaten montbazon is a guessing game. I do like how it travelled through the race though. Pretty gutted about doing my money on grandouet as i love this horse and think it has so much raw speed and a change of gear that at 4/1 fit ew w/o the fly was a bet to nothing. With regards the race now, ill be looking to bet zarkander w/o the fly or in a match bet with binocular i think.

re: Montbazon King's are certainly flying at the moment, whether this form will hold 'til the festival remains to be seen.

Disappointed for you re: Grandouet, agree it was a bet to nothing if lining up - sigh. Zarkandar won cosily in the end at Newbury - incred ride by Ruby. Obv Ruby will be on the Fly come the big day, but given Zarkandar won the Triumph last year with Jacob on no major concerns there.

re: Binocular - one just never knows. I try to stay away from any bet specifically sensitive to the thing to be honest.

Have now added...

Champion Bumper
Moscow Mannon 1pt Win @ 10/1 - Scoring nil points for originality here and not a race I know much about (starting well!) but have read some fairly compelling stats to suggest he should be there or thereabouts on the day. He's posted decent/market leading RPR and TS figures and I like the fight he showed at Galway last summer. Though people may look for 'improvers' I think there's a lot to be said for a horse with proven form in a race where hype often spirals out of all control, so MM has my bumper £££s.

Some Early Thoughts on the Tuesday...

Supreme. I've got Galileo's Choice @ 14s which has been a long term fancy of my own, backed Midnight Game @ 16s mainly due to vibes coming from Paul Jones/Segal. Both should improve for the better ground over here and GC has a whole lot of flat speed having won a group 3 in September.

I've also heard that Tetlami has a ridiculous amount of talent but they can't get him to put it into practice without an absurd amount of hard work. Andrew Tinkler said he had 10 times more ability than he has shown so far.

In the Arkle I keep backing Blackstiarmountain from prices ranging from 42 to 65 on betfair although I've forgotten why. I do think it could run a good race tho if the early ground is good underfoot and the horse shows its absolute best but would obviously need a very poor showing from the principles. Could be more of a place play on the day if everything is right.

Champion Hurdle. Hurricane Fly is the nap of the festival even allowing for Quevega. Binocular will lack the pace for this race nowadays and prefers softer ground than it should get, Zarkandar is now on antibiotics having come out of Newbury spluttering so that can’t be ideal for his chances.
I backed Oscars Well EW @ 20s a long time ago but I'm not too keen. I like to think my EW bets have a chance of winning but theres no reason he can get within 5 lengths of The Fly.

Rock on Ruby interests me @ 15/2 EW in the w/o The Fly market, as he loves the track and should have beaten Binocular at Kempton. Just the worry that the trip could be on the sharp side. The price was 9/1 a couple of weeks back but I wanted to wait to hear what Nicholls had to say and about riding plans. Now I will miss the price again because I want to wait to see which of the Irish protaganists will line up in this race before deciding whether its a bet or not. So I won't end up being on anyway in all probability.

Some gutting news yesterday in that Fists of Fury which I backed for the NH Hunt Chase @ 14s before seeing it come into 8/1 suffered a tendon injury on the gallops and will miss the festival.  :(

Good stuff edgascoigne being on Darlan @ 20s. Got a feeling the horse might prefer flat tracks but couldn't rule it out as could be something special and McManus has been hammering it last couple of days so its safe to say that he got out of his fall at Newbury absolutely fine.

Think he can out gallop and get away from horses like Long Run, Weird Al etc. on flat tracks but won't be charging up the hill at Cheltenham with the others.

Be very interesting to see which race Grand Crus goes for.

If he goes for the Gold Cup I might be tempted to have another look at Join Together for the RSA.

The only bet I've had in a handicap is Ted Spread 12/1 in the County and 11/1 in the Martin Pipe. NRNB.

This is definitely plotted up by the Cheltenham hcap specialists., but the price has gone now.

Although I bet in most of the handicaps, most of my big action is in the non handicaps at Cheltenham.

Whereas usually I mostly bet in handicaps.

How is LONG RUN not mentioned as the winner in this year's gold cup? - Last yr, my friend's nephew told him that it had a great chance to win it, he backed it @ like 33/1 months before or something, I got like 7/2 I think :-( however, I did get the straight forecast with long run & Denman which bumped it up a fair bit..

