Title: Super League 2012
Post by: kinboshi on February 03, 2012, 12:15:20 PM
Starts again tonight.  Warrington favourites to top the league again?  Any predictions?

This sounds interesting/innovative/a waste of time (delete as apporpriate):  http://www.skysports.com/opinion/story/0,,12532_7475191,00.html

Quote
During each game we won't just be collecting the stats and data, but now the information will be fed into a computer to try to predict the winning team. As most of you will know from watching sport, things change before the score does - a certain momentum gets built up before the points are registered.

We're going to use a formula to predict the points difference between the two teams at the final whistle. This will be continuously updated as the game progresses. We'll collect data about which team has possession, how well they use it and just how well they defend when they don't have the ball. This will flash up on the screen on our 'Margin Meter' and, based on the way that the game has gone, predict who will win and by how many points.

During the off-season we've asked a leading expert in this field to help us to try to identify the patterns and trends that occur in a Super League game. Dr Bill Gerrard has looked at more than 700 team performances in Super League over the last few seasons and analysed the key performance indicators that teams record.

The posh term for doing this is "data mining" or "predictive analytics", which is the sort of thing that supermarkets do to sell their goods, insurance companies do to calculate their polices or the weather people do to make a forecast.

So at least we'll be able to moan about our sides running at below EV.

Usual suspects at the top again this season. Can't any other team apart from Saints, Wigan, Warrington or Leeds winning the lot.

I know Leeds will be better this year, our key players fit, nearly all the team signed long term contracts.

Funny how they the league turned down betfairs 750k offer to sponsor the league instead opting for Stoddards one, where they have branding on over 100 trucks instead of payment? erm.

Going to see Rhino's vs Hull tonight hope its not going to be too cold or might just stay in pub :)

Definitely.  Super League has a decent following across the country, but a lot of these people only watch it on TV rather than travel to the games.  The more on TV, the better!

You can't whack a game of rugby league.

Any tips will be well received guys.

Like other sports League tends to get some freaky results. Big priced underdogs always worth a punt on. Always getting teams 10/1 and bigger away at one of the big teams pulling off a result out of no where :) give it a few weeks and we will start looking to bet.

Yes I think almost every bet I had last season was on a team getting a good start, locality always a big bonus for getting under points or on teams getting starts in the bad weather too.

My betting tip would be to avoid betting on round 1 lol.

Might have a flutter on wakey tonight at +2 really like the look of our team and fancy vince mellars to score first.

A good bet maybe on number of penalties awarded, always loads in first match of the season but nO idea what the bookies are offering.

Really looking forward to tonight

Salford vs Cas tough one this at two new coaches and loads of new players. But Millward is shrewd and i expect the slight outsiders Cas to win 2.3 on betdaq.

Pretty easy for cas, as suspected Salford poor.  2/2 bets will look at tomorrow for another bet

Weather is fuking horrid and it must be depressing having to play in Bradford, so going for upset today bradford to beat catalans at Odsal. 2.5 on exchanges.

Aint listend to any of the games today but from the scores bradford got battered. Was almost tempted on hudds but blimey didnt really expect it.

1st week results lol :) hopefully sign of things to come.

2/3

Huddersfield deserved to win from the commentary I listened to.  Wigan made a lot of errors, and Huddersfield were resolute in defence, and Brough creating a lot going forward.

yeah just watched the highlights, still good win for hudds.

Blimey catalans had loads out and abs. destroyed bradford down the middle.  Bradford might be worse than Widnes this season.

Leeds most probs unchanged, Wigan with a few suspended/injured normally I would edge for Wigan win, but if Leeds are decent odds will back them.

I saw the highlights of Wigan's game last week and they also mentioned the amount of errors they committed. Could be an idea to put a line through that defeat ?

Yeah, while they deserved to lose, they made so many errors and mistakes if they can tighten up and finish their set of 6's then they should be alot better. A few chaps who saw Leeds Rhinos said they looked excellent and alot better then last year. The 2 games we had vs Wigan last season in the league were definitely solid performances and we always tend to do well against them.

Leeds are 2.5 on Betdaq and in what I see as an evens game its worth a punt just for fun.

Title: Re: Super League 2012

The problem is that rugby league is often about who makes the fewest mistakes, gives away the fewest penalties, completes their sets, etc.  If a team is making mistakes it might not just be a case of being able to tighten things up, but could be down to something more radical that needs to be improved.

Not that worried though, as Wigan came flying out of the blocks last season and in the league that made little difference at the business end.  Leeds seem to time their peak perfectly last season (as did St Helens), and I think other teams will take a lot of notice of that this year.

