Title: World Headsup Poker Championship 2005 on TV in the UK from June 27
Post by: JonShoreman on June 22, 2005, 11:11:41 AM
The PartyPoker.com World Heads Up Poker Championship 2005 will premier on the Sky Travel Channel at 11:00 pm on June 27. That is good news for those with a Freeview box, as Sky Travel is one of 30 channels currently available via Freeview. There are currently about five million Freeview boxes in use in the UK.

The fifth annual heads up championship was held at Casino Barcelona in Spain this past May. The edited TV highlight programmes feature an exciting sports approach to poker, complete with player and match statistics and newly developed graphics. The production company specialises in sports programming such as downhill skiing and beach volleyball.

The ten-episode series will initially run for two weeks, Monday through Friday, on consecutive nights at 11:00 pm. Episodes 1-5 will air at 11pm, June 27-July 1. Episodes 6-10 will air at 11pm, July 4-8. On Saturday, July 2, all five episodes from the first week will be repeated, starting at 11:00pm and continuing until 4:00am. On Saturday, July 9, episodes 6-10 will repeat between 11pm and 4am.

To date, eight broadcasters in Europe and North America have signed to air the series.

BSkyB: United Kingdom
Viasat Sport: Scandinavia
7TV: Russia
Sky Sport: Italy
SOS: Serbia
Telesport: Romania
TSN: Canada
America One: USA

In addition, Viasat Sport Scandinavia will carry the complete, unedited versions of the televised matches, which means a total of about 30-35 hours of heads up action. Sky Sport Italy and Telesport Romania will also air the unedited shows. Dates and times are not yet available, so please check your local listings.

apart from the poor choice of channel (there are enough channels showing poker no need to conget the market more)
this is great news.

Why is it a poor choice of channel?
As I mentioned, this channel is available on freeview and therefore has more potential viewers than other Sky channels such as Challenge or the Poker Channel.
Sky have purchased the UK rights, and it is them that have decided to show it on the travel channel. Hopefully it will be well received and they will repeat it on Sky Sports.

I hope so. We will offer it to Sky again, and hopefully, if the edited shows are a success they will take them.

John would it be possible to get the uneditted versions on dvd or vhs for chubbs and burnley john. They are already in vegas but I know they would love to have copies of this to keep for posterity. I am sure they would be willing to buy them if they have to but it may be nice to send the runner up and losing semifinalist a copy dont you think?

Jon

the reason its a poor choice of channel is that there is now so many channels showing poker its impossible to keep track

Five, challenge, bravo, men and motors,H&L,SKY,226,265,425,eurosport, channel 4 and ITV have new shows coming out this year too

getting on sky travel might bring in new viewers but at the cost of clashing with other programs and unless you have sky+ ( i am lucky that way) you cant even tape 1 and watch the other

if i was trying to sell a tv show on poker i would have tried to sell it too an existing channel first obviously you would have tried this and sky would have given you a better price so fair dues but poker is going to overcook itself soon and we will end up in a worse postion that we were before LNP

I refer you to the "you cant please all of the people all of the time"  saying.

IMHO any poker on a channel that is available to the people that dont have sky or cable is a fantastic thing, and as for over exposure...it aint ever gonna happen, the more people that see it and realise that it isnt all seedy smokey casinos and degenerate gamblers playing it, all the better.
Everywhere you go in vegas, you see people wearing wsop merchandise, every casino has poker rooms that are bursting at the seems, it is truly amazing...and that is in a country where they are brought up on the game ...bearing in mind that we are years behind them in poker terms i cant see any chance of the bubble bursting for many years to come.