Can't see anything else beating it this year tbh.. The ONLY thing I would be worried about, would be the jockey, he has spazzed out on the horse in previous races, if he rides him properly I can't see anything other than victory.

my advice would be to bet small for the meeting, then that race lump on everything u have and get out of it for the next 6 months...  HOLD ONE TIME haaha

Mate just posted this up on the other forum I post on

Looks like next friday could be a potentially very good or very bad day.

Further additions from relatively recently...

Mares' Hurdle
Kentford Grey Lady 1pt e/w @ 16s - Surely value in the place part of this bet and a confirmed runner. Highly unlikey to get past Quevega (the clue is in the price) but happy with 4/1 for the place part of the bet.

County Hurdle
Master of Arts 1pt e/w @ 15/1 (had to spread stake around) NRNB - Know nothing about it myself but someone on here tipped it up and anything with this profile from chez Pipe going for a race like this I'm happy to take a double digit price.

Albert Bartlett
Boston Bob 1pt Win @ 9/2 - Nicked a bit of 9/2 with WH this morning - they're not NRNB which is why they're top of the market but looks to me like they're leaving the Neptune to Simonsig and hoping to confirm supremacy over my other fancy Sea of Thunder in the AB. If he goes for this race would expect him closer to 9/4-5/2 on the day.

im loathe to back horses e/w which i think have virtually no chance of winning the race, prob gonna play something in the w/o market for this.

added felix yongor  for the pertemps @ 25s
                                     albert bartlett @ 25s

Can't argue with that tbf.

On that subject, thoughts on Rock on Ruby best price 7/1 w/o the Fly? Also would've thought that the 7/4 about it effectively being in the first 4 might be big, even in a competitive race?

I'm shopping around for good value deals for Cheltenham, a lot of bookies are competing for business.

Corals are doing put a tenner on on line and get a £25 free bet - so I've played that with Rock on Ruby e.way and Riverside Theatre to win in the ryanair.

Paddy Power are doing open a phone account and put £50 on and get a £100 bet. Might play that with Sizing Europe and Big Bucks (playing it safe) next week.

Plus i'm already on Sprinter Sacre at 6/4 in the arkle.

If you haven't got a Ladbrokes acct yet, wait until Tuesday til opening.

They often have cracking opening offers on the first day of the Festival.

One year, bet £100 on day 1 and get a free £100 on the other days.

Is it the weakest Gold Cup for a number of years?

I think it would be unfair to say that it is a weak renewal when you have a young and possibly still-improving horse coming back to defend it's title, and an older former champion showing it's best form for some years.

It would however be fair to say IMO that it is the weakest GC in terms of emerging second-season 'chasers although if Grands Crus were to take it's chance the whole complexion of the race would change.

Will Imperial Cup have a big effect on County Hurdle odds? Is a good run all that is needed and the fact your horse may not win doesn't matter too much as next week is the main event or (as an example) if Ted Spread beat Master of Arts would one shorten and one drift dramatically?

Is this worth putting the lot on Darlan EW? Or just taking a bit on the win?

What is the view on the PP Arkle offer, bets refunded if you back something apart from Sprnter Sacre, and it wins?

a catch somewhere?

I like Cue Card at the prices, you see...

No catch I dont think, get stuck in and make the most of it!

I was trying to work out motive, as it appears to be a crazy offer... I guess if they think its a shoe in, then its not a bad way of breaking even given that majority of business with them will be on other runners?!... Keith or Redarmi will no doubt be able to tell you exactly what they up to... might just be good old fashioned loss leader

I was thinking....early race; gets people to deposit.... even if they only get their money back they are more likely to do it in on rest of the festival than snap withdraw(although that may be bs as they offer it in shop also)

I believe you're only allowed to back one selection to prevent an arb situation and you're only allowed £100 as a refund, but apart from that, no catch, it makes every other horse massively EV+. If you want you can work out the true EV+ of every horse by looking at Betfair.

It is certainly a loss leader yes, you'd have to be incredibly incompetent as a bookie to think this would still make their book on the race EV! As a side note though, I do know of one (now bust) bookie who offered out 1/3 ew odds on some big races at Cheltenham a few years back, with the decision-makers seemingly unaware of just how bad an offer this was from an EV perspective, much to the chagrin of the traders - even with super low limits it was easy to rack up some decent £EV with zero effort.