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: Acidmouse on February 10, 2012, 01:37:36 PM
The coverage on sky now is ridiculous, so many shows its great. Watched the weekly wrap up show where it showed all the stats for the teams last year. Leeds improved so much in the play-offs is was amazing. Like 97% tackles completed up from 93% from the regular season. Like Kin says only takes a few tweaks, cut out the mistakes and the games as good as won.

Not sure I would back Wigan 4/7 tomorrow tho!

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: kinboshi on February 10, 2012, 01:47:00 PM
I wouldn't back Wigan tomorrow.  Still some new players to gel into the side and with Carmont and Farrell out, there'll be a few youngsters who'll be called upon to step up.

Hughes will probably play in Carmont's place, and I'd like to see Mellor get a run of games as he's one hell of a talent.

Got a feeling that Wigan will be really difficult to beat this week.
Also think saints will take the Salford to the cleaners tonight, weather permitting.
Some really close games this week though

LOL great bet.  St Helens were massive favourites and you take notice of a silly gimmick that they're trialling based on the possession and completion rate stats of the game up till that point.  Salford had massively over-performed up to that point, and Saints hadn't really started playing.  Anyone with any knowledge of the game would know Saints were going to win.  Have a look at the bet EvilPie put on before the match.

As for your assessment of the sport being a joke, bit of a joke assessment based on a sample size of less than one game!

Wigan on top in the first half, but a try for Leeds and it's all on again. Wigan score first in the second half and it'll be more comfortable.

Wigan players a million times better than last week's performance.

Hope you're not including the forward pass that Hall threw to Burrow that he hacked on.

Stevo going on about the replay showing it wasn't forward, when it was clear that Hall was 2m in front of the line when the pass was made, and when Burrow connected with it, it was 4m in front of the line.

Tough one to call.

Leeds have the home advantage, have played two league games whereas Manly haven't started their season yet and haven't had a warmup game over here.

Leeds will obviously need to play better than they did last week, but I think they had one eye on tonight when they played Wigan.

Leeds are the underdogs at the moment getting a 4 point start in the betting, but that just shows how close this one is to call. If they get off to a good start, I can see Leeds winning, and let's hope Leeds can get the ball out to the centres and wingers where they can do some damage.

Don't know if everyone's fit for this one?

Smith is out but apart from that Leeds should have fully fit squad.

Close one, anything can happen.

I will be in a few local pubs before heading into the ground 7:55 :) come on the rhinos.

I thought a sin-binning would have been fair. It wasn't malicious, but it was definitely a shoulder into his head - and as Carney said in the commentary, if it had been a swinging arm that connected like that, it would have been punished in a similar way.

There appears to be a big reluctance to use "sin-binning" in Rugby League. I don't see any good reason for this. I don't have any statistics to hand but I can recall very few instances.
Putting a player "on report" generally seems to be deemed sufficient which has always surprised me. It doesn't punish the offending side during the game at all. It's of very little consolation to know that a player may miss the next few games for his club when he has just taken the head off one of your own player's shoulders.

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: kinboshi on February 19, 2012, 08:59:28 PM
The putting on report is often a complete kop-out by a weak ref.

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: MereNovice on February 19, 2012, 09:04:03 PM
That's what I thought.
It seems an odd thing all round.
Does it mean that if someone does something really bad and doesn't get "put on report" that he can't be punished after the game?
If this isn't the case, then why bother having this "rule" at all apart from, as you say, giving a referee a cop-out so that he can show that he's taken some action when he really hasn't done anything.

Castleford head coach Ian Millward is on compassionate leave following the sudden death of his son Robbie at the age of 19. A club statement said: "Robbie was taken ill at his home in Leigh on Sunday morning and was then rushed to Bolton Hospital where he died later in the evening."

Very sad news.  RIP.

Was surprised when a penalty was given and is not a sending off. Also don't think it is what the sin bin is there for either. However Tommy Lee should have walked in Saturdays game

It's a tough weekend to predict tbh.

Fancy my team at home on Saturday to the Bulls giving 2 start but will be close.
Huddersfield seem a decent bet at London giving 10.
Hull at Salford giving 6 start.
Depending on team selected Leeds giving 22 seems to be value

Anyone got any bets for this weekend?

Leeds Rhinos v Warrington Wolves
St. Helens v Hull FC
Catalan Dragons v Salford City Reds
Hull Kingston Rovers v Bradford Bulls
London Broncos v Castleford Tigers
Wakefield Wildcats v Huddersfield Giants
Widnes Vikings v Wigan Warriors

Wigan and Huddersfield to win by big margins, but the Leeds v Warrington should be a cracker.

