Title: Nandos virgin. What should I try?
Post by: The Camel on February 18, 2012, 04:29:52 PM
So, I have finally succumbed. Everyone raves about it.

Going to Nandos for the first time tonight.

What should I order?

definitely this.

You can get a better cooked chicken at the supermarket and you don't have to be sat in a restaurant full of chavs.

Quarter chicken Camel. Spice it how you like.

Or if you don't want chicken the steak roll is pretty good

Wow. One of the dealers at work yesterday was saying the same thing, and I thought this might be his post. How can you have not been to Nando's before?! It's almost as shocking as everybody trying to bluff you off it. Nevermind, real help is here. Nando's is very decent fast food, literally not even comparable to KFC as Nando's actually use chicken, not vermin. If you're expecting gourmet pheasant, then yeah, taxi might be a good idea. Otherwise dig in, enjoy a flip with your friends for an inexpensive bill.

My personal favourite is the chicken breast wrap, medium spice, with cheese, without pineapple; spicy rice and piri fries on the side; a helping of olives to start; and a mango juice. That's a tenner well spent imo. Hope you enjoy!

Keith

Please go with the mentality of fast food rather than restaurant to avoid disappointment! I mean it's ok but not remotely worth raving about.

Double chicken pitta with sweetcorn and chips for me!

Can't wait for the trip report

Butterfly chicken with spicy rice & garlic bread.

The difference between hot & extra hot is minimal, if you don't like it spicy just get the lemon & herb sauce then get a jar of medium stuff.

Worst thing you can do is ruin nando's by getting the wrong level of heat on your first trip.

GL you won't regret it.

I used to get half chicken which was ok but unless you love picking at bones then the butterfly double chicken breast is awesome!

If you want a starter then don't look any further than the red pepper dip.  It comes with 2 pitta so is a good one to share with a loved one or close friend.  DO NOT SHARE WITH SOMEBODY WHO WILL DOUBLE DIP AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF YOUR GOOD NATURE IN SHARING SITUATIONS.

This

lol at anybody suggesting Nando's is better quality than KFC. They have more of a range but they're pretty much the same level - it all depends what particular set of flavours you prefer; the Nando's sauce or the KFC coating.

Got there at 6.30ish, still had to wait 30 minutes for a table which was annoying. Assumed as I got there so early there wouldn't be a queue.

The place smelt disgusting. Nearly gave up and left on the spot, but I'm made of sterner stuff.

Finally got seated. The table was sticky. The seats were sticky. The floor was sticky. Not good.

Ordered  medium chicken breast in pitta with cheese and pineapple, spicy rice, piri chips and 3  extra hot wings plus a beer I've never heard of.

Chicken breast in pitta: 3/5 Ok, wish I'd had hotter. Bit too messy for my liking, but tasted pretty good.

Spicy rice: 1/5 Complete disappointment. Tasted of nothing in particular. Left most of it.

Chips: 5/5. Excellent stuff, just as I like chips. Could not be faulted.

Wings: 4/5. Not enough meat on them, but very tasty. Wish I'd more. No clean up tissues a big disappointment.

Beer: 5/5. Fantastic stuff. One of most refreshing beers I've ever had. Perfect compliment for the wings.

All round score: 3/5. If it was food alone it would have been 4/5 but the disgusting smell and all round stickiness must mark it down.

Way better than a KFC and all other fast food joiints, but nowhere near as good as a decent restaurant.

Will definitely go back to try other dishes, but will never wait for a table again.

that does sound a lot like you're trying to hide the flavour of the rice - i.e. the sauce is good the rice is bad

I am a fan of nandos before Dtd with a few mates but it's not somewhere I would take the wife for a meal. I rate the food 3/5 but really enjoy the atmosphere chilling before a game.

Really can't believe that in 5 pages no one has mentioned the sweet potato mash (a fini? Side) which is the nuts.

You eat the curry and the rice seperately. One spoonful (or fork, whatever) of curry, followed by one spoonful of rice. Alternate until finished.

...
Spicy rice: 1/5 Complete disappointment. Tasted of nothing in particular. Left most of it.
...

If that had said Plain rice and not spicy rice then obviously it would taste of nothing in particular.

But if the only way to make it taste like spicy rice is to add shit loads of hot sauce - then surely Nando's are doing something wrong?