Offering money back if he wins probably saves people from lumping on it as they look for better prices, could save them money perhaps?

*Could* yes, from an EV (in terms of this one race, obv ignoring business reasons) though it's terrible.

Excited/nervous.

On the rough end of a 5 hour study session, tired.

Buzzing about tomorrow. Going to rise about half 8 (if I can get any sleep at all), check the prices on betfair, shower then stroll down to the shop, buy an rp and some bread. Make some egg on toast and a cup of tea and enjoy morning line (which I have sky +ed). Going to be heaven.

Biggest Fancies tomorrow are Galileo's Choice @ 14s AP, Overturn w/o The Fly EW @ 16s, Maljimar EW @ 12s & Terre Du Vent w/o Quevega EW @ 12s.

Smallest Fancies are all the handicap darts that I've thrown. Bottman @ 60s in the 3rd is the most speculative, I like Mics Delight and Charminster in the last but both handicaps are absolute minefields.

Backed fucking shed loads of horses.

Love nothing more than digging thru big runner handicaps and betting a few at decent prices.

Main each way bet is  Magnanimity in the 14.40, was too big this morning on its Chelters form last year, can easily ignore it's latest form trotting round in small fields on bad ground, today is totally different thing. had a little Baille Annai in the same race.

also bet Steps of freedom in the first with a smaller bet Dylan Ross.

Al Ferof win

In the last I liked Bless the Wings and at a bigger price Harpsy Cord.

Will also have the easy double on Hurricane Fly and Quevega.

several each way trixies and an each way Lucky 15 for good measure too, throw in a Placepot and I am ready to go.

Also had to double my dads bet, who is visiting for the week. He is called Mick, was watching Cinderella with the kids yesterday and my mum has grey hair.

His each way yankee therefore consists of

Cinders and Ashes
Our Mick
Kentford grey lady
Mics Delight

I called him a knobhead for picking his selections like a girl...then doubled the bet just in case.  :)up

good luck everyone, lets hope we get a few tales of joy between us.

also bet Steps of freedom in the first with a smaller bet Dylan Ross.

Your Dads having a good start. If picking selections like that make him a girl well you can chop my bits off!

Paddy Power Racing ‏ @pphorseracing

Looking at our big Special, if Sprinter Sacre wins we'll be refunding about £2 million. If Al Ferof wins we'll pay out about £5 million.

lies

For once I believe them.

20,000 people having £100 bets on sucha good offer doesn't seem impossible by any stretch of the imagination.

absolutely, but at 11/2 or 9/2 each way, three places paid in a field of six when the two outsiders are 20/1 and 100/1 it was massive each way value in the bet put up by Keith given the Paddy Power offer too.

Red is right , even big value doesn't always win

Rock on Ruby interests me @ 15/2 EW in the w/o The Fly market, as he loves the track and should have beaten Binocular at Kempton. Just the worry that the trip could be on the sharp side. The price was 9/1 a couple of weeks back but I wanted to wait to hear what Nicholls had to say and about riding plans. Now I will miss the price again because I want to wait to see which of the Irish protaganists will line up in this race before deciding whether its a bet or not. So I won't end up being on anyway in all probability.

oh no.

It travelled very well last time in the race won by Last Instalment and I've a sneaky suspicion the better ground might suit.

Along for the ride.

Good man but I think the word has leaked out though as it's drifting barge-like on BF....

Well, I have replensihed funds with the Inter, Liverpool, Bayern treble enhanced by Mr Power and am ready to try again tommorrow.  No multiple race selections.  I have ended topping up "The New One" - ends up as a sad state of affairs when your main bet of the day is based on some bloke in a chip shop on a blonde thread - however since that post I have heard that they are pretty sweet on the horse from a couple of other sources and with Mr powers four places I have topped up so ended up with £100 E/W at 16/1 - 14/1

Added:

Henry the Viking £30 EW
Dare Me £20 EW
Edeymi £20 EW

Obviously thrown in millionaire £5ew doubles, £3 ew trebles and a £2 ew Acca

Then unpredictably a £30 Trixie on Gran Crus, Simonsig, and Sizing Europe - have looked through the races looking for alternatives to no availe - can't see past the red ink.

