£500,000 Sky Poker UK Poker Championships Announced

Sky Poker has announced it will host the inaugural UK Poker Championship at one of Europe's leading poker venues Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham in February 2014. The highlight of the seven-day festival will be the Championship Event and its guaranteed £500,000 prize pool.

The Sky Poker UK Poker Championship will take place 20th-23rd February 2014 at Dusk Till Dawn. The £1000+£100 event will include two Day 1 flights on Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th February, with the champion crowned on Sunday 23rd February. The event will be broadcast on Sky Sports.

The UK Poker Championship Event will be the finale to a seven day long Sky Poker UK Poker Festival which kicks off on Monday 17th February which will include a High Roller event as well as a two-day Pot Limit Omaha tournament. The winner of a UK Poker Festival leaderboard will also secure themselves a $15,000 Las Vegas Holiday Package.

Details of Satellites into the £500,000 UK Poker Championship will be announced in the coming weeks on www.skypoker.com with freeroll satellites confirmed as part of the schedule.

The multi Day Ones dovetail nicely with the Fessie as a whole. 

When you say "surprised, Sky Poker pool", that's a misunderstanding, or disconnect, really.

Naturally, it is to be hoped that plenty of Next Door regulars play the Event.

However, it is far from aimed just at them, the desired attraction is much much wider. It raises the Site Profile & general awareness, helps credibility, & potentially attracts fresh players to the Site.

In truth, that must apply to all the branded Fessies & Tours, including GUKPT, GPS, UKIPT & EPT, they all have, broadly, similar aspirations, & are not designed purely for players on those sites, far from it. 'Stars are a little different perhaps, due to their sheer size & dominance, but the general rule still applies.

On Sky Poker, probably next Monday. We have the UKOPS Festival this week, which means there are satellites galore, so it was felt it made sense to start them immediately after that, on Monday 4th or Tuesday 5th. There will be three Monthly Finals I believe (November, December & January), sort of VLV Style, with zillions of feeders & the like.

I don't actuallly know when DTD plan to start their Satellite programme, as they also have so many things happening at present, but it'll be Posted on here shortly.

We will also be launching a sat programme over the weekend to start Monday.

Hope we can get as many blondes into the main event and sides as possible with a 4 month campaign

Wondered what the thinking was behind having the 6max and PLO running simultaneously with Day 2/3/4 of the ME? I was looking to come down for the week with satellites in the bag via the cash game promos but there really wouldn't be any point unless I want to flick in 3k for the high roller as there are 0 side events Mon-Wed?

Wonder if the schedule could be tweaked to move the PLO and/or 6max to earlier in the week perhaps?

There aren't separate UKIPT and Sky sats are there?

I'm not sure that fits with a "UK Poker Championship" schedule, but our friends at DTD might well decide to ad a few Events, I'll ask Mr Trumper, & see what he tginks. Bear with us please, Mr T of the Rumper is currently in faraway places & much warmer climesh

Quick update on the UKPC Main Event.

Sky Poker have now qualified 43 players into the Event, & they comtinue to Guaranteee 6 seats per week in the near term. Several seats are available via various Promos, too.

It is harder to quantify how many DTD have qualified, as their system is different, offering "tokens" which gave a variety of uses, but when I discussed this with Nick Whiten, he felt that DTD already had about the same amount already qualified, so we are closing in on 100 entries already. Qualifiers continue on DTD.com as advertised, of course. 

Considering the event is still over 2 months away, these are very pleasing numbers, it must be quite rare for an event of this nature to have nearly 20% of the required field qualified 2 months early.

Congrats also to blonde favourite JAKALLY, who qualified Next Door last night.   

Will there be satalites on DTD. I am not allowed to play next door because of my location.

Yes, I am amongst the thousands who work there. I actually share an office with Oddschecker.

It's actually a very interesting place, the "Sky Osterley Campus".  We even have an Ice-Rink for Christmas, proper ice & everything.

They have a fleet of EIGHT coaches, to ferry staff to & from the nearby Tube & Bus Stations, very nice coaches they are, too.

"I don't know" is the honest answer.

The way the deal is put together, both parties (DTD & Sky Poker) have specific responsibilities as to the United Kingdom Poker Championships.

Both agree eveything with each other, of course, but the specific responsibility for scheduling sits with DTD, and Simon Trumper has made these decisions, & remains responsible for them.

I'll ask Simon, & no doubt he'll respond in due course.

The only date cast in stone right now is for the Main Event, I would think, as plenty of seats have already been sold for that, whereas I don't believe seats have even been offered for the supporting Sideys yet, so if Simon feels some tweaking is needed, it is not too late.

Simon or myself will let you know, soonest.

"We projected the numbers for the Main Event, & so far, we are miles ahead of forecast, think we have 150 qualified on either Next Door, or DTD.  If we project the committed Promos & Satellite schedule forward, that takes us over 300. Genting are going to run Live Super Sats in 8 of their venues, too, so that is on top of the 300. Rob & Simon suggested that "walk-ins" usually account for 40% of the field, so we are in good shape so far. "

EDIT: Comes across as a cynical comment (sorry), which it's really not meant to be as think it's a really good initiative and am hoping to make it up. Though I do think for the leaderboard to be competitive the scoring for the main needs to be dulled slightly?