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: kinboshi on March 09, 2012, 04:07:06 PM
Wigan are resting a few players against Widnes, and the 19-man squad contains 15 players who have come through the youth system at Wigan, which is good to see.  Stefan Marsh is a 16th, but he'll be playing for Widnes where he's on loan.

Wigan Warriors 19 Man Squad
Sam Tomkins, Josh Charnley, Darrell Goulding, Brett Finch, Michael McIlorum, Lee Mossop, Harrison Hansen, Gareth Hock, Sean O'Loughlin, Jeff Lima, Liam Farrell, Chris Tuson, Epalahame Lauaki, Anthony Gelling, Joe Mellor, Jack Hughes, Matthew Russell (EvilPie), Logan Tomkins, Tom Spencer

With Roberts, Fielden, and Carmont to come back into the squad - and of course Richards who's being rested for this one, the Wigan squad is looking pretty strong this season.  Looking forward to seeing Russell, Mellor and Logan get a run out in the first team.  Mellor and Logan were out on loan at Widnes last season, so it would be good for them to get a run out on Sunday.

Title: Re: Super League 2012

From Sky Bet:

Leeds (Scratch) 10/11 V Warrington (Scratch) 10/11
St Helens (-10) 10/11 V Hull (+10) 10/11

Catalans (-16) V 10/11 Salford (-16) 10/11
London (+2) 10/11 V Castleford (-2) 10/11
Hull KR (-10) 10/11 V Bradford (+10) 10/11

Widnes (+36) 10/11 V Wigan (-36) 10/11
Wakefield (+12) 10/11 V Huddersfield (-12) 10/11

The value for me there is maybe with Castleford and Huddersfield, and I'd like to say Wigan :D

London to beat Cas?  They've been really poor this season.  My Dad and brother go to a lot of the home games (a season ticket is something like £40) as they live about 45 minutes from the ground.  They don't seem too impressed so far with London's performances, and even less impressed with the numbers going to watch them play.

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: BulldozerD on March 09, 2012, 05:13:00 PM
Cas are no great shakes and I don't expect London to keep playing so shit with the players they have. Apparently they played well in their home game vs saints in week 1, so I would expect some kind of positive reaction from London after their shambles last week.

As tends to happen in RL, teams don't tend to follow a dire performance with another one, unless they are Widnes.

Yes they get shit crowds, but that shouldn't affect the result

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: kinboshi on March 09, 2012, 05:16:31 PM
No, the crowd thing was just an afterthought, and I was thinking that the London franchise might not last very much longer the way it's going - which is a shame.

6 minutes gone, Widnes 0 - 12 Wigan.  That's with no Tomkins or Richards in the side.

Mad game with 10 minutes to go 36-36!

Wigan resting Richards, Tomkins, O'Loughlin and Leuluai all in the same game looks to be very ill-advised.

Widnes go ahead with a drop goal, 37-36...

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: kinboshi on March 11, 2012, 04:41:16 PM
Widnes win.  No one saw that one coming.

I thought it'd be closer than the bookies had it, but thought the Wigan side would have had enough to win it comfortably.  The gamble to leave out those four players who are arguably the spine of the team blew up for Wane and quite dramatically.

Wigan v Warrington tonight.  Should be a good game, and Wigan should win it.  I'd hope the Wigan defence is better tonight, but still reckon that there'll be a fair few tries scored tonight in a high-scoring game.

Pat Richards needs one more point to go beyond the 2,000 point mark for Wigan. Expecting him to get a few more than that tonight.

Silverwood was the best ref last season.  This season, he's not far off the worst.  Terrible.

How has Morley not been blown up for his high shots?  Instead he's penalised other players on both sides for high shots that didn't exist!

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: kinboshi on March 23, 2012, 09:03:32 PM
Richards needs to be 'fixed' at half-time, or he could end up being a weakness with his injury.  Wigan's forwards are on top, but looking a little vulnerable on the edges defensively.  Should be a cracking second half.

Title: Re: Super League 2012

Wigan penalised for the leading forearm in the carry - fair enough.  Then Westwood comes in with a swinging arm and ends up punching his own player in the face.

Silverwood puts it on report!!!  He saw it, why put it on report - send him off ffs!

Ridiculous refereeing throughout.

How was that interference by Charnley on that kick?  He was going for the ball and didn't even touch the defender who then knocks it forward and it's picked up by a player in an offside position.

The ball was stolen from Finch, and the ref sends them back to play the ball again.  Utterly stupid.

Hate it when a game is ruined by bad refereeing.