I have obviously added a safety next £2 acca for £300k as I'd be gutted if they all win.  Off for a meeting at 12.30 about doing some work for a few months to replensih funds and keep my hand in - may need to after Cheltenham

Good luck all.

I did actually laugh out loud there mate.

I might well regret this in the morning....  in Cheltenham week 2009 I had a slightly strange dream that a gay guy I used to work with at Hills, that had worked on the racing desk for about 15 years was standing in a toilet cubicle as I was sat using the facilities. He then started to hand me single sheets of toilet roll to use and eventually handed me a sheet that had the words 'Cappa Bleu' on it..

I knew this horse was favourite at that time for the Foxhunters. That week I spent all the afternoons in the local watching the racing and the day before that race I told the guys that had been there with me all week about this dream. I don't drink, but they do so by teatime they were calling it my 'homoerotic dream' tip and vowing to have a bet on it coz it was so comm.

The next day the pub had about 30 more people in to watch the Gold cup shoot out between Kauto Star and Denman and the Foxhunters was the race after that one, everyone was buzzing and word got around about this now ' proper gay dream that this guy has had' about Cappa Bleu in the next race. Most of em are pissed as farts and just about everyone has now backed this horse. I am getting a bit miffed now as the banter was now a bit near the knuckle and I didn't actually know most of them.

Of course the horse wins at 11/2 and I am now getting drinks bought for me and slaps on the back and asked if I am going to dream about my 'new friend' again tonight, which was now all in good spirits. About 3 months later I am walking down our main street and some guy I do not know says to me' alright mate, have you had any more dreams about that gay bloke again'

So if I can put that forward as an excuse for having a bet at Cheltenham, your 'there's a guy goes down the chip shop' one is deffo worth a bet.

I would like to add that only someone confident with their straight sexuality would tell that story!!  ;bumwiggle;

Thats made me rofl.....I had a similar dream about Cool Ground, not a homophobic one and had some relevance as I was good mates with Nick Mitchell, whose dad trained it at Whitcome before he got kicked out and I think Reg Akehurst trained it when it beat The Fellow I think - hazy memories it was 20 years ago ffs. Won at 50s, often talked about as worst Gold Cup winner with Nortons Coin, but the horse had some turn of foot and will always be close to my heat along with Katanatic and Kribensis. God I am getting on.....

Btw - mean to offend who posted The New One, I can't remember and will look now - I know it was at front end of thread and I blind backed it and Keith's super shrewd Midnight tip at 25s

After a fairly poor day one, my main fancies at the prices on Day 2:

1.30 Blenheim Brook
2.05 Monksland. Cotton Mill also a good chance.
2.40 Join Together @ 10s Antepost but couldn't back it now.
4.00 Consilierge EW @ whatever price you want.
4.40 Royal Bonsai

Sigh.

Don't really fancy too many today really. Feel a bit shrewd as I backed one of the pricewise horses earlier in the week, Silverhand, so that's the main bet. Taken small ew on sous les cieux in the 2.05 and had to have a bit ew on The new one in the bumper as it was well tipped up a few weeks ago and I would hate to miss out

good luck today everyone

Think it's a combo of both really.  A lot got hammered yesterday when Hurricane Fly didn't win.  Others got hammered by everything else.  Rock on Ruby saved my bacon on the day and got me out ahead...just.  Half afraid to get too excited about any of them today.

My treble for today is Simonsig, Gran Crus and Sizing Europe.  Have The New One for the laugh in the last too obv.

I like to have an e/w in each race to play against the fav as well.  Really liked Bobs Worth, but didn't like the odds for an e/w so Call the Police is the one for me in the next race.

If he went for that job now he wouldn't get it in a zillion years, as is the case with a lot of sports broadcasters its a case of once you are in you are in and it takes a lot for you to lose that job.

Take a look at Sky Sports news and work out how Allan Mullary, Ian Rush et al keep getting interviewed when spurs or liverpool stuff is being discussed. I mean who seriously remembers Alan Mullery in his prime and who wants to know what he thinks anyway?

After Grand Cru getting beat this thread could get super quiet.

For those still here, and who wish to follow my super 'pick horses in common with blonde' system which is well in profit after one race, here's where our money will be going later.

