Title: Cheltenham - Mere Tipster Competition?
Post by: tikay on February 27, 2014, 12:27:29 PM

Mere Novice replied via e-Mail this morning to my question as to whether he should run a Cheltenham Tipster Competition.

I first needed to know if he would do it for us, as he usually does for Cheltenham, Royal Ascot, etc.  However, we have Stakes & Ladders available to us this year, & blonde wants to support them where possible.

Mere is quite happy to do it again, but does not want to tread on the toes of Stakes & Ladders.

His only caveat is that it needs a minumum of TEN Entrants, or is not worth doing.

So, who fancies a Mere Tipster Comp for Cheltenham?

And if yes, how much Entry Fee? £10, £20, more, less?

If there is enough interest, Mere will Post details a week before Cheltenham, which will be next Tuesday.

Feedback, please.

I'm in, and isn't it usually £20/£25?

This is completely different to stakes&ladders as well as being something of a blonde institution, as are merenovices unparalleled spreadsheet skillz.

For reference, when Mere ran this last year, Simon Galloway was plum last, never tipped a single winner, just ahead of the Full Eso Kral, & redarmi (who had TWO Entries) was not far ahead of either.

I think Doobs was 12th, Karabiner 5th, horsey 4th.

I seem to recall I was the winner.

Yes, £20 or £25 suits most Ralph, & yes, it is a bit of a blonde institution.

To be honest, I'm not entirely sure how Stakes & Ladders works, I'm like marky, I've not dared look yet.

Incidentally, I designed the Spready, Mere just fills in the numbers.

I think Hopkin won last year by forgetting to post any selections on the last day only for mere's random generator to find him a 66/1 shot which obviously bolted up.

Known in the trade as a Galloway.

There looks to be plenty of names so I'll start a thread next week with the details.
Many thanks to everyone who has expressed an interest. The more that enter the more fun we are likely to have.

For anyone who is not sure how the competition works here is the thread for last year's renewal.
http://blondepoker.com/forum/index.php?topic=60495.0

Since this thread has been started if anyone wishes to make suggestions for any alterations to the rules, this is your chance.
Any suggestions will be considered and then, almost certainly, rejected. :)

I'm quite happy to do it for £25, but I'd prefer to do it for a tenner and have twice the runners.

These things are more about getting everyone involved than anything, for me anyway.

I seem to remember that there was a rather harsh-seeming "non-runner you lose" rule in a previous tipster competition but can't recall if it was amended or not.

Great news that you are running another of these Vince, looking forward to the week even more now if that is possible.

I think that was in a competition with a slightly different set of rules. I can't think what it was at the moment but there was, obviously, an extremely good reason for that ruling. :)

For this competition anyone picking a non-runner will get the SP favourite. However, anyone trying to subvert the rules to get the SP favourite in every race will be frowned upon. Obviously there is nothing to stop someone picking the favourite in every race at the time of their entry.
If anyone has entered the competition and is unable to enter any selections for a given day, they will get a random selection in each race based on a simple, unbiased algorithm.

The general feeling appears to be to retain the £25 entry fee used for previous competitions.

A possible alternative which may make it more appealing to people not wishing to venture that much money is as follows:

There will be two pools; one for £10 and one for £15.
You can either enter the £10 pool or both pools. It will not be possible to enter the £15 pool only.
You would only make one set of selections and they would count for both pools if you have entered both.

There will be a separate prize pot for each pool.

I'd like to make the competition available to as many people as possible so I think this may be worth considering. I'd expect that most people would enter both pools anyway so it wouldn't dilute the bigger pot too much.

Any thoughts?

I'll also be happy to provide escrow services for any people wishing to have a side bet.

For what it's worth, I'd like to state that 100% of the stakes are included in the payouts; I take no juice.

I run these competitions just so that I can obtain deep insight into the degenerate habits of Blonde members.

Obviously, I sell that information to various "Intelligence" Agencies and a few "reputable" bookmakers but you really shouldn't worry about that. No personal data is disclosed and I only disclose generic aggregated  information. Your secrets are safe with me.