Silverwood MOTM.

That was Alibert who gave Warrington 7 tackles to win the match, but other than that he's been very good this season. In contrast, Silverwood has gone from being the best ref in the league to being arguably the worst this season.

At least I can look forward to Leeds battering saints tomorrow.

Leeds don't have McGuire and are playing a schoolboy.

Even given that, I can't see why Leeds are only 2 point favourites.

Wigan could be without nine front-line players - including England full-back Sam Tomkins and captain Sean O'Loughlin - for their Super League derby at St Helens on Good Friday,

erm me thinks i bet on saints.

Tomkins is fit but yes, lots of the pack missing including crucially O'Loughlin and Mossop:

Fielden, Lauaki, Mossop,
Farrell, Flower
O'Loughlin

A whole pack missing!

Saints have a few players out, but not on this scale.  Saints have got to be big favourites for this one.

Has been brilliant for a good few years now, but had an injury last year unfortunately.

McIlorum has been the biggest improvement this season, and having a cracking game again today so far.

Close ;)

Solid performance again from Wigan, and hopefully Wane has steadied the ship now.

Goulding is having a good season, and in a position that was considered a problem coming into this season. Hopefully he can avoid injuries and finally get to deliver on his promise as he has been so far this year. Gelling had a decent game too. Important to have Carmont back, and he was MOTM today. A difficult player to replace when he does leave.

Catalans gave Warrington a good spanking today. A tough place to go and play, especially with the Dragons in the form they are showing at home.

It's a mans game, obvious difference not settled during game and Chase clears this up post match. I am not condoning his actions but it beats the Viera v Keane tunnel bust ups. No hand bags here! Bang and ask questions later.

In truth he had a mare of a game and it's petulance on his behalf! He's wasting his time at Cas as they are not going to finish in the top 8 and as daft as it sounds may be a better TEAM without him, instead of a one man act who decides to turn up when he wants!

Yes, it's a man's game. His shot was nasty and cheap and nothing to be proud of at all. Deserves a long ban. Others seem to get away with nasty shots like this, but this was deliberate and I'm guessing he'll get a ban for quite a few games.

I agree the ban is pathetic but the second part of your statement doesn't hold water, it's like results orientated thinking.

As far as I know he was just charged with a Grade C offence, which is not the worst you can be charged with. Watched the replay and it is clear attack at the head with elbow/forearm, not a mistimed shoulder charge as our Cas friends seem to believe.

Title: Re: Super League 2012

I am one of said Cas friends, it explains why I missed it as I was so infuriated by not scoring for the umpteenth set I turned over as soon as possession was handed over. If I am being diplomatic on the incident, I have no comment!

To be fair I have seen worse that has not gone punished at all. But there is no justification for a man of steels actions.

I'd be interested to know what you've seen that's worse than that and has gone unpunished (in the pro game). I love a good hard hit but there is no place in the game for shots like that imo. I would have thought 5/6 matches would be more appropriate.
Apparently Rangi and the victim are quite close friends, so he apologised.

Thats getting close to the cassidy one i posted earlier on this thread on morley...close..

Leading with elbow, arm in someones face is bad...it needs to be a couple of months ban. But saying that so does the spear tackle that only got some bradford player a 2 match ban on peacock the other week. He was so mad he went into their changing room after, he could hardly walk for days and lucky to get away from it. The whole system is fuked, JJB gets 3 match ban for pushing the ref out of the way to make a tackle.....

Rangi is a little rat imo, he's played shite for most of this season.

Yeah, sorry I broke your jaw in two places and you've had to had a plate inserted to help it mend, mate.

Ablett's forearm smash into Tomkins' jaw a few seasons back saw him avoid any punishment during the match, but he got a three match ban as well. Deliberately attacking another player's head (in a premeditated fashion) seems to be worth three matches.

I've seen lesser offences given stronger punishment.

Must be drinking buddies! As for far worse incidents there have been a number, the one what stands out was Keith Senior playing for the Sheffield Eagles decking Barrie Jon Mather down the lane (this was assault) in a cup game on the box and I can not even remember a penalty being given. Yeah this is going back a few years, but I often witness acts of violence often by the same offenders. A few names mentioned already often get targeted because they are seen to dish it out!

Glad to see the friendly nature of your post once I mention my colours!

Apologies for not being able to remember any injustices, I asked a friend whose a Saints fan to think of a few and the only ones he could mention were against Long. I guess we only remember the ones against our teams as we feel aggrieved.

