Title: The Official Help me choose thread.
Post by: millidonk on October 19, 2012, 11:20:58 AM
If you're stuck or just can't decide here is a thread to help you choose between one thing and another.

Xmas is just around the corner and I can't decide which of these to get for the missus. She has a tonne of records but nothing to play em on, both play cassettes, CDs and obv records with pretty deece reviews, so its a matter of which is more appealing to the general eye?

So one or two?

tyty. I am tez at making decisions. Can see me using it for helping me decide what film to watch, what to have for tea, should i go to work etc.

Obv 2 is the more expensive one. You lot are stitching me up.

2 takes the lead 3 - 0.

Not asked for anything. Normally get PS3 games, blu rays, clothes, aftershave, stuff like that. Easily pleased me.

#1 isn't making a comeback from here so gonna order #2 now. Normally I wait til like Dec 21st to find out everything has been sold out and she ends up getting her presents mid January. If she doesn't like it I will have to blame you guys. Advice muchos appreciato.

Are there any other decisions out ther to be made? hmmmm.

oh and i often get a few flat caps most years.

I'm after a point and shoot camera for the wife. She's had an early mode Panasonic TZ which she has been very happy with.
Do you think I should just replace it with a later model?

This little compact is fantastic can't recommend it enough. I doubt my DLSR can take better photos in a lot of scenarios.

IPad mini 32GB with wifi and 4g
                           Or
Google Nexus 32GB wifi only

I want the iPad mini as I've had a couple of I pads and feel they are very good, quality, easy to use etc.
I've also got an Android tablet which works well but its no iPad.
There's a huge price difference between the 2 devices with the nexus less than half the price.
I've a 3g iPad at the moment which I've used in 3g mode maybe only 6 times in last 12 months. When I have used 3g I've been grateful of it.
The nexus is more powerful and the screen resolution is superior but the iPad  is no slouch and the screen is the same as my iPad 2 which I find good enough.
There are more apps for the iPad, a lot which I have already purchased.

Money isn't a worry for me at the moment but don't know if I can justify buying the iPad.

Please help?

Edit: I'm going to the the states soon, can I buy cheaper over there?

Stick it out until a better paid job comes along. Unless you are seriously suffering where you currently work.

I know all you 'kids' on here love your toys and gadgets so now I would appreciate your input in helping out an old man please.

I pod touch 4Th generation or 5Th generation ? What are the main differences? and is there any benefit to having one of these if you already have an I Phone?

I Pad 2 or the new I Pad, again what are the main differences?

Roxanne has an I Phone 4, and she is always googling IPods and IPads but never asks for anything especially as she knows our present financial situation, but me being shrewd/tight have managed to amass a 'secret stash' to be able to treat her this Christmas, which will probably the last one for a while...

All advice will be greatly appreciated many thanks in advance.......

I phone 5, galaxy s3 or note 2?
Never had an iphone because most people that have them start to go up their own are but I can finally se the appeal.
Samsungs are 100 cheaper and probs regarded as better phones but not sure i'd ever spend the time to take benefit of all it can do whereas the iphone can be used by monkeys so I couldn't go wrong.

Yeah it's not all about the phone it's just as important about the support apps etc... Take macs and pcs I'd much rather have a mac far superior but the lack of software compare to pc means I/we all use pcs.. So with the iPhone it's a fantastic piece of kit in its own right but the sheer weight of apps etc make it a clear winner imo

Agreed with the iPhone.  Went to HTC Sensation XE (don't hate me) and Android when my last contract ran out and whilst it's ok, the software isn't fantastic.  It can take a while to do something when I've pressed a button and quite often flicking around text messages can cause it to hang up and it often becomes annoying.  I don't hate the phone, but I'm looking forward to the contract running out.   None of the issues are major, but I never got them on the iPhone and it ran a lot smoother.   That may be down to my phone model.

It depends entirely on you. It is like choosing between a Zonda and a ferrari 430.

I have a Nexus and wouldn't change Android for anything else. Jelly Bean is a joyous operating system.

Apple products are user-friendly and that is their draw. If you want something that eagerly tells you it's brilliant and everyone will know what you have got, get the iPhone/Zonda.

If you want a precision piece of tech that you take pleasure in telling people about, even if they don't care, get a Nexus/F430. Nexus also has the advantage of being solely a Google phone, so it has no Samsung stuff on it at all, save for the physical hardware.

Years of abusing mates for having the "girl" version prevented me from accepting.
So still in limbo

Bought this one in the end. Cracking coffee and the milk frother is great only complaint is that if your cup/mug is cold the heat of the coffee soon disappears. Need to warm the cup/mug up first.

My daughter Alisha turns eleven next week, and I'm thinking of buying her a tablet.
Youngest already has the Nabi kids tablet, which we're pretty impressed with, but I was thinking of getting a grown up version, maybe a Kindle fire? or a Samsung galaxy?
The Nabi does just about everthing she would need, and they are very robust, but you do have override the child settings to do normal internet browsing, and the webcam is tez so Skype isn't great.

Obviously I still need to have parental control but I thought it would be easier to download apps like netflix and such on a 'real' tablet but I don't know if I'd be gaining much.
Don't want to splash out on a Ipad, not a big Apple fan, but I'd appreciate any advice on android.

It's just so hard to make a mistake when buying a Google Nexus 7. Cheaper than the Samsungs, OS is still android so just as slick and build quality is Asus with some pretty good oversight from Google, so it's well built.

Better than the galaxy tabs for graphically intense games, as well.

i got the 32 gb version for £199, but the 16gb version might also suit for £159.

I bought my 10 yr old daughter the Kindle Fire. Although she's really happy with it, the limitation I don't like is that you're restricted to Amazon apps and can't access the Google Play Store as you can with a native Android device. I confess I only found this out when I installed 'Stars Mobile and it only allows you to play free money games. This prompted a bit more research and there are quite a few apps I found aren't available. I read some very good reviews of the Nexus too fwiw.

Thanks Lads, that was the kind of feedback I needed. I was leaning more towards Kindle fire but  I've changed my mind after this.
Will have a better look at the Nexus I think!

Hmm, had a look at the Nexus and it has good reviews, but so does the Samsung Galaxy!
A 16gb Nexus is £159, but Tesco have the 8gb Galaxy 7 at £149 but it has a micro SD slot so you can take it up to 40gb. Also it seems to have a better camera, front and rear facing 3mp so I'm leaning towards this at the minute, anyone point out any problems with this model?

You are not restricted to Amazon apps on a Fire, just google how to sideload apps to a  Kindle Fire and you will find plenty of pages telling you how.

I've been offered a gift up to the value of £500 and can't accept the cash. Only stipulation - it has to be a tech gift.
Any ideas?
leethefish would like this ....but i aint got a £500 gift !!

http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00BE4HOIM/ref=s9_ri_gw_g63_ir01?pf_rd_m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE&pf_rd_s=center-3&pf_rd_r=1JTXQGZNZ49XWCY17KQX&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_p=394918607&pf_rd_i=468294

Bumpty bump bump/

I knew Mr M had mentioned  a garage door dec and just found this old thread. I have been saying for years that I want to put some decorations on the outside of my house this could be the time. Am moving in a couple of weeks and might surprise the kids with some tasteful  lights and a tasteful garage door cover..  Depends on what you consider tasteful obviously but what ever :)

I seem to recall that you love Christmas Dave, what did you end up getting,  any links to any little xmas treats that you can recommend.  I am not sure if you still post but pre Merry Christmas any way.