3.20 - I'm So Lucky (maybe - quite dubious this one)
4.00 - Veiled (brag, thin)
4.40 - Gorgeous Sixty (Tikay, obv)
5.15 - Cool George (Bedi)

have also backed - Abergavenny, Kazilan and have had to have a little on Moscow mannon after some info but already knowing the result i've had it in a straight forecast with the new one.

Complete shambles with the flag at the last fence there.

Amateur.

1 more added to the unemployed figures me thinks.

They clearly intended that the fence was to be jumped, just not on the inside where the jockey was (hence moving the boards from across the whole fence to just the inside).

Seeing as all the horses then went round, they're pretending that was the intention - that head steward prick just interviewed was being so evasive on what the intention was.

Would have been interesting to see what would have happened had one horse jumped and one went round.

I must confess that I'm not on The New One either due to having a little bit of 25/1 Horatio Hornblower ew.

Still funking for everyone to win at least the place part of their bets ;)

I don't think that's allowed Andrew, I've never ever seen half of a fence dolled-off.

If it isn't allowed then I've no idea whay they moved the boards.

Has anyone seen a situation like this before (where all the boards were one one little bit of the fence?)

Oh hi der - did anyone order a 25/1 EW coo?

Just looking Camels EW Lucky 31, so shrewd and I feel he and we have been so unlucky looking back - Kentford Grey 7/2 and Big Zeb 13/10 awesome place prices, and Binoculour and Al Ferof edged out in very unlucky circumstances - was just a top bet and if Oscar lands a place tomorrow still not a disaster with the luck against us. Been looking very closely at the form for the Gold Cup and think there ae very good reasons to oppose the front two in the betting.  Everyone loves Kauto and for that reason it is half the price it should be even on this years form and that is before taking into account the fact that it has had an interrupted preparation.  If you take away the fact that it has beaten Long Run twice this year (and I will explain in a minute why I think that isn't as good as it looks) it has won a couple of small field chases and the 3m around Kempton on boxing day has always been ideal conditions for the horse.  Added to the fact it is now 12yo and horses are deteriorating at a serious speed at this age....it could literally be 90% of the horse it was on Boxing Day by now.  It should be 8/1 imo.  Moving onto Long Run.....I heard the other day that they sent the horse to Yogi Breisner (a horse whisperer type I suppose is the best description) as recently as last week to look at its jumping and when you go back through the old race tapes it certainly seems to be overjumping a lot of fences this year.  Do you really want to be taking 2/1 about a horse in the toughest race of the year thats trainer is sufficiently worried enough about to send to improve its jumping a week before the race?

At a combined 10/11 or so i think they have to be opposed and the one I like is Quel Espirit who has fallen a couple of times around here but was going very well when it came down in last years RSA Chase and they have done the right thing with the horse giving it a couple of races to get its confidence back and then scoring a very decent looking win in the Hennessy last time.  Everytime the horse has got around it has won over fences so it isn't lacking for speed.  I think 16/1 is a gift but wouldn't put anyone off any of the rags in the race.

This - I have bokked it for you.  I have backed Sommersby.  Also still fairly sweet on Peddlers and despite the doubts think 7/2 will be polarised and either look huge - should have taken the 5s.

I also fancy Oscar Whiskey EW - although in my heart of hearts I think it has a less than 20% chance of beating Big Bucks.  Have added Midnight Appeal and Crack Away Jack

Am off to pick up dry cleaning before leaving at 8am tomorrow for the big one - very very excited about the whole Kauto show, just going to be an amazing occasion

I've gone for Cristal Bonus, but with no huge reason for it- Peddlers has been backed more this morning, but Timeform doesn't rate him by the looks of it. Best punter in my office has gone for 'For Non Stop', but again don't know his reasons. GL to all today!

Edit: some late money for Zaynar I notice...

That bet on Cristal Bonus was the worst £20 I've ever spent.

I got more value out of the tenner I threw in the bin on Tuesday - at least I got a story out of that.

Title: Re: The Cheltenham 2012 Thread
Post by: Laxie on March 15, 2012, 01:44:03 PM
Checked my emails before that race and had one from Laddies saying money back if your horse comes second in the first race.  So I put my first ever win only bet on Sir Des Champs thinking he'd prolly end up second, but if he wins it's a bonus.  That was a nice wee bonus.