So I searched you tube for various hits and ended up on a Terry O Connor v Gordon Tallis punch up from 97. This is made watchable by Tallis's story at the end of the video footage, plus the Aussie commentators are good value. I will link it up later, as for the Cassidy hit, that was brutal but I think it was a case of what comes around goes around.

Anyone see value in Catalan at 2/1 tonight?

Disgusting refereeing, making a mockery of the game.

Featherstone holding down, not getting back 10m, markers not square, and nothing given. Worse than that Sam taken out in the air, no penalty. Two men in the tackle and the ball is stolen, no penalty.

he commentary team trying to make the match something it isn't, and they're as big a joke as Silverwood in the middle.

Featherstone were fine, they played well and were doing all they could to win. But they were being abetted by the clown Silverwood who was doing his damndest to try and help Rovers win. Can't really be critical of Featherstone, as they were getting away with the infringements, why not continue to break the rules!?

Should be a cracking match tonight between Huddersfield and Wigan, with only points-scored separating these two at the top of the league.

Although Huddersfield beat Wigan in the first game of the season, I think Wigan will win tonight as they're in good form and only missing Richards, Prescott and Flower from the squad tonight. Bookies have it in favour of Wigan by about 5 points.

If only Gelling was a winger. Going to be a great player, but not on the wing. Again, if Richards had been playing we'd be quite a few points clear. Miss his kicking too, obviously.

Great game so far, and both sides showing why they're top of the league. Even Thaler is having a good game with the whistle. Still anyone's game though. Going to be a tough second half.

Ridiculous refereeing decisions again.  The forward pass yesterday in the Hull match, and then today the Diskin try for Bratford against Leeds should have been ruled out because Diskin knocked on, and even if he hadn't he was in front of Jeffries who kicked it on and Diskin was in front of him and therefore offside.  I even think it was knocked on before then by a Bratford player when Peacock was going to catch the ball.  Then two blatantly forward passes that were ignored.

Making a mockery of the game.

Widness are a disgrace and I really hate the franchise bullshit, sky harp on about how good its been for catalan but look at the others that failed.....the games run by monkeys..

Agree with all of that. A brilliant sport, some brilliant players, and yet it's refereed by idiots and Sky are trying to make it into a circus at times.

The refs are terrible. end to the Wakey match was a farce, hull kr scored off a pass that was 2 yards forward and Leeds get back into their game with a nice NFL pass from Webb for McGuire's second try.
Wigan were truly awesome though. Might have sent 3 to bin in that fight but 3 red cards, seriously fuck off Thaler.

Yea and maguires scored 3 'legit' tries today hasn't he.

Yes he has, but one of his four was from a forward pass.

Obv got his 4th after I'd wrote this.

He reffed decently in the match, except for the red cards. There was a punch up in the State of Origin match mid-week and that just resulted in one sin-binning for the third man in who punched someone from behind. The others who were smacking each other just got a talking to.

Not sure why last night's were all reds.

Mossop landed a beauty on Magennis too, he pretty much deserved it.
The sin bin is for incidents like these, red cards should be for really serious stuff imo

I thought Hock and McCarthy-Scarsbrook should have had a talking to about their scuffle, and that Magennis and Tuson should have both been sin-binned for their fight (which was after the initial dust-up).  Not sure any were reds, and must admit I missed Mossop's punch - so will have to watch it again :D

Wellens would have got involved too, but he was so slow yesterday by the time he got there, everyone had stopped fighting...

Charges:

Shaun Magennis (Grade D) of St Helens, and Chris Tuson (Grade C) Lee Mossop (Grade B) Gareth Hock (Grade B) all from Wigan.

Wigan's Lee Mossop has until 11am on Tuesday to submit an early guilty plea.

Tonight's match should be a close one.  With a full squad I'd favour Wigan with the rugby they've been playing recently both in attack and defence.

But with Hock, Mossop, Hansen, Tuson, Flower, Prescott (and of course Fielden) missing from the pack, Wigan aren't going to be able to build a platform as easily.  The starting pack should be strong enough, but it's the interchanges where there might be a problem.  I can see Leeds finishing as the much stronger side.

I'm going for a draw!

Absolutely stunning performance. Tomkins rightfully MOTM, but the whole side were phenomenal.  Hats off to Wane and Harris for developing the side into what it's become this season. Even with half-a-dozen forwards missing, the Wigan pack still dominated and the halves and backs were clinical. Defence and discipline were impeccable. Leeds were miles away from where they were last season and I'm sure they'll improve before the end of the season, but they're lacking depth in the squad I think.

Great result for Salford too, coming back from 20-0 down to beat Catalan.

Leeds are about the same they were for 90% of last season, just got lucky and hit form at right time...not this season..

