Title: Playstation?
Post by: bobAlike on February 09, 2013, 04:01:15 PM
My lad wants to spend some of his savings on a Playstation console and not being a gamer I havent a clue what/which version he needs to get.

TIA

PlayStation 3 is the latest one.  PS4 is rumoured to be this year but it could be a few months/towards the end of the year yet.  PS3 prices should fall when it comes out.

FWIW, it's a great device.  Doubles up as a Blu ray player, can play 3D movies, stream from a pc, download movies from the net (PPV), use the BBC iPlayer, ITV player, 4OD and a couple of others.  I used mine all the time and I can't remember the last time I played a game on it!   If you can get him to keep it in the main tv room, get the remote controller for it and you'll be well away.

Just looking at the hard drives, bit like iPads, how much space do you want?  Sainsburys do a 12gb one but I think that's pretty skinny when you consider that you can get a 500gb one.  I think mines 40gb but I've never filled it. I'm pretty good at space management on it though, I don't keep anything on there.  I imagine a few games being stored and it will fill up quickly enough

PS4 sounds very impressive from what I read and also very reasonably priced if it is that good.

Has the pricing been announced? I heard it was close to £400 but that was only a rumour.  Seems expensive for a console to me.

I thought it said £300, the review I read said it would be more powerful than a top spec desktop PC, seems unlikely but if true then it's a bargain even at £400.

PS Pretty sure I read it in The S*N so confirmed garbage.

Sweet.  Don't think I'll rush and buy one but if my PS3 ever conks out I could be tempted.  I think there's a Sony PS4 event on the 20thish, should reveal more.

Why do you need the storage? There seems to be a big disparity between 20 and 500 GB.

Downloads, saved games etc. You can have photo galleries and your own family movies etc on it, it's an impressive bit of kit really.

Ok say he doesn't need photo galleries and home made vids and lets say he'll just play the standard COD, Footy Games and Gran Turismo. We've got a decent home set up WRT tv, media centre, NAS box and Xbox so would a small ball GB be good enough?

It's hard to say, better to have and not need than need and not have.  Go for a 40gb one or something. 500gb is probably overkill. 12 may well be enough, but you never know.

The PS4 will be out in the UK early in 2014 but could bring it forward for the Christmas market. It's out in the US and Asia about October time

I would recommend the PS3 to anybody, don't know why people go for the XBOX

Spent 3 and a half minutes trying to find the remote to turn the tv on to check it had worked.

Had it home and logged on within 20 mins of UK release, had the world to choose from for my psn, I was gonna go for Dave, but in the end I went for milligan

Haven't played much since my lil girl was born but was actually planning to get back into it a bit more. FIFA & COD are pretty much the only two games I have played in the last 5 yrs. What do you play? add me add me

Was a slave to Cod4 and Mw2 when released, didn't like the sequels so chopped them in.
Just go on Mw2 when I fancy a blast these days.

I'll send a request next time I'm on.

What's all this stuff people are quoting about the PS4? Nothing announced by Sony as of yet. Everything circling the net is just rumours. Even after the PS4 comes out the PS3 will be supported for quite a while yet. The price won't drop by a great deal either so if you want one no reason to wait.

I own a PS3 and think it's great :)

Went into town today to buy Ni No Kuni but nowhere had it. So bought it on PSN but it's a 20gb download. I don't have the fastest net connection so it'll be tomorrow before I get to play it :(

Don't want to tempt fate... But you must run really good still having the original PS3, have a look through the vents and blast/vac any dust you find in there.