I think the main scoring factor was closely considered specifically to avoid "win the main event, win the leaderboard"

ie most people if up for the week can play multiple side events (and satellite in for multiple events) and therefore the winner might exceed 100 points

Appreciate they're might not be room in the cardroom at 1pm tho, with a big 1b field expected.

Couple of questions on late reg. i cant find any info on it on the weblinks.

What time is late reg until on day 1s?
Will my stack be in play from start or can it go in when i arrive?
If i make day 2 and get there a little late i presume there is no penalty and stack just goes in at 1pm and plays through as normal.

Structure for the main really is mega slow. Would have thought 6 levels of late reg could be easily done and would allow more recs into the field who can come after work and still be ~100 BBs deep

Boy of boy ipoker is so frustrating. Haven't been able to load it for three weeks then suddenly works fine again on Wednesday night. As of last night it's back to failing again on the same error as previous. Makes me want to tear whatever hair I have left out so so much. The £150r Sats to the HR; does the rebuy period finish the same time as late reg ends? If not does anybody have any idea how long the rebuy period is?

If i pre reg for the main with a token, will my chips be put into play from the start of play or will I be allowed to arrive late without being blinded away?

If you have a seat credit just turn up and see the cash desk, all players will get entered when they arrive so no chips in play.

There are 3 Super feeders with 10 seats gtd at 5, 7 and 9 to the 100. There was also 2 Super feeders with 5 seats gtd with the slower structure but think that was maybe an admin error as they've now been took down.

So my debating of which to play ended up not mattering, nothing to see here :)

Just to be aware the latest email from Glen states that when pre reg your chips are in play from start NOT on arrival. This is contrary to other Advice on here. Guessing this is due to the expected numbers for 1b

Amongst those who won the 7 seats were Jamie Sykes and Mitch Johnson, Matt Perrins bubbled a seat but won £1500 for his troubles

There is another High Roller satellite at 1pm, ahead of Day 1 of the High Roller itself at 6pm


The final satellites are taking place for the Main which starts tomorrow

On Sunday 45 seats were generated on DTD, Sky Poker and live

I've been thinking, which as we all know, isn't always a good idea.

My question is, is there gonna be enough room for everyone on Friday? Could be 300? Playing day2, then say 200 6 max players. Or are these numbers below dtd's expectations?

If I buy in for tomorrow via DTD shop online are my chips in play level 1?

I'm sure its been asked 100 times but I can't find it myself

Just bumping this again, now that we know the day2 numbers. Will there be a cap on the 6 max?

6 max needs 200 runners to meet the guarantee, so i would think that it wouldnt be capped??? depends on how many day2 runners are still in at 6pm i supose??

Just a reminder, the 6 Max has TWO x Day 1's, today & tomorrow.

It is likely that there may be waiting lists or Alternates initially today, but 100 or more exits from the Main can be expected by 6pm or so.

Late Reg in the 6 Max is until approx 9pm (I think) today.

Extra Tables are being installed right now (11.45am Friday), so, fingers crossed, there should be capacity for almost 100 runners from the get-go, which will steadily increase all afternoon. 

Have to say, I was very impressed today with the organisation of the comps at dtd. I did ask a couple of times on here how they were gonna fit everyone in. I needn't have bothered. Well done all.

Not as impressive as tikay's velvet jacket though. :)

Alex Spencer Crowned the first ever Sky Poker UK Poker Champion

20 year-old Alex Spencer is the UK Poker Champion and £125,000 richer after defeating Danny Blair heads-up.

The Sky Poker UK Poker Championship came to a finale last night as nine of the original field of 621 sat down in their quest to become UK Poker Champion.  Doncaster’s Alex Spencer took home the title and £125,000 winner’s cheque in the culmination of  a spectacular week long poker festival at Dusk Till Dawn in Nottingham that saw prize pools of over £1.1m generated across six events and all guarantees smashed.

Spencer, who is a 20 year-old student, is on something of a tournament heater at the moment. He’d won the Sheffield 25-25 series and final-tabled the DTD Deepstack, as well as making a deep run in the GPS Star City in the previous month. The win at the UK Poker Championship is his biggest accolade to round off the poker purple patch.

Allan Graham, who qualified via Sky Poker for £2.80, will be delighted with his 8th place finish for £12,500, while Deborah O’Connell turned her £1 online satellite win on DTD Online into a 7th place final table spot and £16,000.

I don't have them to hand right now, but I believe Episode 1 will air on March 18th, after Monday Night Football I imagine.

I'll let you know the exact date, time, & channel, nearer the time.

Currently, the footage is in Edit, & I believe Show # 1 is almost complete, & so the Commentary will get laid on next.