Or at least they should stop pretending and just sell plain rice instead.

As long as you know what to expect I really can't see the problem.

I'll accept the pity though and utilise it as necessary.

Nothing wrong in the sense that no-one has died from it but I just don't understand how people can enjoy it. You can buy a ready cooked chicken from a supermarket for a few quid and it tastes better than a nandos one. You can enjoy it without sitting amongst the dregs of society that Nandos seems to be a magnet for.

Don't even get me started on having to queue up to place my order in a restaurant.

What about Sunday evenings? Shops are closed, similar priced establishments have served Sunday Lunch and stopped doing food. Still justified in slagging off all our mothers?

Y do u pity them cos?

Was u the one I was talking to about subway ? Where u said it's the worst thing in the world?

I pity them because clearly they either grew up in a household where whoever was cooking didn't do a very good job or they just haven't eaten well in such a long time that they've forgotten what good food is.

We've mentioned Subway before yeah. I didn't say it was the worst thing in the world. They market it as a healthy food choice when I doubt that's particularly true.

Where do you live that 'similar priced establishments' just stop doing food at a reasonable time on sundays?

I pity you for having such terrible parents bringing you up thinking it's acceptable to slag off other people's parents.

I obv don't but think it's weird that even with your love of saying stuff purely to be controversial that you can make such a bellish comment over  the fact that some people like the convenience of some chicken joint.
Overpriced, overrated, not very good etc all pretty fair opinions to have.

Over priced and over rated never has a brand lived on a misconception that its great.the most tilting thing is the way u order....go up and queue then a waitress brings u the food..why can't the fucking waitress take my order?  half the time there standing around scratching themselves.

Petes kebab shop ftw

This!!

It's alright for a bit of quick grub, I don't quite understand how people go nuts for what is essentially just a slightly healthier version of fast food

how can it be overpriced when you get free drink refills? you create your own value. refill 10 times and you're effectively eating for free

refill 10 times and you probably won't have any space for food.

Think you just found the optimal Nandos strategy.

Hardly a ringing endorsement for a place that sells chicken as its main dish.

Nandos isn't a lifestyle choice or a reflection on a persons upbringing. It's a fast food restaurant that meets a basic need. Fast food that tastes good at a reasonable price.  It's better than McDonald's and worse than claridges...

They opened a new store in Leicester on the Vue Cinema park.

Called it a "store"   If they served food it would be a restaurant.

They offered local business free lunches as part of staff training we got tickets all
week whatever you want was gratis. Folk only went once. Our polish valets even turned
down a free lunch. Nandos is Shite. Absolutely shocking. Awful.

They murder what started off as a nice bit of chicken.

The bottled water was nice.

Ok, considering I've not been before, so far the impression I've got is.....

It's just chicken.
The rice needs mixing in with sauce cos it's crap.
It's full of chavs.
You have to queue to order.
It's low quality chicken.

Pretty uninspiring really, but in the interest of balance, the piri chips sound good!

Not sure why there is 9 pages- Nandos is overpriced Chicken that tastes perfectly fine, does a job and doesnt try to be anything other than what it is, its somewhere between a fast food place and a casual restaurant. Will never be michelin star but obviously its better than KFC/McDonalds- u only need to look at calorie counts for KFC!

Serving yourself is obviously tilting.

Luckily straight in front of the till was Homers Meltdown fruit machine at the bar- so i was on till duty whilst watchin that, it used to go bright RED if it was paying a guaranteed jackpot (normally with repeat) as soon as you get on board. Obviously it would go RED, people collect £3 etc. I would then turn it off, put the out of order sign on it and wait till bar shut and take home guaranteed extra £25-£50 a night :)

I suffered this a couple of weeks ago (4 mini tubs of awful kfc gravy instead of beans and slaw) so I rang and complained and got free beans and slaw the next visit, plus 20% off the bill for the next time.
Funnily enough the visit when I claimed my 20% off was a much bigger order than usual and we fed four grandchildren plus 5 adults at discounted prices

When i was 16 and at school I was a waiter in restaurant where you had to go upto the till and order, even tho we had waiters etc. All it meant was crappy tips

Ha when I was at school I worked as a waiter in the local Chinese restaurant and didn't even get a sniff of the tips. They didn't have a fruity either :(
Well when I was at school I was a choir boy and used to stick my name down on the list for all funerals which we got paid £10 for but weddings just a £5er,  oh and the few coins you could slip off the collection plate  ;whistle;
Gonna get flamed I know

Worst. Human. Ever. (http://www.anchoredbygrace.com/smileys/fie1.gif)
Yeah defo going to hell. If you are taking a few coins you may as well had the lot :)

Dude, how long has it been since you quit?