Not st Helens though, and if Leeds don't sort themselves out soon, not them either (talking about the cup).  Also, if the likes of Warrington drop points like they did at the weekend, that makes the league leaders shield more likely to go to Wigan. So that's two out of the three trophies that look very much like they could be going to either Wigan or Warrington. Also, although Leeds won the Grand final from outside the top 3 last season, that was the exception rather than the rule, and I'd bet on one of the teams that finishes in the top two will win the Grand Final this year.

Not sure I buy the idea that Wigan can't keep up their current form either. Against saints and Leeds they came up against  against two sides underperforming and made them pay. Yes, Wigan were good, but the opposition were far from their best. Before we talk about Wigan peaking to early I think they need to be playing at their peak against the more in-form sides like Catalan (especially at their place) and Warrington. Then we'll see just how well Wigan are actually playing.

Out of interest, did these ex-pros say that individual players were peaking too early, or the team as a whole? If it's the team as a whole does that include virtually the entire pack who didn't play last weekend as well as Richards who has also been missing, or just the players who played against Leeds?

Like I said, I honestly don't know how well Wigan are performing at the moment in absolute terms. Yes, they were able to dismantle two underperforming sides, but does that just show they're effective flat-track bullies? My hunch is that they're improving game by game and will hopefully beat Catalans next weekend with another good performance.

They said individuals and the team, not over the last game or two but over the last few months. I don't know if I agree or not as I believe they are better then everyone else even if they are not on their best.

You have 1-2 world class players that can destroy teams...:( Dirty T******s for one.

Leeds have gone backwards and we have weak links. Smith after he came back from Union is a liability. We are a creative player short and a big forward gaining yards. Peacock is shot, he's 33 and Leeds have played the max games possible for the last two years (challenge cup final, grand final, world championship) a new ACL and ageing body means he is not the force he was. There is still a question mark over the coach and his tactics, we not getting the in quality of players that are leaving. The youth need to be supplemented with 1-2 world class players. Webb is already thinking of his next month to france and the only player who looks class is Hall but he can only come in from the wing so many times! he still took his chances vs Wigan well.

Yeah Bradford above us now, nearly threw away the game vs one of the poorest teams in the league :) that was fun, if only cas hadn't wasted their 2nd half chances..

Title: Re: Super League 2012

The thing with Wigan is that we started the season poorly (with some 'fans' calling for Wane's head), and then have slowly started to improve and now seem to be playing very well.  If we'd been playing like this from the start of the season, then there might be an argument for saying the side had peaked too early.  But I'm not sure coming into top form at this stage of the season is too early.  It gives us the chance of a good cup run and an assault on the league-leader's shield.  Then the play-offs obviously favour the team who is on form then, but not sure you can plan to just peak for that (like Leeds did last year - by plan or good fortune?).

As for the Leeds side, Hall is class, and could play for any team in the world.  Burrow is also excellent for you, and McGuire (although I despise the man) can do good things.  Sinfield has obviously been brilliant for you, and his kicking is still very crucial.  But the strength in depth you have enjoyed seems to be missing.  Even JJB who was excellent for you last season has been off the boil.  Maybe it is the coaching, although I think you'll improve a lot before the end of the season.  But by then you could well be out of the cup and looking for a finish outside the top 4.

Agree about Peacock.  He seems to have aged suddenly, and is only patch of his former self.  I've noticed he's started turning his back going in to collisions rather than driving through and making crucial yards as he used to do so well.  Smith is a joke, and not 100% sure about your centres being as great as some would hype them up to be.

You not got any good youth players coming through?  That's where Wigan seem to be benefiting at the moment.

Looks like Leuluai might never play for Wigan again from the news that's been coming out about his injury.

Stupid game for it to happen in, and hope no Wigan players are available for the next exiles match.

Mellor to come back to Wigan from his loan? Or will we sign someone now before the end of the season to replace Tommy? Shame his career at Wigan looks like it'll be ending prematurely, and could undermine our challenge for all three trophies this season.

I heard an exchange between Wigan and Leeds was offered, with a 'centre' going to Leeds and Burrow going the other way.

I'd definitely have Burrow at Wigan, but can't see it happening. Fortunately, it looks like Leuluai will be back before the end of the season, possibly in time for the CC final and the play offs in the league. That would be a huge boost for Wigan. George Williams, will soon be in the squad from the U18s. He's going to be a real star, definitely one to watch.

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: Acidmouse on June 24, 2012, 07:19:16 PM
The real problem is a fair chunk of leeds players don't rate or get on with the coach. A few of them have been offered coaching roles at the club when they retire but don't see it happening while he remains in charge. Burrows would hate to leave but would if nothing changes.