Episodes 1 - 4 may not be exactly to your taste if you are looking for serious poker, it's aimed at a wider audience. Episodes 5 & 6 will be exclusively from the Final Table, hole-card technology, the lot.

I think you'll be delighted about the identity of one of the Commentators, who is making his TV commentating debut, but is a VERY accomplished player.  Bit of a gamble, it'll either be sheer genius (great decision by Sky Poker) or a total disaster (my fault), but I'm pretty sure you'll approve.

I've had several people, including the Hon Chinese Frankie, enquire what time "2500" & "2600" (in the above tx schedule) are.

Apologies for not explaining/decoding that.

Internally, at Sky TV, they have what amounts to a 28 hour clock, simply to draw distinction between different days, as a lot of Shows "run over" Midnight. It tends to get very confusing when that happens.

2500 = 1am.

2600 = 2am

There is no such time as 0100 or 0200 in the way Programmnes are scheduled. All very odd, I agree, but that's just how it is. 

Never enough hours in the day.

Enjoyed it. Thought the commentary was funny/different. You can tell Sam was a bit inexperienced imo but I thought he and Richard were a good team and worked well. Actually had a couple of lol moments at a couple of comments from Sam.

This made me chuckle. Jeff Kimber in a pot with Albert Sapiano and Grafton comments

"I don't know who Jeff faced off against for the World Heads Up Championship, but I doubt it was someone as fearsome as Albert Sapiano"

Pretty enjoyable show ,some funny moments , not to sure on the point of  trip to the Newark airshow segment, that  being my only moan tbh

Each episode has something similar at various Nottinghamshire venues, but it is only a minute or 90 seconds per episode, so you can always go have a wee, or make a cuppa.

I thought Sam's commentary was pitched just right for the target audience. The gamble paid off - he'd not done anything similar before, but he's bright & articulate, & radiates enthusiasm. Potent mix, that.

Just been confirmed that each episode (there are 6) will be uploaded to You Tube one week after it airs on Sky Sports. (Sky Sports, obviously, have first dibs).

So the 1st Episode which aired on Sky Sports this Monday (28h April) will go on You Tube next Monday, May 5th, & so on.

Once the series has finished it's 6 episode run on Sky Sports, it will then commence airing weekly on Challenge TV.

Ahhh that's good it won't clash with my takeshi's castle series link already on challenge then!

Wasn't keen on the air base segment. If somebody is channel flicking and happens to drop on the show during that segment, after a few seconds or so you will have lost that viewer as they are on sky sports and obviously want to see something sport related not a history lesson or a geography lesson.

Potentially that person who's channel flicking is lost forever as he finds something else when he turns over and never returns back to the poker show. Just my opinion.

Or they get lost by the poker which is zzzzzzz and get mesmerised by the awesome air base segment!

Well that's not good, then, no idea what happened there. I was not watching it (it clashed with a fabulous documentary about the construction of the Panama Canal on PBS America - highly recommended)  so was not aware it was not on.

Just had a look on the Menu, the repeat (?) is still scheduled for 1am.

It never recorded because of the tennis and there's no repeat?

The "missing" Episode 2 saga.

Firdst up, I can now confirm that the orginal showing of Episode 2 on Monday had to be pulled, as the Tennis over-ran, partly due to the tributes to Elena Baltasha. The "repeat" did air at 1am though.

Effort have been made this week to re-schedule Ep 2, but it is a very busy week on Sky Sports, & they have not been able to find a slot suitable to all parties.

Howevva......

It HAS now gone up on something called "ON DEMAND", & it will remain there until next Friday. The programme will be positioned on Page 3 of the "Most Popular" section, as ON DEMAND does not have a Poker category as such.

Please don't ask me what ON DEMAND is, or how to find it, access it, or work it, as I have no idea. Sounds good though.....

Very good show.  Watched it last night.  Thought Grafton's comm was very good.  The comm's def went for the EPT hartigan/stapleton comedy style and i think it worked really well.

Yes, as an observor, it looked a bit of a strange fold.

What was your take on the hand in the Final between Alex Spencer (K-K) &, I think, Rimmer with 7-7, on an A high flop?

It made me realise how out of touch I am with NLH.

The Aces hand was so frustrating to watch, but at the same time summed up why poker is so interesting - people aren't robots and under intense pressure will make bad decisions, which creates debate and entertainment for the viewer.

Fwiw, in my live poker experiences, when players open jam live in those spots as played (taking into account Rimmer is a rec player) it's because they're scared to see another card, restricting their range to pure bluffs, semi bluffs with draws/weak pairs, or commonly over pairs when there's a flush draw out there, which made the Aces fold all the more baffling.

Given the money jumps I can only assume he didn't want to put himself at risk of not getting a top 3+ cash (think there was five or so left at that point?). Irrational logic I know, but if he's playing above his means I can imagine caution got the better of him.

Agree with every word of that. It's so easy when we are on the Rail, & can see the hole cards.

Just catching up with this and would like to echo the comments about the Rimmer interview, great stuff, loved it.