Solix was disappointing though.  Had a feeling this morning that Henderson's had his day yesterday and won't do much today, but really liked that horse for a decent place.  Ah well.  NEXT!

He came from nowhere in last year's race to abso crush it, then cleans up today.  Will definitely be one to watch for Gold Cup.

And Ruby is having a ridic bad week of it.  I've mostly stayed away from any horse he's on purely because he's on it.

Following yesterday's McCririck discussion, WTF is Lesley Graham still doing on TV.

She was never any good, has an annoying voice and seems to know fk all about racing (her efforts at tipping seem to amount to picking the favourite and saying 'I think he's got a chance today').

Can't decide whether to go balls out tomorrow or just consolidate and have a steady few.

Probably balls out unfortunately :(

Just had an e-mail from a tipping team claiming to be 133 points up on the day.
Perhaps, they stuck 150 units on Big Buck's?

Thank goodness for a tremendous day1 and a fortunate break-even day2 which leaves me still in profit.

I've been sat pondering this before I started work and am going to just be sensible I think......

I've got 2ante post bets which if they both win leave me up for the week a little and if not I've had a great week railing every race.

I'd be annoyed if I went on the chase and the hole grew bigger so I wanted to chase on random stuff once tomorrow is over :D

Listed for tomorrow, not great odds either.  Unless it wins, then it's terrific odds.

oops my apologies Ralph, I had bet in NRNB and saw the stake had been returned, I assumed it had missed the cut as it was settled before the race was run.

Don't be daft Phil there's no apology necessary. I heard the trainer left it until the last minute to withdraw hoping that it would indeed be balloted out and then he wouldn't have to pay the final entry fee.

Better day yesterday, but not that much up for the week - all my winners have been shortish prices, and had 2 horses in too many races.

Got Ubi Ace in the County Hurdle, Boston Bob in the Albert Bartlett, Weird Al in the main, Salsify in the Foxhunter, and Kumbeshwar in the last.
Think Long Run will win the Gold Cup often enough, and it's a big ask for Kauto, but would be amazing to see the legend win it's probable last race.

Will obviously add loads of no-hopers once I get in a hole mid afternoon!

Which is the better offer?

Paddy's 'money back if your horse finishes 2nd to favourite' (but only pay first 3 for EW) or backing with someone who pays first 4?

My thought would be the extra place is better (as finishing 4th is more likely than finishing 2nd behind a specific horse (especially if that horse is around 6/1)) but maybe I'm missing something.

Totally gutted about this.  The more I have learnt about the game over the years the less often I am convinced that something is a really great bet...maximum material...the sort of bet to get excited about.  It now maybe happens once or twice a year at the very most and almost never about a 20-1 shot but I had that feeling about Quel Espirit today.  Everything about the shape of the race and the way they had brought the horse along just screamed out at me.  Gutted.  Anyone know what happened?

On Midnight Chaser thanks to a tip on here a while back, but also did an e/w of my own on Synchronised.  That's the Gold Cup sorted.

Also have a wee e/w treble on Pearl Swan, Long Run and Astracad.  Don't like the fact that Ruby is on Pearl as I'm kinda gone off him for this week, but he's managed a couple during the festival and I really like the horse.  Fingers crossed.

Have an e/w pick or two for each race and will probably toss some money on the greys as I see them.

Main bets are:
Grumeti
Local Hero
Brindisi Breeze
Midnight Chase/Synchronised
On the Fringe/Enter Paradise
Open Hearted/Changing Times
Astracad

Good Luck Us!!!

I just heard that the jockey was not happy with him when riding out this morning and another report said that he pulled up slightly lame. I get the feeling that it's not a major setback but that is purely my impression.

I havnt been able to make the festival for a few years mostly too much on job wise and couldnt get the time off but after watching this week and loving every moment, win or lose, next year is gonna be a must do.

I love The Cheltenham Festival.

The only one of my mates horses he put up that I didn't back was Bellvano in the last b/c I already had a bullseye on Cassidy in the last and that just about summed up the week for me :(

Yeah bit gutted now that the time I went down on Gold Cup day in a box I was only interested in the free bar and didn't really care about the racing. Would love to go back again now I actually can appreciate how amazing it all is and take in the atmosphere that is no doubt incredible.