If the Rhinos don't move up the table and finish 3rd or 4th a huge clearout will happen. We have enough youngsters for next year so it wont be a problem. Many of the players believe it was the players that got them the grand final win last year and nothing to do with the coach.

Too many games, too many teams, and the play-off format makes a lot of the regular season irrelevant.

Reduce the number of sides, make the play-offs favour the top two a lot more (guarantee one of them reaches the final for example), and definitely get rid of any stupid exiles matches in the middle of the season.

Probably made no difference to the result (and Leeds deserved to win anyway), but the ref must have been the only person in the ground who didn't think that was a knock on.  Terrible refereeing.

Wigan go to Craven Park needing to win to secure the league-leaders trophy with a game to spare.

A few minutes before half-time, and it's 26-0 to Hull KR. Wigan would need the biggest ever comeback in Super League history if they were to win it.  Two tries before half-time, and at 26-12 it's game on again.

Hull KR score first in the second-half, and it looks like it was a bridge too far for Wigan - especially with the errors being made by Wigan.

But messrs Hock, Tomkins and Richards had other plans. A few tries and then a wonder-effort by Tomkins means Wigan are within 4 points.  Then with 2 minutes to go Richards ran 60-yards to score a try and level the score. 10m from the touchline he manages to convert it to take Wigan into an unlikely lead.  All Wigan need to do now is hold on to the ball and stop Hull KR from scoring. Hull KR kicked out on the full from the restart, gave away a penalty and then Charnley went in to score another try on the hooter.

What a match!

Kinda happy with how the season is going, not seen anything in a team that makes me think Leeds can't beat them on their day.

It's pretty wide open now. Wigan not in the form they were in earlier in the season, stains not at their best. Warrington are the form side, but definitely beatable. Not sure Leeds have it in them this year, but can't be written off.

As for Wigan, it's great to have Paddy and Tommy back just in time for the play offs. They make a massive difference.

Wigan peaked too early, I said this about 3-4 months ago on here I think. But I agree Leeds would need to play their best to beat them again. Zero chance if Wigan play their A game.

Much prefer Wigan to win it all rather than warr thats for sure.

Rather anyone win it other than Warrington (maybe even saints - but maybe not!).

There are various issues with Wigan's form.  Not sure if it was a case of peaking too early, but a combination of injuries (Tommy's in particular) and the fact that Wane is known to push them hard in training to the degree that the team aren't 100% when they come to match day.  I'm hoping that the drop in form over the past month or so is actually Wane dropping the intensity in training, and this will be wound up as the play-offs progress.

Leeds have a strong first XIII (and subs bench), but can't afford to get any injuries or players under-performing.  I thought McDermott would have strengthened the squad this season, but there's a definite lack of strength in depth despite having some quality players in the line-up.

This is the playoffs not some league game that means nothing and wakey learnt the harsh reality of that. As did Hudds it seams :) Wigan looked very tasty and I really cannot see Leeds beating the top 3 this season.

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: kinboshi on September 17, 2012, 09:45:28 AM
The play-off system in place at the moment is a joke.  This is shown by the poor attendances seen at the grounds and that so far very few of the games have actually been competitive.

Leeds were in a battle for the first 60 minutes, but Wakefield ran out of steam and the 3/4s of Leeds were too good for them in the end.  Saints battered Warrington, who looked like a completely different side without Ben Westwood and then without Carvell in the forwards laying the platform.  If Westwood's not back in the side, then I can see Warrington crashing out in the next game against Hull, or if not losing to Saints in the semi.

Leeds at Catalan won't be easy, because it's at their place. But I still think Leeds should have enough for them. I'd fancy Wigan to beat either though in the semi final.

But it does show what a daft system it is.  Wigan losing to Saints in the last game of the season was actually the best result for Wigan. It shouldn't be that way that losing a match puts you in a better position, it ends up like Olympic Badminton...

yeah defo, he will say we went for lowest team that finished in the league as to not piss anyone off.

I agree the playoffs are a joke, it should not be top 8, it rewards really average teams all for the sake of having one extra game a year...means nothing and makes a lot of the last 10 league games pointless. I mean Leeds literally limped into the playoffs as there was little to play for.

I would like to see it the top 4, or at max top 6.

The frenchies at home are strong and tbh I would say its a true coin flip as to who wins.

I think the same can be said for the one's at the end where he lead with his elbow and then took out burrows. Calalan were getting away with murder all over the men on the tackle. Not sure the pen count but i bet it was 20's for them.