I love Blonde.
Someone innocently asks what to try at Nando's, and before you know it we have ten pages
including social stereotyping, a "yo momma" exchange, accusations of racism and the revelation that
Eso Kral was a pilfering choirboy ;gobsmacked;

Keep up the good work, people ;D

Luckily straight in front of the till was Homers Meltdown fruit machine at the bar- so i was on till duty whilst watchin that, it used to go bright RED if it was paying a guaranteed jackpot (normally with repeat) as soon as you get on board. Obviously it would go RED, people collect £3 etc. I would then turn it off, put the out of order sign on it and wait till bar shut and take home guaranteed extra £25-£50 a night :)

OMG

Homer's Meltdown I miss you so much along with Pie Factory probably the greatest machines ever.

Miss King Kebab and Battle Axe for pure comedy reasons.

I have tried to perfect my own version of KFC but after a few attempts decided its no longer worth the hassle :-

Make your own :-
2 bowls – one with  beaten eggs and the other for the special fried chicken seasoned flour mix.
One very large pan with 2 litres of veg oil
One grill pan for finishing off the chicken in the oven so most of the oil will drip  away.
Another tray to cook chips on and another bowl to heat the beans
Oh and the next morning use a funnel and sieve to pour the oil back into the bottle.

KFC = Buy KFC and eat contents from the box.
Throw away box.

Might try to perfect Nando’s at home though. Watch this space.

I assume you had the rice dry and uncooked then added the water to each individual grain yourself?

Wouldn't be nice rice if you had to have it pre mixed.

Although i do love nandos ive found there to be a lot of varience in the quality of the chicken. I remember one time i went on a pretty big nandos downswing where every time i went, the chicken tasted pretty avg, even one time finding a hair in my chicken burger. Although i did ship a free nandos from this so i remained loyal to the portugese paradise.

Two flame-grilled PERi-PERi chicken thighs, melted cheese, spinach, mayo, and red pepper chutney, in a ciabatta type bun.

I get it without cheese/mayo, and it's really good.

Half chicken extra hot with chips and rice and extra hot sauce to drown the whole lot in.

Factually the correct answer. It has been proven in tests.

I usually only go for hot/chilli sauce with kebabs, which I'm purchasing from unknown vendors.

Big anniversary time for me so I treated my wife to Nandos as she'd never been before.

Had the red pepper dip- whatevs.

Hot buttterfly with mash & peas. 1 x Sagres

My wife went with

Medium 1/4 chicko, chips and slaw, 1 x Pinot

Towards the end of a fine evening a waiter asked if all was OK and if 'he could get me anything'. I asked for a beer, he said I had to go up and queue. Made me wonder what he could have actually got me.

Anyway, I probs won't rush back on account of the service angle, but the food isn't terrible but it aint very interesting either

5/10

The thing that always strikes me about Nandos is the huge disparity between branches with portion sizes, service, cleanliness.

You can go to The Light in Leeds, order chips with peri peri salt and get 7 chips and no salt then you can go to a newish one in Milton Keynes and get about 100 chips absolutely loaded with the gorgeous peri peri salt.

In my experience the city centre ones are generally terrible and the newer ones in shopping centres/entertainment complexes much better.

For reference, my order is  the extra hot Butterfly chicken breast with spicy rice and peri-peri chips along with extra extra hot sauce and a perenaise dip (which I highly reccommend).

Would never hesitate to go to nandos when I fancy one as I know what I'm getting (unless I go to the Light in Leeds or the one in the middle of York) but nowadays there are so many different restaurants to try at reasonable prices that I don't go anywhere near as much as I used to.

I massively defended it against Nick Goff on twitter the other week though  ;nemesis;

The sauces are pretty spicy. I'd say ask them to prepare the chicken in a medium sauce and get a bottle of the spicier (hot/ extra hot) sauces so you can add as you like. If you start more spicy than you can handle...there's no going back.