The two weren't comparable. Fakir's was high, but wasn't a swinging arm aimed at someone already held in the tackle.

What a waste of time Clubcall is.  Wigan were always going to pick the team that finished lowest, so it had to be Leeds. If Hull had won yesterday, then it would have been them.  Has anyone ever picked anyone otOh, her than the team that finished lowest?

Oh, and I'd put good money on Leeds not being in the final this year ;).  Would be funny if it's against saints though, and they can lose their 7th grand final on the trot.

Wigan comprehensively outplayed during the first half.  Look a bit clueless and it's been easy for Leeds.  No attacking threat from Wigan so far, and no pressure on Sinfield allowing him to play his kicking game. The way to beat Leeds, especially when McGuire is missing, is to pressure Sinfield - like Warrington did in the CC final. But Wigan aren't even close to doing that so far.

Wigan seem to be missing Tomkins more than Leeds are missing McGuire.

Ok daughter finally asleep so i can watch it on sky plus, missed most of the game.

I firstly hope you got on, I dont bet anymore but I wish I had now here. Owt above 3/1 on a team that are peaking at the right time again was amazing value. I know I said it before on here and its not meant as a rub down (as i think with Sam playing you would have won easily) but to my expert mates they kept saying Wigan peaked too early in the season and they wont win the Grand final.

Over the past 3rd of the season Leeds have played very well, they lost a at game at Hudds which meant nothing apart from moving the price out with the bookies on the next game. Beating an average wakey on a good run was expected, being only the 2nd team to win in France was nothing short of outstanding. The game tonight was telling, Leeds were the better team, I don't think (going on my tweet lines i read) Wigan have any complaints about tonight, take away the ref, in every department they were 2nd best.

It's a funny game, I wonder if next year if the team has a chance to pick Leeds they will? now both Warrington and Wigan have been stung. I really believe Saints will hammer Warrington tomorrow who look shot against a better team.

This. It's a joke. If Hull had beaten Warrington, then they'd have been selected as they finished lower than Leeds. Never has a team gone for a side who didn't finish the lowest out of the choices.

As a Wigan fan it might sound a bit churlish to say that the play-off system is also a joke. The team who is the most consistent throughout the season isn't seen as the best in the league. In fact finishing 5th hardly puts you at a disadvantage to the side who finished top.

So it all comes down to how well you play in a handful of matches at the end of the season. Leeds and saints play the system well, and hats off to them. Whereas Warrington are terrible at it, and Wigan not much better.

The older playoff system was better, with fewer sides and a more direct route to the final. Wigan lost one play-off match, and they're out. Last year Warrington finished top, and went out in the same way. Wigan struggled tonight without Sam Tomkins. In hindsight, he could have been rested against Catalan and then been fit to play today. But surely the idea is that you play your best team every week? In fact some players could be rested for the first half of the season as winning those matches isn't really important.

The attendances for the play-offs reflects the fans' lack of enthusiasm for the system too it seems.

Title: Re: Super League 2012
Post by: Acidmouse on September 28, 2012, 10:43:46 PM
Agreed, the playoffs are a farce, but the people who run the game are jesters.

There should never be a situation where a team can coast into the playoffs not worried about finishing from 4-8.

With 8 teams its way too many for the playoffs, it rewards average teams. I would like to see it restricted to just the 4 teams with the main accolade for the season being the league winners and not the grand final winner.

I hope whatever happens next week the Ref has a good game.

They only have a choice of two sides.

This year Wigan could pick Leeds or Warrington. Warrington finished 2nd top after the weekly rounds, Leeds finished 5th. Wigan had beaten Leeds twice in the league (lost to them in the cup), but had lost to Warrington twice.

Although last night's game was exciting/dramatic I thought it was pretty low on actual quality, especially in the first half. Wayne's policy of playing SO'L at hooker seems to be a terrible one.

It's the same problem as cup games. If you've got a season ticket there are too many games as it is. It's like trying to sell puddings in an all-you-can eat restaurant. People already have more food than they want available, they aren't going to pay for more.

They tried in France to beat us they failed. The mighty Wigan + silverwood tried and failed. Warrington tried and failed. Each game the best team won, peaked at the right time again. Unreal performances, so proud if the team. It will be buzzing around leeds now for weeks.

With the salary cap it's nothing short or amazing dominating the grand final like we have for years.

So many things I wish Football players could learn from League players. I mean after the final whistle the respect shown to each other was immense, none of the pansy feigning injury's during the game.

Kevin Sinfield's form during the playoffs was super human, did he miss a kick in the final 3 games? lol..
